i found it easy to assemble and move around.
it took 3 bags of compost and 3 bags of top
soil to fill it up to 8 inches. i can add
more if needed. i will use it for radishes,
as i have a bacteria in my soil that turns
radishes grey or black and renders them
inedible.

Comments about Grow Beds:

As a "senior," this is my first veggie garden. We live in a mobile home park in the Mid-Hudson Valley of NY. The soil here, at least, is incompatible with producing a thriving garden, and there's little space. I also have a chronic pain illness. After my partner did the heavy work of assembling (which is easy!) and adding the soil to the 3'x3' bed, I planted the seedlings. Raised beds are really the way to go to produce a good harvest in a small space. I'll need to get another one next spring to add more variety!

Comments about Grow Beds:

the 3x6 raised bed would have been perfect if it has just been a larger version of the 3x3 bed. It is however a 3x3 'extension' to the 3x3 bed and requires a drill instead of being 'no tools required' as the 3x3 bed is.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I got the 3 x 3 and the 3x 6 grow beds and am very happy with them. I was surprised that you needed to drill holes for the 3 x 6 - that should be stated somewhere in the description. That was impossible for me to do since I had no access to electricity where I was placing it. I put it together without the plate installed and it seems to be holding together fine. Other than that, assembly was easy, they look good, they hold a lot of plants - love them and will add more next year.

Struggled with a vegetable garden for years and my wife suggested the raised bed. Purchased three and filled them with organic top soil. Plants tripled in size in three weeks. Hands down, the best vegetable garden I have ever started. Growing carrots and beets for the first time. I have purchased some very good products from Gardeners Supply over the years - this is the best!

Comments about Grow Beds:

I purchased two a few years ago and now have 4. I like the depth this product offers unlike others which also makes it easier to grow in a more compact manner. Also, the 3 x 3's are much easier to place in your yard, more versatile than the larger units.
I would like to see some sort of bottom screen added to this product as the soil can erode from underneath if not placed on a perfectly flat piece of land.

Comments about Grow Beds:

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was because the 3x6 kit is actually a 3x3 kit with the extension kit added. In order to secure the 2 kits together one has to drill holes in the plastic to attach a plastic joining plate. We got it done with the help of a neighbour with a drill and it seems very sturdy, but I had not appreciated that this would be necessary from the online description.

This is a fantastic raised bed. My husband assembled this in just a few minutes with my toddler watching. I loved that it was portable (before soil) so we could find the perfect spot. We did not buy the soil sold on this site. I planted 6 indeterminite tomato plants and used the cage and towers suggested. The tomatoes are really growing!!! I couldn't be happier...

Comments about Grow Beds:

I purchased this raised bed to separate my zucchinis and other viney plants from my tomato and pepper garden. It was very easy to assemble and it holds much more soil than I anticipated (8 cubic feet). I can tell it will hold up well over time because of the recycled plastic construction. The only con is that the sides bow out slightly with the weight of the soil, but that's simply cosmetic and doesn't affect its use in any way. Overall this was a good buy.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I bought several of these when I realized it would cost too much to put down several inches of good garden soil over my entire plot. I agree that the joints seem a little flimsy; but they do the job. However, these aren't heavy duty, so don't put too much stress on them. Someone mentioned that these were flexible enough to alter the square shape (think parallelogram). I followed this advice and was able to fit them better into my plot. Do be aware that if you bend too far, the joint covers can pop off. I don't know yet if that will allow any soil to spill out of the corners. Yeah, these aren't as attractive as wooden raised beds (and I didn't feel like springing for the new blue ones); but they get the job done and I planted some annuals along the outer sides to compensate.

Comments about Grow Beds:

This is my first season with this product. My husband put the 2 of them together, without a problem, in the sunniest spot for veggies - I also added 2 cucumber trellises to shade the lettuce and hold the cukes, zucchini and eggplants. However the side are bulging so I'm concerned about longevity. Time will tell if I'm a happy customer.

