I used this in Scotland where it really got cold to save my seedlings. I used it againts pests on fruit bushes. I used it to cover againts strong wind. You can peg it down, put a brick on it, soil on it, it washes off. Sun goes through, rain goes through and best of all, nothing else goes through. Great stuff. I have raved about it so long in the USA it is now available here.

Also bought the double hoops. My husband thought I was nuts when I bought this. Had to plant my puny seedlings, but we were expecting heavy rain. I attached the fabric to the hoops with clothespins. It worked great! The wind and rain did not damage my plants, and the fabric stayed put. Hope it will keep them from scorching in the hot sun.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

This is an OK procuct. The problem was that my hoops from Gardener's are quite old and rough. The fabric wore through where it met the hoops. The info that came with the fabric mentioned a quilt blanket but I did not see it in the catalog. Overall I am very pleased with most of the products from Gardener's Supply.

I covered my beans and zucchini seedlings with this a few days after planting. When I removed the covers both were dead. Water did not get through the fabric and probably not enough sun either. I used a hose and noticed the water rolling right off the fabric. It was pretty cold the night before so that may have contributed to the result, too..

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

What I like about this fabric is it's strength and size--the 12' wide size! It really covered my 4' wide bed with tall hoops very easily. It is strong, and keeps the light and warmth in and bugs out. It is enabling me to get an earlier start on some of the vegetables that I'd normally put out a bit later. It seems sturdy enough to last for a number of years and storing it is not too much of a problem, I just roll it up. Please consider making the summerweight blanket in a 12' width too--I would find many uses for that one as well.

just put this up yesterday. Too short on sides for super hoops when placed length of bed. I question the ability of this cover to protect plants from the cold. I put plastic cover over the material until it warms a bit more. I will have to turn the material and make multiple cuts to give appropriate coverage on sides for super hoops.

Oregon set a record this March - 30 days out of 31 it rained - This durable row cover protected my plants, both on the ground and in raised beds. Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

It was very unusual for us to get the low temperature we were getting. I was really glad that I had gotten the fabric to cover my dwarf citrus trees as well as my hollyhocks which had sprung up early. It is simple to use and to just fold back up, put back into the bag and put away until needed again. I plan to use it when my seedlings go out into the garden to give them a chance to adjust to the warmer temp we are now having. I'm really glad I found it and would purchase it again when needed.

I put this fabric over my hooped, raised bed garden. It was the perfect size as my garden is 3' x 15' with high hoops. I wanted to protect my garden from the hot Florida sun. I affixed the fabric to the garden in June and went away for a few weeks. When I came back, the fabric was disintegrating - it wasn't even that hot out. I would have thought it could withstand rain and heat, but apparently not. I had to remove all of it shortly thereafter as it just kept disintegrating.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

In the Texas Hill Country our nights can go to the 20s (sometimes lower) and the Garden Fabric is the perfect covering. I purchase the large piece and cut it in lengths suitable for large pot plants. It is easily weighed down with a rock or two on a windy night. Its protective qualities are amazing. It does not weigh the plants down. I have older pieces which are probably three years old. Use of garden fabric has saved many a plant! Also use it to cover patio beds with great success.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

I bought around 9 of these so far to use this winter. I did an experiment and tried to grow a huge garden with pvc greenhouse over them covered with 2 layer thick of this material. Well just one layer is suppose to give you protection down to 28 degrees which is a lie. I had two layers plus 2 heaters in the greehouse and everything still died from freezing weather here In south Georgia. If it cannot protect crops here in south Georgia then you cannot expect this junk to protect anywhere especially in the north. It does not protect to 28 degrees because I have a digital degree meter in the greenhouse that showed just above 28 degrees as did the weather advisories and plants still died. Do not waste your time and money on this fabric if your wanting to protect anything under 32 degrees because it won't protect them and you will be very disappointed especially if you bought $200 or more of this garbage as i did.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

Last year's heavy freeze to 17 degrees four mornings in a row wiped out my row of pygmy date palms. A friend recommended Gardener's Supply and I bought all purpose cloth (meant to buy Garden Quilt but this worked fine). It arrived just in time for weather in the 20s this year and the palms are fine. I left it on for a couple of weeks and the plants were fine. I do prefer the Garden Quilt as it's a bit heavier and protects down to a few degrees lower but we rarely get such cold temps in Northern California.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

I have used this product for nearly 10 years. It is great for protection from cold and wind during early part of season. The previous version of this product lasted me about 3 years. The new "more durable" version does not last a single season. Wind seems to just rip it up.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

In addition to all the qualities listed, it also acts as an effective mulch, keeping newly seeded areas from drying out and retaining moisture in our raised beds. The maurading squirrels and other pests either don't see the plants or are unable to get at them. We relied on it when we lived and gardened in Zone 3 and still do here in the scorching sun of Zone 6.

