You won't find a better-designed compost aerator anywhere. It has not one, but two sets of "wings" that fold back to plunge deep into the pile, then open to create new air passages. A must-have accessory for any composter.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I'm disabled so I was looking for some easier way to aerate my composter. Unfortunately it is still too difficult to push it through to get to the bottom of the bin. As things decompose, it becomes even more difficult to use. Sounds and looks good but I wouldn't recommend it.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I have an open top composter and it worked easily to mix the top to bottom.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I have had an Earth Machine sitting in the corner of the yard with zero production. I tried to make my own compost turner without much luck. In the month I been using this I have seen the compost pile converting into the black gold that we are all striving for.
The top pair of fins does not always open, but I have found that after it is inserted into the pile, a 90 degree twisting motion on the upstroke is very effective.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
The device works well in general but sometimes isn't 'sharp' enough to penetrate dense matted leaves inside the compost pile. The wings could be a little longer so that they disrupt more of the pile with each thrust and extraction. Overall, it works as advertised, but it could do a better job with a little tweaking.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
In Pittsburgh our compost bin in just beginning to thaw...we can't wait to use the aerator! It will be so useful and easier to stir and make compost. As soon as we start using it, I'll be happy to let you know if your product is as easy to use as we are expecting it to be.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I love this product and I don't know why I waited so long to buy it. It breaks up the compost with ease and turns everything over to get it breaking down faster. I'm look forward to every week turing over all the new scraps to get a good load of beautiful compost
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Light weight love that feature. But if you have a large composter it is harder then expected to use. However with elbow grease you can as I have gotten great use of this light weight useful tool.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I am very happy with this product. It has been easy to use and is very sturdy.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I have just started my first batch of compost and really like the aerator for "stirring" the pot. The prongs sometimes don't open up when they get a lot of the compost stuck in them. It is easily remedied by just knocking off the dirt.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I thought this would solve my problem of being able to mix my compost pile easily. It did not work like I thought it would and I am dissapointed in the product. I did better with my pitch fork.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Very usefull to accelerate composting process.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Until I had this tool, I did not take the time to properly turn the compost. It just sat and rotted slowly. Now it is fun to do with this tool, and it does a great job. I have bought several of these as gifts.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
So much easier than using a hoe or pitchfork to turn the compost. A good facilitator!

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I use this on my leaf/grass mixture in a bin about 3 1/2 feet in height. I plunge it down, give it a 1/4 turn and pull up, in 3-4 places in the pile, every month or so. If the compost is heavy, or compacted, you really have to jam it in. It resembles a guy on a jackhammer. While doing this, you really have to put your whole body into it, so it gives a bit of a workout, too. But, once I pull it out, I can hear the air sucking in to the bottom of the pile. There is nothing else I'm aware of that can easily aerate deep into the pile, short of turning it all over with a pitchfork. It's actually a pretty clever invention. One drawback it that the lower handle is held on by a socket head bolt (aka Allen head bolt) which comes loose and has to be tightened frequently. Maybe some Loctite would help....