By Easy GrannaVerified Purchaser from CT Berkshires on 5/12/2011
Pros:
Attractive Design, Drains Well, Easy to assemble
Best Uses:

Comments about Grow Beds:

I'm using the grow bed with the polypropylene liner to keep out invasive tree roots, the bane of my garden. But I can't comment much on it (and the 3x3 one with the liner) because it is the very beginning of the growing season here and I don't have any results to report.
But it was easy enough to assemble (2 people make it easier) and I can say that even with heavy rain the liner did not allow the soil to get sodden -- so the drainage appears to be good. I'm using my own soil mix so that will be factored into the results.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I am a renter, and have been container vegetable and herb gardening in the summers for the past few years. However, I've been wanting to do raised beds, but didn't want to invest in a lot of materials and labor, only to leave it behind when I move away. I bought a 3x3' bed, and I loved it so much that I bought another a couple of weeks later! They are so easy to assemble, and I am so excited at how well my plants are growing. In one I have three tomato plants, carrot seeds, New Mexico chile, 3 bell peppers, and calendula, and in the other, I have two types of pole beans, amaranth, and echinacea. I love that I will be able to use these for years, and bring them with me wherever I move after I leave my current rental home. I am using them with the liners sold for them, so there's no weeding, either! I hope to have a great harvest, and I'll be buying more next year!

Comments about Grow Beds:

The directions for assembly are, in my opinion, backwards as regards the "entension" aspect of making a 3 x 6 bed out of what is esentially 2 3 x 3 beds. The sequence of steps should be refined so that the assembly could be accomplished in a much shorter time. Bt the time I had gotten to the third (of 3) "extended" beds I had figured out a much simpler method.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I needed an extra set of hands to put these together as the 3 x 6 size is awkward... I also could not figure out how to attach the connector plates... there are not any pre-drilled holes in which to screw in the screws.... other than that, I purchased 3 and they seem like they will be around for a long time and are by far the best deal around... I checked out prices everywhere online and in stores... and these were the best price for the money and durablility!

I purchased 3 mini raised beds because we have poor soil, limited space, and want to grow more edibles. The beds fit into my flower garden very well, and are a good blend with the surrounding perennials. So far lettuces, radishes, shallots and strawberries are looking good. I am amazed at how much they actually hold. Wish I had space for more.

Comments about Grow Beds:

This is the fourth 3 x 6 ft box we've purchased. Initially bought 3 several years ago, and just recently purchased an additional one to increase our vegetable crop. We use them in our backyard to grow vegetables. Since we have terrible dirt, having above ground boxes is an ideal way to be able to use store bought plus helps keep your beds tidy. We've grown vegetables in these plastic boxes both from seed and plant. They have held up well, although we've noticed some bowing of the pieces when overfilled with dirt. You also need a tool to finalize putting it together.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I bought this specifically to create a strawberry bed and, for that purpose, it works great. I was surprised to find that the 3 x 6 bed consists of two 3 x 3 beds that you have to attach using a drill. These are extremely utilitarian and, in the future, I would get them in periwinkle or cedar. But the price was right and they'll do the job just fine.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I bought two grow beds, the 3 X 3 and the mini 3 X 18". Both were very easy to put together and install. They seem sturdy and weather resistant. There is a slight amount of play at the corners that allows the beds to fit into angled places. When the beds are filled with damp soil, the 3 foot long sides bow out slightly, which is not a problem for me, but might make the beds unsuitable for someone who wants to do square foot gardening precisely, The black color heats the soil too much in my hot climate. The insect protection and vertical gardening accessories sold by GSC fit the 3 X 3 bed, but not the mini grow bed.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I purchased six of these 6 years ago ([...]) and they have survived through 2 home moves and 2 rearrangements. I have used them in a variety of designs with a couple of 3x6 configurations. I wish they had the extension kits years ago because they do bow without a brace support (but not horribly). So, this year I will be ordering the extension kits and ordering a bunch of mini grow beds for my berries. I also plan on moving my boxes, yet again, to another spot. I love these. And they've been a great value compared to any other material. I wish they had slightly deeper ones for more permanent berry bush placement. Maybe I'll be making a lip of composite wood to create more height. Either way, I saved a lot of money last summer by growing my own veggies and this summer I plan on intensively planting to sell at a farmer's market. Wish me luck!

