The product that started the "red revolution," this remarkable red mulch helps tomato plants grow faster and produce more abundant crops. Now it’s better than ever, with micro-perforations that allow water, air and nutrients to reach the soil surface. Convenient, pre-cut 3' squares are easier to work with. Developed jointly by the USDA and Clemson University, and proven effective in tests by a leading consumer magazine, this specially engineered red mulch is an exciting breakthrough for anyone who grows tomatoes. The red plastic actually reflects far-red light wavelengths upward into your tomato plants. This triggers the release of a natural plant protein that stimulates more rapid growth and development. Your plants will mature faster, look bushier, and give you a more flavorful, more abundant harvest than ever before.

  • University tested!
  • Improves yield and flavor of your tomatoes
  • Also warms soil, suppresses weeds, and conserves moisture

Comments about Red Tomato Mulch, Set of 8:

This an easy to use item which prevents weeds from growing around the tomatoes. I am not sure if it produces the extra tomoatoes it says it does.. Not willing to remove the plactic covering as a test due to the lack of weeds from using it.
If the USDA endorses the product - then it must do what it says.

I have used this mulch in the past and was skeptical re; the results. Now I am convinced. My old red plasic has seen it's better days after 7 years. Last two years I have not used it and I missed it, not much production from my container gardening! This year found a usuable piece and put it under my red cabbage. I am now a believer! One of my containers of red cabbage ( the one with the red mulch) is almost twice a big as the container without the mulch. Both planted at the same time! Ordering more red mulch today!

This red mulch really grows larger than normal tomatoes!

It really works. I was skeptical at first. So I planted some tomatoes with the red mulch and some without. I can attest that the red mulch worked!
I have really large and disease free tomatoes this summer!!

My only gripe about this product is that it's too thin. I have had some of the mulch rip.

    Great Product though!

I had used a roll of red mulch around my tomatoes before, and that was difficult to set in place due to the windy conditions here. These squares are much more convenient. I am now getting ripe tomatoes a month earlier than previously. I've also used red mulch under my red papper plants, with similar results.

Comments about Red Tomato Mulch, Set of 8:

The tomato plants are doing really well and I think this is the reason. However, I don't know if they will hold up for more than one season which makes them costly if they have to be replaced every year. Also, I have weeds growing under them and the pins used to hold them in place are hard to get out of the ground once in. On the other hand, the tomato plants that I have this around are doing much better than the tomato plants that are in superior soil without the red mulch. I definitely do recommend this product.

Very easy to use, did not use the large sheets as instructed, but cut them into smaller squares as I have only a few tomato plants.Easily accomplished so have tripled the number of squares available. I did notice my topsy turvy tomato plant had a sudden burst of growth, had placed plastic sheet cut to fit at top of container ( roots facing up in the tube). Must be it generates warmth! Other plants a far cry from bearing a ripe crop as weather has been wet and cool. Will know more after we have some summer around here!

So far so good. I put these around my tomatoes a few weeks ago and the plants look great. They have grown well and are really flourishing. I don't know how much the red plastic helps, but So far I have no complaints. It certianly helps keep the weeds away, which is a constant battle in the rest of the garden! You definitely need to install the plastic sheets though when the plants are very small, otherwise it would be very difficult.

These are sized just right for planting tomatoes, but you need to be careful when you cut to plant, mine ripped very easily. Once they are staked down they seem fine though. So far they are keeping the weeds at bay, too soon to tell if they will actually increase yields.

Comments about Red Tomato Mulch, Set of 8:

This red mulch did nothing to enhance fruit production for my tomato plants. In fact, I got fewer tomatoes this year than in the last six years. Maybe my plants are colorblind. Also, the tiny preferations in the plastic sheet are much too small to let water through. Water would pool up on them and not get to the plant. The holes need to be the size of a paperhole punch to be effective.

I liked that fact that the plastic was cut into managable pieces instead of having to deal with a large roll of plastic. The precut "X" in the center made it easy to open and it was large enough to insert the tomato plant. Also the small perforations made it easy to put in the pins to hold the plastic in place. I can't wait to see how my tomatoes do with this red mulch.

