Located in: Gardening, Vegetable Gardening, Season-Extending

For avid vegetable gardeners, winter lasts too long and fall frosts come too early. These new cold frame components let you stretch your growing season and harvest more healthy, home-grown produce. Designed to fit over our 71-1/2" L x 57-1/4" W (sold separately) with 27 square feet of growing space, the 3-season covers are supported by a sturdy 36-1/2" high enameled steel frame that fits right into the raised bed corners. In spring and fall, use the frame with the insulating greenhouse cover. Made of woven polyethylene, it has a large access door on each side and two roll-up gable vents, all with 2-way zippers. Insect netting covers the doors and vents, and zips open for accessibility.

During warm weather, replace the greenhouse cover with the optional woven polypropylene Shade Cover, sold separately. It protects plants from the stress of excess sun and heat and attaches securely to the frame with hook and loop tabs. We also offer the Frame and Shade Cover individually for warm climate gardens.

  • Lengthen the growing season and increase yields

This is the second one of these we have purchased. We live in a typically windy area and the outside cover does not wear well. Small holes and rips do occur frequently. For the price it's OK, but don't look for more than 2 seasons of longevity.

This is the first year I've ever been successful at extending the season for lettuce and other cool weather vegetables. It worked fantastic! I use it year round to shade these plants in the summer and to keep deer and bunnies out of the garden. Some of the plastic snaps cracked and broke[...]. Holds up well in the wind. Love this product so much I brought a second one this year.

The cold frame is perfect for my needs. I begin using it early in the spring for lettuce, then later I use it for my tomato plants and it protects them until the frost date is past. I also use it in the late fall to extend my lettuce growing season. It gives me several extra months of growing season each year in my garden.

don't know why the cover I received does not fit over the raised bed I received at the same time. So I have had to cut it on all four sides and enlarge with duct tape.
I want to order a new one to replace this one, but don't know whether this problem has been solved.
Basically I love this cold frame. Just wish the plastic cover fitted.

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

The first year it worked very well. At the end of the second year, the plastic cover was fatigued from the sun and all fell out in little 1/4 inch squares. The rip-stop skeleton remained on the frame, though. You will need to replace the cold frame cover every 2 years. I'm in VT, so not the sun belt. I can imagine it lasts less time in southern areas. Had I written this when I first bought it, I would have said it was great, but it doesn't last more than 2 seasons, and it should. The frame is okay.

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

Works well to extend growing season on both ends, Spring and Fall. Do be careful opening and closing zipper, as it is a wee bit flimsy. I have not had any real trouble so far, but that is because I have heeded the advice I read in previous reviews and I zip very carefully.
Also, I used longer ground anchors to secure the cold frame. The short anchors provided are not sufficient to withstand high winds.

I live in the mountains of North Carolina, and the garden tent (as I call it) lets me grow arugula, parsley, chard, and kale throughout our very cold winters as well as (with the shade cover) lettuce and the aforementioned plants throughout the very hot summer. I love the way it looks sitting in the garden. I use it when giving directions to my house: It's the house with the little green tent in the front garden. I recently gave one to my son and his wife, who live in New Hampshire.

We really love the cold frame. Have given as gifts to 3 others. We were able to pick fresh, bug free, clean lettuce for Thanksgiving. Which is quite an accomplishment as we live in Colorado and there was snow on the ground. The one and only flaw, the "greenhouse" cover is prone to shredding. Gardners Supply replaced one for free, and I will buy another at the beginning of the next season.

I assembled my first greenhouse with my wife's aid in 20 minutes. It has withstood some big winds through the winter (properly staked) and keeps my crop frost free. Ordered a second one and I now have a nice winter crop. I would recommend two people for the frame assembly to make it easier. Looking forward to an early start with this greenhouse. PS also keeps the rabbits out!!!

spring inside tubes are meant to hold frame pieces together but about 50% of the clips were out of position. once I straightened them out I found that they were weakened. Lucky for man's best friend "duct tape." I put small pieces on each connection. Just enough to keep the frame together. Once I had it together I wrapped the tape around each connection and this kept the frame together. At this point I could carry it around with one hand and do anything I wanted with it.