Comments about Grow Beds:

I bought two of these beds to replace one wooden bed which had fallen apart, and to increase my garden area. It seems to be the perfect depth for most plants. I can't yet speak to longevity, but it seems well made. One thing I did not realize, when I purchased the bed, was that I was going to need a drill (I purchased the longer bed which combines two lengths of the smaller) to put it together. Fortunately I have both a drill, and awesome drilling skills. One thing, that I think would make this product even better: make indentations or notches every foot. These beds are perfect for square foot gardening, and such notches would make planting even easier.

Comments about Grow Beds:

As a new widow I found I no longer needed a large garden. I was able to put these very close to the house which helps with detering deer and other animals from dining on my vegetables. They are neat, durable, easy to move. Alot less work when it comes to any weeds, harvesting and keeping the area neat. Last year I had green beans, tomatoes, basil, eggplant in two 3X3 grow boxes. I use the flexible hoops and row cover withit so I can get an early start. The hoops fit perfectly in them. The only issue I have with the grow boxes is that the connecting brackets break very easly, the hook like part is not as durable as it should be. The photo below shows how well these items work together. Click on the photo to elarge it.

Best Uses:
Outdoor Plants, Square foot gardening
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Grow Beds:

My beds are used for intensive gardening. I currently have 4 of the 3'x3' beds. I use them for corn, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries, and much more. They overwinter beautifully and hold up to a weed trimmer. The corner covers can pop off. They are easy to replace, and are only cosmetic. They don't effect the integrity of the bed.

I placed all four of my beds on thick grass full of weeds. I only needed to put down a few layers of newspaper and cover it with my soil mix. The newspaper helped suppress, and eventually kill, the grass and weeds. Then I assume it decomposed and allowed roots to penetrate the native soil. I've had two of my beds for 3 years. The other two for 2 years, and I have never had a problem with grass or weeds in the beds.

There is slight bowing of the sides once soil is placed in the bed. My concern would be that their 3'x6' would bow even farther which would worry me. I haven't owned the 3x6 so.....

Overall this is an excellent product for those that want an attractive, less expensive option for a raised bed. If I had some spare cash I would love to have another one....or two.

Cons:
Corners broke apart
Best Uses:
Outdoor Plants
Describe Yourself:

Comments about Grow Beds:

I bought four 3'sq. beds. One for each of my kids (now age 4 & 5), and two for me to garden. I found them great for the kids to be able to access them and plant, weed, decorate. They drain well and are easy to maintain. Unfortunately, the corners are held together with plastic pins that slide through holes in the boards. Some of the holes broke apart right away, and some over time. We are going on our third season with these beds, and each spring, more corners are broken.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I purchased 2 6'Foot and 1 3"Foot grow bed to place in my landscaping for planting vegetables. They were very easy to assemble and I have planted a fall garden with collards, swiss chard and califlower. I planted onions and garlic around the outside with Mums that make the beds look attractive. The quality of the product is very good and I am anxious to see how they winter.

We had a rain of several days with the total for one day of over 4" and they drained real well. The plants are growing well and I should be eating from the plants in a week or so.

Not easy to assemble in 3 x 6 size
By MaryVerified Purchaser from Portland, Maine on 7/20/2010
Pros:
Holding Capacity, Weather Resistant
Cons:
Difficult To Assemble
Best Uses:
Outdoor Plants
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener

Comments about Grow Beds:

For the 3 x 6 size, you get 2 3 x 3 beds with a panel to screw into the sides to connect them for the 6' measurement. So you have to mark the spots for the screws, then drill holes. In case you've never had the pleasure of drilling a hole in this hard polyresin, it's not easy. Once you've drilled the holes, you put the panel in place and secure it with the screws. The rest of the assembly went without incident, but I was not prepared for this time & energy using first step. Be nice if they made 6' sides or at least made the connection of 2 3' panels easier.

Comments about Grow Beds:

We've put in 4 of these, and all 4 are doing well. We like the fact that the content is recycled material and that it's fairly easy to assemble. Attractive too. Only problem was with one we left out in the sun before filling with soil. The sides went slightly concave as a result. Still, no big deal. Doesn't detract from the beautiful results in happy, healthy vegetables.

