Located in: Gardening, Vegetable Gardening, Terrific Tomatoes

If you have a really big tomato crop this year, will your plant supports be able to handle the load? Our exclusive Tomato Ladders are the sturdiest you can buy, because they’re made with 7mm steel uprights — 20% thicker than others on the market! They’ll last season after season too, thanks to a weatherproof powder coating. Best of all, our Tomato Ladders are better for your plants. The rounded-V shape protects plants from wind and accidental breakage. The seven cradle-shaped cross-members give multiple places for vines to rest, and make it easy to set the ladders into the ground. Tomato Ladders will make the most of your garden space, reduce pests and disease, and give you a bigger harvest of juicy, unblemished fruit — guaranteed!

  • Ladders hold a huge harvest — over 100 pounds
  • Ladders cradle fruit-laden vines more effectively than stakes
  • V-shaped design protects each plant's main stem
  • Ladders nest for compact off-season storage
  • Add our new to support your tallest tomatoes

Bought 3 red tomato ladders and extensions, and now have 6-1/2 ft tall heavy-duty supports for my indeterminant tomato plants!

My tomato plants always grow too tall for the cages that I used. I already see your ladder supports will keep my plants up off the ground longer.

I LOVE these sturdy tomato ladders and extensions for my indeterminant tomatoes. They're 6-1/2 ft tall! Easy to assemble, clean/disinfect, store. My plants always grow taller than 6-1/2 feet, but these ladders will keep them upright better than 3 stacked tomato cages I've used for years.

These look great! Wish my tomatoes were living up to their great-looking supports. This is my first year gardening in this climate, hopefully I'll learn. But I love the way these look - they share a bed with some veggies growing on some tall green spiral stakes and the combination is very fun. They'll stack easily in the garage for winter storage, and I think I'll find other uses (and get more!) next year

i was torn between the cages and this product as i hate tomatoes (long story, read my other review) but i like growing 5 heirloom varieties each year. the cages are def better for tomatoes, however - these are awesome. we ended up having enough cages so my dad used this for the corn. don't laugh. they are tall and beautifully constructed. he tied string around them, for three levels, and put the corn in between as they were too heavy and lopping to one side. aesthetically, they are pretty in the yard. i don't even think i'll use them for tomatoes. probably something else. yes, they are pricey but they are reallllllly tall and very strong. they blend in (i wanted the red but i thought the green would go better in my yard). my dad, an avid tomato grower for over 40 years, loves this product. guess what he's getting for xmas

I was surprised and pleased with the sturdiness of these ladders. I was going to use one for each of my tomato plants (as seen in the catalog photo), but unlike the tomato cages that captures the plant all around, I needed two to support only one plant and as the package comes with 3, I used the remainder to support an eggplant, so far so good.

I got these to use for tomato plants and so much better than those flimsy cages that have sharp edges.
I have problems with deer cleaning their antlers on my trees and lilacs. I ordered some to place beside the young trees to support them and with some chicken wire around the outsides I am hoping the deer will spare my trees.
I also have Rose of Sharon that were blown down and now they have ladders holding them upright.

Ive looked at these for many years and decided to try them out for expanding the tomatoes this season. In a side by side comparison to my big cages the tower plants are bigger, taller and have a deeper green. Both are the same plants and were planted at the same time. As always it's nice to see products that work as they are supposed to.

Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

I have purchased this item in the past, and the ladders that were purchased first had the same heavy duty cross brackets the entire length of the ladder, not just at the bottom. I was extremely disappointed in this change, as while it did not make the ladder "flimsy", it did make it weaker and one of the thin brackets did break a weld when I was putting it in the ground. The ladders were better before, and this change was unnecessary. It reduced a great product to simply a good product.

I bought similiar style for Mandevilla. Didn't think it would work for tomatoes. I was so wrong. They are far more supportive and easier to use than cages. Also great for cucumbers, beans, peppers, and of course work great for any vining plant. AND because of the slimmmer profile of these supports they make it far easier to get around inside your garden. We had a huge storm the other night, they didn't budge but the cages right next to them did. Can't believe I waited so long to try them.

These are great tomato supports, heavy duty and durable enough to really hold the plants up for maximum health and fruit production. I declined to buy the ladder extensions when the GS customer service rep offered them to me, but I really think most people will want them. Suggestion: Isn't it better to just make these ladders 18"-36" taller so the extensions aren't needed? Anyway, these are much better than flimsier wire cages sold at most gardening stores!

Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

These look really nice in the garden. I only got them this year so I don' yet know how they stand up to heavy loads, but I am well satisfied with the height so far of the ladder w/o the extension (I am trying out 1 w/o the extensions & 2 with the extensions).

I chose green so I would be able to tell at a glance if tomatos were ripe - I thought that the red color might have distracted from that. Also the green, from a distance, blends into the landscaping much better.

I love the design of these ladders, but I can't see them holding a heavy load of tomatoes. I am using them for clematis vines, and to hold a saucer-style hummingbird feeder. Even with these lightweight items, I am using heavy rocks to hold the ladders in place. I recommend placing the ladders next to a wall so they have extra support.

Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

I hesitated at first about ordering these tomato ladders, because of the price, but it is definitely money well spent! The tomatoes are thriving, after just two weeks, and no more using single pole stakes and recycling my pantyhose as ties! Good thing, now that I am retired...

The ladders are very well made and sturdy. Good thing too, because my Huskies love stealing tomatoes right off the vine -- they think they are balls! Though I normally only grow plum tomatoes, in my little ghetto garden, I elected to plant a cherry tomato once again. I am curious to see how the "ladder" handles it. The last time I planted one, it was like out of a Sci-fi movie -- the plant took over the garden and grew like a weed! Had enough cherry tomatoes to feed the neighborhood.

I have never ordered anything from this catalog before, and was a little hesitant due to the price, but these tomato ladders are fabulous. The quality is amazing (very sturdy) and my tomatoes are standing tall! I've tried stakes (don't work with mature plants) and cages (so unattractive and hard to store after season) so I'm thrilled to have the perfect solution!

I love my ladders. Since I have dogs, I don't want them to have access to anything I might eat (poop and dog urine) so I plant a few vegetables in my front yard with the hope of making it appear artsy. My bright red tomato ladders with my yellow small tomatoes fits the bill. In addition I can watch the growing progress from my kitchen window, whereas, if they were in the back yard I could not.

I purchased seedling plants of various types of tomatoes (roma, patio, beefsteak, golden) and added the red tomato ladders after the seedlings were established. I found them more attractive and compact than the tomato cages - even though the cages fold flat for storage. I help the plants stay inside the ladder, but for the most part the plants are growing vertically by themselves.

I love the way "the ladders" look and the great color - RED, love it. I didn't really get a chance to use them with my tomatoes (already planted in containers), but I used them for supporting my tall flowers (Texas Star, Angel Wing Begonia). If the flowers get above the ladders,I'll just add the extension! I believe if used on big tomato bushes it would take all three of the ladders. I was expecting wider, but next year will try the set I have on the tomatoes and bell peppers. I love the way they fit together and are sturdy enough to hold up the vines. Always was looking for heavier supports for the vegetables, but I CAN RECOMMEND THEM FLOWER SUPPORTS. lOOK GREAT IN THE YARD.

I was looking for a sturdy stake system for my earthboxes for a long time--these work great! I had been worried they might topple over as my boxes are part of a roof garden and can get slammed by the wind. We've had two storms since I put them up and they're still as straight as the day I put them in. I also love, love, love not having to use ties; no more pockets full of random pieces of cloth, etc. and it makes for an easier clean up in the fall (straight into the compost without having to search for ties).
The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because they are a bit short for indeterminate tomatoes. I know they sell an 'extender' piece, but as a young gardener on a tight budget it bugs me that you have to buy something else for the product to work right. I can't afford the extenders and shipping so I just put a single taller stake in the corner of the ladder and plan to tie any plants that reach over the ladder to the stake. It will work, but it's less attractive and perhaps more to the point, slightly irritating.

Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

I bought these 3 summers ago and they have held up extremely well. I have 5 of the tall red and 5 of the shorter length in green. They must have sold in sets of 5 when I bought them. The red ones have faded to orange and one of them has taken on a slight bent curve toward the top, but they are still attractive and VERY sturdy! I will never go back to the traditional tomato cage after having used these. They never topple over even during high winds or when loaded with big tomatoes. They allow me to space my plants closer together too. I use the tall ones for tomatoes and the short ones to support my pepper plants. I think these are a must have in every veggie garden.

I never did mind paying a little more for items from Gardener's supply because they were high quality items that were unique. This is not the case anymore. I'm a Botany teacher who has many of these ladders. In the past, you received 5 ladders for the cataloge price. Now, you only get 3 ladders. To make matters worse, the cross brackets are remarkably smaller gage wire ... not the 7mm advertized. To reduce the number of ladders and make them flimsier is unforgivable Gardener's Supply. Shame on You!