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Simply a worthless tool. Just takes up space. Complete waste of money.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Does the job as advertised.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
the "wings" don't always open up, but my compost bin is pretty heavy. But it's better than any other tool I have
Comments about Compost Aerator:
This works as stated however it does not work well with the Bio bags as they wrap around it and then you have to unwind them...not pleasant. Overall I have been pleased with this product. My husband uses it to grind up the leaves into smaller pieces for faster decomposition.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
The compost areator is nice to have to stir all of the composting material we have accummulated. I was trying to mix it all up with a shovel and have found using the areator makes it much easier and does a better job.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
great for composting
Comments about Compost Aerator:
No more trying to aerate with the pitchfork. My new aerator is great. I just push the tool into the compost two or three times and I'm done for the week!
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I question whether the wings are made durable enough. Time will tell. For now I am satisfied and would recommend the product.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
This product requires strength for optimal use. It does the job, but requires a good bit of exertion (at least in my compost). Then there is the problem of where to store it which, in my instance, is not convenient to the composter. On the positive side, this is the second one we've purchased. The first one died of old age after many years of service. Despite its faults, I haven't seen anything better on the market.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Works just fine. I use it about once a week in my composter.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
This aerator is easy to use, durable and very effective. I was surprised at the durable and efficient design, it is now one of my favorite gardening tools.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Great for poking holes but does not seem to do what it claims. I will go back to my stick - that works!
Comments about Compost Aerator:
We've only had this tool for about a month, and it's worked for us so far. The only problem is that we have had difficulty getting the old and new stuff mixed together, but that's probably our fault because we did not turn the mixture for a long time. Have not had any trouble with the handle as others mentioned.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Once driven to the bottom, it mixes the compost well. One has to be strong and tall in order to turn and push it down. Our community garden consists of short women and children! ;-))..
Comments about Compost Aerator:
The tool worked well for about the first 5 twists, but then the side handle broke off the first time I used it. They need to design it with a bolt running all the way through the side handle rather than a stamped, threaded inlay.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Heavy duty, easy to use, penetrates even tough compost and pulls up the bottom layer. This tool is required for all non-rotating or self-mixing composters.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
It's a great tool to have. I have no complaints.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
As other users have mentioned the weak point on this tool is it's handle. The weld broke for me during my 4th use. Also didn't find the ergonomics to be great when aerating a large bin of leaves.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I thought this was a great addition to my gardening shed - I really like that it is streamlined and easy to push down into the compost but then the metal "wings" flap out and pull the compost up when I pull up. Very easy tool for a small (and not too strong) woman to use!
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Brilliant in theory, but doesn't last long. Mine fell apart quickly, the handle is loose & I am very disappointed with it. I think the main problem is the poor quality of the screws used.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This is a sturdy tool that works OK in an enclosed composter that doesn't have much turning room. It would have worked better for me if I hadn't waited until the bin became a bit too filled. (My fault) Also I put in some twigs that were too long and they impeded the turning process. I then found an old, long-handled pointed hoe in the recesses of my shed and it works fairly well turning the material accumulated on the bottom of the bin.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
This tool does just what I wanted it to. It easily turns and aerates the compost material.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
My compost bin makes turning with shovel awkward so this handy tool solved my problem.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Intended to use this on a large, fenced compost pile of yard waste material. The wings are too wide to push through new material. Will probably work best when pile is mostly broken down.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
This is not the strongest tool ever made, but it does the job, and I've had no trouble with it.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Didn't come with any instructions so not sure how to use it
