Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

I have three seed starters that we bought years ago from Gardner's Supply. Their design is much more user-friendly as the capillary mat was secured in place, and there were 4 corners where water could easily be added. This design doesn't do either of those two crucial things. In addition, the seed starters included pegboard stands that allowed the plants to be easily removed. We bought this for rooting cuttings, but didn't even receive the proper instructions with the item. The packaging was quite a surprise also as all of the pieces were simply thrown into a box - luckily nothing broke! We haven't bought anything from Gardner's Supply for a few years, and I'm not impressed with them nearly as much as I was before. Since their prices are a bit high, I expect the quality to be better than average.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

Everything I planted in this system sprouted and grew well. The problem came with getting the plants out for transplanting without damaging the roots. The chambers are hard and cannot be manipulated very well to get the entire root system out without tearing them. My experience started out great and then left me with some struggling plants after potting.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

Set it up, fill it with germination mix and water, watch your seedlings grow. What could be easier? This seems like a higher quality product than others I've seen. I think it's still a little pricey, so I'm only buying one base unit to use for the initial germination. I bought 2 of the cell trays and a roll of capillary matting to make my own bases onto which I'll transfer these trays after germination.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

I had so-so luck growing vegetables and flowers from seed last year. Peas and beans were easy, but I had mixed results starting daisies, celery, peppers and other plants from seed.

This year I am trying the Deep-Root Seedstarting System, and so far I am impressed. After only six days, some seeds are already sprouting. The soil (germinating mix) is uniformly damp and warm. This seems a perfect environment for making seeds grow.

The unit itself is solidly constructed from heavy plastic. It is also attractive and easy to use. I like that all parts of the Seedstarter are washable so when this batch of seeds is ready, I can wash and reuse this again and again.

I wanted to plant early this year-- to give my garden a healthy "jump-start" on the growing season-- rather than waiting another six weeks for the frost danger to end.

I am very happy with my purchase.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

Right now, the only flaw is that the germination starter sticks to the plastic because of the static. Made it a bit messy to get started out of the box. Using it in the house so I don't want the particles everywhere.

Meanwhile the first seeds are up an we'll see how it goes.

The cells in the 15-cell model are large enough that transplanting isn't usually necessary. The only reason we did an intermediate transplanting last year was because the plants grew so quickly and vigorously that it still was too cool to put them outside.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

This is my first attempt at starting seeds. I purchased the deep-root seed starting system and planted three heirloom peppers in each pod. A week later, every single one had germinated! I'm very pleased. The only con I can note is that GS does not give the option to purchase the dome with larger seed trays. You can buy the 28 pod and larger trays separately, but not with the dome - this was a little bit of a bummer.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

I just planted seed in my Seedstarting System this weekend, so I cannot yet speak to its effectiveness in terms of sprouting seedlings. However, I can attest to the fact that it is sturdy, stable, and attractive. The instructions are clear, and I fully anticipate I will be able to use it again and again, similar to many of the other reviewers. My fingers are crossed that I have as much success as they have had! This is my first time trying to grow from seed, so if this works for me, it probably would work for anyone.

Last year, my seed beds were underperformers and my plants were less than optimal when transferred. I decided to use the Seed Starting System and start a few weeks earlier...I didn't need to START earlier...with the new Seed Starting System, these plants will overtake me before the weather is optimal for setting them out...I will need to transfer some to larger pots BEFORE transferring them to the garden and I hope I can keep the tomatoes and peppers from producing until May...this is by far and large the BEST seed starting system I have ever used...

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

I have been starting seeds for many years using the APS system. What I like about the deep-root system is that I can clean the system more easily and thoroughly. I plan on gradually replacing my APS units as they wear out. This is my first year using the deep-root but I already have some impatiens seeds that germinated in just a few days. I'm hoping the deeper chambers will cut down on the need to transplant to larger containers.

this was great, worked well, very sturdy and I liked that the cover was tall. Haven't seen anything else like it. I would have preferred it came with a 28 cell tray so I ordered one separately. Since it turned out to come in separate pieces rather than a prepackaged set perhaps that could be an option?

