By Linda K - a/k/a "Kats"Verified Purchaser from Harrisburg, PA on 6/8/2011
Cons:

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I'm disabled so I was looking for some easier way to aerate my composter. Unfortunately it is still too difficult to push it through to get to the bottom of the bin. As things decompose, it becomes even more difficult to use. Sounds and looks good but I wouldn't recommend it.

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I have had an Earth Machine sitting in the corner of the yard with zero production. I tried to make my own compost turner without much luck. In the month I been using this I have seen the compost pile converting into the black gold that we are all striving for.

The top pair of fins does not always open, but I have found that after it is inserted into the pile, a 90 degree twisting motion on the upstroke is very effective.

Functional but needs some tweaking ...
By Dirt DoctorVerified Purchaser from St. Louis, MO on 4/14/2011
Pros:
Easy Assembly, Works as advertised
Cons:
Doesn't penetrate well, Needs 'sharper' point
Best Uses:
Ecological Waste Disposal, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:
Master Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

The device works well in general but sometimes isn't 'sharp' enough to penetrate dense matted leaves inside the compost pile. The wings could be a little longer so that they disrupt more of the pile with each thrust and extraction. Overall, it works as advertised, but it could do a better job with a little tweaking.

Works, and gives workout, too!

Pros:
Composts Quickly, Easy Assembly, Odor Free
Cons:
Takes Work
Best Uses:
Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Master Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I use this on my leaf/grass mixture in a bin about 3 1/2 feet in height. I plunge it down, give it a 1/4 turn and pull up, in 3-4 places in the pile, every month or so. If the compost is heavy, or compacted, you really have to jam it in. It resembles a guy on a jackhammer. While doing this, you really have to put your whole body into it, so it gives a bit of a workout, too. But, once I pull it out, I can hear the air sucking in to the bottom of the pile. There is nothing else I'm aware of that can easily aerate deep into the pile, short of turning it all over with a pitchfork. It's actually a pretty clever invention. One drawback it that the lower handle is held on by a socket head bolt (aka Allen head bolt) which comes loose and has to be tightened frequently. Maybe some Loctite would help....

Cons:
Difficult to Aerate
Best Uses:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This product requires strength for optimal use. It does the job, but requires a good bit of exertion (at least in my compost). Then there is the problem of where to store it which, in my instance, is not convenient to the composter. On the positive side, this is the second one we've purchased. The first one died of old age after many years of service. Despite its faults, I haven't seen anything better on the market.

Comments about Compost Aerator:

We've only had this tool for about a month, and it's worked for us so far. The only problem is that we have had difficulty getting the old and new stuff mixed together, but that's probably our fault because we did not turn the mixture for a long time. Have not had any trouble with the handle as others mentioned.

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This is a sturdy tool that works OK in an enclosed composter that doesn't have much turning room. It would have worked better for me if I hadn't waited until the bin became a bit too filled. (My fault) Also I put in some twigs that were too long and they impeded the turning process. I then found an old, long-handled pointed hoe in the recesses of my shed and it works fairly well turning the material accumulated on the bottom of the bin.

I think it is great; I have nothing to compare it to except a pitchfork, but this is better/easier anyday! I love the 2 "wings" that fold upon insertion then open when it is removed...this really moves through all the material quite well. The rubber grip handles are key to use, lets you get a really sturdy grip to shove that thing down into the compost.

Cons:
Poorly constructed
Best Uses:
Not Usable
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

Used in small backyard composter, worked OK for a couple of turnovers, but lower handle broke off after that. Poorly designed. Handle was attached by two small spot welds which failed with light use. Junk, would be embarrassed to sell at garage sale.

Comments about Compost Aerator:

After reading other reviews I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. I have been composting for about a year and had not aerated or mixed my compost; there never seemed to be a good way to accomplish the task. Using the aerator was simple and I was able to get the task done.