I like the idea of this product. The color helps with fruiting, the soil stays warmer and moist. I don't like that you have to pull up the mulch if you want to use fertilizer (unless you use liquid fertilizer). I am still in the beginning of the season, so we'll see how much it helps.

We tried these last year and had a bumper crop of tomatoes but I'm not absolutely sure these are what did it... we also had good tomato weather. so needless to say, I am trying them again. I figure it can't hurt because it definitely didn't hurt the crop last year. As long as it keeps working, I'll keepp using them. Plus they help keep weeds down. I use them along with Gardener's weed mat and it keeps weeding around the 13 tomato plants to a minimum.

This is our first year using red mulch... I have never had much luck with tomatoes, so I am hoping it will work this time. I ordered some beautiful Heirloom plants, and planted them in a real sunny spot and they seem to be doing great.
The red mulch was pretty easy to install. I would use some stakes to fasten it down a little better next time. My husband doesn't like the way the water pools on top of the plastic... but they seem to be getting enough water.
I'll let you know how it works, when I finally get some fruit!

We had a bumper crop when I used these. I can't be sure if it was the red mulch or if it was the weather but the red mulch definitely did not hurt because we had a lot of tomatoes. I will be using them again next year. I already ordered them. I thought about trying to reuse them but they got a bit tattered after one year. Make sure you buy the earth staples to hold them down and you may want to poke holes to allow more water to get through to the soil but even if you don't they still work well.

First the sheets are too difficult to place in an existing bed without securing at least two of the corners first. Now that I have had on them on a while water pools on top, while weeds push up from the bottom. Even worse I have found mosquito larvae in the water! I think I will stick with straw and grass.

Good plan to make the perforations! I zig-zag soaker hoses on the ground before I lay on the red, but now I get the benefit from rain or a random hose watering. Bigger pieces would be a huge time saver. And if a person has a small garden, they can cut the plastic to size. It takes a long time to lay these small pieces down in my big tomato garden. The next step in the process is ground staples. After that, I cut an X slit on the spots where I want the tomatoes, and use a bulb planter to dig deep, narrow holes. Then your wonder tomato ladders are set in place and I sit back and watch my pretty tomato garden grow.

I don't know whether the red plastic increases production more than black plastic. I have used black plastic with perforations so the water did not pool in the past and know that it helps. Whether that was because the black warmed the soil, or the plastic reduce water evaporation from the soil I don't know.

Personally, I find the squares that must be set down and anchored for each tomato plant annoying, I preferred the large sheet of plastic that I put down before planting and cut whole for each the transplant much easier.

I would not recommend a friend spend the money unless I know the red plastic helped increase production.

Comments about Red Tomato Mulch, Set of 8:

I've used red mulch for several years primarily with large self-watering tomato planters, but also on the ground in the garden under tomato plants and other vegetables. It seems flimsy but it is really a very sturdy plastic mulch that will last for years and can be used over and over (if you want, but it's very affordable and I usually buy new mulch each year). This is the first time I've ordered the 8-pack cut to size red mulch. The bulk mulch is a pain to try to cut to size... "pre-cut" is a great idea. I use it as a "evaporation-saving mulch" in self-watering planters. It really cuts down on watering frequency. Does it increase production? I don't know... I always get a lot of tomatoes and that's the objective. Plus, as mentioned, I don't have to fill the water reservoirs near as often as when I don't use plastic mulch.

I'm into the third or fourth season with the kit. Since moving to smaller property from my farm, I've not been able to have a real gardem. The kit provides plenty wonderful tomatoes though. I'd like to suggest that the Customer Service Rep. mention that there is a set of materials specifically for reuse of the Kit. I bought the soil and the fertilizer, not knowing there were mulch kits available. Later realized I needed one piece and had to order 8. If I'd read the catalog more completely, I may have realized that I could buy all three items for a great deal less that the way I did.[...]

I used this product with my container tomato plants. It was necessary to cut them to size. The tomato cages messed up the installation. The rain puddled on the surface, rather than seeping through. On a warm afternoon, I felt under the sheet and the soil was no warmer than the soil in nearby containers. Live and learn!