Unfortunately, I was going to order another and it says not available. Hopefully that means just means for the season and it hasn't been discontinued?

I bought this kit and then also bought cowpots and started all the same veggies side by side with the same germinating mix. This kit had the seeds popping up faster than the cow pots thanks to the cover keeping moisture in. I will say though, they grew so tall so fast they are falling over. Not sure if that is good or bad!

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

I am currently starting my cabbage - both green and red, in my deep-root seed-starting system. Last year I unsuccessfully tried to start cabbage plants in the house, but they were spindly and weak plants. I tried transplanting them in the garden, but nothing ever produced. I can already see a significant difference with this system! The seeds germinated in less than a week, and are already very healthy starts, ready to transplant into larger pots after two weeks. I am very pleased with the results. The wick system is especially impressive. Plan to start tomatoes and peppers this way next year.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

This is a fine product for germinating seeds indoors. It is well constructed and the unique wick system keeps the soil at just the right moisture level. The only negative aspect is the fact the individual potting units cannot be removed separately, making transplanting to larger containers a little problematic. A better design would be for the planting units to be interconnected, but individually removable. Otherwise, a great way to get a jump on spring.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

As soon as growth begins, the instructions recommend the vents be opened or to remove the clear top completely. I've found that offsetting the top slightly back, where it is not completely closed off, allows a bit more moisture to stay with the rooting system and gives the proper amount of air and moisture for plants to thrive. They do quite well this way.

Cheap Alternative Propagation Chamber!
By Tink the GardenerVerified Reviewer from Alabama on 11/23/2009
Pros:
Durable, Sterilizable, Versatile
Describe Yourself:
Master Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

I first bought 2 of these 4 years ago for seed starting and they work great for that purpose. They are still in great shape 4 years later. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a propagation chamber, so 2 years ago I started using them for cutting propagation. Sterilize soil-less mix in a large pot by pouring in boiling water stirring and covering with lid on until it is cool. Sterilize the unit by dipping all parts in boiling water (I've had no issue with distortion of the plastic). DO NOT Use the Capillary Mat if you are propagating cuttings (they will get too wet and will fungus and/or rot). Just let the cell section sit directly on the green panel that the capillary mat usually sits on. With the lid on, there is little evaporation, so until roots grow, there is usually no watering needed. Misting under the lid once every day or two, and placing the whole thing on a seedstarting mat to keep it warm improved my success rate. This unit has a tall lid (unlike others I've tried) which is nice when growth starts. Easy, fun and very rewarding.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

I used peat pots last year, but the water evaporated right out in the arid Vegas air, I had tons of fruit flies, and lost at least 75% of my seedling. With this & the germinating mix, I was shocked to have 2" & 3" seedlings within 6 days from planting seeds! I water only every 4-5 days, the lid keeps the bugs away and the water from evaporating. I plan to get more. It's very sturdy and reusable. One bag of germinating mix filled nearly 45 of the 4" cells, I would highly recommend using their dirt mix- it's affordable and effective. All in all, I need the most user friendly system I can get, and this certainly has worked for this rookie...

All 12 Plants as of today (August 26) have their second leaf pairs and are two to three inches tall. The most amazing growth I have ever seen.

I love this product - have 5 and will buy 3 more next year. It is perfect in every way. If you take good care of it, it should last a lifetime. However, DO NOT PUT THE GREEN PARTS IN THE DISHWASHER as I did and they came out twisted. The black seed tray does fine in the dishwasher and it a great way to get them really clean.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

The durability factor was what interested me initially. I've had systems that last 2 years at best and it can be quite a drain on the budget. This will last a very long time with very little maintenance.
I have a lighted plant stand to start seedlings and bought a couple of these to try. I actually planted them with some seeds that were a couple of years old..."odds and ends"... just to see how they would do. The results were beyond my expectations. And, because of the height of the cover it accommodated the different size seedlings.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

The lid is big and is hard to store. The seedlings were easy to start. The plants look healthy, but a bit stringy. I would of rated this product 5 stars if I can figure how to remove the plants without digging the roots out of each pot. There are no separate pots, just one unit. Their other seed starting kits are much better than this system.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

This is the only GSC seed starting unit I would recommend--and I recommend it highly. It works and it holds up season after season. The only flaw--which would be inherent in any starter with a reservoir--is the inability to start seeds over a heat mat. I have successfully used just the cell unit on a heat mat with an improvised cover and then moved the unit onto the reservoir once the seeds have sprouted.

