Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Excellent product with one caveat: the bottom is unfinished ceramic which is very abrasive, and I was concerned it might damage our countertops. The problem was eliminated by running a thin film of silicone adhesive along the bottom rim, making a cushioned anti-skid surface that is dishwasher safe.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I used to use used coffee cans to collect for my compost and it was kind of nasty. I cook professionally, using vegetables as the main portions of meals so I generate a bit of compost worthy materials when cooking for a family. There's where I found the only drawback to this item as far as size, second to the handle system. Could be better.

Have been using the lid filter along with bio-degradable bag and I'm happy with how long the system has worked and hasn't become smelly or messy for over a month. Waiting to see how long it can go before it comes to that point; that is, if it isn't totally full before then.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Bought to Replace a unit that got broken. NOw composters are made in China with obvious poor workmanship and cheaper materials, glaze is not as it was on original, wire handle is cheap and flimsy, lid does not fit correctly. If I had known thay had changed suppliers I would not have ordered this again. The original was much superior.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I love this crock mostly because it matches my kitchen perfectly. It conveniently sits on the counter looking like a decoration while waiting for my kitchen scraps. The filter that came with it keeps the smell inside the crock. The compostable bags I ordered are wonderful too. They don't leak and I don't have to clean the crock every time I empty it. The "newness" of composting became a lot easier.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

It looks really nice in our country kitchen & keeps fruit flies from reproducing in it & escaping. However, the handle is a pain to actually dump into our outdoor composter. I'm afraid it will fall right off & it doesn't dump with the handle, it's really only for carrying & then gets in the way when you dump the scraps. [...]but it just looked so much better than any others that we've seen that we bought it. Overall, really we like it, it could just use some design improvements.

I've only had the crock for a couple of weeks, but love it so far! It holds at least a week's worth of kitchen 'stuff' and no odor has escaped, even with very smelly contents (I could Really Smell it when I opened the crock to add more)! Hopefully there will be no problems with the handle breaking off as I have read others have had. I have the charcoal filter in the lid.

Rinsed out very easily after emptying onto the compost pile in the yard.

This crock is attractive and functional. It looks great on my countertop and makes collecting scraps for composting easy and odor free with the charcoal filter in the lid. Don't pack scraps in tightly though because the shape will make the bag hard to remove. I do have to be careful not to drop the lid on the granite countertop but it's much better than the metal can I had before.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I am new to gardening and composting so the idea of keeping food scraps for compost in my kitchen was an offensive idea to me. However, I must say, that keeping the scraps in this attractive crock next to my kitchen sink has eased the unpleasantness. At the end of the day I empty the crocks contents to the outside compost area, wash the crock and start on the next days scraps--no unpleasantness or odors.

I've been adding to my compost jar daily as I prepare meals. The other day it was time to dump it into my large compost bin. I had been surprised by the "lack of smell" as the contents had not been stinking up my kitchen. When I got to the bottom of the crock WHEW! There was that smell! So the smell was there but this crock keeps it contained. LOVE THAT! Not to mention I'm not making 100 trips out to the large bin anymore. Once a week is fine with me. :-) I highly recommend this compost crock. Oh, and did I mention it's pretty too? LOL

The handle of this crock can fall off, leaving you with a broken crock. Therefore, I recommend that you take the handle off and leave it off. I'm buying another, but this time I'm leaving the handle off.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

This crock is probably heavier than one of the metal bucket styles, but if that is not a problem, it definitely looks better sitting out. The crock doesn't look like the one pictured that has the lovely graduated color change in the green glaze. It looks like the one shown in "other" views, with a thinner solid stripe of dark green. It has a more "mass marketed" look. But it still is a big improvement over yogurt containers. I like that there is no rubber gasket on the lid because you are able to use just one hand to lift the lid. It holds several days worth of scraps and holds the odor in just fine.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I've owned this crock for several years and it still sits on the counter...but we use other containers to collect the compost. It is an attractive crock but I agree with another customer that the shape does not work well with bio bags. The neck of the crock is much narrower than the body and it just makes it difficult to get the bag out when it is full. Also, the handle does not stay put. I do not carry the crock by the handle for fear that the handle will come off and the crock will break (this happened to the same style crock I had at work)

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Best thing about this crock is no odor. The charcoal filter really works!
You do have to empty it weekly to prevent lots of slime from forming under the scraps, since this can leak out of the compostable bags, and possibly could cause the bag to break. The glazed interior means this crock is very easy to clean, and the construction is solid. Good value, and looks fine on the countertop.

    Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Love the looks of it, very attractive unless there's a bio bag inside. Then the top edge of the bag has to hang over the top edge of the crock, unless the bag is entirely left inside. TThe bio bags are great though they don't seem to break down in my compost pile. The bio bags are hard to remove from the crock when there are bulky rinds like citrus inside. Struggling to pull the bag out sometimes results in holes if there is a sharp edge like a stem inside that pokes through. Also the filter does not stop odors like onions or mildew. If not used for a few days mildew can build up and collect on the filter. Crock doesn't seal well. It is easy to clean, but I don't like messing with the filter when mildew builds up on it. I would not recommend this to anyone else without telling them the problems with it.

This looks great on my counter, but I have had to adapt a plastic container to fit inside which is what we use to take scraps outside. We live on a farm, and there are too many ways the original container could break on our trips to the chicken coop while doing chores! It would be absolutely perfect if you provided a removable, non-breakable insert...

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

Yes, this is an attractive crock, but I have had trouble with the lid and the little spot where the handle fits into- breaking. They do not offer the lid seperately (for when it break- and it will, just wait and see). I have used so much super-glue repairing this and that over and over again. I always hand washed it, never exposed it to the heat of the dishwasher dryer. The crock just is prone to breaking.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I love this crock and find it very attractive on my kitchen counter. It is great to not have to run out to the composter every day. The odor absorber works great (and even washes out for reuse). I just wish it was tiny bit bigger. I don't suggest actually carrying it by the handle either, support it from the bottom.

This is a nice little composter. We've forgot to get one years ago and I'm embarrassed to say that we always had a bag of kitchen scraps on our counter waiting to go to the big tumbler outside.
Now we have a nice little crock sitting on the counter where it all goes.

I think this item is pretty sturdy as well. I was hesitant about the metal handle but it's heavy duty.

Only thing I would add is that the rim of the lid should have a rubber seal. I'm always fearful that I'm going to crack it when placing it on the pot. Also, it is odor free until you lift the lid, depending on what is in it. I think this is much more attractive than the stainless steel or the plastic type.

Would like more filters with initial order or less expensive replacements is my only negative.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

This is an attractive, counter-top ready compost bin for the kitchen. It is not huge, and needs to be emptied regularly, which can be a good thing as it also does not get too stinky before needing to be emptied. Not sure it would be good for a large family, however. The charcoal disks in the top do a great job of eliminating odors and keeping bugs away. I bought 6 when I bought the Crock, and the first one has lasted at least a month with no sign of stench. I think they last longer than advertised!

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I love the look and functionaliy of my compost crock. It is very attractive; however, I don't like that the opening is smaller than the body, so when the bag is full it is difficult to pull out. In light of that, I wish I had bought one that didn't get smaller at the top. I LOVE the bags that decompose. They work great and make taking stuff up to the composter easier.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I have been looking at this crock for compost in the catalog for the last two years and couldn't decide whether it would be big enough. I got tired of my family leaving vegetable and fruit compost materials in containers on my counter and having containers stained with coffee grounds. I only have to empty it on my compost pile every other day or so. We are big veg. and fruit eaters so I am pleasantly surprised at the capacity. No odor either with the charcoal filter in the top. This would be a great gift item for someone on your list. And the best part, my kitchen has olive tile and counters. It matches perfect!

Placed on counter for kitchen waste/scraps. However, due to container shape, the biodegradable bags can be a little to remove, depending on amount in bag. Think other style that is not larger at bottom than top would make bag removal not as hazardous (chance of bag tearing. But really love looks of container on counter.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

So many reviews of other products had me worried about all the potential problems. I chose this crock because its design and colors were different from the others, but once I started using it, I knew I made the right choice.

First worry: smell. I never have a problem with smell. A big family and hot climate mean it doesn't sit long enough to get smelly, but just in case, the crock comes equipped with a charcoal filter in the lid which I will probably never replace.

Will it be hard to clean? Nope. The inside is finished smooth so it's very easy to empty and clean.

Will the handle be so flimsy that I drop it the first week? The handle is very sturdy so I'm not afraid of carrying it out to the compost bin. I even add some water before I head out to help empty it and add a little moisture to my compost. The extra weight is no problem at all.

Will it look like a garbage can on my counter? Again, no chance. The style and colors look great in my kitchen. It's pretty enough to leave sitting on the counter.