I had never tried fall planting until I used the shade cover for this coldframe. It's too hot to plant spring veggies in the Colorado summer sun but this year, I have a bountiful supply of spinach, radishes, lettuce and broccoli growing in two of the shaded coldframes. It's only drawback is the flimsy frame but with enough anchors to hold it down, that's not a big issue.

We put it on a tarp on our southfacing deck for
the transplanted seedlings that are still not ready for the garden. With a lightbulb for the nights that drop close to freezing, they thrive until they can safely go into the main garden. The unit is also great over the raised beds early in the year and to extend our short growing season.

    OK, but not great
By wVerified Purchaser from maine on 5/22/2010
    Pros:
    Accurate Instructions
    Cons:
    Small In Size
    Primary use:
    Personal

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

The cold frame cover is a little too small to fit the frame and companion raised bed. It's easy enough to use but I'm wondering how long it will last if I have to stretch it tight to fit over the frame. I'd really appreciate a design change that would allow me to unzip the insect mesh from the top. That way I could open it a little to allow bees in for pollination but wouldn't be giving access to the chipmunks, squirrels and other critters.

Some of the stitching left long threads that can get caught in the zipper. I'll have to tie them off then cut them so I don't shred them when opening or closing the insect mesh. It would have been nice if the people making this part had been a little more careful. (If they had been more careful the size might have been correct too.)

As others have written, hopefully Gardener's Supply gets their act together and makes the cover available for purchase as a separate part without the frame. What are the chances that someone at GS reads these comments and replies to let us know that they have created a part number for the greenhouse cover without frame?

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

I put all the my started plants outside in it to harden off. It worked great. The weather was cold enough that if the plants had been planted in the garden they would have been lost. With this frame I was able to keep them from being frosted. I wish they offered the greenhouse cover seperate, like I purchased the frame. I didn't have the money for both at the same time. Iam really happy with it. Thanks

This thing is great in theory but poor in reality. The frame does not stay together nor can the structure tolerate more than a light breeze. The problem seems to be from the flaps allowing wind underneath. The entire structure is lifted and carried away. The stakes are not substantial enough to stay in the ground and I now have the entire structure modified with weights and boards to keep the structure intact. Skip this and buy a solid and rigid cold frame if you are a serious gardener. I have lost an entire flat due to the problems above.

I live in a high wind area (58 mph regularly) at usda zone 5 on the edge of the Great Basin. I've tried several cold frames in the past, (they're in pieces-the pieces I could find-in the barn). A dozen pavers on the bottom skirting held this cold frame in place. Snow, sleet and high winds were no threat to tender plants inside. I'm very pleased.

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

In short: Nice try, but it's a significant step backward from the previous version.

This cold frame is an updated version of the cold frame I used successfully for three years, until the plastic started to disintegrate. Two major changes were made in this new version:
    1) The roof used to be flattened at the peak, now it just rises to an angled peak, and
    2) The large side flaps used to be Velcroed down, now they zip.

Both of these changes are nice tries at fixing flaws in the previous design, but neither works well.

The problem with the Velcro used to be that it would sometimes come loose in high wind, something the zippers fix. The problem with the zippers is that they tend to jam. I used to just take a couple of seconds to smooth the Velcro down, but now I have to spend a lot more time fighting with the zippers, and one of them refuses to close the last 6 inches no matter what. It would have been nice to still have the Velcro there as well, to close things up quickly and easily. And of course the zippers need to be higher quality.

The problem with the old roof being flattened at the top was that it would fill with water and sag. The problem with the new roof is that it increases the wind profile, which caused my new cold frame to blow loose of the pegs twice. Part of the problem is that the metal grommets the pegs are supposed to hold on to are very flimsy, and several of them just tore loose when the cold frame blew free. Also, the pegs have 90-degree bends to form the part that holds on; when the tent pulls on them, they just tend to rotate in the direction of the pull, and the grommets slip off. The tent pegs should have 135-degree bends (I'm not sure if the old ones did; I have pegs like that, but don't know if they came with the old cold frame).