Current Versions substandard
By romadVerified Reviewer from Oroville, California People's Republic on 7/9/2010
Pros:
Weather Resistant
Cons:
Difficult To Assemble, Flimsy, Leaks soil
Best Uses:
Outdoor Plants
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Grow Beds:

We bought the original version a few years ago and the corner joints are virtually one piece after assembly. However, the quality has gone way down hill. Instead of the large solid connecting points of the original's design, the current versions use small, flimsy connections with an even flimsier decorative cover. The original design could also be used at other connecting angles, whereas the current design doesn't work if the angles aren't exactly 90 degrees (and even then it doesn't work well). However, the current design will work if you take time to modify it with short sections of re-bar and duct tape. I would only recommend this product in its current version with full disclosure of the shortcomings.

Bottomline:

Please bring back the original design, Gardeners.

Oh, joining 2 3'x3' beds into 1 3'x9'bed, gives you an additional 9 sq. ft.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I bought this bed a couple of years ago but never had the time or place to assemble, so this is my first year of use and I will definitely buy at least one more. The drilling necessary was a bit of a shock - I actually had to go and buy a drill and accessories. Otherwise, assembly was easy, even for a petite older lady. The bed looks great and has produced some very edible hot peppers and tomatoes already.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I've had 2 growbeds for over 3 years, and they hold up very well here in Utah, in our sunny hot summers and snowy winters. I got them for raised-bed vegetable plots and they work very well. Recently I had a low brick edging put in, so I have raised beds around the perimeter of my yard - so I converted the growbeds to edging along our fences, to protect the fenceposts from rot. A very versatile product, well worth the money.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I bought two 3x6 and two 3x3 beds to set up my first raised bed garden. I don't think black plastic is the most attractive option, but I like that they will last and won't be subject to rot or termites. Because we have lots of gophers around, I drilled holes around the bottom edges and used plastic ties to attach 1/2" hardware cloth to the bottoms. I found the beds fairly easy to assemble, though, as others have pointed out, the 3x6's require some drilling. The beds bow out a bit when filled, but not enough to concern me. The corner covers are a bit tricky, and one broke when I tried to attach it.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I use one 6x3 bed for vegetables and one 3x3 bed for blueberries. Can amend soil in one box for a variety. For both boxes together it took 27 bags of 1 cubic soil. How nice though to not hit rock when planting, to work with good soil, to place the beds for ideal growing conditions, under the roof eaves which protects them from hail damage. And best of all, it puts the fun back in gardening, saves time and a lot of work for those who are too busy or the elderly, people who love gardening and miss home grown food but for whatever reason can't or don't have a big garden. I am very pleased.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I bought grow beds this year to begin a small square foot garden. I've been very pleased with them! They weren't too hard to put together. I do suggest that you have someone help you put them together and lay the pieces flat when you begin to assemble it.

Once assembled, you may think the grow beds are flimsy, but once you fill them with soil, they work beautifully. My garden looks fantastic and best of all, the grow beds have been able to withstand the blistering heat in my area.

I would certainly purchase these again!

3 X 6 requires assembly
By MKVerified Reviewer from Portland, Maine on 6/21/2010
Pros:
Holding Capacity, Weather Resistant
Cons:
Difficult To Assemble
Best Uses:
Outdoor Plants
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener

Comments about Grow Beds:

The 3 x 6 bed is a 3 x 3 bed with 2 extenders. So you have to connect 2 3' pieces by drilling holes and bolting a connector panel into place to get the 6' sides. I am taking a break from doing this, because my drill was not charged and drilling through this plastic stuff is not easy. Once I get the sides assembled, I think the remainder of set-up will be easy, because the corners slip into place with rods through them and then snap-on (I hope) corners. I wish they'd designed it with rods and snap-on pieces for the sides, too. Or even better, designed 6' sides.