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I think it is great; I have nothing to compare it to except a pitchfork, but this is better/easier anyday! I love the 2 "wings" that fold upon insertion then open when it is removed...this really moves through all the material quite well. The rubber grip handles are key to use, lets you get a really sturdy grip to shove that thing down into the compost.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Just like everyone else, mine broke the first time I used it. The side handle snaps off, bad weld job or something like that. Compost needs a lot of moisture for it to work too, just like everyone else said. Stay away, get something else.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
It broke the first time I used it. Seems to be made of a very soft metal.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
handle broke off within one week, the metal just snapped. The prongs do not open out into the compost, they stick, really a waste of money. I find a hand fork or pitch fork far better and easier.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
The grips make it easy to use.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
very useful tool
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Much easier (on my back!) to use than the pitch fork I'd been using. Very light weight tool, but very efficient. Great aeration - speeds up the composting! Wings will occasionally need some lubrication to operate smoothly.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I'll be storing this model inside, to prevent wear and tear from the weather. My original one 'wing' model 'wing' finally broke off after many years of yeoman service. I hope the newer two 'wing' model does just as well!
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I ordered the aerator last May 2009 and used it through the summer. Unfortunately the material in the composter must be very wet in order for it to work. I was only able to use it once this spring before the handle broke off! The metal actually snapped. Very poor quality
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Product worked just fine. Turns over material in the bin without much effort.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
This tool works well. I used it in a 3' tall composter that hadn't been turned in over a year. The pile needed some work, but after the initial loosening up, the aerator is getting to the bottom and turning the pile easily.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I was worried this was going to be a waste of money -- after all, I had a pitchfork to mix my compost. But in a stacking compost system, there isn't much room to get leverage and to get deep in the pile. This tool makes the job easy and quick with no mess.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I really had a hard time turning my compost pile, but this aerator made it much easier.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Works great except the side handle broke off almost immediately.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
This device works just as it should. What I needed to turn my bins. Some have reported that the top fins don't unfold, but I've not had any problems such as this. Great tool!
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Works so-so. Folding blades get jammed with compost easily and then do not pivot inside pile. Use a pitch fork for better results.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This is the first aerator that I've purchased that really does the job of mixing it up in the compost bin. I've used a pitchfork, and have purchased other aerators that lasted only a few months. This aerator is very well constructed and the double set of wings really does the job!
Comments about Compost Aerator:
My composter fills from the top, but sits and turns on its side, so this product is very helpful in mixing the compost and accelerating the breakdown.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I have alot of compost and this works great along with my tumbler.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Sure beats the ole shovel and rake I was using.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Works well to aerate, but you need to get some muscle behind it to get the tool in and out of your compost pile, especially if you have larger pieces of biomass in your compost.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
works great!
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Used in small backyard composter, worked OK for a couple of turnovers, but lower handle broke off after that. Poorly designed. Handle was attached by two small spot welds which failed with light use. Junk, would be embarrassed to sell at garage sale.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
After reading other reviews I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. I have been composting for about a year and had not aerated or mixed my compost; there never seemed to be a good way to accomplish the task. Using the aerator was simple and I was able to get the task done.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This Garden Aerator seems tough enough at first. The only assembly is attaching the lower handle. The rest of the handle is one piece. But that lower handle is its Achilles Heal. I've only owned it since January and used it a half dozed times and the lower handle is bent and ready to break off. The weld that attaches the handle cylinder to the bolt (that attaches to main handle) is the trouble spot. Obviously a wimpy weld that broke quickly. I'll include a photo of the lower handle detached from the main to show how badly bent it is. Very disappointing. Especially since the manufacturer's (Bosmere of North Carolina) logo is "where quality counts".

