I find that I need to figure out how to put a screen on the water holder as junk and leaves get in and cause problems.
I am going to try also to put fertiliser in it to see how that does
Comments about Plant Sitter:
The idea is good, but the spikes don't pick up enough water to keep the plants alive. The spike material is inconsistent and that could be part of the problem as some plants got more water than others. Possibly elevating the waterer will allow gravity to help, I haven't tried that yet. Over all, I would not get them again.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Went on vacation for 2 weeks, was skeptical that anything could keep my rather large planters of hibiscus alive for that long but I used the suggested amount of plant sitters for the size pot, inserted each plant sitters tubing into a gallon milk jug filled with water and when I came back the plants not only were alive but blooming! I think these plant sitters are great. . .
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I purchased 3-packs of cones and used my own buckets for water. Two cones went into the large (12") planters and 1 in the 6" pots. Went on vacation for 10 days and when I came back all of my plants were alive and looked good! Since then, I have kept the cones in the plants and just keep filling the buckets of water. Some green slime seems to grow in the buckets but that does not seem to prevent the cones from working (I clean the buckets out every few weeks). Be sure to soak the cones then fill them up before you put them in the soil, and again if the water ever runs out.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
They work farily well for smaller pots. Several are required for med/large pots which makes them a bit pricy
Comments about Plant Sitter:
These are great. They keep my garden (in pots) alive when I take short trips.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Both the water containers are still full after more than a week. I had high hopes for this product. But have had much more success with the Plant Nanny system.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Having to be gone from home days at a time I need something easy to set up, usable without electricity, and uncomplicated. I put my water above the cones and suck the water into the tubes to insure a good flow. Kept my plants healthy and will be used frequently, even when I am home. I use two in big pots and have used with new plantings such as bare root rose bushes and seeds just getting started.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Had to remember to refill the little cones when adding new water. Saved me from being "controlled" by my plants as to how I can come and go.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
These cones allow me to be gone for a couple weeks and I don't need to worry about my house plants. Also use them outside to keep pots watered -- extends the time between waterings (so my watering helpers love them too). I use empty milk and soda containers to hold the water.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I use Plant Sitters full-time for large plants in our sunroom - as a safety precaution against drying out. I set up more Sitters with all other houseplants during periods of my absence. They're unobtrusive, efficient, and easy to use, and need only periodic cleaning to prevent algae clogging...
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Make sure to fill the entire product before you begin to use it. It works WELL! It adds a constant flow of water. It wasn't suited for my indoor plant needs, but to keep an outdoor plant well watered it will be awesome! Clever little product.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
This is the best product for watering. My plants always have the right amount of water when they want it. Eliminates guessing and overwatering all year long. I would recommend them for anyone; avid, beginner or professional gardener.
I thank you and my plants thank you
Comments about Plant Sitter:
if you set it up properly and keep water in the container it will do a perfect job of plant hydration
for an extended period and does not over-water ever.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I use these all the time. Just place a decorative jug (to hold water) nearby and put the end of the line in it after soaking the clay cone and putting it in the pot. I just keep the jugs full and my plants are doing great.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I purchased the plant sitter system and several packets of watering cones to use for some indoor potted herbs throughout the summer and while I am out of town. The herbs are in small pots and I had a hard time keeping them moist enough to grow well. The plant sitter system wasn't great - the reservoir is fine, but the watering cone that came with it was terrible and I ended up substituting one of the other watering cones. Unless you need a container that hangs from the side of the pot, I'd recommend getting the watering cones and creating your own water reservoirs from other containers - this also allows you to adjust the capacity of the water reservoir according to the plant's needs and location. I hung old wine bottles from the underside of the shelf that the herbs sit on. The cone wicks are just long enough to reach the bottom of the bottles. In some cases - for larger pots or plants that use more water, I put two cones in a pot. The only herb death was due to the fact that I let the water reservoir go dry and didn't refill the top of the cone when I refilled the reservoir. These have worked wonderfully!