I have used tomato and pepper ladders for about 5 years and I purchased another set this year! Most winters, my ladders have remained outside but the finish has not deteriorated - they still look new. The ladders are great for small gardening areas like mine in that they keep the tomato plants upright and provide good support. On occasion, I've had to anchor the ladders to the sides of my raised beds to support larger plants.

I have 25 of the tall ladders for tomatoes and 20 of the shorter ladders for peppers and eggplant. These are great for containing the massive growth of my tomatoes and for holding up the heavy fruit. I just ordered the extensions for my tallest cherry tomatoes and I'm looking forward to using them this summer, as some of my plants did outgrow the regular supports. I have noticed slight rusting where the coating has been nicked, but it's not that big of a deal. I stack and store these over the rafters in my shed during winter. When my tomato lust subsides and I no longer grow 30 varieties, I will probably use these supports for peas or summer squash.

I purchased more tomato ladders after trying out several different supports for my tomato plants last year. The tomato ladders won out over square cages, conical cages, and stakes that were used with mixed results to support over 20 tomato plants. The tomatoes grew comfortably within the ladders and it was easy to tie unruly branches to sections of the ladder as needed. Plus the ladders looked neat and attractive in my vegetable garden, which is in my front yard!

I have had people ask me about them and I tell them I got the ladders at Gardener's Supply and give them a catalog.

I thought these worked fairly well. I've used them now for 2 or 3 years. One thing I have found is that they rust very easily. Although the powder coat does help, it doesn't make the product last forever. I do make a point of taking them out of the ground at the end of the season and storing them in a garage. In addition, I still must use velcro gardening ties to support the branches.

I would only consider buying more if they were on sale. They're much too expensive for the overall durability.

Interesting use for rebar supports....maybe i'll check out a construction supply house and spray the powder coat on myself!

Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

Would only recommend these ladders in a flower garden where you need a growing trellis. I think the colors would be great for a flower garden not to mention having a neat trellis for creepers. As my tomatoes grew straight up the limbs kept getting caught underneath the "steps" of the ladder and it was pulling them down causing several to break. Still think the metal cages work better. I've even used metal cages upside down so I could use the metal spikes that are supposed to go into the ground to help support the heaviest of limbs as my plants grow. I can bend the spikes any way I want to.

I saw these in your catolog and knew they would be great for my candelabra euphorbia which is 8 ft high. Unfortunately the plant has out grown the ladder and I am going to have to purchase those extensions, but it has worked well to contain the plant. I am also using it for my Schefflera which has become very large, but I wish it were a bit wider.

Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

I was disappointed because these are small. They're strong and will probably last for years. After a summer of use on them they hardly look worse for the wear but even so. I knew the height and was still wishing for something taller because of the price but when I got it they aren't very wide, Tomato plants can get so huge and there's only so much weaving through the supports that you can do. Too expensive for what you get in my opinion.

I ordered 9 of these in red, but the color is very light, kind of a rhubarb color and not at all the fire-engine red depicted on the website. [...] I was so looking forward to my cool looking tomato ladders - but in almost-pink? No!

I used the ladders for my tomatoes, eggplant and peppers last year. They did a great job of keeping the plants controlled in the confines of a raised bed; I used the velcro ties to control them during the big growth spurt and they stayed in place the whole season. This year I am planning on trying them for my cukes and winter squash as well.

Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

I had my first garden this year and was excited to grow tomatoes. I bought these because I like things that I only have to buy once and will last for years. These will probably fit that definition and are very sturdy but even tho they're taller than a lot of tomato supports they aren't tall enough. Even more than that they should be wider. If you picture a triangle the two sides are 7 inches each and the third invisible side is 6 inches..... not very much if your tomato plant spreads out 2-3 feet. If I had known the size for the price I wouldn't have bought them.

I have been using wire tomato supports which would eventually tip/lean over with large sprawling plants, esp in windy weather. I used these IN ADDITION to my wire cages and the plants were less likely to tip/lean over. I would not recommend them as the only support to use with healthy large tomato plants but they are better than bamboo or metal stakes with wire cages.

I didn't find anything at all wrong with this
product. With the planting season over, and now thinking about next growing season to come, I decided that another set of 3 would suit our small garden nicely. These ladders are extremely sturdy, and each one held a large heavy vine laden with lots of big tomatoes. I was very pleased with my purchase, and thought that the price was equal to the quality of the item.
I am looking forward to next seasons crop. Oh,
also, absolutely GREAT for cucumbers too. We had our cucumbers planted next to our tomatoes, and the vines grew up into the ladders which held not only the tomatoes, but the cukes too.