Worst of all, though, is that the frame is now very flimsy at the peak. When the cold frame blew loose, it flopped over on its side, and the metal at the peak bent and weakened so that the two sides of the frame were flattened against each other. I straightened it back out, but the structural strength is gone; the tent is now less stable, and I doubt the metal will last much longer before snapping. I'd be astonished if this cold frame lasted as long as the previous one. (I would just go back to using the old one if I could just buy a new plastic cover for it, but they're no longer made.)

If you ask me, this is a classic Made in China product; the two lessons learned from the previous version were applied in the cheapest possible way, resulting in a worse product (but no doubt one that was cheaper to make).

I'm concerned that the zippers will not stand up to use. They are not heavy duty. When received, sections of them had separated. I had no trouble working the zipper head over the separated teeth and though now they seem to work fine, I'm concerned about the long term.

This was easy to install and I was surprised by the space it provides. The cover goes on easily and seems sturdy enough for my purposes. Its too early for any seeds to come up yet, but the interior is staying nice and warm in our cooler higher elevation climate. I like the venting options at each end. I only hesitate at this point to give it a 5 star rating because the zippers on the large side openings might eventually become a problem. I debated a long time about making this purchase, and now that I have, overall I'm very happy I did!

I purchased this product to extend the season for growing vegetables in New England. Right now I'm experimenting with uses...for example, I have one greenhouse cover over a 5x6 raised bed of assorted seeds, to see which ones are happy to germinate early. The other is over my strawberries, plus there's room for flats of broccoli and lettuce seedlings under cover to start hardening them off for planting in my main raised beds. I think the prospect of simplifying the hardening off process excites me almost as much as the hope we'll have lettuce and kale after our first frost in the fall!

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

This greenhouse is sized to fit over a raised bed. I use it as a stand alone greenhouse for seedlings. The interior zipper for the bug excluding fabric is very poorly sewn. It will catch at the slightest lack of care in zipping. The whole cover does not fit the frame tightly making a lot of slip when opening and closing. I know from experience that the plastic cover will last only a year or two as the sun degrades the cover plastic quickly.. Even with the criticism, I like to use this for starting seedlings and also for growing eggplants. Until it rips, the bug excluder fabric keeps flea beetles off my eggplants.

I am using the cold frame for the second season. Last spring I used it to harden off plants and hold frost sensitive plants until the threat of frost had passed. This year I purchased the cedar raised bed that the cold frame fits and am using it to extend the growing season for greens. I'm using the cold frame cover now to protect the seedlings from frost. When the weather heats up I'll switch to the shade cover so lettuce, ect., won't bolt. It's working great so far.

This is well designed and so useful. It protects young starts from weather AND CATS but it also extends the season. We got 63" of snow this winter. I not only recommend it I am going to buy another before I can't find it.

Buyer be prepared – if you're lucky, you might get two seasons out of the "green house" cover. The green house cover for this cold frame is plastic laminated mesh. By middle of the middle of the second season of use, the plastic was so deteriorated that it fell off leaving only the mesh behind. Needless to say, by the end of the season our cover was well ventilated. The cover's demise eliminated any shot at a late growing season. And, as a bonus, thousands of little plastic squares littered our grow box. The cold frame and cover is a great idea conceptually, but it sure would be nice if the cover lasted more than a year and a half. Fix the cover (or at least offer replacements without having to buy another cold frame) and you've got a nice product.

Used previous model in high desert and the 2 units lasted about 3 years in severe sun and winter. New model has openings on both sides, and this solved the only complaint I had with working with plants. Plastic connections to frame break after 2 years, but electric tape holds it together OK after that. When base weighed down by dirt & bricks, no wind will blow them over or affect growth of plants.

This little 'greenhouse' is the most amazing piece of garden equipment I own (perhaps, excepting my Mantis tiller:-)

I grew and harvested lettuce, mesclun and cos, and picked a huge bowl of it to serve on New Year's Day! We had temps of 15 degrees for several days prior, and still my little covered paradise kept my lettuces happy. I am sure I would still be picking lettuce, but for the fact that it's all been harvested! When I first got the unit, I excitedly planted lettuce and packets of old seeds I wasn't sure would grow, even though it was late in September. They not only grew, but survived brilliantly! I was so sold on this unit that I bought another one for my sister for Christmas.