Like being able to fill up reservoir, and plants are kept evenly moist. Tomato, pepper, and kale plants are all doing well. In the future I would separate kale out to its own container, as they get "leggy" when exposed to the warm/light conditions used to grow the tomatoes and peppers.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

I bought two of these, received them, and immediately wanted another. Very well made. I had thought about getting extra trays with smaller cells, so that I could start more seeds, but I like the large cells so much that I just ordered another whole unit with fifteen cells. flowers might do well with the smaller cells, but I planted tomatos, peppers and eggplants. Every seed placed in it sprouted and they are almost big enough to transfer into the garden now. I caught the cat trying to eat my seedlings and put the cover back on. So far it looks like I will have a very productive garden this year. I had never started my garden from seeds before, only bought established plants from big home improvement store, but I like that starting from seed gives me more variety of plants to choose from. ie heirlooms!

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

If I were an experienced commercial grower, I could probably spend all day in a greenhouse making sure my seed flats got proper water and humidity, and I could get by with cheap plastic throw-away flats. However, my "greenhouse" is the size of a phonebooth (remember those?), my time is limited, and my expertise developing. Therefore, I benefit from the beautiful design of these seedstarters. The capillary mats and high humidity domes protect seedlings from over-and under-watering, and the deep cells aid in strong root development. And they're DURABLE-- more so than any competing product I've seen.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

I've used Jiffy seed starting trays, and never will again. I like the sturdiness of this system, and the deep cells are great too. It makes it really easy to get select seedlings out to transplant into peat pots while I'm still waiting for others to germinate. I used a teaspoon to get my seedlings out (not the recommended method by the way). This system will definitely stand the test of time.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

Used it to start my earliest tomato plants and a few of my larger perennials ... so far so good...easy to water and keeps moisture very well...nice vents on the pastic dome so I did not have to remove as soon as seedlings appeared as with some other "solid domes" .. especially good if you have a flat where different seedlings emerge at different times. The seedlings I began in this kit are significantly larger than others started in a conventional (smaller cell) kit.

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

I bought 2 deep root seed starting systems and have had 100% success with them. Every seed germinated, quickly, and has continued to thrive on. I bought extra cells to rotate crops. The only two things I would change in the design of this product is to add a lip or handle on the lid to make it removeable with one hand, and expand the base of the lid in a way so as to not drag the seedlings down with it as the lid is being placed on. Be careful with that. Enjoy the contentment of seedling success with this system. Gardening is such a joy.

I just purchased this product and have not used it yet but was very impressed with the quality of the item. I am trying to purchase items that are stout enough to reuse year after year. Not only will that save me money but it is my attempt to "go green." I will not buy flimsy products that are good for only one season. After I have used this product, I will submit another review on how it worked for me. Thanks, GS for a nicely made product that I am sure will work wonderfully. If so, I will be ordering more. Jan

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

I live in an area that has two full growing seasons. Because of limited inside space and sunlight I try to start seedlings outside on my patio table.

For the past several months, I have matched wits with a blue jay who eats the vegetable seeds shortly after I plant them. He drops by, digs them up, and then kicks over the trays.

With the Deep-root Seed-Starting System, I've now outsmarted him. He can stand and look but not touch. Ha-ha-ha!

Comments about Deep-Root Seedstarting System:

My seedlings grown in the Deep-root System grew at least twice as fast as my seedlings grown in peat pots and other containers. They did not become tall and leggy but were bushy, healthy transplants.

Used to start pepper seeds and was able to leave them in these till it was time to put them in the garden. The plants were actually 10" high and looked like they were growing in the garden.