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I tried these on several plants. With some I used my own containers and two were used with the plastic containers that attach to the pot that you can buy with them. There was very little water movement into the planter.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I bought one kit and a pack of extra cones. Using jugs I use the cones primarily for fertilizing my plants through slow steady drip irrigation. The dose seems to be just big enough that the plants thrive beautifully from the continuous flow of nutrients. However, I do tend to add additional water every few days because my plants are quite big and require more water than the cones deliver. Maybe if I added extra cones to each plant, the irrigation would work better. Also, I find that the siphon works best if you fill the hose lines with water as well as the cones during installation. It does not say to this in the instructions, but it guarantees a better working siphon. Also raising the water reservoir helps the flow rate for gravity is on your side. One draw back is that the hoses are not very long so you can't raise the reservoir too high.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I tested it with a transparent jar and it works. It is easy to set up. More than one cone maybe needed for more water.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I bought this for when I travelled and wanted to keep my herb container garden watered while I was gone. I came back to a garden of dead and dried herbs with the container still full. It seem to work the first day - but then it stopped.
Don't waste your money or risk your plants.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
I bought the Plant Sitters for several house plants that seem to be constantly needing water. They are awesome! I bought just the cones and use gallon jugs for them. That way I don't have to worry about the plants for at least 2 weeks. Most of my plants only needed one cone per plant. I gave my fuchsia two cones. My fuchsia flowers are hugh!!! They are finally getting the right amount of water. I am VERY happy with this product.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
We bought this to keep our outdoor plants well hydrated while we were gone for several days. Unfortunately, it just does not work. The water level in the tank goes down too slowly to keep the plants alive. We've continued to test it but our results continue to be poor.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I did not care for the plant sitters nearly as much as the frog and cylinder drip-it watering systems. For some unknown reason the water did not transfer from the water holding container to the cones. I tried them in different plants and had the same poor results. Only one performed fairly well. The other 3 have been sitting with the cones for 3 months and nothing has transferred.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Don't recommend for hanging plants because it is to large and balky and doesn't look nice but I do like it for outside potted plants.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
After my friend nearly killed my basil on my last vacation I got some of these cones. They kept my plants in great shape for a week. Waters just the right amount. Easy to setup with a few minor hassles. The weight on the end of the hose is not quite heavy enough and sinking the hose to the bottom of the supply tank could be easier. The lid on the tank does not latch closed very securely either. Other than those minor things, these are great.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Carfully follow the directions since the siphon must be working for the water to flow. The product seemed to work well although I did not do a controlled test. You can use any water container as a resevoir.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I found this product great for my flowers at my cabin which I only get to every 10 days or so.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Works just as advertised
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I used this in a pot and an upside down tomato plant, and it does not appear to do its job, and most annoyingly the top does not close well or in one case at all, leading to trash in the water container and a breeding ground for mosquitos.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
The Denver area gets very hot and dry in the summer. This plant sitter helped keep my outdoor plants (in full sun) moist enough to survive my vacation (12 days). However, I did have to have a neighbor fill the tanks every 3-5 days. I think it would work well in a less arid climate. The stakes that came with the tank were flimsy and 2 of the tops broke right away. The additional stakes I bought separately seem of better quality. My recommendation is that you try them out a week before you leave, so you know how quickly the plants drain the tank.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I use the plant sitter in the house for my house plants. I sometimes forget to water so my plants are thriving now. I also use the plant sitter all year long for my outdoor plants. We live in a high desert, plants require watering everyday. With the plant sitter I water once a week, without having to worry if we decide to go camping or are just busy. I have used the product to make my planters I have into more water efficient.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I bought these for my plants on the patio while I went out of town for 5 days. I live in Texas where the temps got up to 100* while I was gone. I put the plants in the shade to reduce water loss, and they all looked great when I returned. I am going to continue to use them to supplement my watering everyday, since I have so many. These nifty little gadgets are highly recommended. Just don't let the reservoir run out of water...
