This is exactly what I needed - my Tomato Success Kit has worked so well that my plants were towering above the cage that was included! I would love to see the extension offered as a package deal with the Success Kit at a small savings when purchasing both. Even though I started later than most people in my area, I'm about ready to start harvesting tomatoes, and my plants are loaded with green tomatoes.

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

Had bought the starter kit. Should have bought the extenstion at the same time. My tomato plants grew very large. Adding the extension requires some disassembly of the existing cage. This is difficult to do alone. Get help to hold the sides. I managed, but having the sides fall down, while trying to adjust the plant so it was wihtin the cage. Putting on the extension was trying at best. In the end, I got it on and the plant is now growing over the top of the extension. I don't think I will try to add to it.

My advice is to buy the extension and add it before you need it.

This only two things that I didn't like - the clips are not easy to connect to the cages and I wish the small clips that clips the sides together that were the provided with the original cages would also have been included as my tomatoes last year got very heavy and fell over and broke due to the instability of the cages.

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

I received the tomato success kit for Mother's Day as a gift from my kids. My plants are now(July 13) about seven feet tall with massive amounts of wonderful tomatoes! It is such a phenomenon that we were joking with the neighbors that we have to start charging admission to our deck - everyone wants to see my plants close-up. One neighbor and I bought our plants the same day, from the same farm. I've got him beat three to one, in size and productivity. An amazing product!

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

We really needed this extension when the tomatoes in our planter went to over 6 feet. I wish we had put it on at the beginning, because it was difficult to put on after the plants had gotten so big. I'm really happy with it, though, because now we're getting plenty of support for the tomatoes.

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

These tomato cage extensions are excellent. I purchased the tomato success kit last summer and had very good results. I planted another tomato in it this summer and the plant loved the kit. I swear the tomato thought it was a tree instead of a bush, because it was getting so tall! In fact, it got so tall that I had to purchase one of the tomato cage extensions to contain the tomato plant. The extension was very easy to snap onto the cage that I already had in place. If my tomato plant gets any bigger, I will certainly be purchasing another of the tomato cage extensions. Great product!

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

I used this product last year, but a major thunderstorm actually knocked the entire tomato success kit over and the cage and extension got bent. This is not a problem with the product, it is sturdy enough, but nothing can withstand the kind of impact involved.

The extension is sturdy enough and adds a good amount of height to the cage and I think it will hold up well this year now that I have staked the entire kit in place.

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

I got the original extension some years back after I saw the new cage in the catalog (the older cage was not coated green and it came in only one size); I had to get the new cage so I could get the extension. I can't remember if the extension was available just at that time, but I remember thinking, "wow, I wish they had an additional extension to the cage so I won't have to rig up a Rube-Goldberg support on top". Next thing I knew there was the extension cage available. Now that I have the second tomatoe success kit, I ordered the extension kit along with it. The only minor issue I have with the cage itself (and hence with the extension cage, too) is that the snap-in construction is rather tedious, and some times the groove in the plastic corner pieces become worn or loose, and the cage doesn't "snap" in place. but I haven't had any major issues with it at all.

I've tried unsuccessfully for years to grow tomatoes in the sandhills of NC. I should have planted tomatoes this way a long time ago. I planted 2 tomato plants 8 weeks ago and the plants are now over l6 feet tall and covered in tomatoes. I can't wait until they ripen. I will have more tomatoes than my family of 4 can eat. I'll share the wealth with my neighbors. This is a MUST buy.

The extensions are sturdy, but can be difficult for some users to assemble. I have so many of them now that I have a quick system to put them together. I wonder how long the plastic clips will hold up under the brutal AZ sun, but so far so good. A folding cage, with folding extensions,(and no plastic) would probably be preferred by most, especially for storage. The cage is very sturdy though, and will hold a lot of weight. I have them 3 high (above the base cage) on my tomato plants, and they work very well so far.

Your tomatoes will grow so successfully with the Success Kit that you will, of necessity, need an extension. It is fairly difficult to put together the first time, but if you reinforce the cages with twist ties or lock ties it will hold together nicely. Once assembled, it works like a charm. I just leave mine assembled when the growing season ends.

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

I ordered the tomato self watering continer kit to see if I could grow tomatoes on my 3rd floor patio of my apartment and this product was awesome. I had one tomato plant, but I had so many tomatoes, I had to give them to my friends. I couldn't eat them fast enough. The plant got so big and tall I needed the extensions for extra support and they worked very well. I suggest adding the extenders to the cage before you put the plant in the container. I added the extenders after the tomatoes were growing and it was tricky adding the extra cage. I lost a few branches in the process. You may need help from a friend if you add the extenders after the tomatoes are already really tall and wrapped around the existing cage. But I still loved it! My entire porch is going to be a container garden next summer.

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

I can't believe how big my tomatoes have gotten this year! I'm very glad I purchased the cage extension! My main complaint is that it did not come with the tiny plastic c-clips to hold the sides close together (like the ones that came with tomato success kit). I ended up using twist ties to keep the pieces close together.

I am glad I purchased the Tomato Cage Extension. My tomato plant grew about 8" past the extension. Without the extension my branches would probably have snapped with the weight of the tomatoes growing off of them. I would highly recommend using the extension if you are growing tomatoes.

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

I was so glad to see that they had an extension to the container kit. The tomatoes quickly outgrew the initial kit. The pieces used to keep everything together are hard on the finger and don't snap together easily. I use cable ties instead and save myself the headache. That doesn't stop me from loving the product!

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

I truly love my Tomato Success Kit, and the extension I bought last year supports my super tall, healthy plants. The Tomato Success Kit is difficult to put together if you do not use wire or, in my case, plastic electrical ties to add extra support to the cage. It made all the difference in the world this year to have the ties, in addition to the provided clips. I'd highly recommend this product.

New Tomato Cage difficult to assemble

    Cage to support tomatoes
    Describe Yourself:
    Avid Gardener
    Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

At first, the idea of having a cage that is built out of wire panel sections, that would facilitate storage and are "easy" to put together seems to a "neat trick". But then when you go to use it, you find that 1)the wire panels if not perfectly trimmed will not fit into the clips (some grinding of the extra protusion is needed to make it work), also that repeated use (i.e. snapping together /taking apart) weakens the plastic pieces joining the wire panels (this was not an issue in the older design since it was all wire panels that where hinged with wire hinges).

Also note that the cage (the one that comes with the tomato success kit) has the same issues, plus is smaller than the actual plastic bucket necessitating splaying out of the legs to properly insert (a minor item but one would think that they would check the dimensions of both the bucket and the cage).

Further when you compare it with the older one-piece design (I have both new and old tomato success designs) you notice that large heavy plants (e.g. a well fed tomato plant loaded with fruit sitting in the full sun that is softening all those plastic clips) will cause panels to "pop" loose (needing then securing with ties or others methods - I used twine to tie the wire panels together).

My take is that the cage was designed to look "good" or to cut costs, but not tested extensively in usage; i.e. this needs to be revisited for improvements or replaced with older one piece cage.

    Comments about Tomato Cage Extension:

I can't imagine my tomatoes without the cage extentions. I have two tomatoe plants in each kit and both are indeterminate. Without the cage extention the plants would not be supported and with their heavy yeild they would be prone to breakage. The guage of the extension is excellent and supports the weight of the plants perfectly. Adding the extension was simple with the clips but there is no chance of them coming apart until you take them apart. This is an excellent addition to an excellent product. Thank you Gardeners' Supply !