Garden quilt is very effective in preventing frost damage. It is a must for our high altitude garden. Because we live in New Mexico and have a lot of sunshine even when it's cold, it warms the earth and the earth stays warm through the cold nights. It's saved plants in temperatures as cold as 16 above.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

I have many very large hostas and ordered this garden fabric to protect them from late Spring frosts/freeze. The last frost was 1 day before they arrived and I have not had to use them. The frost doesn't kill hostas, but they look bad the rest of the season. If the fabric protects them well, I'll be ordering more but I won't know until Fall.

I have used a similar product for years but had been unable to find it in my local retail outlets. To protect my vegetable garden and give it a good start, I use pvc pipe as supports and lay the fabric over the entire garden and secure it by laying small bricks on the edges. It has held up to some very strong winds. I learned about this method on the Victory Garden years ago.

I used the all-purpose garden fabric this spring to cover up my tomatoes and peppers when the nights got below 45 degrees. They did a great job and kept the plants alive in not so the fabric off in the morning, they retain a lot of condensation on the under side, but it does keep the moisture in. It is very light weight, but easy to put an earth staple in to keep it anchored. Great product.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

I planted a month earlier than I usually do, and used the fabric to cover my peppers, eggplant, and tomato plants for the next six weeks until the nighttime temperatures were consistently above 55. It says you can keep it on until the daytime temperatures reach 80 degrees. You water right through it, and it keeps the plants warm and gives them enough light. I used to cover with plastic at night, and remove it during the day which led to damaged plants because of all of the handling. This product saved me that hassle.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

Denver's weather is a huge challenge, 80 one day and 29 the next with wind thrown in to make it interesting. I used the all purpose garden fabric for the first time this year and will use it from now on. I used it on my mixed lettuce patch, sprouting beets, and a long row of chard. I realized how good it is because I was a bit short of fabric for all of my areas and 3 chard plants were left uncovered. After our chilly spring, the covered plants are 3 times larger than the 3 that were uncovered. I used the fabric in conjunction with the hoops, which are also wonderful. Great product!

The fabric is exactly what we were looking for. The only problem we encountered was when the plants grew taller and we had to increase the height of the cold frame, the winds where we live grabbed the fabric and blew it around. I don't think there was any other installation that we could have used at that height and not encountered this particular problem. Otherwise it is perfect for our use.

I've used this on nights when frost was predicted and nothing was harmed. I purchased it to throw over the pop-up covers for my raised beds before the pop-up frost covers appeared in the catlog. It is easy to cut a piece large enough to pin to the ground over the pop-up, or to clip it to the pop-up. It is far less expensive than buying another pop-up for the same purpose.

We bought the fabric to protect a bed of Joseph's Coat (Alternanthera ficoicea) in our Central Florida landscape. The plant is hardy down only to 34 F and we were facing a severe cold snap. Placed it on a PVC frame over the bed. We had about 10 days of night-time temperatures down to the mid-20s for more than three hours. There was a lot of damage to the foliage, but the plants seem to have survived. Won't know for sure for another six weeks.

I shade my lettuces by covering a cucumber trellis set over the lettuces with the fabric. (I don't have cukes, I just use the trellis for support.) On hot, sunny days I put up the fabric and secure w/clothes pins. On cool, cloudy days, I fold the fabric down. Easy. Since it's not that cold yet, I only have one side of the trellis covered, which allows air circulation.

Cons: my peas "stick" to the fabric - but I just have to be careful when pulling off the fabric.

