Better than the old ones we have
By BabsalooVerified Purchaser from Ridgecrest,Ca on 12/3/2008

Comments about Red Tomato Savers, Set of 3:

We have used similar units that were thin gauge plastic which doesn't hold up here in the mojave desert. They worked great but deteriorated after one season. The deserts dryness is hard on plastics. These newer savers are heavier gauge by quite a bit, so we should get more mileage out of them.

I used these this year on three of my tomato plants as an experiment. The plants that had these did grow faster and actually needed less water than those without. I bought another set just now so that I can use them on all of my tomato plants next year.

Comments about Red Tomato Savers, Set of 3:

I had a few of these red rings already, so I planted 3 tomatoes in them, 3 in similar ones made of black plastic, and 3 without anything, all in the same row of my garden. The ones in the red rings grew better and yielded more tomatoes than the others; the black plastic was slightly better than nothing.

Comments about Red Tomato Savers, Set of 3:

When I bought my first set of these, it was because they were on sale cheap. They wee the old black ones. I can't tell you if the red really works better yet, as I bought these at the end of the season. What I can say is, I really like them. They have slots to put the legs of a tomato cage thru, if you use the cone-shaped kind. The keep weeds away from the base of the plant. They have a nice well that I put organic fertilizer in. The food then gets to the plant over a period of time as the water from rain or watering washes it into the soil. They snap together easily, even around an established plant. They conserve water by keeping the soil at the base of the plant from drying out so quickly.

Comments about Red Tomato Savers, Set of 3:

I had read that red mulch increased tomato production, but I wasn't willing to carpet my garden with red. These Tomato Savers seemed like a good alternative. While I can't say for sure they made a difference in production, because it is also dependent on weather and soil, I can say I had tomatoes earlier than my neighbor did. I can also say all of my tomato plants are covered with fruit, even though we had temperatures near 100 for two weeks early in the season. What I like best about these Tomato Savers is they let me target water right to the plant's roots and help avoid splashing the foliage with water and losing water to runoff. For that reason alone, I'd recommend them.

difficult to use in a 3x6 raised bed.
    roundness almost made them unusable.
square would be a good design for raised beds if they were 11.5 inches square.
round ones are not suitable for raised bed corners. can only be used outside the four corners.

I had seen ads for these but was very sceptical. A test in my garden this year convinced me. The same variety of tomato planted in the same kind of earth box with the same soil developed MUCH faster. Unfortunately, the deer ate everything before I could harvest any tomatoes but the ones with the rings set fruit 2 weeks earlier.

I use the tomato savers every year. I haven't lost one plant to cutworms, weed growth near the plants is minimal and watering the plants is made easier. One thing I'm not sold on is the ability of the tomato savers to inspire growth as it reflects the proper wavelength of light. The plants almost completely shade the tomato savers.

Comments about Red Tomato Savers, Set of 3:

I ordered these red trays along with your red tomato ladders. I naively thought the holes in the trays would be designed to accommodate the tomato ladders. Not so! My husband had to drill additional holes in the trays so that I could use them with the ladders. Why would these items not be made to automatically fit the other products (ladders and cages) that are most likely to be used with them? Otherwise, they seem to surpress weeds pretty good. I'm new at this so I don't have other growing experiences to compare in order to verify the claim about stimulating tomato growth.
