So I order 18 tons of organic topsoil to fill my new (and huge) garden of raised beds, and I figure I'd better not take the seller's word for it. I should know for myself what I'm feeding my plants. Got the test kit. Did all the tests. Lo and behold, my 18 tons of glorious dirt has barely a trace of phosphates. Needed to be acidified, too. While I'm not impressed with my expensive dirt, I love the test kit!

After years of failing to send out soil samples, we found this kit and gave it a try. Have used it on three different samples from very different areas of our 3 acres, and the results are pretty similar, which makes me a little suspicious. Too soon to tell if what the test recommended is correct. But it's easy to use, and if the results are reliable, then it's worth it. After a month or two, I'll return to report how the plants did.

I STARTED A BRAND NEW VEGIE GARDEN AND THIS PRODUCT HELPED ME DETERMINE WHAT THE SOIL WAS LACKING. THEN I WAS ABLE TO AMMEND THE SOIL ACORDINGLY.

The test kit said I needed Nitrogen and the ph was very high. I added the prescribed ingredients and my plants do look much better this year. So I guess it told me the right things. We'll see how it turns out.

I use this kit to test the compost coming out of the bin before I place it on my garden. I can therefore fix the potential problem by adding the needed item to my compost tumbler, turning it a bit and use the finish compost on my garden in a day or so.

This is a very handy soil tester--clear instructions and easy to use. But Gardener's Supply needs to carry replacement test cartridges, or the kit will be worthless once the ones that come with run out.

Product is easy to use, but time-consuming and the color scales on some tests are difficult to read against the sample. Good for a quick look, but not nearly as informative as a professional soil analysis.

We had moved 2 years ago, I was delighted to see a garden spot. However I was rather disappointed with the veggies when they finally came up. I had tried a regular fertilizer, and everything was still small and few veggies per plant. The 2nd year was worse, pretty much just the weeds grew. This year I tried the test kit first. The test was very easy and fun, the directions were clear and well written. I could not believe the results! The handy info brochure explained the correlation between where the soil was too high or too low and what I saw in the garden. It also gave me information on pH for specific plants, and how to correct the N,P,K and pH findings. When I went to get my supplies to correct the soil, the gentleman who helped was also very impressed with the information the soil test kit gave me, apparently many kits aren't as informative.

I have heavy clay soil, so have over the years ammended with sand and quite a bit of mulch. I've had good peas, tomatoes, peppers..., but I could never get root crops to grow. With this test kit I found the bed was totally depleted of nitrogen. Added a bag of mulched cow manure, and for the first time I actually have 2-inch onion bulbs. More improvement coming, but the test was extremely helpful. I really liked having the full spectrum to test.
The only downside was the time required to let the soil settle. (typical of clay and not fault of the kit!) It was still faster and cheaper than sending off samples to a lab.