I seeded and covered a 3X3 plant box in February. Through snow, heavy storms, and a cool spring the plants were protected. The cover let in rain. The plant staples held it in place. This is something every gardener should keep on hand. We are using it as a canopy for our lettuce in the hot summer months and our lettuce is thriving. I used the garden fabric over hoops to jumpstart my cool-weather crops this season. Today I used it to wrap around my tomato cages to [hopefully] protect my newly-planted tomatoes from marauding deer, groundhogs and rabbits until I can erect netting. The fabric allows rain and sun to enter, yet protects from late frosts. Easy to use.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

I liked the feel of the fabric; I've had some row covers in the past that were too stiff or too flimsy. This was soft while still seeming durable.

I have 4x4' raised beds, and cut this piece up so that I could use it on the specific beds I wanted to cover. I didn't use hoops this year, and was apprehensive about the cover lying directly on the seedlings (cabbage and cauliflower), but it does not appear to weigh heavily on them. As the plants have grown, they seem to lift the cloth effortlessly.

The covers are supposed to provide frost protection down to 28 degrees, but we had a couple nights that were colder than that, and the plants under the cover survived without any problem.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

I plant all my cold weather and tomato plants about a month earlier when using row covers. I have raised beds - warm the earth for two weeks with black plastic - remove plastic - plant - cover with row cover on black plastic tube hoops (buy a roll of black plastic tubing at your local home building supplier and cut around 5 or 6' long, push ends into ground or over 2' long rod hammered into ground), hold cover on with pvc clips (can only find on-line). Leave on broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage all season - no green worms. Remove from tomatoes, peppers, eggplant when blossoms appear. Live in high wind area so am lining with nylon net from fabric store this year - to extend cover life. (Typically for me covers only last one year because of high wind.) Should let sun and rain through okay. Hope this experiment works! Love using the covers.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

I tried this product for the first time this year with the intention of extending my garden harvest into the cooler season. First of all it held up during a recent, fairly heavy windstorm. It just took a few tools to stabilize it over my plants. I used a couple of metal rods and some bricks. The results are amazing. In fact, just last night I picked some beet greens for dinner. Mind you this is the middle of December in Pennsylvania !!!!I still have lettuce, greens and cilantro that are growing beautifully under the cover. I intend to continue the experiment and also to use the cover in very early spring. Its a fabulous product and I highly recommend it.

I use these to cover plants in my yard and on my back porch (I have 7 large ones which cover large areas of many plants at a time). They are superb and have saved my plants for years. One year I covered a large Strobilanthes plant and when I took the cover off after several weeks, the plant had beautiful flowers on it! Same thing happened with my Mahonia plant! Guess the warmth of the cover generated the blooms!

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

Me country garden and city garden have a common feature -- they are hilltop and exposed to extremes. I have used this for 15 years to moderate those extremes. I put it over early plantings of seeds and seedlings. It stays until the plants are strong. it will also moderate extreme hot sun if you are trying to prolong lettuces and spring plantings. Come August, it goes on the fall plantings and will stay. We just turn back, harvest and recover.

Why doesn't everyone use it?

We used the all purpose garden fabric at the near end of the season as we were going on a trip for over a week. Pros:

Cons:
Packaging
Best Uses:
Garden
Describe Yourself:
Practical
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

The lightweight fabric has literally been a lifesaver for my plants that are a gourmet attraction for Japanese beetles (the bag traps did't sufficiently control them, and every day a new generation appeared to replace the ones eliminated by spraying)! The beetles don't even come around any more to the areas where I've wrapped.

Suggestion (not necessarily part of the review): It would be helpful to have some kind of appropriate tape to attach cut pieces of fabric to each other--I had to resort to duct tape. Also, the lightweight is folded up into a package, so it's like trying to manage a bedsheet when you undo it. It would be much handier in a roll.

I use this garden fabric during the summer over beans just sown or over squash. Once plants are mature enough, they don't require so much protection from bug damage.
The fabric holds up better with support and it does tend to snag a bit on the corners of raised beds. Other than that, it really is the best.

Comments about All-Purpose Garden Fabric:

I am a novice gardener. I rented my first community plot and decided to plant a few seeds in addition to potted plants. I used the fabric to create floating row covers to protect the delicate seedlings from bugs, heavy rain, chilly nights, and wind. It was a little tricky to unravel; I'm not sure how it was rolled up, but it was difficult to get it unraveled so I could cut it to the size needed for my seedlings. However, it worked perfectly! My seedlings grew very strong beneath the fabric and I was eventually able to remove it once the plants were strong enough on their own. I highly recommend it!