The photo on this item doesn't do it justice: There are FOUR zippered openings on it, making it easy to work inside it and reach in to harvest. The zippered net inside layer is awesome for keeping out stray weed seeds and bugs. I've had almost NO weeds or bugs inside mine.

One note of caution: don't build your raised bed by their dimensions. Wait until you get the unit and fit it accordingly. We used their dimensions the first time, and the top now has to be stretched to cover. Second bed we built for my sister was so much easier. We set up the unit, put the boards together for the bed, filled it with soil mix and plopped on the tent cover.

We like the versatility of the green house, to be able to move it around. This is our 2nd time buying & we bought 2. In summer/winter we cover lettuce & seedlings.
It lasts about 2 year-round gardens - the plastic conectors & top get brittle.
When packaged, better care should be taken to insure cover is at bottom, so when opening you don't cut. We had one on top & 1 on bottom :( .

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

This greenhouse was easy to set up but after just one winter and summer season, the polyethelene cover is breaking down. Admittedly, our summers get hot here in Texas but, during this time, it was in shade. Also, don't see an option to replace just this covering without reordering the entire frame. Based on this, probably would not recommend it although it has other good features.

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

I like the coldframe and covers, but have lost them twice to wind. The ground clips are totally ineffective and even using wood around the bottom, the poly cover flew off in wind and luckily a neighbor found it and returned it. This needs to be attached to the frame, it should have some kind of inner ties. I am going to try large clamps next, but beware, it likes to travel!

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

Having just set this item up today, I do not have long-term use feedback, but I can tell you that there are a couple of things I wish I had known before the unit arrived: 1) the measurements of your raised bed should be LESS than they state in the description. I made my raised bed to their dimensions and it is too big. Cut them down by at least two inches per dimension, and it will fit perfectly. 2) There are TWO zippered openings, both netted. That's AWESOME!! Much easier to access inside.

Also, I was very confused about what I was ordering. The sale says "without cover", but I thought that referred to the "shade" cover. Actually, the frame is just the bones. NO outside covering material. When I came around to suspecting this, I called and a very agreeable lady who answered the phone allowed me to upgrade to a unit with covering (not the "Shade" one), for a sale price, even though they were out of stock and it wasn't listed on sale. Whole thing, frame and zippered cover ran about $71.00. I think that's a great deal.

Overall, I expect this unit to last and justify the price.

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

I would recommend this with reservations. I was generally pretty pleased with this cold frame when I set it up, but as the summer wore on...and I DO leave it on all summer because of the deer and rabbits...I would like to be able to tie up the screen layer as well as the outer layer. The biggest disappointment, however, is the fact that the screen is so fragile that it rips VERY easily. Just zipping the screen closed has caused several rips and one time when I caught the screen with my scissors (round tipped) it also ripped. I was hoping to be able to use this for a couple of years and because it's kind of cumbersome to set up and take down annually, I was hoping to leave it up all winter. I'm not sure now, however, if it can withstand the winter, or whether it will be viable next summer. All in all I was reasonably happy with this. For the money and the effort of set up, however, I wish it were a little sturdier. It did it's job this summer. We'll have to see about next summer...

It has grown lettuce and other greens that don't like heat all summer in 80-90 degree weather. Just a marvelous little "greenhouse." We have a greenhouse, but the greens get too hot in the big house in summer--but not in the little frame greenhouse. We just love it and will probably order more of them next year.

I put several layers of newspaper on the ground to fit the dimensions of the raised bed. Then I filled the raised bed with a combination of peat moss, vermiculite and blended composts. After winding a 50 ft. soaker hose through it, planting several varieties of herbs and installing the shade cover over the frame, I have a perfect herb garden - easy to maintain and our dog has not been able to dig it up!