Great Size-Not Easy to Assemble
By LolaVerified Purchaser from Buffalo, NY on 6/18/2010
Pros:

Cons:
Breaks easily in Moving, Difficult To Assemble
Best Uses:
Foot Square Gardening, Outdoor Plants
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Grow Beds:

I'm sure the 3 foot by 3 foot works best. The 6 foot by 3 foot is MUCH harder to assemble-requires drilling holes and clamping and elevation on saw horses and a support-too hard to assemble in place and the ends then break easily when moved. If the side pieces of the 6 foot by 3 foot were easier to assemble and take apart, then it would be much better.

I can't say much more about the product because it does exactly what I needed it for. It protects my house from water getting to it so I can grow part shade and part sun garden plants. I'm pleased with this product so far. It went together easily and seems fairly sturdy (even though 2 sides are bowing slightly). It holds a lot more than I thought it would. I have lettuce, spinach, radishes, green onions and herbs in a 3x3 bed and they are thriving.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I have several of these including the 3x6 foot version which I don't recommend at all since the sides bend easily with the weight of the dirt or potting soil within. Utilitarian but not pretty though the price is pretty reasonable. I have very rocky soil so I use these and containers to grow things.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I gave it 4 stars because I believe it's too expensive for what it is: four large pieces of plastic. I checked "difficult to assemble" because the corner pegs came pre-installed, making it impossible to assemble unless I banged out the pegs with a hammer. I had to wait several days to get ahold of an "expert advisor" at Gardener's to get permission to do this. I didn't want to be held responsible in case I broke anything by hammering. (As it turned out, the pegs came out easily.)

My yard has only 2-4 inches of soil over solid rock so I bought two of these raised garden beds to try to grow a wider variety of vegetables. They went together in seconds, look great, and now have healthy crops of carrots, onions, lettuce and cucumbers growing in them. I got a tall insect cover for one and a low cover for the other, and they slip on easily. I highly recommend these products!

Comments about Grow Beds:

I love this product, and am using it as an herb garden and also for lettuce. I bought the net cover that fits over the box, and wish that it was a bit more sturdy, as in keeping out pesky intruders. I had a rabbit that chewed holes in the sides to get at the goodies inside, and eventually taped the sides with duct tape, consequently I have now ordered a new net. I would like the net to be more substantial on the sides, more pest proof! Otherwise anyone that sees it in my garden loves it!

Comments about Grow Beds:

I have horrible clay soil, so using a raised bed to grow vegetables is the only solution. This bed was pretty easy to assemble, except I would recommend pre-drilled holes where you add extensions. I like that it's tough material that can stand up to the weather. The sides do bow out slightly from the weight of the soil, but not so much as to affect the efficiency of the product. Overall, I would buy this again.

I have used these grow beds for a few years now. They hold up well, some times they do need a little extra support for the sides as the compost can cause the sides to bow out. They survive the harsh winters with snow and ice as I do not take them down and on a few occasions they sometimes get plowed into and snow and ice gets thrown on them. I add one or two each year.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I have two 3'x3' beds like this one and I love them. Everything grows really well in them -- so far I grew kale, lettuce, peas, beans, and garlic with excellent results. So I decided to get an additional, larger bed. What was not clear from the description in the catalog, that this bed comes with an extension kit, and to assemble it I needed an electrical drill. This was not specified in the catalog, and I don't have a drill and have no need to buy it. So I assembled the bed the best I could without extension panels and using two wooden poles in place of two missing plastic pegs. It worked, although I had to prop up longer side panels in the middle so they wouldn't bulge out.

Just bought these this season, so I'd have to get back to you all next year for a better review. So far, for the price, this is good stuff. Be careful when you're filing it though because my 3x9 setup bowed a bit in the center and messed up my eye lines and with all those cubic yards in there - there's no fixing that bow easily. Nice and deep enough, you can make them to fit most any space and grow, grow, grow!