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend. He had been using a shovel for turning the compost without complaint. This looked like a fun gadget and my expectations were low but it's not very expensive so I decided to go for it. Well we were pleasantly surprised. It works great! This tool makes aerating the compost fast and easy. It requires little strength to use and easily turned a combination of kitchen and yard waste. I plan to buy another one to give to my father.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
An excellent tool for turning small compost bins. Sharp point penetrates deep into compost. the double "wings" pull up the bottom compost to the top. I would suggest a little WD40 spray on the wing nuts to keep them lubercated so that the will easily open. Also keep it clean.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Not easy to operate and bulky

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I use my compost aerator to mix the compost in my bin; specifically to bring up the stuff from the bottom of the bin to the top. I like the aerator but the top set of paddles stick in the closed position so only the bottom paddles open to bring up the compost. It would do a better job if the top paddles opened like they're supposed to.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Was using a pitch fork to aerate the compost piles but didn't know how easy it could be until I started using the compost aerator. It was recommended to me by one of the telephone assistants when I was ordering other supplies. It is a wonderful tool.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This aerator works well in our compost bin, mixing things from the bottom. The only problem is that we use the biodegradable compost container liners and they get tangled on the aerator, making it necessary to pull the nasty liner off by hand.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I like using the compost aerator: it's so easy compared to turning the pile. Often the upper wings do not open and must be manipulated by hand. Its ease of use make me aerate more often compared to the laborious and unpleasant turning with a fork. I'd recommend it to composters.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I will use this because it is the best that is out there. I really like the jagged four part tip. I only wish it was a longer pole that would go further down into my compost pile. As it is, it only penetrates the third top of the pile. I still have to use a pitch fork to go deep.
I also do not like the handle. A part of it spins as I use it, to the point of coming apart.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
allows easy aeration of the pile.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
The top wings are a little sticky, but this helps you turn the compost without having to use too much muscle. I definitely find using the aerator easier and quicker than using a pitchfork or other garden tool.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
My bigest diappoinment that the "wings" are closing up once I stick the aerotor in my compost. I hope I assembled it right. If anyone has the same problem, please let me know how to fix it. Thank you.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I just ordered this one as a gift for my brother. I have had one for a year myself and really like it. It is a no brainer for me, which is important. You put the scraps in the top and the fertilizer comes out of the bottown.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
The theory is good, it just doesn't work like the manufacturer says.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
It almost works by itself. I know I needed something to aerate my compost pile but was afraid I could not use it. My left shoulder dislocates very easily, but since this product allows you to use one or both arms to aerate your composte, I have had no problems whatsoever with my shoulder.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This aerator is sturdy and the wings drop down very well. It looks like it will stay functional for several years, time will tell. It does take some strength and a height over 5'6" to do a good job getting the tool fully submerged into the compost in my stationary top-loading composter. So, aerating has become my husband's job! At the same time that I purchased the aerator, I also purchased the newly available GSC-exclusive Compost Tumbler. The tumbler does it's own aerating! Very happy with this new addition, but I do need to keep the top-loading composter functioning as well, because our city's solid waste company has set new stringent standards as to how much trash may be picked up each week, so we MUST compost. The aerator is definitely worth the price.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
lower handle snapped off the first time we used it. Seemed to get tangled up a lot. A pitch fork would have been much easier to use.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
unless you are really strong (i am woman with carpel tunnel issues in wrists) not effective. Not able to dig in deep enough to pull out.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I like that the tool has a sharp spake on the end and that the first prongs open well. The top prong remains close at time. The tool still does the job though. The handle was easy to assemble. I'm happy with it.
[1 of 1 customers found this review helpful]
Comments about Compost Aerator:
This product is comfortable and designed well. I did not give it 5 stars because the tip that gets pushed through the compost does not cut through the compacted compost easy enough. Also the lower set of wings get stuck in the upright position requiring you to pull out of the compost sharply to make both sets of wings expand and properly aerate.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Looked in feed stores, garden stores, nurseries, etc around our area (NY); could not find an aerator. This twin bladed unit works better than one I had years ago in California, it is easy to use with the double handle and quite durable.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Using this tool is fast and easy. It's no longer a chore to mix the pile. It's really helped the pile compost faster so we can get to the good stuff.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
All in all, worth getting! Hard to reach bottom and does not do well if you have too many grass clippings, but for the price, it is durable and gets the job done fast and efficiently.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
When I ordered this, I couldn't quite visualize how it worked, but I decided to try it on the basis of the positive reviews. I'm so glad I did -- this is far less labor-intensive than the pitchfork method I had been using. It's slim and stores neatly behind my bin, as well. Sometimes the best tools are the simplest! This is no exception... I was able to aerate my compost pile today without breaking a sweat like I usually do.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I aerate my compost bins once a week by inserting this tool into the center, then working around the edges. The double wings make this job easy and efficient. This keeps my compost loose and working well.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
As with all the products shipped to me from GS, there were no directions for assembly, thus rendering the tool useless.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I love that my compost does not smell. I have bunnies and other small animals going through my yard and none of them stop for a snack. My neighbors do not even know I have a compost heap in my yard.
The aereator is the best tool I have found. it saves my back and reaches waaaay down to the bottom where lots of drier waste is stored.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I read the blogs before buying and followed some advice like adding the washer to the handle nut and WD-40 to the "wings". It works perfectly! I love the curved handle so I can lean my weight into it to shove it down thru the compost.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I am new to creating my own compost.
I purchased this tool, as it seems to be a logical accessory for the compost production.
Very easy to use.
I love the padded handles. Both where they are located, as well as the comfort when pushing the tool down through the compost.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
The turning over of the compost is very easy with this tool, since I have had both thumb joints removed it is very difficult to turn my compost with a pitchfork and this tool is absolutely the best solutions out there!
The assembly was very easy and it went together with not difficulties. I Love IT!

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This tool is a great idea, but I'm not at all happy with it. The top "wings" do not open when it is used in the compost pile or bin. They need to open to aerate the pile. I may decide to contact Gardener's supply and return the tool. It is not worth it's money. First product Ik've felt was useless that I ordered from Gardener's Supply.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This tool seems to do just what it claimed it would. I poke it down into my compost and twist it about and as I pull up the little wings fan out to help get the stuff mixed. The padded handle helps me grip the tool and makes the process more comfortable. The tool feels as if it will hold up for a while. I made the mistake of throwing ivy in the composter and the long vines got hung up in it so I won't do that again. But I am happy with this product.[...]