Disappointed with flimsy lower handle
By Jersey GeorgeVerified Purchaser from West Orange, NJ on 3/4/2010
Pros:
Easy Assembly, Sifts Old From New
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This Garden Aerator seems tough enough at first. The only assembly is attaching the lower handle. The rest of the handle is one piece. But that lower handle is its Achilles Heal. I've only owned it since January and used it a half dozed times and the lower handle is bent and ready to break off. The weld that attaches the handle cylinder to the bolt (that attaches to main handle) is the trouble spot. Obviously a wimpy weld that broke quickly. I'll include a photo of the lower handle detached from the main to show how badly bent it is. Very disappointing. Especially since the manufacturer's (Bosmere of North Carolina) logo is "where quality counts".

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend. He had been using a shovel for turning the compost without complaint. This looked like a fun gadget and my expectations were low but it's not very expensive so I decided to go for it. Well we were pleasantly surprised. It works great! This tool makes aerating the compost fast and easy. It requires little strength to use and easily turned a combination of kitchen and yard waste. I plan to buy another one to give to my father.

Comments about Compost Aerator:

An excellent tool for turning small compost bins. Sharp point penetrates deep into compost. the double "wings" pull up the bottom compost to the top. I would suggest a little WD40 spray on the wing nuts to keep them lubercated so that the will easily open. Also keep it clean.

By Martha Stewart's competitionVerified Purchaser from Andover, MN on 12/16/2009
Pros:
Easy Assembly
Cons:
Top wings stay closed
Best Uses:
Mixes all compost
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I use my compost aerator to mix the compost in my bin; specifically to bring up the stuff from the bottom of the bin to the top. I like the aerator but the top set of paddles stick in the closed position so only the bottom paddles open to bring up the compost. It would do a better job if the top paddles opened like they're supposed to.

By RJVerified Purchaser from Morrisville, NC on 11/3/2009
Bottom Line:

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This aerator works well in our compost bin, mixing things from the bottom. The only problem is that we use the biodegradable compost container liners and they get tangled on the aerator, making it necessary to pull the nasty liner off by hand.

I like using the compost aerator: it's so easy compared to turning the pile. Often the upper wings do not open and must be manipulated by hand. Its ease of use make me aerate more often compared to the laborious and unpleasant turning with a fork. I'd recommend it to composters.

By mighty mouseVerified Purchaser from south orange on 9/3/2009
Pros:

Cons:
Handle spins off, Handle too flimsy, Pole too short
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Fertilizer Production, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Master Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I will use this because it is the best that is out there. I really like the jagged four part tip. I only wish it was a longer pole that would go further down into my compost pile. As it is, it only penetrates the third top of the pile. I still have to use a pitch fork to go deep.

I also do not like the handle. A part of it spins as I use it, to the point of coming apart.

Functional!
By BoiseVeggieGardenerVerified Purchaser from Boise, Idaho on 8/1/2009
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This aerator is sturdy and the wings drop down very well. It looks like it will stay functional for several years, time will tell. It does take some strength and a height over 5'6" to do a good job getting the tool fully submerged into the compost in my stationary top-loading composter. So, aerating has become my husband's job! At the same time that I purchased the aerator, I also purchased the newly available GSC-exclusive Compost Tumbler. The tumbler does it's own aerating! Very happy with this new addition, but I do need to keep the top-loading composter functioning as well, because our city's solid waste company has set new stringent standards as to how much trash may be picked up each week, so we MUST compost. The aerator is definitely worth the price.

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This product is comfortable and designed well. I did not give it 5 stars because the tip that gets pushed through the compost does not cut through the compacted compost easy enough. Also the lower set of wings get stuck in the upright position requiring you to pull out of the compost sharply to make both sets of wings expand and properly aerate.

When I ordered this, I couldn't quite visualize how it worked, but I decided to try it on the basis of the positive reviews. The turning over of the compost is very easy with this tool, since I have had both thumb joints removed it is very difficult to turn my compost with a pitchfork and this tool is absolutely the best solutions out there!
The assembly was very easy and it went together with not difficulties. I Love IT!