Comments about Grow Beds:

I am a lifelong gardener and decided to go to grow beds this year because I thought that they would be easier to weed. I like the height of the box and they were easy to assemble, but I was expecting a thicker plastic...something more like a board than a sheet. Once filled with dirt, the sides bowed out. The end cap that covers the corner has already popped off a couple of times. I would probably go with the galvanized or solid wood beds if I were doing it again.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I bought the Square Foot Gardening book and was so excited I couldn't wait. I live in a condo now and there is very limited space, let alone a space that has both sunshine and dirt.
The reviews on here were convincing; I liked the material, and the price affordable. I liked that the material is somewhat flexible as the area is at a bit of an angle, so it allowed me to 'shape' it just a little whereas a wooden one would not.
It was easy to put together but I do agree that it sometimes pooches out a bit or the corners come away some, but I'm so excited and determined that I don't really care much.
I used wooden dowels held together by wire that I wrapped around and laid it on top for my 'grid'. It will suffice.
Already little greenies are poking through the soil so we'll see what happens!

Comments about Grow Beds:

So excited about finally having a real vegetable garden. Our soil is TERRIBLE, so my gardening friends told me raised beds were the way to go. I bought 2 of the 3x6 grow beds and actually linked them together in an L shape. (An extra metal bar connector would have come in handy, but we just drove in a few stakes on the outside to provide some extra support.) There is nothing stunningly attractive about the look of the black sides, but neither is it an eyesore. Once the plants have filled in, it should look great. I think the beds are a great value for the price.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I've had these for at least 5 years. They're still standing in the same great shape as originally installed. I use them for my vegetable garden. I have, all together, 4 raised beds (1-3x6; 2-3x3; 1-18"x36") made from this product. If you are a DIY homeowner, then it doesn't get any easier than this! Take it from a single, senior, homeowner... I live in a suburban neighborhood with feral cat colonies and growing vegetables was a challenge trying to prevent them from digging and destroying the crops. Doing this and covering them with 2 sheets of fabric mulch keeps them out of the patches and keeps my veggies clean, roots hydrated and soil warm. People are amazed at how much I grow. I raise eggplants, 3 kinds of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, salad & beet greens and, of course, basil.

There's plenty of room for small plants like lettuces, and I'll see how well it works for Swiss chard and spinach. It's easy to water--I know right where the water is going and it isn't wasted. I'm using this in conjuction with the mesh cover (another review) and it seems to be keeping out the rabbits and deer, especially good news as the plants are very young and tender.

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Grow Beds:

This small 3' x 3' garden bed is the basis for my current vegetable garden, with six beds -- two 18' long, three 15' long, and one 12' long. Four of these are double deep too. These garden beds just need some side support -- 3' metal stakes outside each joint and (for double deep beds) a stake in between the joints to give more side support. Additionally, I add some metal flashing inside each joint and inside each corner to minimize soil leakage. This makes a very viable rasied bed garden on more than a mini-scale. Having purchased 33 of the beds so far, I anticipate doing more when I make all beds double deep. Yes, it's a lot of work at first, and the sides do bend a little, but it sure makes great capacity and much less bending down over the double deep raised beds.

I have looked all over, including the FarmTek catalog (nursery/greenhouse edition) and have never been able to find a similar product. If you want to go raised bed, this is the way to do it. Inexpensive, does not rot out like wood, good size, good height, easy to move if you want to re-arrange your raised bed configuration, warms up in spring .... just a great, easy way to create raised beds. I will say the 3' x 6' seems a little flimsy, but some 3' x 3' boxes of mine are now on probably their 5th year, and seem to be doing great. I buy a couple each year, I think I have about 9 now and I love them.

Cons:

Comments about Grow Beds:

The grow bed seems to be very sound. I have no doubt that it will drain well and help provide a healthy growing environment for my plants. However, nothing in the description prepared me for the fact that the 6x3 bed is simply two 3x3 beds fastened together by with screws and nuts. The fact that the sides required holes to be drilled was not mentioned. At this point I am undecided as to whether or not I would recommend this product to a friend.

Seeds are already coming up in my new raised beds, which are so easy to work in. I had no trouble setting them up by myself. I thought black plastic might be slightly tacky, but no. I actually like the efficient look of them. The sides bow just slightly with the weight of the soil. Setting the panels in the ground a couple inches before filling gives support to prevent any more bowing than that.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I just finished putting this together, and it couldn't have been easier. The most difficult part was drilling the holes for the extension plates. This is some heavy plastic. But overall, it was a breeze. Can't wait to get started. For those who are concerned about removing the sod before filling, this really isn't necessary unless you are adding plants that root very deep. My solution will be to use black planters from my local garden center that I have cut the bottoms from to set on top of the soil, which will add another 8-12 inches to the growing depth. Hope this helps.