I wasn't sure if I would like a crock, but now that I've been using it for a couple of months, I'll never be without it again.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

The crock looks just like the photo and blends in nicely on our counter without screaming "compost!" The first charcoal filter I used (fits under the lid) got wet and moldy, so I am using none right now and there is no smell. don't know if the filters always get moldy or if it was just my cleaning the top and wetting it. I have loosely drapped a bit of plastic wrap over the top (which now has tiny open holes) to keep away fruit flies just in case. I will reinsert another filter; they are not especially expensive, I'm just testing without them until the weather gets very hot.

This looks great on the counter, and it holds tons of kitchen scraps. It cleans beautifully either by hand or in the dishwasher (after taking out the charcoal filter). I highly recommend it to anyone who does composting.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I really like the appearance of this compost crock. It's nice enough to have out on the counter, and if you diligently empty it, it doesn't stink up the place.
The one awkward part of the design for me is that it's barrel-shaped. So, if you want to use a liner for ease of cleaning, like we do, it makes it hard to empty by pulling out the liner because it's bigger in the middle than at the opening. We gave up on using a liner, and because the item is glazed ceramic on the inside, it's not hard to clean.
I have not had the problem with the handle yet that other people have mentioned.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I ignored other reviews and purchased this crock. It is attractive on the counter. However, it is shaped in such a way as to make it impossible to pull a full compost bag out. In order to pull the bag out, you must rely on the metal handle, which slips off the crock. It broke in the first month. What a waste of money.

We use this to hold kitchen scraps until we take them out to the composter. The biodegradable bags are a BIT LARGE FOR THE CROCK AND IF THE CROCK IS FULL, THEY DO NOT FALL OUT into the compost when you upend the crock to dump its contents into the bin; you have to manually remove the bag & contents. The crock works much better without the bags. Then it empites easily. It also is nice to look at on the counter and NEVER smells.

We love our compost crock. It is an attractive addition to our kitchen. We chose it over the stainless steel product, because it looks more attractive on our kitchen counter. Now that we are retired we have started our own large garden. Instead of throwing away our kitchen scraps, coffee grounds and tea bags, we now have an odor free container to put them into until we transfer them into our home made compost tumbler, constructed from a 55 gal. plastic drum. It just doesn't seem right to throw our food waste into a smelly old garbage can anymore, when we can recycle them into the earth where it all started.

Must empty every other day or will start to get gnats, and poor odor. The filter helps some, but when you open to add more scraps, the smell quickly permeates the air. I've just begun composting, and looked at several kitchen storage solutions for the scraps and grounds to be collected and dumped into the composter. This is not only attractive, but the charcoal filters work very well at keeping odors away. I wish I could afford to purchase these for all my friends. This is an attractive composting pot that can be left at counter top for those of us who use it constantly! I've seen other pots, most of which are good for undercounter use. I can't be bothered with that, it's one extra step. This is convenient and far nicer looking than the usual tupperware container that I used previously.

I keep this by the kitchen sink and use it daily -- every time I cook there is something to go into it. It holds a lot and doesn't need to be emptied daily since the filters really do keep it from getting smelly, and let's be honest sometimes you just don't want to trek out to the compost bin -- especially when it's raining. I'm very happy with this item.

Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

I really like this crock! It looks nice on my kitchen counter and it holds quite a bit. The charcoal filters really keep odors at bay. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because the unglazed bottom of the base scratches countertops. And, as others have reviewed, the handle is really only for looks and not for actual use. I would definitely recommend this to a friend!

This thing is beautiful! I have it sitting on my kitchen counter instead of in the garage where we kept the old, ugly plastic one; and my husband and I both compost everything we can now. There is NO ODOR with the great filter in the lid and the biobags that fit inside keep me from having to scrape gunk out of the crock all the time. I really love this product!

We enjoyed having this attractive crock on our kitchen counter for the collection of scraps for composting. However, on a number of occasions the metal handle easily came loose from the crock. Comments about Green Stoneware Compost Crock:

This is an attractive counter top container for garden compost scraps. The odor control in the top works well, and everything about it is ideal. Sometimes the handle is a small hassle, but not a big deal, and the non-conical shape means you need to shake it sometimes to empty. All in all, a much more attractive and very good solution to alternative containters.

This compost pail replaced a plastic, lidded container and sits on our kitchen counter to collect kitchen scraps destined for the outdoor compost bin.