Not a great tool
By GardenerVerified Purchaser from Baker City, OR on 6/2/2009
Pros:
Easy Assembly
Cons:
Difficult to Aerate
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Master Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This tool is a great idea, but I'm not at all happy with it. The top "wings" do not open when it is used in the compost pile or bin. They need to open to aerate the pile. I may decide to contact Gardener's supply and return the tool. It is not worth it's money. First product Ik've felt was useless that I ordered from Gardener's Supply.

Pros:
Attractive
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This tool seems to do just what it claimed it would. I poke it down into my compost and twist it about and as I pull up the little wings fan out to help get the stuff mixed. The padded handle helps me grip the tool and makes the process more comfortable. The tool feels as if it will hold up for a while. I made the mistake of throwing ivy in the composter and the long vines got hung up in it so I won't do that again. But I am happy with this product.[...]

Cons:
None
Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

Was skeptical after reading some reviews, but this tool is great. Just twist if tool doesn't plunge easily down into pile. Tip is pointed enough, and wings will open freely if you tweak it a little with flathead screwdriver and pliers. It helps to shred leaves first, but grass and leaves are no problem for this tool. Compost bin is steaming and hot every time I aerate it. This tool is great design and works as advertised. We're using "earth machine" compost bin.

Comments about Compost Aerator:

It does not do well with a compost pile which has not been "maintained" as the grass clippings and leaves do form impenetrable layers. If you take care of the pile on a regular basis, as you should, this product will do the job as advertised. It is solidly build and appear to be able to withstand the abuse of outdoor elements.

It woerks much better for tunring over the compost in my composter than my old garden fork did. With this tool, I can reach the bottom of the pile and pull it to the top> I nvere used to be able to reach down low enough before. It does require cleaning with a hose afterward (some of the compost catches and stays in the hinged 'flippers' but it's well worth it.

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I put off buying this for over a year thinking that I was doing just fine with a pitchfork. This year, after moving and getting a bigger compost bin, I decided to give it a shot. It's worth every penny.

I was surprised how easily the aerator penetrated to the bottom of the compost bin and how well it did on mixing. In just a few jabs, I can mix my entire bin. Plus, since this tool goes in straight, I don't spear the sides of the compost bin like I did with a pitchfork.

I think we're going to get one for my wife's parents who are in their sixties and just getting into composting. This will save their backs!

Two handles for thrust
Cons:
Difficult to Aerate, Wings do not open
Best Uses:
Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I bought this last year, and I also prefer my old pitchfork. I like the two handles; it provides better thrust into the pile. However, it STILL doesn't penetrate far. The end needs to be tapered to a point. I also think that where the wings attach needs to fold flush with the pole. Wings don't open properly as is. Very frustrating.

Compost Aerator with Dual Wings
By dglocksterVerified Purchaser from DFW, Texas on 3/29/2009
Pros:
Attractive, Easy Assembly, Sifts Old From New
Cons:
Difficult to Aerate, Needs Solution Added
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Fruit Rinds, Kitchen Scraps, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

The wings on the aerator do not expand as they should to provide thorough turning of the compost. They have such a fine tolerance that the compost matter prevents the wings from dropping down. If the wings of the product had a looser tolerance they would work as advertised. In addition, the leading point of the aerator should be longer, narrower, and more pointed to make penetration to the bottom of the compost pile easier.

The double handles make aerator easier to turn but they don't outweigh problematic wing design.

By BuzzVerified Purchaser from San Diego on 3/17/2009
Cons:
Difficult to Aerate
Describe Yourself:
Master Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I tried this in my composter I use primarily for yard waste so the debris is rather chunky. The aerator would only punch through the top layers of the compost and pulled out without the "wings" opening, thus having no effect at all. A rather expensive tool to throw away. My pitchfork may be somewhat clumsy to use but at least it works.

