Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Being a sr citizen, I sometimes have difficulty assembling things that I purchase. This Tomato Success Kit was SO easy! Even the trolley was a breeze! I am attaching a picture of tomatoes planted at the exact same time out and were the exact same size at planting. LOOK at the difference! No tomatoes yet though! I have high hopes! I grow indoors in a sunroom since I live in Wyoming where we're lucky to have 2 dz frost free days a year! I'd move it in and out but it's much to heavy now with the tomatoes almost touching the ceiling!

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

This is my second ear using this planter. It could not be any easier to set up. Don't make the mistake of putting in too many tomato plants. Two is sufficient. And don't forget to fertilize regularly as this is a planter that water will run through and therefore leach your fertilizer. The only drawback I can see are the little plastic fasteners used to hold the supporting cage together. A couple broke. I suppose you could come up with your own method of supporting the cage.I think I will call customer service and see if they can send a few more.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I live in a duplex apartment and container garden every summer. My old containers required me to lug water up from my basement to water veggie plants every day. The self-watering containers are a God-send, because you fill the resevoir and it lasts a very long time before you have to add more water. Wonderful! Sturdy, tomato cage easy to assemble. I bought 2 and love them! My tomatoes look great - growing better than ever before. Cucumbers and green beans doing very well also!

So far, so good. My 3-year old son 'helped' me put it together. Directions were easy to follow. Early Girl Tomato plants are growing great in this attractive container. I love the reservoir feature as I am a busy mom who can't tend to and water the plants daily. My son likes filling the reservoir. Cage is doing well to support the rapidly-growing plants. Looks like a winner! Great summer project to do with the kiddos and it encourages healthy eating, too!

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I'm not much of a gardener but have always envied my friends with their vegetable gardens. I decided this would be the year I'd grow my own tomatoes. My sister gave me her Gardener's catalog and when I saw the tomato Success Kit I just had to try it. I love the idea of the kit having everything needed to grow tomatoes, as well as taking the guesswork out of watering, which is where I often fail. This is really attractive on my deck, and although I have no tomatoes yet, I know it's just a matter of time. I highly recommend this kit to anyone starting out or if you have limited space.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I live in a duplex-type apartment and previously used regular containers to plant my veggies. I had to carry water up from my basement every night - very labor intensive. This is the first time I tried the self-watering containers. They are wonderful! Now container gardening is a pleasure. The only thing not so great is there should be more cage clips included to make the structure more sturdy and stable. Other than that I love my 2 containers. I'm thinking about getting another smaller one.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

This kit is fantastic. It is well-made, easy to put together and it is growing some beautiful tomato plants. I have always wanted to grow tomoatoes on my deck, but could never find just the right way to do so. I saw these in the catalog, and ordered them. When they arrived, I put them together and planted a tomato plant in each. The plants are thriving. So far, I have only had to water once in 2 weeks. We had quite a bit of rain the first week, but we have had very little in the past week. I am guessing that once we get into the heat of the summer, I will still only have to water every 3 - 4 days.

I love this produce, and will probably order two more next year.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

For 3 weeks, on my sunny balcony, I have been growing indeterminate tomato plants along with basil in 2 of these containers (plus wheels and cage extensions; 1 tomato plant and one basil plant per container). I cannot believe how much the plants have grown already. And they look incredible. I am not sure how well the soil drains - I did trim off the areas as directed in the instructions but there is a little bit of green mold in the soil. We have gotten a ton of rain and a reasonable amount of sun this Spring(in May, Maryland). This may be my best container tomato planting ever.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

This is my fifth year using the tomato success kit, I love the convenience. The yield from 2 tomato plants (which fit in 1 success kit) is huge. I have several kits on my deck (due to deer/and best sun area, and they provide a hardy crop. I harvested much more than my friend who has twice as many plants in her garden. The only downside is the older kits/supports are more difficult to store. The newer kit supports are easier to store, but very tough to assemble.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Wish I knew about this self watering container when I lived in hot, dry inland California. No matter how large a container I used, I would come home each summer afternoon to wilting tomato plants. Now I live in a different location in Northern Calif and have a raised vegetable planter. I have tomatoes planted in the raised planter, in 2 tomato growbags, in the Revolution hanging planter, and now in the tomato success kit. I have found that the raised planter is the best, but the success kit is the best container ever. The moisture level is consistent and easy to maintain (I have a drip line going into the water reservoir. The tomatoes are no longer stressed from extreme water fluctuations. Growing tomatoes successfully has become so easy with this kit. I am glad I purchased the optional casters, and I am sure the optional cage extension will come in handy since I have indeterminate Mr Stripey and Lemon boy plants. I think I will dump the grow bags next year and buy a 2nd success kit--it's that good.

I went from 2 1/2 acres to a condo patio. This made it possible to bring a little patch of heaven with me! Love the fact that it stands up to the hot Florida summer without stressing my plants. The reservoir keeps them happy...and I reap the benefits! The tomato cage is the only downfall. It is a little flimsy, but I reinforced it with tomato ladders...more height and added strength make it perfect! Don't forget the wheels! Think beyond the tomato! This planter is great!

