A Vermont native, tolerant of wet, well drained soils.  Dark, blue-green aromatic needles. Dark violet cones when young. Good screen.

A Balsam Fir with some characteristics similar to Fraser Fir, and a greater tolerance to drought conditions and heavier soils.

Soft, bluish needles and light colored new growth make this evergreen a good alternative to blue spruce.  Dislikes heavy clay. Withstand dry, sandy soil.

A slender, pyramidal evergreen. Glossy, dark green, fragrant needles with a silver underside.  Colorful purple cones at maturity.

A very hardy, fast-growing stately evergreen. Older branches are pendulous and graceful. Effective as a windbreak or screen.

Very columnar form of Norway Spruce with needles that are a darker green and more attractive than the straight Norway Spruce. At 6' tall, it is only 2' wide.

Graceful, dark green, weeping, dwarf tree wih pendulous branches.  Remains prostrate along ground if not staked.

A Vermont native with a natural tight conical shape.  One of the most tolerant spruces of drought, cold, and wind. Does well in moist soils.

Black Hills Spruce

Exposure: Sun/part shade     Zone:  2    
Will tolerate drought, cold and wind. Densely set light blue-green needles. Shears easily. Tolerates wet soils and light shade.

  Exposure: Sun/part shade.     Zone:  4 
One of the most admired spruces. Slender trunk and graceful drooping branches form a narrow pyramidal head. Needles with silver bands on lower surface give a distinct bi-color effect. Protect from winter wind.

Weeping Serbian Spruce

Very beautiful, slender tree with drooping, twisted branches. Needs to be staked to develop leader. Very ornamental form with bicolor needles.
 
Picea pungens 'Fat Albert'
Fat Albert Colorado Spruce

Semi-dwarf spruce with dense, upright pyramidal form. Good blue needle color. Great choice for smaller sites.

Colorado Blue Spruce

Its attractive color, ranging from silver-green to blue-green, makes a striking contrast in the landscape. Very winter hardy for harsh, windy sites. Easily shaped with shearing. Tolerant of salt.

This compact, narrow pyramidal evergreen has outstanding silver-blue-green twisted needles.  A vigorous grower with high resistance to insects and diseases.

Very adaptable and extremely cold hardy.  Hard to find, uncommon specimen tree with lovely two toned bluish green needles.  Branches feather to the ground.

Austrian Pine

Exposure:  Sun     Zone:  3
Darkest green coloring of all the pines, with heavy, long needles. Excellent tolerance for clay, sand and salt. A very winter hardy pine. Good for screens and windbreaks.

Exposure: Sun     Zone:  3
Rich green to bluish-green, long, soft needles give this tree a graceful and dignified appearance. Picturesque and massive when mature. Makes a beautiful sheared hedge or screen.

Columnar White Pine
Size:  40-60' x 10-15'     Rate:  Fast
Exposure: Sun     Zone:  3
Rapid growing, narrow, columnar tree with slender blue-green needles that give it a delicate, soft-textured appearance.

Weeping White Pine
Size:  10-25' x 15-20'     Rate:  Medium/fast
Exposure : Sun/part shade     Zone:  3  
Graceful, soft-looking evergreen. Twisting, weeping branches of long, blue-green
needles sweep the ground.  Effective contrast when planted with upright evergreen trees.
 
 
Thuja occidentalis
Eastern White Cedar, or Eastern Arborvitae
Size:  6-60' x 10-15'    Rate:  Medium      
Exposure:  Sun     Zone:  2
Native tree excellent for use in screens and hedges. Becomes full with shearing.   
 
 
Tsuga canadensis
Canadian Hemlock
Size:  40-70' x 25-35'     Rate:  Medium
Exposure: Sun or shade     Zone:  3   
Gracefully pyramidal evergreen with slender, horizontal branches and fine textured needles. Excellent as a hedge or specimen. Can withstand heavy pruning or shearing. Not suited for windy sites, or heavy soils without adequate drainage.