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I could use a class on turning the compost. At my size and age I should have ordered a barrel style that I could turn but was trying to save some money. this aerator seems to be trying. I think I still need some more muscle. Guess I have to make new friends.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I find it difficult to use. The wings don't work very well. I use the handle to keep the lid of my composter closed. I had to buy a pitchfork to turn the compost. I wouldn't recommend buying it.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
The aerator easily goes through even dense compost piles. The wings get clogged with debris after a few pokes but clean easily.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Was skeptical after reading some reviews, but this tool is great. Just twist if tool doesn't plunge easily down into pile. Tip is pointed enough, and wings will open freely if you tweak it a little with flathead screwdriver and pliers. It helps to shred leaves first, but grass and leaves are no problem for this tool. Compost bin is steaming and hot every time I aerate it. This tool is great design and works as advertised. We're using "earth machine" compost bin.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
It is OK. It works sometimes. The bottom wings do not open. I went back to my pitch fork and hoe. I will keep it handy as a backup or if I feel like experimenting.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
It does not do well with a compost pile which has not been "maintained" as the grass clippings and leaves do form impenetrable layers. If you take care of the pile on a regular basis, as you should, this product will do the job as advertised. It is solidly build and appear to be able to withstand the abuse of outdoor elements.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
It woerks much better for tunring over the compost in my composter than my old garden fork did. With this tool, I can reach the bottom of the pile and pull it to the top> I nvere used to be able to reach down low enough before. It does require cleaning with a hose afterward (some of the compost catches and stays in the hinged 'flippers' but it's well worth it.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
It works great for most of the pile. It doesn't lift the bottom 1/4 because the moveable lifters don't open until the tool is raised a bit.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I put off buying this for over a year thinking that I was doing just fine with a pitchfork. This year, after moving and getting a bigger compost bin, I decided to give it a shot. It's worth every penny.
I was surprised how easily the aerator penetrated to the bottom of the compost bin and how well it did on mixing. In just a few jabs, I can mix my entire bin. Plus, since this tool goes in straight, I don't spear the sides of the compost bin like I did with a pitchfork.
I think we're going to get one for my wife's parents who are in their sixties and just getting into composting. This will save their backs!

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Sounds like a great tool but it doesn't work as well as I thought it would. Hard to push into the compost and the "wings" get stuck in the closed position.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
It is easy to use.Better than a pitchfork or shovel. Makes shifting material easy and effective

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I bought this last year, and I also prefer my old pitchfork. I like the two handles; it provides better thrust into the pile. However, it STILL doesn't penetrate far. The end needs to be tapered to a point. I also think that where the wings attach needs to fold flush with the pole. Wings don't open properly as is. Very frustrating.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Fully assembled upon arrival. Used immediately and worked great. Much better than my old aerator.

Keep the wings well lubricated.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
I'm new to composting and a friend let me borrow her aerator and I really liked it, so bought one of my own. The price was very reasonable and I truly think I got a great product. I've used it a few times and so far it's doing great things to my wee little compost pile. Thanks for making/selling such a great product!

Comments about Compost Aerator:
The wings on the aerator do not expand as they should to provide thorough turning of the compost. They have such a fine tolerance that the compost matter prevents the wings from dropping down. If the wings of the product had a looser tolerance they would work as advertised. In addition, the leading point of the aerator should be longer, narrower, and more pointed to make penetration to the bottom of the compost pile easier.
The double handles make aerator easier to turn but they don't outweigh problematic wing design.

wish I would have bought before the composter was soo full

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I tried this in my composter I use primarily for yard waste so the debris is rather chunky. The aerator would only punch through the top layers of the compost and pulled out without the "wings" opening, thus having no effect at all. A rather expensive tool to throw away. My pitchfork may be somewhat clumsy to use but at least it works.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This was just what I needed to turn the compost in my pyramid composter. It was just too difficult with a fork.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This is the most useful item invented for compost management in ages! It easily aerates and mixes the compost from bottom to top. It is designed to dive to the bottom of the pile with the blades folded in, and when you pull, the blades expand --mixing and aerating the compost. I use it at home with my rotating barrel composter and at our community gardens with commercial bins. You need this if you compost!

Comments about Compost Aerator:
It does what it is suppose to do. Easy to use & comfortable design. Sometimes the tines do not fully open while using it, but it does a decent job at aerating... certainly better than pitch fork!

This is the first time I've used an aerator, and it seems to be working well. I wish it was longer, because I am short (4'11").

