Just one day of hot summer sun can affect the lush, moist flavor of homegrown lettuce, making it bitter; a few days of hot sun will make lettuce bolt to seed, ruining it for the season. These UV-stabilized polyethylene shade net cuts summer sun by 50%, while allowing cool air to circulate freely. Use with fiberglass hoops and clip clothespins.

Shade nets for a fall garden in Kansas

Comments about Shade Nets:

Fall gardening in Kansas is tough. We can have a couple of weeks of perfect temperature, even throw in a frost or two and then have days of high 80s and 90s. Spinach, beets, kale, romaine, broccoli, all the cool weather crops love the shade provided by these nets on the hot sunshine days. They are easy to apply with large office binder clips so I just put them on until the hot spell is over and then remove them until the next hot spell comes along.

Simple, but effective!

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Shade Nets:

This has truly saved my tender fall lettuce, brocolli, and other cool weather greens from the unusually hot weather so far this fall and the intense sunlight that had previously caused them to wilt. The only negative has been that it makes it more difficult to apply pest control products with the netting in place.

Comments about Shade Nets:

I live in Texas and just about everything we plant gets burned up in the mid-Summer time. I wanted to start some fall veggies but I have never been able to get them started during the late summer time due to our heat. I decided to try the shade cloths this year. I have been able to get lettuce, broccoli, and other cool season crops to grow successfully under these cloths. I just drape them over the fiberglass rods bent into a "U" shape and anchored in my beds; I use heavy clips to hold the cloths onto them. I believe this will give an answer to the dilemma of dealing with hot climates and cool weather crops!

Comments about Shade Nets:

I use it to shade cool-weather plants such as Brussels sprouts and broccoli from the mid-day sun when they seem to be wilting. It is lightweight and easy to take on and off, but it would be nice if it weren't so obviously a plastic material and if you could indicate the amount of light it blocks - 1.e 50%, 25%, etc.

Comments about Shade Nets:

I have never been able to grow lettuce here in north GA, mostly because I wait too long to plant and the heat gets the lettuce. I thought I would give the shade netting a try. I have been amazed! We have had 95 plus temps this summer and my lettuce is coming right along....even in July!
I'm about to order more.

Comments about Shade Nets:

I applied the net after using light row covers to sprout lettuce and beets. With hoops in tact I replaced the row cover with shade net and used clothes pins to keep it in place. The greens are so tender and sweet-not bitter!!

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Shade Nets:

The shade net does a great job of protecting my lettuce from the harsh rays of summer. If you check the weather in Virginia for June into July of 2010 you will see constant temperatures above 90 and into 100+ on some days. The lettuce keeps growing even though it looks wilted or frail but it keeps going none the less. We just clipped some of the leaves for a salad tonight and after washing and rinsing you would never know how limp they looked just an hour before. The salad was great and without the supports and shade net we wouldn't have our own lettuce for dinner. I would recommend this product to others without hesitation.

Comments about Shade Nets:

The lettuces I transplanted in a cool period last week are doing fine with the current near 100-dgree heat, thanks to their shade nets (and admittedly a lot of watering). The shade nets are handy for transplanting anytime the sun is too much for seedlings, as well as keeping lettuce slowed down a little in the heat of summer.

Comments about Shade Nets:

The shade cloth looks grey/silvery in the photograph on-line and in the catalog. It is
black and I think would retain too much heat in Summer in the South. I returned it to Gardener's