The paper is thin and tears easily. The instructions state they can be reused 2 to 3 seasons. I don't think so. They are so thin and flimsy that it is like working with tissue paper. Also, although perforated, the water still just lays on them and does not go through.

I bought 12 packages of the mulch. The main problem with the packages is...inconsistent film thickness and color. Some of the films were more pink than red. And, some were obviously thinner than others. The thin films allowed weeds/grass to grow underneath. As for the ripening factor, that will be determined when the fruit sets. The perforations need to be slightly larger to allow for better draining. All in all, a great concept.

Followed the instructions, but after it rain, I ended up with a muddy mess because there is no overflow for the water. So this year, I bought the mulch, thinking it would help with the rain. Same problem. Muddy mess and now I can't even add any plant food due to the mulch cover. I drill some holes in the planter and will have to start all over. Fortunely the the original Tomato Success Kit I bought is working fine (I wish I could attach pictures)

Comments about Red Tomato Mulch, Set of 8:

The type of plastic used for this product tears easily, so you are not as likely to reuse it. Gardeners Supply used to sell red mulch in rolls (larger sized sheets). The type of plastic used was more elastic and it did not tear as easily. You could reuse it from season to season. This product is NOT an improvement over the former mulch, BUT it is a good product.

Have read a few horticultural studies that tout the use of reflecting red light back up into the plant. I always defer to the experts, and suspect that Gardener's "Red Mulch" actually benefits tomato plants.
My experience with the "Tomato Success Kits" may have been enhanced by the Red Mulch... I can't say for sure... But, when four plants mature as early as ours do, and yield enough fruit to share with neighbors, ya gotta think something is goin' right!
Next year I'm gonna add a third kit; omit the red mulch on one, and compare the result... Will let ya know...

We use drip irrigation under artificial mulch, but rain didn't seem to pass through the red tomato mulch. It held puddles until they finally evaporated as long as 2 days after a rainfall.
I am not sure that it stimulated growth, either. Non-"red tomato" mulched plants seemed to do just as well, although they were different varieties from the red mulched varieties.

Rain water pooled on top, so I had to poke add'l holes in it. Weeds pushed up the plastic. It was not the easiest to put down, either. I used the large staples that were sold in the catalog, along with rocks to hold it in place. I will not use it again. Straw for me works much better and adds to the soil when it breaks down.

Comments about Red Tomato Mulch, Set of 8:

We tried this product with half our tomato crop and the other half, we planted as usual. The tomato plants with the red mulch are about 18" taller and have triple the number of tomatoes on them. It's great that they can be re-used each year. I bought an extra package to give as a gift to a gardening friend as we had such visible proof of how well they worked.

This product is amazing. My tomato plants are huge and healthy...not to mention the increased yield! I love the individual squares as opposed to the continuous sheet that needed to be cut which you previously offered. I also love the fact that they can be reused year after year which I consider an eco-friendly feature.

    Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Red Tomato Mulch, Set of 8:

I used this mulch for some of my tomatoes and some of my strawberries. I only used on half of them because I wanted to see how good it was aiding growth. Well the plants with the mulch are a bit bigger and are fruiting a lot more. So it does work. From what I have read about the red mulch, it causes the plants to believe they are overcrowded. They say this triggers a response in the plant to grow stronger in an attempt to compete. This does seem to be true. It also worked great for weed control. One drawback is that it doesn't allow water to pass thru very well. Water will stand on top for days after you water. Perhaps the small holes aren't big enough to allow the water to pass. I have to make sure that the water is directed to the hole cut for the plant to go thru to keep the plant from drying out. To deal with this, I now water the plants from a can but if you use a sprinkler the plant may not get enough water.

I find the red mulch looks very nice in the garden but it is difficult to put in the garden when planting large tomato plants. But the amount of tomatoes and the size of the fruit more then makes up for the difficulty in putting it down. Everyone is interested in that area due to the unusual red color, and they are equally impressed with the size of plants and fruits I'm getting.

My tomatoes still did well but my peppers and eggplants had a much smaller harvest. So I purchase more for this season!
