I can't believe I've gone so many years starting seeds indoors without using capillary matting! It works wonderful keeping my little seedings watered while under the lights in my small greenhouse. I cut it into sizes that are just perfect for my needs. This is saving me a lot of time because I don't have to water all the pots individually.

This mat is easily cut to fit any shape and size you need. I used mine to line the bottom of my seed starting tray, underneath the peat pots. I love how it slowly and evenly releases the water to all the pots. The mat does not dry out to quickly, either, even with a seed starting heat mat underneath.

Comments about Capillary Matting, 3 Yards:

This is a strange concept. With the alternative of self-watering containers, this fails in comparison. There's too much work and problems that arise. It can get messy. I've used it under my patio containers. There was immediate discoloration of the mat, which is very unattractive. The one pot I set on a wooden stool, bacteria and fungus formed underneath the mat. I had to put plastic underneath it. I had used plastic underneath the others to protect the box I used to set the pot higher than the water container. I brought in other plants to see if the discoloration and pest issues are resolved. I'm still waiting to see. I couldn't really tell if the water was being used by the plant or was evaporating. I recommend buying a self-watering container.

This is the replacement wicking for self-watering whisky barrel - but it is not cut to size, so you have to measure and cut it - not exactly convenient. And there are no instructions as to size - so there is some guesswork involved, hopefully we did ok.

Comments about Capillary Matting, 3 Yards:

I used the matting as a way to get moisture up from the bottom of the terrarium where the water for the waterfall is recirculated. I have some orchids which like to have their roots in a little water and some that like it damp but not soggy. I have set up my terrarium with fir bark and the orchids are nestled in their pots in this bark. It seems to be working well, but I'll know better in several months how this is working out. The matting also acts as a barrier so the bark isn't floating in the water the waterfall is using. Thanks for having this item, It was not available in my city.

It's much easier to keep seedlings moist, but not too wet when they're sitting on wet capillary matting. Plus, you can easily determine if the tray of plants needs watering by feeling the status of the mat. If it's dry, they need watering; if it's soggy, they have too much water.

Comments about Capillary Matting, 3 Yards:

I have a 4x4 redwood flower box. I mostly use the light & aerated Square Foot Garden soil blend & in Vegas, that meant constant water loss. Missing one watering killed off some plants. So I cut the mat into strips, covering less than 1/2 the base, and dropped the ends into buckets of water on the side. It's amazing! The plants are growing faster than any or the others, and I can have my kids water them without worry! It was not quite long enough, so the end without the mat has plants that are struggling. The difference is striking. My next box will be shorter& have a slot under the walls to slide the mat through so it's prettier, but even so I am thrilled with the harvest of veggies with my self-watering raised bd

Comments about Capillary Matting, 3 Yards:

I cut rectangles of mat to fit the trays that are under the little pots in which I start seedlings. Then I don't have to water anything from the top. I water the mat and the plants water themselves from the bottom. Not having to water from the top eliminates the risk of washing away delicate seeds before germination and prevents erosion of the soil around the fragile new seedlings. Also, it is much easier to "water" the mat than to water each pot. I plan to construct a water reservoir so that I can be away for a week and use capillary action to keep the mat moist and the plants watered.

I can cut this to fit into whatever tray I've got this year; I can bleach it out the end of the season and store it for next year. It creates a "self-watering system" for my new sprouts -- I can daily put a gallon of water in the reservoir and let the capillary action work to keep my pots damp, not soggy.

Instructions were not provided with the mat, although it's pretty self-explanatory. Have to use caution if putting one end of mat in a water reservoir for on-going watering. The mat is very good at transferring water to the seed trays, and will flood them if too much water is in the reservoir.

This wicking mat works like a charm. There is advice out there that suggests using any old cotton fabric as a wick. Sure that would be free (or nearly free), but this works so much better. The easiest way I know to water seed starts.

The mat that comes with the self watering whiskey barrels is only good for one season. I loved the results I got last year and bought this to plant them again this season.

Comments about Capillary Matting, 3 Yards:

I used to use it in the greenhouse in black trays to water my young plants. Since it falls apart so quickly, I have given up using it. I have been a customer for 20+ years and have a greenhouse from you. You used to have a "green" product that worked wonderfully and held up much better. I got several seasons out of it. Please either bring it back and tell me where I can purchase it.

This makes germinating seeds as easy as it could be. It won't allow me to love my plants to death by watering too much or too often. Only the amount of water that they need gets to the potted plant or basket. It's wonderfully simple and easy to use. You can't go wrong.

Comments about Capillary Matting, 3 Yards:

After reading several other reviews, I experimented using the matting as a lining in my indoor containers and under seed starters. I cut the matting to fit the inside diameter of 3 pots. One pot I added a moisture wick as described in the instructions. In the second pot I added a cone sitter. In the third pot, I water it manually when the soil gets dry. Of these 3 pots, the first 2 pots had mold after a week from too much water. The 3rd pot I was better able to control with less frequent waterings. However, my best experiment has been with the seed starters which have stayed moist without mold. I expect that in the summer heat, my patio flowers will love to have their pots lined. I am impressed the matting's extreme absorbency and will adjust my usage accordingly.

I had just received this mat and a friend of mine was going on vacation so I lent it to her. We put it in the bathtub and put just a little water in the tub and just placed plants on top of the mat. Everything survived!

Next we are planning on cutting strips out of it and try using it as a wick. Hopefully it will work!

Comments about Capillary Matting, 3 Yards:

Using capillary matting greatly improves my seed-starting success since I no longer have to guess if I am adding too much or too little water to my seed trays. I get better germination rates and less fungal growth.
Setting up a water reservoir with capillary matting also saves the plants on my deck which get full afternoon sun. My inconsistent watering is no longer a problem.

I'm using this for the seedlings under my growlight. This mat is a fantastic way to keep the soil moist without bombarding little seedlings with water from above. You have to be careful if you're using this to make sure the drainage holes of your pot will sit directly on the mat and that the bottom 1/2" of your soil is in good contact with the drainage holes.

If, like myself, you don't always remember to water your seedlings, you will find these mats to be very useful. They soak up water then slowly release it to the bottom of your cell packs.

Comments about Capillary Matting, 3 Yards:

Gardening for me, although only part-time, is serious business, as I manage an acre+ of vegetable gardens for my religous community and a few families who are invited to covenant with us in this year-long project. Our goal is to produce at least 10,000 pounds of produce in a season. The only way we can realistically start enough seedlings for our needs and be assured of their consistent supply of water is to use English capillary matting. The wicking process of capillary matting allows a steady environment for proper growth of young plants. Our only real challenge is to keep the water resevoirs adequately filled on a regular basis. It's much more manageable to a part-timer when watering is not needed every day. Several years ago, when I was introduced to this method of watering plants, I thought I had seen the ultimate in indoor plant cultivation. I still believe it's the key principle for my success in raising thriving starter plants that do not flinch once they are transplanted into our White Mountain soil.

I used the capillary matting when starting my seedlings; the use of upsidedown styrofoam trays allowed for more water under the matting. This allowed us to be gone for several days and return to healthy plants.
