When Native Americans sowed their crops, they didn’t use tractors or plows. To keep valuable seed from blowing away or being eaten by birds, they often hid it inside little balls of clay. The same method works well today: just scatter these seed balls on prepared soil and keep moist.

  • 16 seed balls per set; each ball contains 20 to 30 seeds
  • Seeds will germinate in 7 to 30 days depending on weather
  • Includes various sizes and colors of sunflowers

    Comments about Sunflower Seed Balls:

I got several of these Balls as Christmas Stocking stuffers for some Grand Kids and my Daughter. I got some funny looks at the time but now that summer is here, you wouldn't believe what fun and beuty and education these beautiful sun flowers are providing. Some were just tossed against the fence line and forgotten until they came up so tall and vigorous. All the neighbors are now waiting for the seeds . Had fun teaching kids how the Indians carried their seeds from home to home many years ago. I may even try making some seed balls for myself.

    Comments about Sunflower Seed Balls:

I bought these for Commando Gardening. A group of fellow biker/gardeners got together for an urban assault in the concrete jungles of the S.side of Chicago. Our mission: to beautify the abandoned lot, the scruffy playground, the overgrown edge of the curb. Seed balls are fantastic for this purpose. Nothing is more involved than riding up to a likely location, tossing a couple of handfuls out and hoping for rain! While you can easily make them yourself, l needed to be realistic about my time constraints, hence the ready-made seed balls. They worked great. And a neat bonus was that many of the plants have gently reseeded over time. (tip: if you do this at home, don't use seeds from invasive species like morning glory or loosestrife)

I will note here that my 4 year old went NUTS using them. We do a lot of flower and vegetable planting together, so she knows how to cultivate even tiny seeds, but something about the large and oh-so-concrete nature of the seed balls really floated her boat. They are very tactile and fun to work with.

I followed the directions but the clay balls disintegrated and no seeds sprouted. The regular seeds I planted grew fine.

    Comments about Sunflower Seed Balls:

I followed the instructions on the package, but not even one Seed Ball bloomed. It was really disappointing particularly because I set them out with a group of small children who all anxiously waited for sunflowers that never even sprouted.

    Comments about Sunflower Seed Balls:

I was hoping to have sunflowers in front of my house. This looked like an easy project. I followed the simple instructions carefully but either the squirrels did away with the seedballs or they just didn't germinate. -Very disappointing.