Easy to set up and to open/close to access plants. I live in a windy area and during some peak gusts (50mph), the entire "greenhouse" was lifted up and carried about 15 feet. No damage to the product though. I needed to put some blocks around the edges (in addition to stakes provided), to keep rabbits out. One persistent beast snuck in and ate the first round of seedlings.

This coldframe was exactly what I needed. I have had a small 4 x 8 green house in the past, BUT this is SUPERIOR BY FAR for hardening off plants that were started indoors. This coldframe is just perfect for getting plants ajusted to the outdoor environment, yet still offers protection from severe cold snaps. The best part is that when the plants are set out, this can be put away safely in the barn for next spring. No more worries about strong winter storm damage.

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

Need better instructions for using with a raised bed. If you build your own, there is no way to accurately figure out what exact size the raised bed should be. And there is no mention of whether the legs of the frame should be inside or outside of the raised bed. We had to guess, remeasured many times and still the bed ended up bigger than the cold frame and it should have been smaller. It caused a problem that could have been easily avoided by providing the inside dim of the cold frame area. Not everyone can afford to buy your raised bed after purchasing the cold frame and shade cloth.

This is the first year either my husband or I ever tried a garden, aside from growing a few herbs in pots. We built a small raised-bed (using the raised bed corners from Gardeners.com) sizing it to fit the cold frame. We covered our new garden with the frame & cover, and planted our little seedlings. When we planted in mid-April (unthinkable in Michigan!) our parents all told us the plants would never survive. But the little "greenhouse" kept them safe, and the plants all flourished under its protection. Our peppers are already 6" tall, celery 4" tall, and the rest are growing strong... while our parents don't even have anything in the ground yet! :) This was very easy to use, even by novices such as we, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants an early start on their garden.

I am using this on my deck as a holding frame for those plants I purchased before it was safe to plant them in the garden; as a hardening off frame for those seedlings started indoors; and as a transition "home" for those indoor plants that benefit from the summer months outdoors -- in this case, orchids. My home lot is small, but I am looking around to see where I might install it for summer salad production!

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

I've only got two problems with my frame and cover. First, if one end of a pole is out of round, you'll never get the pole connected to another one. I ended up using a mallet to hammer one end into another because it wasn't round. Second, I have two of these frames and covers and I'm using one with one of Gardener Supply's raised beds. The problem is that, if you put the frame legs on the corner stakes of the bed, there's no good way to tie down the cover with the little stakes that came with it. If you try to set the frame legs on the outside of the bed, then the cover barely stretches around it all; mine has developed little tears in a few places at the corner seams. Overall, though, I love my frames and covers. One got blown off in high winds and the frame just broke apart without any damage to itself or the cover, unlike what might have happened to a wooden frame.

I was hoping the plastic/fabric was a little stronger. I ripped it in a few places just setting it up when putting in the stakes. They ripped next to almost every gromit that the stake goes in. On the other hand, I am anxious to get some tomatoes inside it, and hope they survive any possible cold spell. I would be supprised if this can last more than 2 or 3 years of gardening.

I looked at a number of cold frames, and this one really does the job. It was easy to assemble and looks like it will last a long time, as the materials aren't at all flimsy.

It's easy to access from both sides, and you can easily adjust the temperature by opening or closing the side windows and front and back flaps. I was able to fit all my seedlings for a small urban farm inside.

I have it set on gravel and held down with bricks. We had some wind gusts of over 40 mph, and the cold frame came through undamaged, protecting all my starts.

This product has allowed us to start planting veggies this April in New Hampshire. We are very pleased about that. It has dropped down below freezing and yet the tender crops are fine inside. My only complaint is that the inside zippers tend to get off track sometimes. Otherwise I highly recommend this product

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

You would think that the plastic would fit around cold frame it's built to cover. You would be wrong. The cover is just a little too tight, and therefore must be stretched to get over the metal corners of the raised bed. Those corners are sharp, and pierce the cheesy plastic cover. Definitely made in China. I'd bet fifty bucks there's someone out there with a cover that's way too big.