Comments about Plant Sitter:
This product saves my back! The only problem is that the optional tool case does not fit the larger model. (I was told it did)
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I am a very busy professional, but I can't exist without house plants in my environment! I hesitated to purchase these cones because I didn't believe that they would adequately water my plants. Boy was I wrong! My plants are thriving and growing like never before. The visual cue of an emptying reservoir of water is invaluable to making sure my plants stay well watered. I even use the cones to fertilize when necessary. No clogging, No discoloration. Just perfectly watered, happy plants.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
I love the Plant Sitter. It keeps your plants watered for quite a while (depending on how big your water reservoir is). You can leave on vacation and not worry about your plants sitting in the hot sun on the patio. Green is the big buzz word today, so be green! No need to buy the plastic bin with it. Instead, use a gallon sized plastic milk jug, set it up and forget it - at least for a while.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
These are excellent for outdoor plants that need more frequent watering! Also, for indoor plants. I usually put 3 per medium-sized pot. I order more each year; furthermore, they are very sturdy and hardy! I will continue to order MORE each year.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
We have a townhome in Houston and are away most weekends. I put these in the plants and put the ends in a gallon water jug and they keep my plants watered until we get home. Pretty easy.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I purchased the plant sitters to keep my garden alive while I was out of town for three weeks. However, the plant sitters just sat there. I was fortunate enough to have a family member come over one week into my travels to check on my plants. The reservoirs were still full and my garden was nearly dead! To the best of my knowledge, I followed the instructions precisely and the product did not work. I would not purchase the plant sitters again.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I find these very useful for my cabin and my
garden. I don't have to worry when I'm gone a
week or two.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
While in general they worked sufficiently so that my plants did not die while I was away, the actual wicking power was weak. As a result, there was uneven moisture in the soil, and some areas were actually dry.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
Before I went on a two week cruise I checked this website for ideas on how to keep several large plants (both outdoor and indoor) alive while I was gone. I purchased 3 spikes for each plant. Based on an idea I read here I also bought some plastic tubs (the kind you can put in your sink for dishes or small pieces of laundry). I filled these tubs with water then put the ends of the watering tubes into them. The tubes floated so I threaded them through the tines of salad forks to keep them anchored to the bottom of the tub. When I returned the tubs still had about 2 inches of water left and my plants thrived even though the outdoor temperature stayed pretty much in the high 90's to low 100 degrees. I am a very satisfied customer who can now travel without worry! The tubes appear to have some algae inside so I plan to clean them before using them again.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I travel for business and was away for 10 days after transfering my fragile heirloom tomato seedlings to pots. The cones worked perfectly and my seedlings were ready to move to the garden when I returned.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
We go away often in the summer and I can be sure my plants, both inside and outside in planters, will not go dry! When we come home, they are still in great shape. Outside I put a half gallon jug behind the planter and it is hidden and does the job as I have never received the water tank that attaches to the planter!

Comments about Plant Sitter:
I bought this to water a much cherished gardenia plant while on a 2 week vacation. Fortunately, I tested it out a week before going and saw that it was not in fact, watering the plant. I set it up correctly (not that difficult!), water level below the ceramic water diffuser, but the water is not making its way to the diffuser and the plant. A shame. I thought this would be a great idea.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Useful product. I'm using them for outdoor plants. If the pots are in the full sun you will need more than the recommended amount. I'm using four or five in each hanging pot.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
The Plant Sitter works well for a large window box (72") that is displayed on the front of the house. There are two at each end and they are unobtrusive. I use it for everyday watering on summer petunias because the eaves on the house prevent rain from reaching the plants. Since I don't water from the top with a hose, the plants are less damaged and are thriving.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
The plant sitter is great! It really delivers the optimal amount of water to your plants. I bought for when I would be on vacation & now leave them on all the time & just add water to the tank instead of directly to the plant.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
I purchased this product for my Mom, and she thinks it's great. Don't let it run out of water or it will lose the siphon. It's a great time saver. I'm going to purchase some for myself. I'm not a Master Gardener but my parents are.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
I've been using these to water my plants for over a year. They work great once you get the elevation right. (If you place your water container too low, relative to the cone, your plant will dry out. If you place the water container too high, it will slowly flood the plant, and eventually your floor.)
In case you're wondering, these work sort of like a siphon. The ceramic acts much like a lamp wick that supplies water to the surrounding soil when it gets dry. As water is drawn through the cone, a vacuum is created inside of it, which sucks water from the container. It's the only passive watering device that I've ever seen work.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I am just getting started using this watering system for containers on my deck. It appears promising and If I like how it performs, I will purchase more.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
We got this product to keep the container plants at church alive and well between waterings, sometimes as long as a week. So far the plants are looking well tended and healthy. No complaints so far. Since all our plants are donated we appreciate products that keep them alive and healthy. This product has prevented the annual problem with plant loss due to infrequent waterings. We have to rely on parishioners to come in and water, this product takes over when someone misses a day.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
The idea of the thimbles is great but the ceramic the thimbles are made of is too porous. This allows too much water to be [...] to the pot/plant, which is not necessary nor desired. The ceramic should have smaller pores so that soil moisture tension will be more effective at controlling soil moisture and preventing the pot/plant from become too wet.