It helps if you spray the hinged flaps with WD40 that way it always works easily.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
The upper set of wings did not open and close easily. The tubing above these wings needed to be squeezed slightly in a vise in order for the wings to move freely. Also, a lock washer had to be added to the screw holding the handle to keep it from working loose. After that the item worked very well.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Found it very easy to assemble. In using it, I found you need a little muscle to get it deeply into the composting materials. I don't think I could recommend this to anyone who lacks strength in their arm muscles. Works great if you are strong enough to use it.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Works great.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
A little hard to impale the pile with but will pull up massive amounts of compost. Our heaps our 3+ feet deep and this will penetrate all the way to the bottom and pull up a massive amount of compost to the top. Great! The two handles offset set by 90 degrees are helpful. The flaring wings do a great job of pulling up the heap from the bottom (essential for aeration!). Good job. This unit does not appear close to breaking, yet, either. Thanks.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I purchaed this product to aerate my compost bin. I thought the "wing" feature would make it easier and improve aeration.
It is does not penetrate the pile/compost bin contents easily....an understatement! Even with using brute force it does not go deep into the materials being composted. I tried using it with a wire open compost pile of just grass and shredded twigs etc and could not get any pepetration. Needs a sharp point or something. I am very disappointed with the product. I have gone back to a pitch fork and hoe.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Although I don't use this near as much as I should - I try to convince the kids to do it when they bring materials out to the compost pile - it does a much better job on the confined compost pile than the fork does.
A digging fork - or compost fork - might be ideal for a big, spreading open pile where you can get at material from all angles, but for anything in a confined bin, you need to be able to pierce straight down and then lift up to aerate materials. A fork can do the piercing, it might even do some turning or shifting with great effort, but it's not going to lift and mix layers in a confined space.
This product does take some physical strength. A pile that's sat and settled for too long takes a lot of force to pierce into; the more aerated the pile is kept, the easier this becomes. Lifting a packed wet pile can also require arm strength and, unless you're standing on a raised platform, you're not likely to be able to apply any other leverage. Keeping things mixed correctly as far as brown & green materials and keeping the compost pile properly aerated all along makes the effort much easier.
Certain objects - especially large materials - can get stuck or cause hang-ups and increase the force required to move the aerator. These can be prevented by cutting materials prior to composting - which speeds things up anyway - or dealt with as a fact of lazy composting.
The wings do stick occasionally, generally with packed, wet, or large materials. Smaller pieces and/or more frequent aeration prevents this from happening.
Materials do cling under the wings; this is a natural result of the design needed in order for them to function. Larger materials can be scraped or brushed off with another tool, and the remainder washes off easily.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I followed a suggestion I saw in earlier reviews of using WD-40 on the "wing" rivit point in order to make certain they would open up and have not had any problems with them getting stuck in the closed position.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I used this on compost piles that are layers of leaves and kitchen scraps. In areas where there were leaves that aerator got stuck on the leaves. I had to pull the leaves off the aerator before I could continue. It works great if your piles is already loosely packed - the aerator slides right down to the bottom of the pile.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I've found your aerator tool works well. With the two grip handles, the plunging and removal from the compost makes the use less of a challenge and more of a pleasure. Cleaning of the tool was a little difficult without a garden hose nearby but overall nice design.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
.....just barely. This compost aerator has a somewhat pointed end, so you can work it into your compost pile with a lot of "back and forth" digging. Then, when you go to pull up the compost from the bottom, the wings sometimes stay jammed against the pole so that it doesn't always work. Not much more effective than a simple pitch fork.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
The two reasons I purchased this particular compost aerator are 1. the double off-set handles that angle your grip to increase strength and decrease discomfort 2. the double set of wings that increase efficiecy.
This aeroator was designed intelligently.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This product I am using in my compost bin.
I am a little disappointed in this product.
I am finding that it isn't as effective as I thought it would be.
But.....it does work somewhat. Perhaps as I use it more; I will like it better.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I would recommend to a new and timid gardener but would not buy again for myself. I bought it because a friend and Master Gardener said she liked it. She also has more money and likes spending it better than I do. Probably not better than a broom handle.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This is a good addition to our compost pile, alongside a sturdy small fork. Solidly made, like the double prongs and handles. The only complaint I have is that the "fans" of the blades don't open as easily as I'd like, so I greased them and that helped, but they stick closed if they get into the heavy stuff. But it is good for getting air way down into the bottom.