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

This is a great product. I plant lettuce and spinach in late fall, then put the cold frame and cover over the patch. The lettuce and spinach germinate, then winter over. In early spring I am eating my first crop (April 2 as I write this, and I have romaine to eat, in zone 5. It's just enough to keep everything going through bitter Colorado cold nights). My last one blew away in a 110-mph windstorm; normally, it is pretty wind resistant. Be sure to use your rustiest garden staples to hold it down. The aluminum ones that come with it are only good to about 50 mph. Rusty stakes are good up to about 80-90 mph and after that, lean some heavy lumber scraps against the peak.

I am currently borrowing a cold frame and cover from a friend who took pity on me. It is old and the cover is a little holey but it still keeps the heavy snow off the crops and keeps the wind from drying them out. I will be buying a new one in the fall.

The zippered doors are very convenient and the roof vents help a lot on a warm early spring day.

The cold frame has allowed me to get my seedlings outdoors so much earlier this year!! It is very roomy and very easy to assemble and move. I can see that it will get a lot of use in my garden.

I can foresee a time when perhaps the coldframe cover will need replacing (a longgggg time from now), but I don't see that you sell cover-only. Maybe you should consider that.

I live in the south and bought this cold frame to see if I can grow winter greens, lettuce, spinach, cabbage etc. Will add to comment later, if all grows successfully. I think the frame is very sturdy. The "greenouse" cover, quite strong too, although it will have to be handled with care. I noted another subscriber said cover was not very strong and did not hold up well. This did not deter me from buying it. I'll not judge until I see how it lasts throughout winter. Also saw, that you could not buy a replacement cover. If one was available, I would buy as I think the frame is going to be sturdy enough to last a long time so please, Gardener's Supply, see if you can secure replacement "Greenhouse" covers. I think that would be a huge plus for the sale of these cold frames. So far I'm well pleased with it!

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

I waited to review this product until the strong Missouri winds arrived. It is holding up very well due to the metal frame. I have used and lost ones made from PVC piping when they blew away! I have planted winter vegetables 3 weeks ago from seed and they are coming out already. The greenhouse keeps the soil temperature stable and moist. I put it together without reading the directions mainly because of the ease of assembly and the directions read like someone not fluent in the English language.

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

The coldframe is easy to put together until the very end. Looks like a misprint in the instructions or the legs were misidentified with a different sticker of another letter. Most likely the latter. It's a little flimsy, so I had to tape the areas where a piece fit into another. The spring hinges that make the pieces "lock" together were useless. However, the frame fits the raised cedar bed that it was made for, so that in itself is good. The cover is good quality and fits the frame nicely.

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

This is a great item to extend the growing season, I am growing late lettuce in one of mine (using the greenhouse cover), and I am using another for my asparagus patch (using the netting cover) to keep out the dreaded asparagus beetle.

They are fairly easy to put together although the second one I ordered had piping ends that were misshapen and required a little work to make them fit together. The main problem I have found is with the greenhouse cover, the outer flap closes with two zippers, the zipper on the flap extends below that on the cover which makes them quite difficult to use. Although Gardener's Supply replaced one of the covers for me they are all made the same way, this is a design flaw which will likely reduce the life of the cover significantly.

Despite the above caveats this is a great item which no-one else seems to carry, I wish there was a similar item to put on tomatoes to keep squirrels and chipmunks off, I think it would be a great seller.

I set up this cold frame last Feb. As of now, in August, the zipper has seperated from the mesh, the plastic cover is ripping and deteriorating (just falling apart). Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

I have tried other styles of hot houses and covers and am completely happy with this one. Holds down well in high wind blasts and maintanes warmth.
Grows great lettuce and salad greens, not to mention how easy it was to start my bedding plants.

In Maine, I started my greens in early March and had spinach ready when I was ready to plant lettuce without a cover. I plan to replant in late summer to extend my salads into early winter.

Due to the large number of insects that lay their larva in the vegetables and attack the leaves it is imperative to have cover for things like cucumbers and cabbage. Some tomatoes also may benefit.

Comments about Cold Frame Covers and Frame:

Last year I had a problem with my lettuce wilting and my cabbage being eaten by some misterious creature.

This year my lettuce is still going strong and my cabbage is looking good. This is a great way to keep your tender greens growing longer, and faster.