It did not selfwatering. I did waste of
money.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
I used the cones for my out door plants in containers while I was on vacation for 10 days. I live in the desert and the outside temperature was in the high 90's will I was away. I used one cone in the smaller pots, two in most, and 3 in one of my plants that I would be so upset if it died, it is an avocado tree I started from seed a few years ago! When I came back I was pleasantly surprised with what I found, there was a lot of new growth and lots of blooming flowers everywhere. Like the other reviewers stated, the plants are doing better with the cones than all of my years of watering by hand! When I received the cones I tested them a few weeks before I went on vacation to make sure they would work. Theses cones work so well that I plan to use them even when I'm not away.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
I hesitated getting this system because I didn't believe they would actually work. I couldn't have been more wrong. I know that I either under or over water my plants. Lately, they weren't looking as healthy as they should, so I broke down and purchased both the reservoir system for my larger plants and a series of the standalone spikes for smaller plants. I use a decorative vase as their water source.
This system takes the guesswork out of watering task. My plants are now thriving, and I am provided with a constant visual of when they need water. Don't waste your money on the all glass bulbs.
This is the system to go for if you want a sure way to keep your plants hydrated just right. I've already told all my friends and family about this and will be making more purchases as gifts as the need arise!

It works great! I don't have to water every day.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
I bought several of these cones for my indoor containers. My herb pots are much happier now with the consistent moisture. I used one cone for each 9" pot with basil, parsley, oregano, cherry tomatoes and mini-peppers. I tied a weight to the end of the flexible tube and dropped it into my own large bucket with a lid. Since I travel a lot, these cones are a plant saver and my cooking is improved with fresher herbs.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
The watering cones work great when you are on vacation. Water is delivered on the soil's dryness not all at once.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
The plugs keep my plants watered for six weeks. I use several on each plant. Does not work for orchids that like to dry out between waterings. These plugs are the best and not easy to find.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
The watering cones work very well; but, the water tanks are only okay. The water tanks do not hang on just any pot, and the water evaporates quickly from the tanks.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
These water cones work very well in our houseplants. We just returned from a two-week vacation and all of our plants were flourishing with the cones.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I love this pot sitter. I ordered 2 sets to check them out. I have 3 in my large brugmansia pot and a couple in my hydrangea pot. I have not have to fill the water tank in the past two weeks. The brugmansia is actually growing new leaves! The top soil looks dry but I guess the plant gets enough water on its own. I love not splashing my hardwood floors when I had to water with the watering can and not having to think about watering anymore. I have all 6 plant sitters going to a common tank ( 1 L bottle).
They are very easy to use. I wish they were less expensive!

Comments about Plant Sitter:
We brought several pots of sage, thyme, and a geranium inside while gone for 2 weeks. Set up each pot with two of the cones, or three, based on comments from others. The water sources were large plastic dishwashing tubs, set higher than the plants, such that the feeder tube bottoms were at the bottom of the tubs, about even with the soil surface. We also primed all the tubing to avoid air pockets. Worked very well, the tubs were 90% empty when we returned and the plants all alive. The rate of water delivery depends on the height of the water source.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Easy to use, eliminates daily watering.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I have 2 window boxes, that are under the eaves of my home. When it rains I often forget to water them. I bought 6 of them as they are big window boxes. I tried one of them out earlier in the week. It works great, today I will set up the rest of them. This solves my problem of dry plants in my window boxes. I am looking forward to see how they do during the winter.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
We can travel without having to recruit family, friends, or neighbors to watch and worry about our plants that need a drink both the plants outside hanging and the plants inside hanging and otherwise. We have also used a couple of the sitters for the very large plants that reside on our deck. The beauty of these is their versitility..We love them...Ric
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I tried this product while we were gone on vacation. When I got back (after following the directions) the water tank was still full and my plants were all dried out.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I love plants, but sometimes forget to water them until I see that it's limp. This system helps a lot. And my plants are doing good. I feel like a plant pro.
I recommend it to anyone who loves plants, but are unable to maintain them without assistance.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I got this product because I had planted cat grass for my cats in a container and I was having a hard time keeping it alive. I couldn't figure out if it needed more or less water. It seemed like whatever I did, it died more. So I hit upon the idea of using the Plant Sitter because that way the plant would decide what it needed I reasoned. First of all I have to say that my plan was a success, the grass is doing well and that's really all I ask. I do have to refill it every other day, be aware that if you are using one container to water multiple plants, its not going to last long, when I go away I will probably replace the reservoir with a bucket. Also all of the tubs and spikes and container are visible and not pretty. I'm going to say Yes to the recommend but it is based on the assumption that the person is having a similar issue.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I bought the product to put in the planters at church where they can not get watered regularly. It has suceeded in keeping the containers moist and the plants are thriving and growing.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Don't have a big variety of plants. I got this as a gift and it is not useful unless it is elevated. The idea is good, but I'm not planning on putting blocks on my table for the elevation it needs.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Plant Sitter kept my potted outdoor plants thriving over a long, hot weekend. The water capacity would be insufficient for longer than 5 days, outdoors. Since I haven't tried it indoors, it's hard to say how long the water would last.

