Practical gardening is laid out in an easy to follow and innovative method.
This is an easy read. Beginners like my own family found the instruction of this book very helpful. A 12-year-old shopped for and with minimal help built two square-foot-gardens and started planting this year using this book. The book guides your garden plans very well.

I am a novice gardener. I live in the city and for the first time will be able to plant in a community garden plot (80 sf). I have a family of 4 and was so excited to read this book and learn how even small plots can be so productive!! I had used the first book this man published and was happy with it but couldn't put my hands on it again. Then I saw that you carried his new book. It is fantastic!!! Much simpler than the old sqare foot gardening. I am looking forward to enjoying all the gardening I do from now on as the "chore" part is eliminated. Love, love, love this book. So easy to read and follow instructions. A real winner. I won't let this one get out of my sight.

I loved this book. It was very clear with easy language and it told me everything I have wanted to know about square foot gardening. The pictures are step by step and very detailed with lots of adaptability. I will definitely be trying this type of gardening in the spring. Even if I decided not to use the SFG method it gave me loads ideas and tips for other garden issues!
Comments about Square Foot Gardening Book:
Great ideas for making small gardening areas and making of the soil for the new beds. I wish I would have had this book before I had my garden landscaped would have set up the area differently for easier access and for working in the area. I found using the square pattern for planting not to my liking. I liked how the book told you how many plants you could plant.

I will be planting according to the guide in this book. I'm glad I bought the newest version as it has more tips due to more experience from the author and people he has worked with. I am involved with a new Community Garden and am sharing the knowledge learned from this book.
Comments about Square Foot Gardening Book:
Book is a quick read and arms you with loads of the most important information. My only disagreement is on the soil he recommends. I use garden soil, compost and composted manure and it works great. I avoid peat and vermiculite for environmental reasons.

I have always gardened the using the old long row method. As I have gotten older I am finding this harder to do. My husband and I wanting to do some raised beds this year. This book does such a great job of explaining how to do this....now I'm wondering why I didn't do this years ago.
Comments about Square Foot Gardening Book:

I read the quote by Abraham Lincoln that you had in your 'seasons greetings'message, I think it was, and it struck a chord. We all need to become more self sufficient. I am using this book to do just that! Pack as much into every square foot as possible! With an unemployed husband, 4 kids, and my hours being cut, I need to cut costs EVERYWHERE and growing what we eat will help immensely! Thank you!

Started my own above-ground garden this year and look forward to expanding next year with the ideas from this excellent book. I really couldn't say that I was displeased or disappointed in anything from this book. Wish the author would do more books on different types of gardening as well -- as I would probably purchase those as well if same style.

I have the book from 1981 . Love it. My garden is beautiful . I grow so much in it I share with the neighborhood . They come over to take pictures of it. They are amazed at how much you can get in a small area. I like the ease of taking care of it.

Comments about Square Foot Gardening Book:
I purchased this book to start planting a raised bed garden. I had some limited experience doing a small garden a few years ago winging it. There is a lot of useful information. I did start to feel like I was reading an "infomercial". I wasn't able to find some of his soil components. They aren't as easy to find as he thinks. I used my own mixture to so far great success. His plant information is very good and useful. Its worth a read, but he implies his way is the only or best way to plant, and it might not be for you.

I started with one 4x4 last year. This year I will have 6. Square foot gardening is easy and produces more vegs than row gardening, with alot less effort.Anyone can garden this way.Even this granny.