I live in an area with gravel soil. While the soil is very fertile and has great drainage, it is very, very rocky. Rocks the size of softballs are not uncommon. Most of the wire cages you commonly find are very difficult to shove into the soil without bending them because of the stones. These tomato ladders were very sturdy. They were easy to install. I did use a rubber mallet to gently pound them into the ground. They stayed in place all summer with large tomato plants on them. I was very pleased with their performance and have purchased six more for use next summer. I would recommend them to anyone who asks.

My tomato plants grew very tall with this product. I didn't purchase them until after my plants were planted and growing well so I had to be careful not to affect the roots when I put in the ladders. I had some problems with one of the three ladders tilting over, but I believe that was because they went in after the plants were growing for a while. I can't wait to use them again next year. They also look attractive in the garden. Great product!!!

I can't believe I ever raised tomatoes without these ladders. Every plant is heavy with ripening fruit yet these ladders hold the plants straight and tall. Now I can easily see and pick each tomato when it's ready, and each fruit gets more sunlight because the ladders eliminate droopy stems. Next year I'm buying the extensions because my plants grow much taller on these ladders. Another bonus - my tomato garden is visible from the street and these ladders are a big improvement over the jury-rigged contraptions I've used over the years. Other neighborhood gardeners have actually complimented me!

We grow our own hybrid tomatoes in whiskey barrels. I can fit 4 plants in each barrel. Get the extensions if you are going to buy the ladders. Our plants were above the top of the ladder + extension - that's 6-1/2 feet tall - by the middle of July! We are having a very cool summer and everyone else is complaining that their tomatoes aren't growing. Our plants produce vines with 14-16 tomatoes on each vine, these ladders are working well and gently support the fruit. Also having good luck with the reusable plant ties (velcro tape). I will be buying more for next year! Our garden is the envy of the neighborhood.

7/24/09: These tomato ladders were an addition to a set of five purchased previously for use this year. I live in Maine, and with all the rain we've had in June and July, the garden is very slow to get started. Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

For many years I have used cages but thought I would try the ladders. Best move I ever made. The plants are growing nicely - only downside is making sure you keep them within the ladder. Nothing is on the ground and the ladders look quite attractive in my garden between the glads and other flowers.

Used these in my small raised bed vegetable garden. I got the red because the green was out of stock. I am very happy with them. The red brightens the garden and looks so cute. They help to keep the tomatoe plants from touching each other which causes plant diseases to spread. So far my tomatoe plants look healthy. I bought 2 sets (6) and will be coming back next year for more, as I usually grow 8 tomatoes and 4 cucumber plants. (I grow the cukes off the ground also in wire cages because I have had problems with soil disease - yellow and wilting leaves).

I ran out of wooden stakes and wanted to try something different for our tomatoe plants. My 11 year old twin daughters and I were looking through your website and we came across the tomatoe ladders. Of course, we ordered the red one to match the tomatoes. We continue to fuss over the plants with wooden stakes and receive lots of compliments with the ladders. Our plan, to replace our old wooden stakes!

Tomato ladders are easy to use, and can be pushed into hard ground by stepping on the lowest rung. I will order more for next year, as I staked my other tomatoes the old way, with wood stakes that aren't as sturdy. I've had the wood ones fall over when the plant gets big and heavy. I haven't tied the tomato plants to the ladders yet, as the design of the ladders keep the plants upright.

These ladders are the best product I have found--in many years of organic gardening--to support tomatoes. I initially tied the stalks to the ladders when the plants were young. But, as they have grown, the ladders allow the plants to "grow into them" naturally supporting the fruit laden branches. And, they allow you to grow more plants in a small area. I added two additional plants to a small plot and I am amazed at how well my plants are doing this year....I will be giving away a lot of tomatoes this year!

I grew my first tomatoes last year and didn't really want the expense or storage challenge of cages, so I used rope and bamboo posts. While that worked, it wasn't pretty, and was labor intensive to string them up. My garden is very small, and I grow my veggies in water reservoir containers. This year, I wanted things to be a bit more elegant, sturdy and most of all easy. These tomato towers were the perfect solution. They are barely noticeable in the garden, while providing strong support, and best of all, fit easily in my boxes! So worth the one time investment.

I got these tomato towers to use in my new raised beds. The 11 inch prongs stick down far enough to be firmly anchored. They look much better than my 30 year old ones made out of old fence, and though pricey may last a long time.