The padded handles make this easy to use. Great for people with weak wrists or arthritus.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
My compost pile is in an old trash can. Because it is deep a pitchfork just doesn't get to the bottom of the pile to aerate. This item goes all the way down to the bottom and really helps mix everything up.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
It works well, however, if your pieces are not fist size and if you have fresher leaves you will have to remove anything stuck.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I'm using the aerator in a small outdoor compost bin made from a garbage pail. It's not long enough to turn the bottom layers - but it's a great idea - and easier to use than a shovel.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I received a round three piece composter as a present. Tried several "tools" from my garage collection to turn the contents with limited success. This tool is a simple elegant design for the job. My container started working much more efficiently within days.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
First of all, I would describe myself an avid gardner, getting started. I particulary like the ease of use of the aerator; I'm not a strong person and this enables me to be more efficient in the aerating process.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I did not like this product at all. It did NOT aerate the soil - it doesn't work like they say it is supposed to. It barely budged my compost, and could not tell that it brought anything from the bottom to the top.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I was never able to figure out how to use this item. The directions were unreadable, and I was not even sure that it had all the components to use it.
I have been composting for over 7 years, and the best tool I have used has been a mini pitchfork. I was disappointed in this product.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
This product is too hard for me to handle. I can't push it deep enough into my composter to shift debris around. I have found that a pitch fork works better for me.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I like the hinged bits that make it easier to push this tool into the depths of the pile and then open out to lift and turn. The two handles work well for right or left handed persons and feels ergonomically comfortable.
Comments about Compost Aerator:

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I am older and need easy turning of compost. This was a good choice. Getting it to the bottom of the pile seems to work pretty well. The only drawback is the fact that the top wings fold up and get jammed with debri.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Short pole means bending and lifting over a large compost pile. Really turns and grabs well, but sometimes means large clumps are heavy and cumbersome. After aerating the pile which it does well, it's sometimes messy and hard to clean off.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This is my first experience with a compost aerator so I can't compare it to others. But I tend to reach for a shovel more often than this tool. The wings tend to get stuck full of "stuff" after the first plunge and makes it harder to clear out and stir again. I like the idea but am not sure how to make one not stick like this and still be able to plunge into the compost easily.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Probably the best product for a difficult job. As a small person I find the task of aerating quite difficult.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Heavy Duty product. It should last years, esp the heavy duty krinkle paint finish. I'm impressed with this product for the price.
The only down side is that the wings get filled with compost material and stick closed, but that's a minor.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
I did a lot of research before purchasing the Compost Aerator sold by Gardener's Supply. This is our 2nd Composting tool; and it's much sturdier than the original 'Wingdigger' I used for years before the 'wings' just broke off.
The 2 padded handles are a nice plus -- I'm a lefty & have the option which way to attach 2nd handle.
The 2 sets of serrated-edged wings are a nice feature, too, like mini-spades to lift & churn-up the compost, however I find the the upper 'wings' tend to lock-up when plunged into the compost & don't always expand out again.
I hope to get many years of happy composting with this tool. If there's a better tool on the marker, I'd sure like to see it!

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Packed compost is difficult to aerate. This product does an ok job. It is better than a similar single wing model I used to have. The double wing does bring more to the top than single wing models. I think if the wings were about twice as big ,I would like it more.

Comments about Compost Aerator:
This thing is just great! The last thing I want to do after gardening all day is aerate the compost with a pitchfork. I set up a wire bin beside our deck, just outside the doorway. I leave the aerator next to it (so far, no rust or sign of weathering at all!). I can simply reach over the deck railing and grab the aerator, lift and plunge a few times and then go back in. I'm willing to do that even in the winter, so I expect composting to go faster this year as a result.
Comments about Compost Aerator:
Assembly is a piece of cake, but the handle does not stay screwed tight. Sometimes the "wings" stay stuck in the closed position, but it still gets the job done.

I really like this aerator. I use it with my Deluxe Compost Bin and it's much easier on the back than trying to use a garden hoe/rake tool. It's well worth the money. If only it aerated my compost all on its own...

Comments about Compost Aerator:
Difficult to dig into thick compost. Once you get into the compost, though, it aerates well enough.