Comments about Plant Sitter:
I really needed this product while we were away. I came back to find that the same amount of water I left remained and the sensor was bone dry. So was the plant.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
You just have to keep the water below the plant sitter so that it will wick up!

Comments about Plant Sitter:
My plants always look very healthy after returning from trips. This system waters at the rate the plants need, better than humans.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
This is the only way to have perfectly blooming and full flowers in my planters. The plant sitters water as needed and offer continuous and steady water. I also add fertilizer to the water and then everything just takes care of itself.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
This is the greatest plant waterer while we are on vacation. I have ordered this product twice because of how it works for me. Thanks again and again.
Sincerely, Diane Brockman
Comments about Plant Sitter:
We could not keep plants on our deck alive when we were gone a couple weeks at a time from our vacation condo. Finally, this is the answer to the problem of what to do when you can't be there to water plants on a sunny deck.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Love them but if for going away a week you need 2 for a 10" pot. Water evaporates because cover does not stay closed.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
This is for the WATERING CONES not plant sitter:
Love them but would like the hose from the cone to the white watering tip that goes in water container to be much longer. Need to use a table to raise height of water container to use it.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
we have about 60+ of these all over house, balcony and porch; even in some hanging plants outside. Plant gets water it needs - no over, no under. Use with clear resvoirs so see needed water level. I check once a week.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Last year I used this product in outdoor containers. I think I'll use them indoors for houseplants.
I bought the cones and used a yogurt container tucked behind the pot for the watering 'resevoir'. To avoid evaporation, I ran the watering tube through a hole in the yogurt lid, into the water. The containers needed washing periodically as they were prone to mildew (or some kind of scum).
The soil in the pot stayed moist around the cone but dry elsewhere so that the plant roots were all compacted against the watering cones. More than one is needed in all but the smallest pots unless one does supplemental watering
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I use this product for my potted plants on my deck when I take short trips out of town during the hot dry summer months.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Bought these to try on some houseplants that I didn't care that much about while we went on a 3 week vacation. (The others went to a friends house.) Came back and the plants were doing great. This past winter we bought more and left all our plants at home and went away for 4 weeks. Every plant survived beautifully. Just follow the directions, make sure there is plenty of water available, and remember to scruff up the surface of the cone every now and then, and you never have to worry about watering the houseplants again. I love them.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Great help when doing summer travel. No need to ask a friend to water or come home to dead plants!
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Great item, easy to use works very well. The only problem I had was my cats liked to attack the connecting hoses and thus pulling them from the pots, then you had to follow the starting steps to set back up because you can't just stick them back in the soil unless it is immediate. But still a great item
Comments about Plant Sitter:
The plants that use the plant sitter do better on hot days.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I guess this product is a good product for taking care of plants during vacation. I have no arguement for that. Yet, my plants died anway while I was leaving to a trip for 10 days although the plants were fully equiped with this product. I felt adequate wetness of soil in the plants so I assume this was not a result from using this stuff, however. If a room is too hot due to the direct sunshine, plants die no matter what!
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I use one central, large reserve of water for several plants. Also, before using, I water the plant well. Then the plant sitter just has to maintain the moisture.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
Used for hanging pots on sun porch.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I can't keep the top closed so bugs and leaves get into it and water evaporates.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I buy more of these each year! They are invaluable as we prepare to go on vacation. We can go and come back to healthy well-watered plants! Would not want to be without them!
Comments about Plant Sitter:
We travel a lot and my many plants use to suffer because of it. Now we can enjoy our vacations knowing that all my plants are being taken care of. Hence, a much more enjoyable vacation.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I often leave town for as much as a month at a time, with the PLANT SITTER it's not a problem.
Easy to use, no moving parts - no batteries.
Simple is often better.
Great Product !!
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I love it because I can leave home for weeks at a time and know my plants are being cared for.
Comments about Plant Sitter:
I use it for regular watering of my indoor fig tree that I rooted and planted and is still maturing into a good sized bush/tree. It allows you to go away for a week and not worry about your plant receiving the water it neeeds.
But best of all, it works!