My only critique is that the extentions should be able to be added on to the base instead of going into the ground 1st. Currently you need to decide ahead of time just how tall a ladder you will need. If you make a bad estimate you are stuck with the original height. If you could add the extension on to the base after the fact, you could make the ladder higher as/if the need arises later. Otherwise I am happy with the product it is very sturdy and easy to use

Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

I have been using the tomato ladders plus the extensions in my garden, where, this year, I am growing many tomato cultivars to compare them. So far I have purchased 2 sets of ladders plus 2 sets of extensions. I love the cheerful red color, and the fact that, with the extensions they'll be tall enough for many of my tomato cultivars. Most tomato towers I've seen aren't. I don't know yet if the red color will help set more flowers than would any other color. Although it is still early in the season, I am already liking the fact that I don't have to tie up each new branch, as I can rest them on the horizontal bars.

I don't know how these supports will do in a heavy wind, with heavy tomato plants on them. There are only 3 fairly short prongs to stick in the ground. I am backing up a few of mine with regular sturdy tomato stakes, just in case. This seems redundant, but I am not ready to sacrifice 8 tomato plants if these stakes blow over

By the end of the season, I should know whether I can recommend these to a friend. I may also increase my overall rating at that time.

We grow tomatoes in Earth Boxes. Last year, we had a difficult time staking them. When I saw these in the catalog, I thought they would be perfect and I was right. They fit easily inside the Earth Boxes to support the tomato plants. A great purchase that will last many years!

Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

A few years ago I bought the tomato cages from you. They work the best for us. When putting in Roma plants they tend to get very large and well-rounded. The cages have been great for them. I'm confident the tomato ladders would not have worked well for the Roma, as they get too large. We have experimented with the ladder with the Boxcar Willy and Brandywine varieties. They are doing okay. If I could change them out I would use a tomato cage and stack them. I'm sure there are varieties that do very well with the tomato ladders but we have found that the varieties we planted do much better with the tomato cage. The convenience of being able to stack them if need be, along with folding them for storage, is great. I realize that tomato plants are really a vine but some varieties get very large with lots of fruit in which the ladders are unable to provide proper support. I'm sure they are great for a specific variety tomato plant.

As a participant in a community garden, I can always find my plot by looking for the tall, red tomato ladders. They are sturdy and are holding up my heavy vines very nicely. They seem very durable, so I will not have to replace them next season. They will be used for many years.

I guess I was expecting more than a tri-pole tomato stake. I thought I would be able to use it more like a cage, but you have to tie your plants to the poles. With that in mind it works well as a tomato stake, but I could have purchased poles for MUCH less money.

It's about time that someone came up with this idea for a tomato support that truly works. Everything I have tried over the years were a little help, but these ladders are strong and can really support a heavy tomato plant that is loaded with fruit and never fail to do what they are supposed to do -- support the plant.
My thanks to whoever is responsible for the idea of these ladders.

Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

I love the ladders. I have raised beds for most of my vegetable garden and these ladders are perfect for the eggplants and the tomatoes. I don't have to tie the plants up so the plants develop stronger stems and support themselves. The stands support the leaves and fruit.

The only downside is that they are rigid so winter storage is just stacking them together.

Comments about Tomato Ladders, Set of 3:

The ladders are very strong, easy to install and store. The red ones brighten up the garden and are attractive with the ripe tomatoes. However, you do have to be dilligent about training the vines as they are growing. Keeping off suckers helps the vines to grow into the ladder. A little more of the circular part would help. I have bought them for all my 12 tomatoes plants and they work better than any others I have purchased in the past.

I used the ladders with the automators in pots in the front of my south facing house to grow tomatoes. I ordered the ladders after my plants were about a foot high and broke off some branches getting the ladders and automators in place so will plan on installing them when my plants are smaller next year. They seem very sturdy and look nice in my pots. I put marigolds in the pots also and they look nice.

As an avid vegetable, herb and flower gardener I was so happy to finally find a decent support for tomatoes that is sturdy, never falls over with loaded plants and stacks conveniently for storage. I bought another set of 3 this year but was sad to see the price was nearly the same as I thought I had paid for a set of 5 a few years ago, and the lateral supports had been replaced with a thinner metal which looks more easily bendable. Still a great product but I will treat the new ones with care as they don't seem as sturdy.

We purchased the ladders last year and were very satisfied. This year the price was the same but we recieved only 3 ladders instead of 5. The latteral cross pieces were of a lighter gauge wire than the original ladders and one of the welds broke on the first use. This is a classic case of taking a high quality product and ruining it.