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This is the most useful item invented for compost management in ages! It easily aerates and mixes the compost from bottom to top. It is designed to dive to the bottom of the pile with the blades folded in, and when you pull, the blades expand --mixing and aerating the compost. I use it at home with my rotating barrel composter and at our community gardens with commercial bins. You need this if you compost!

The upper set of wings did not open and close easily. The tubing above these wings needed to be squeezed slightly in a vise in order for the wings to move freely. Comments about Compost Aerator:

A little hard to impale the pile with but will pull up massive amounts of compost. Our heaps our 3+ feet deep and this will penetrate all the way to the bottom and pull up a massive amount of compost to the top. Great! The two handles offset set by 90 degrees are helpful. The flaring wings do a great job of pulling up the heap from the bottom (essential for aeration!). Good job. This unit does not appear close to breaking, yet, either. Thanks.

Compost aerator ineffective
By PA Master GardenerVerified Purchaser from Lancaster on 10/18/2008
Cons:
Difficult to Aerate
Describe Yourself:
Master Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I purchaed this product to aerate my compost bin. I thought the "wing" feature would make it easier and improve aeration.
It is does not penetrate the pile/compost bin contents easily....an understatement! Even with using brute force it does not go deep into the materials being composted. I tried using it with a wire open compost pile of just grass and shredded twigs etc and could not get any pepetration. Needs a sharp point or something. I am very disappointed with the product. I have gone back to a pitch fork and hoe.

Compost Aerator
By EverettVerified Reviewer from NEPA on 10/6/2008
Pros:
Cleans easily, Pierces Tough Compost, Sturdy construction
Cons:
Needs Physical Strength, Requires Cleaning
Best Uses:
All Compostable Materials, Confined Compost Piles
Describe Yourself:
Professional Landscaper
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

Although I don't use this near as much as I should - I try to convince the kids to do it when they bring materials out to the compost pile - it does a much better job on the confined compost pile than the fork does.

A digging fork - or compost fork - might be ideal for a big, spreading open pile where you can get at material from all angles, but for anything in a confined bin, you need to be able to pierce straight down and then lift up to aerate materials. A fork can do the piercing, it might even do some turning or shifting with great effort, but it's not going to lift and mix layers in a confined space.

This product does take some physical strength. A pile that's sat and settled for too long takes a lot of force to pierce into; the more aerated the pile is kept, the easier this becomes. Lifting a packed wet pile can also require arm strength and, unless you're standing on a raised platform, you're not likely to be able to apply any other leverage. Keeping things mixed correctly as far as brown & green materials and keeping the compost pile properly aerated all along makes the effort much easier.

Certain objects - especially large materials - can get stuck or cause hang-ups and increase the force required to move the aerator. These can be prevented by cutting materials prior to composting - which speeds things up anyway - or dealt with as a fact of lazy composting.

The wings do stick occasionally, generally with packed, wet, or large materials. Smaller pieces and/or more frequent aeration prevents this from happening.

Materials do cling under the wings; this is a natural result of the design needed in order for them to function. Larger materials can be scraped or brushed off with another tool, and the remainder washes off easily.

Works just as I had hoped
By EricVerified Purchaser from Eagle, Wi on 10/6/2008
Pros:
Easy Assembly
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I followed a suggestion I saw in earlier reviews of using WD-40 on the "wing" rivit point in order to make certain they would open up and have not had any problems with them getting stuck in the closed position.

works well on partially composted piles
By LauraVerified Purchaser from Hershey, PA on 9/30/2008
Pros:
Aerates
Cons:
Gets stuck on leaves
Best Uses:
Coffee Grounds, Kitchen Scraps
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I used this on compost piles that are layers of leaves and kitchen scraps. In areas where there were leaves that aerator got stuck on the leaves. I had to pull the leaves off the aerator before I could continue. It works great if your piles is already loosely packed - the aerator slides right down to the bottom of the pile.