I have placed my small 3'x 3' grow bed on our back patio and am thrilled with the results so far. My plants look heathly and it is easy to tend. Looking forward to a good harvest and will expand to a 3'x 6' next year if this proves to be a success.

Comments about Grow Beds:

In an area with hard packed, clay soil, these raised beds provide a perfect solution. They are attractive, durable (we have had a few for more than 6 years with no signs of deterioration) and great for vegetable and cutting gardens. We use them for both annuals and for perennial herbs like sage, thyme and chives.

This is so perfect. Everthing is neat and organized. I bought two with the extensions and followed the garden suggestions that was offered. They are very easy to assemble. You will need a drill only if you use the extensions. Very minor drilling. I am female and do not use power tools ever. This was mine and my 15 year olds sons first time drilling and it went great. Easy to follow directions. Love Love Love theses beds. Will expand next year with more.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I love my new small 3x3 raised bed! I recently moved from the country to a small house in town and last year grew a couple tomato plants in 5 gallon buckets. No more! I had the spot all cleared and as soon as my bed arrived, I easily put it together and filled it with a mix of soil and manure. Right now I have only herbs growing, but there's plenty of space for tomatoes and peppers which should be ready to add next month. It's just the right size for a small yard or limited space anywhere.

Comments about Grow Beds:

I have five of these beds and just ordered some more. I live in the mountains of Arizona and we have no soil, just rock. These are great. I'm small so could set them up by myself. I've moved them around from year to year. I've grown huge tomatoes and even larger cosmos in them. They do get a bit hot in our Arizona summers, so I've come up with a method for keeping them cooler - just set them next to one another and put a board on the outside allowing a chimney effect. The trick is to put really good soil in them. The more amendment the better - and plant close to keep the soil cool and moist.

Comments about Grow Beds:

The only thing I would change about the grow beds is the depth of planting soil. We used to use 1"x12" timbers for grow beds 35 years ago when the Mittleider Method and Square Foot Gardening came along. I still think the extra 2 inches of soil gives way more to the plants than not, especially if you have difficult soil beneath. All in all, I would use grow beds over in-ground anytime.

We have a small backyard with poor soil and no real place to dig because of underground pipes and wire conduits. So we bought the grow bed and filled it with top soil. Comments about Grow Beds:

This is one of the simplest ways I have found to add perennial beds, strawberries, and veggies to my unused spaces and on areas of my lawn that the grass never thrived. I just laid down good quality landscapers paper, assembled the grow bed, and filled with good quality garden soil, hummus, compost and it was ready for planting! Wonderful! I am wondering how it will hold up to my harsh Colorado winters, as it seems a little flimsy, but this growing season is I am looking forward to a bountiful harvest - so long as the hail, winds and other weather conditions cooperate! Really, these little beds are super easy to assemble, work just about anywhere & look great - the hardest work is carting the soil in to fill them! I find them very useful.

Comments about Grow Beds:

We have an enclosed kitchen garden with raised beds in which we practice square foot gardening. When we wanted to add beds this year, we decided to try this product instead of building our own. The cost was not much more than the cost of the wood for building the original beds and these went together in a fraction of the time. We used steel rebar to hold the pieces together and anchor them to the ground, rather than using the short plastic pins that come with the kit. They aren't very attractive and I wouldn't use them for landscaping, but they're just fine for the garden. They have a tendency to bow when filled with dirt, especially if they're larger than 3x3. Grew cabbage and broccoli in them in the fall and have shallots, garlic and overwintering onions doing well in them now.

This grow bed looks great! I am using it to grow veggies this summer and it will be nice to not have to worry about any soil issues in my yard. I can just put the type of soil I want in it and go. Also because it's bottom-less I can plant things in it that will need to grow deeper roots and not worry about them growing into the bottom.
