Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

I can at this time emphasize that potatoe plants "propel" their growth with this product. Today I planted seeds in the cowpots, using this. I shall assume it and the cowpots will give us fantastic plants "smiling" at us. Therefore, I cannot rate it for vegetables, seedlings, herbs or flowers yet. I'd appreciate an opportunity to send a supplemental report in a few weeks after the progress has been displayed in the cowpots and subsequently in the garden plot. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

First time I used this soil

texture was not fine at all!
By Uli from New York on 4/18/2011
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

I just used this over the weekend for seeds and it was heavy and lumpy -- filled with pebbles and twigs and other obstacles for tiny seedlings. Not at all what I was expecting, but I went ahead and used it because I couldn't run out and get something different. Will update my rating if it turns out this is not a problem, but this mix definitely did not have the light, airy quality you want in a seed-starter. More like top soil!

Pros:
It really works, My seedlings thrived, Simple To Use
Best Uses:
Seedstarting
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

Most of the seed starting mixes I found in the garden centers were not organic and had questionable content. I never felt confident that I should use them to grow food. When I tried this mix, my seedlings were strong and healthy. The inclusion of peat in the mix eliminates damping off. A big plus. I had such success that I had enough plants to share with all of my neighbors and gardening friends.

Pros:
Effective, Simple To Use
Best Uses:
Flowers, Seedstarting, Tomatoes, Vegetables
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

Used this starting seed for peppers and tomatoes - got 100% germination!! Used a competitor's mix for flowers and got <20% germination. Started again with flowers in your mix and got 80% germination. Seemed to allow for more drainage than other seedstarting mix and roots definitely were stronger when I transplanted the vegetables. I'm sold on this!

Best Uses:
Flowers, Seedstarting

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

I bought the 2 ft./2 tier garden starter kit, which I am very pleased with. Part of the kit included four bags of the organic seed starting mix. Upon opening one bag, then the rest, there was mold growing on the top of 3 out of 4 bags. I alerted Gardeners and they sent 3 replacement bags. No problem. When I really started the sowing process I was very disappointed with the quality of the mix. It had sticks, what looked like chunks of mulch and good sized rocks. I had to sift every bag. Caused me ALOT of extra work. Never again.

Not very great
By capsaicin addictVerified Purchaser from Sioux Falls, SD on 3/28/2011
Cons:
Drys out quickly, Ineffective, Uncomposted twigs etc, Whole pieces of manure
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

This seed starting mix is not a good product. There is too much nitrogen in here from umcomposted manure. The bag had mold growing on the sides of the bag when I received it, and stunk like it came straight from the cow pasture. I had to take my seedlings out of this mix. Too many twigs and branches in this also.

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

I used this soil mix because it is organic, unfortunately, starting seeds inside was difficult because the soils weight is very heavy. I ended up with mold on the outside of my cowpots because it held water too well. I would suggest using this as an outdoor seed starting mix directly in the garden so you dont have to baby you new seedlings.

In the past I have been very impressed with the fine texture of this product. I have not found anything similar in my locale. Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

I know rocks and sticks are organic, but in a seed starting mix they are a pain in the ____. I had to go through and pick out the fairly large debris before I could plant the seeds. It should have been sifted better. Also, it just looked like peat moss, nothing really special. I double checked the bag to see if I got the right stuff.

A Little on the Heavy Side
By KitVerified Purchaser from Cambridge, MA on 5/7/2010
Pros:
Simple To Use
Best Uses:
Seedstarting, Vegetables

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

I started using this last year instead of your previous germinating mix, but I find it makes a heavier medium and seems occasionally to discourage the seeds from germinating. When they do, everything is fine. I think next year I may use the earlier kind for the top layer, as being easier for the sprouts to penetrate on the way up. As a sidelight, I always use newspaper pots made with your potmaker, my all-time favorite among your products.

Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

Gardeners "normal" seed starting mix is very fine texture throughout and produces great results. Unfortunately the organic mix contained not only sticks and twigs (not a big deal) but some actual stones, larger than nasturtium seeds (or kidney beans, if you prefer.)

Little more than an annoyance (pulled by hand as I went) but I do feel like some seedlings failed or were delayed sprouting due to the density of the mix.

Much as I like to purchase organic when possible I'll either be going back to your non-organic seedstarting mix or buying organic from another source.

I use this for seed starting but there were quite a few small twigs and it contained large clods of mix. Also the bag size was smaller than I expected, there's no way that I can fill 4-24 APS like it states in the product details.

Last February I was hesitant to use the new organic starting mix, but decided to try it; however, after comparing my first batch of tomato plants started in organic germinating mix with those started in the regular, I became a believer--and now will not use anything else! Organic starter is great! I have gardened for over 50 years and tout this as the best! Send more bags!

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

This is the first season that I stored seeds from last years garden...and the first year for me to try a hand at starting plants from seeds. I had my doubts that I could actually grow my plants from seed, however, I was amazed as to how easy it actually was. My plants are sturdy and ready to go into the garden!

By Dances with PlantsVerified Purchaser from Brighton, MI on 5/5/2009
Pros:
Lightweight
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

The soil was rich and light. Almost all of my seeds came up. There were a few small twigs, but overall this was one of the best packaged soils I have used.

The only downside was that the bag it came in fell apart at the seam and I lost some of the soil in transport. The broken seam also made it a bit messy to use and store. That is the only reason I did not give this product five stars.

Both bags I got are full of twigs, clods of peat, large perlite pieces. Has to be screened to use for seed starting, the purpose for which it is advertised. Did I get a bad batch, or is quality slipping?

Pros:
Easy To Use, Lightweight
Cons:
Expensive
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

The first thing I noticed is how chunky it is--too many twigs and clumps. It does hold water nicely and I LOVE that it's organic. Only a third of my tomato seeds came up, but they were seeds from last year so that may be part of the problem. I will give this seedstarting mix another try next year.

Looks promising
By SabrinaVerified Purchaser from Loveland, OH on 4/19/2009
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

The bags were a little smaller than I expected, but I think it's just packaged that way to minimize empty space; it looks like each bag will fill at least two trays.

The texture is not as fine as other seed-starting mixes that I have used in the past, but I liked the fact that it did not feel extremely dry; you can tell that there's organic matter there. I think it will hold moisture well. I won't know for sure what I think of it until I see how the seeds do, but at this point, I'm optimistic that it will be a good medium.

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

Used in conjunction with Deep-root starting system...worked well except with some finer seeds as this mixture is a bit coarse and contained some larger elements that don't do well with very fine seed like coleus and some helichrysum...but really good for larger seeds.

Best Uses:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

I was so excited to have found an organic seedstarting mix. I got my APS unit ready to fill with the soil. To my dismay there were many large pieces (looked liked slivers of wood) which definitely do not belong in a seedstarting tray. I had to take all of the dirt out and sift it prior to using it in the cells.

Comments about Organic Seedstarting Mix:

This is my 2nd year of using the Organic Mix for starting flowers & vegetable plants using APS Units under fluorescent lights. Prior to last year I used your regular Germination-mix with good success. Difference between the 2:---the Organic Mix stays "wetter" but the condition does not seem to promote damping-off of the fragile seedlings. Also, the Organic Mix really shines in Root Development! OUTSTANDING!
Only NEGATIVE comment on the Organic Mix is: Still a LOT of TRASH in the new 6-qt. bags! Out of 6 qts. there is one FULL quart of sticks, stones, etc. (TOO MUCH!) Have to SCREEN this Mix in order to use it in the APS Units. NEVER had to do this with the regular Germ.-Mix. It is a pain in the neck to have to do this each time and should NOT be necessary.