Best Uses:
Fertilizer Production
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I've found your aerator tool works well. With the two grip handles, the plunging and removal from the compost makes the use less of a challenge and more of a pleasure. Cleaning of the tool was a little difficult without a garden hose nearby but overall nice design.

Just ok
By RichVerified Purchaser from Flemington, NJ on 9/15/2008
Pros:
Easy to handle
Cons:
Wings sometimes don't ope
Best Uses:
Compost production
Describe Yourself:
Getting Started
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

.....just barely. This compost aerator has a somewhat pointed end, so you can work it into your compost pile with a lot of "back and forth" digging. Then, when you go to pull up the compost from the bottom, the wings sometimes stay jammed against the pole so that it doesn't always work. Not much more effective than a simple pitch fork.

Best Uses:
Ecological Waste Disposal, Kitchen Compost
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

The two reasons I purchased this particular compost aerator are 1. the double off-set handles that angle your grip to increase strength and decrease discomfort 2. the double set of wings that increase efficiecy.
This aeroator was designed intelligently.

Cons:
Not worth price
Best Uses:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I would recommend to a new and timid gardener but would not buy again for myself. I bought it because a friend and Master Gardener said she liked it. She also has more money and likes spending it better than I do. Probably not better than a broom handle.

A nice addition
By PunterVerified Purchaser from Wisconsin on 8/26/2008
Pros:
Composts Quickly, Easy Assembly
Cons:
Difficult to Aerate
Best Uses:
Ecological Waste Disposal, Fruit Rinds, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This is a good addition to our compost pile, alongside a sturdy small fork. Solidly made, like the double prongs and handles. The only complaint I have is that the "fans" of the blades don't open as easily as I'd like, so I greased them and that helped, but they stick closed if they get into the heavy stuff. But it is good for getting air way down into the bottom.

Compost Aerator comes up "short"
By The Dirt DiggerVerified Purchaser from Wilmington, DE on 7/10/2008

Cons:
Back bending, Hard to clean off, Short length
Best Uses:
Fertilizer Production, Fruit Rinds, Good Aerator, Leaves & Brush
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

Short pole means bending and lifting over a large compost pile. Really turns and grabs well, but sometimes means large clumps are heavy and cumbersome. After aerating the pile which it does well, it's sometimes messy and hard to clean off.

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This is my first experience with a compost aerator so I can't compare it to others. But I tend to reach for a shovel more often than this tool. The wings tend to get stuck full of "stuff" after the first plunge and makes it harder to clear out and stir again. I like the idea but am not sure how to make one not stick like this and still be able to plunge into the compost easily.

Cons:
Upper wings lock-up
Best Uses:
Compost aerating
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Compost Aerator:

I did a lot of research before purchasing the Compost Aerator sold by Gardener's Supply. This is our 2nd Composting tool; and it's much sturdier than the original 'Wingdigger' I used for years before the 'wings' just broke off.

The 2 padded handles are a nice plus -- I'm a lefty & have the option which way to attach 2nd handle.

The 2 sets of serrated-edged wings are a nice feature, too, like mini-spades to lift & churn-up the compost, however I find the the upper 'wings' tend to lock-up when plunged into the compost & don't always expand out again.

I hope to get many years of happy composting with this tool. If there's a better tool on the marker, I'd sure like to see it!

Bottom Line:

Comments about Compost Aerator:

This thing is just great! The last thing I want to do after gardening all day is aerate the compost with a pitchfork. I set up a wire bin beside our deck, just outside the doorway. I leave the aerator next to it (so far, no rust or sign of weathering at all!). I can simply reach over the deck railing and grab the aerator, lift and plunge a few times and then go back in. I'm willing to do that even in the winter, so I expect composting to go faster this year as a result.

Comments about Compost Aerator:

Difficult to dig into thick compost. Once you get into the compost, though, it aerates well enough.
