I was very excited when I received my new shovel, but when I actually tried it I was really disappointed. I thought it would cut through the soil like butter, not so. I'm not very tall, just under 5 ft. and maybe that's why I was having so much trouble and I'm not as young as I used to be. I will keep trying, but I'm ready to go back and use my old shovel. I use this product in Flagstaff, Arizona where the ground is riddled with rocks. This shovel cut through Ponderosa pine roots with as much ease as it does hard packed soil. The shovel is sturdy and comfortable. It is also very lightweight and easy to handle. However, the handle could use approximately 24 to 36 more inches in length. The middle tooth broke, a very unfortunate event when depending on this shovel to prepare your backyard for planting grass in our somewhat limited growing season. Gardener's Supply has offered to replace the shovel.

I did not feel much improvement in the force needed to dig with this shovel over using a v-shaped one. The width of the shovel does create a wider cut, though, so more is accomplished with the same effort.

Oh yeah! I saw this puppy when it came out of the box and immediately fell in love. We live in an area with clay soil. Clay gets soggy in the winter, and super hard in the summer. I used the shovel to break up some compacted dirt around my trees and it cut right through the dirt with no problem! Traditional shovels require more work and force to break up tough clay. With this super shovel I just cut right in and gave the shovel a good twist to break up the dirt.
I did list a con about this product...the handle could be a little taller for jobs that require longer periods of time as the small handle could cause back strain. Other than that, it's great! A must for those of you who have very compacted soil...the teeth just dig in!

I live in an area with more rocks and slate than soil. This got me through everything to get an area to landscape. My husband and I put it to some difficult places in removing roots, rock, slate, and some strange construction debris. This shovel handled it all. Here in SC the soil is red clay and rocky. This is the first shovel that has proven to dig the full depth of the blade. It is great for planting shrub or roses and get through root mass. The only thing I would change would be the handle. Add 12" and you have perfection.

As a woman I love this shovel. It really does the job on packed soil and packed manure. My 6'3" husband says the handle is a bit on the short size, but at 5'7", it's fine for me. So, have you ever tried to split huge leaf and overall mammoth size hosta? I have trouble just digging a hole to put in new plants ... What made me think I could split the hosta? My main purpose for this shovel was to dig through root balls of liriope that was overgrown. It did not make a dent in the roots and I feel part of the reason is that the handle is too short. My husband laughed at me when I opened the box with my new Super Shovel. I ran right down to my garden and started dividing the speedwell, coreopsis, and lamb's ear perennials I had been putting off (OK, for at least a year. They were really crowded!) I was delighted that I dug each plant out with relative ease from my (amended, but still) clay soil. Then SCRUNCH- one foot on the shovel with one clean push and each plant was divided. Every new plant now is thriving. Literally, my new shovel helped me accomplish the dreaded dividing task in half the time. I wish I'd found it earlier! I was able to turn under my veggie garden cover crop before more snow and soggy soil. Yes, its good garden soil, but this shovel was like a HOT KNIFE slicing butter! I also tried turning our crushed granite (mountain) soil and I was able to do it! That's a big deal, as my back is almost entirely fused and I have Fibromyalgia. This shovel didn't stress my body at all. I will add an additional handle to the front to assist lifting and turning.

I have really put this shovel to the test. My yard is well established with many large trees. I wanted to be able to dig up an area that was over grown with ivy beneath these trees. This is one tough shovel. I was able to pry beneath very woody roots. It didn't slice through the roots as I had originally hoped. This is because it is not a thin sharp cutting blade across the mouth of the shovel. It is thicker sturdy steel really heavy duty. It has quickly become one of my favorite tools.

Very good--used it to clear a 25' x 30' area of 65 year old forsythia "stumps" and root systems that had outlived their time. The "thermo nuclear", as I call it, shovel was a real help in clearing the mass of stumps and roots. It's really rugged.

Living in St. Charles County, Missouri; the soil is heavy clay and rocky. This shovel does a great job of cutting through both. It even does a good job of cutting through small roots. I recently dug a 50' dry creek bed and it made life (and back) much easier.

Our lot has patches of rocky clay soil that has been compressed by recent building. I was trying to dig a hole with a regular shovel and could get no deeper than 4 inches. I switched to this one and was able to dig a hole big enough to plant a one gallon plant pretty quickly. It really did an excellent job of getting through the clay, and didn't do a dead stop on rocks it encountered like a regular shovel. I wish the handle was a bit longer, but other than that I am very happy with this shovel. I think we will become best buddies as I continue landscaping my yard. :-)

This shovel cuts through caliche, roots, KR bluestem grass and black clay. The perfect tool for Hill Country TX. What it doesn't get the mattock conquers.
2 of my friends have requested it for 2009 XMAS gift early after using to dig tree and post holes in the above mentioned soil type. 22 holes in 4 days and no back pain.

The only complaint from anyone who has borrowed it from me is the handle is a little short.

This shovel was purchased to replace a home-made version whose tines had snapped. While this shovel will be sturdier because of the smaller teeth and broader blade, I liked the deeper serrations all along the edge of my home-made blade. Our soil is mostly clay with quartz veins running throughout it. I recently used this shovel to dig a 45 foot trench through it with no problem. I was amazed - our other shovel usually bounces on top of the soil when you try to dig. This one cuts right through.

It is a little short though. I'm 5'5" and had to bend over a bit to use it. It's not too bad, but it wears on you after a full day of digging.

This appears to be a sturdy, well-made tool but it did not penetrate our hard, clay soil the way we had hoped. I think the problem is the points are squared-off instead of tapered. I'm going to try sharpening it with a file as I do with our other shovels.

I didn't find it any more useful to dig amongst roots/rocks than any other shovel. I garden a lot in the woods, so that was what I bought it for. It works fine for normal digging. I like the handle and size for planting under normal conditions. It gets under chipped-wood mulch good, maybe better than other shovels; and can be used to help spread it if you don't have a fork handy. I don't think the cost is justified when it doesn't out-perform a regular 'toothless' shovel of comparable size and material.

I'm always hoping for an easier time when I plant shrubs and small trees. Unfortunately, this shovel was not much better than any other. The shovel did not cut through roots and I went back to using a pickax to cut roots and make headway in the clay soil. For general use, it works fine and I like that it's not too big and not too small for many jobs.

I love the balance and design of this product. It gives me an effortless motion to any task. The size of this product for my body frame 5'5" is ideal. I have used this to divide iris as well as remove grass from topsoil to enhance garden coverage. I have been searching for some time for this item. A useful shovel but did not live up to claims of "slicing through clay and roots". But overall a good shovel.

This is the only shovel that will get through the rocky clay builder's fill that most of my landscape is planted on. We used to use a pitch fork, until the tines bent, but this does a much better job. It will enable you to garden where you thought you couldn't. Highly recommended.

I BOUGHT THIS HOPING THAT FOR THE HIGHER PRICE I'D BE GETTING A SHOVEL THAT COULD SHEAR THROUGH ROOTS, LIKE IT CLAIMS TO. I REALLY DON'T FIND IT MUCH MORE USEFUL THAN A REGULAR SHOVEL.