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Firstly, there aren't a lot of parts, so the unit assembles in minutes. I highly recommend getting the optional casters, as they make it easy to move the planter so the tomatoes get optimum sunlight. Not suggesting this should be a big deal; I just move mine once a day, but I think it gave the plant a boost. Also, the casters made it easy to move the unit closer to the house when the wind picked up.
Something I just recalled: the plant grew so big that I had to refill the reservoir almost every day during the summer. Definitely something to watch during the hottest months.
We had so many heirloom tomatoes that we gave away handfuls and still had so many left that my husband and I ate tomatoes almost every day. Last month I bought a second kit to plant a Roma type suitable for canning tomatoes.

Well packaged, and easy to follow assembly instructions. The only small problem was the cage was awkward to assemble, but don't know how you could improve that. A couple of the clasps broke during assembly, and that is the only thing that kept this from being a 5 star rating. They were easly replaced with plastic tie wraps.

Bottom Line:

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Living in an apartment in the city, my husband and I have lots of experience growing indoor plants, but are new to outdoor gardening and tomato growing. We don't have a lot of outdoor space and our soil is likely contaminated with heavy metals, so this kit was a perfect solution to these issues, giving us the ability to grow tomatoes right in our driveway!

We bought two different cherry/grape plants for the potter and we were pleased to see them grow very quickly! However, we soon realized that our plants needed the entire water reservoir every day so we kept a hose on a timer in the refill hole that went on every morning. Our plants started off looking great and produced lots of tomatoes, but then the leaves started to turn yellow and dry up. We consulted at gardener friend who said they looked like they needed more fertilizer. This was after we already used up the entire container of fertilizer the kit came with, so we bought more and the leaves started looking better again, the tomatoes themselves never seemed to suffer though. This issue might have had more to do with our lack of tomato growing experience versus the actual potter though.

I gave this kit 4 stars instead of 5 because the water holding capacity could be bigger and I think it is a little expensive. Also, don't be fooled by the "Terra Cotta" description, that just refers to the color of the plastic. Other than the small water reservoir, the design works really well and it was really the only product that we could find that suited our needs without having to build something ourselves. It was wonderful to have so many fresh organic tomatoes all summer and we look forward to doing it again next summer!

Over 10 years, I have accumulated 3 of these, and right now all 3 are on my deck, right outside my kitchen, planted organically for the fall garden season in Florida. The one I just received has tomatoes, the previous one has cucumbers, and the oldest one has herbs. Everything looks very healthy and I see developing fruit. I was trying to standardize the look, but each is a little different -- especially the cages, the watering method, and the reservoir platforms.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I live in South Florida in a town home with a balcony as my yard.
I was successful growing tomatoes in pots as long as I watered them morning and night. Yes it was a lot of TLC and effort it was worth it for the harvest.
Until, I went away for a few days and all my plants were ruined.
My children up north have used the "tomato success kit" for a few seasons with a great harvest.
I bought organic seeds and sprouted them and planted them in cups for a few weeks and voilà.....I recently planted them in my new self watering planter & and look forward to watching them grow. I am so positive about this because the plants are looking great and it is very hot here. I have bought another self watering planter to create an herb garden!

SO FAR THE 'SUCCESS KIT' IS A SUCCESS...

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

Using two (2) Kits on the fourth (4th) floor, Outside Deck. The first one started July 25th & happy to see some nice results already. Three tomatoes on the Determinate plant & the (Indeterminate)is flowering and budding nicely.
After losing 14 Heirloom Tomato Plants grown in 15 Gal. Containers/with All Organic Help -still they Died...Problem may be the Very Close Freeway in Burbank, CA -only a half-football field away...Some experts feel the Carbon Monoxide is a big pollutant to these wonderful plants. So, hopefully with a New Way of Growing I may get lucky. I can not see how you get more than 2 Indeterminate Plants in one kit. Or, 1 Determinate & 1 Indeterminate. The self-watering system seems to be doing its job -even though it's late in the season. IF, these work out -would get 2 more and add some Cold Weather Plants for the coming Winter. After about 30 years (off and on) I've had great results on Ground Level- so, 4th Floor -Outside Deck is brand new to me.
A few years back I had 35 Plants going, mostly in the ground - but quite a few in Containers. One thing with these kits is I can't figure out how much water really is in the 4 gal. capacity holding area -must bend down with a Flashlight to see - otherwise you keep filling and of course it will overflow & will tell you it's full. Must be a better way than that. The second kit was started 9 days after the first one, due to Non-Shipment of One set of Casters (on the original shipment) -moving these around on a Deck or Patio is important. It is a NEAT KIT & I am pleased so far, hopefully that will continue and I'll make a Hero out of them.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

The Organic Success Kit was easy to assemble and our tomato plants are thriving! It has only been 3 weeks, however, we went on a week long vacation during very hot weather and the plants did wonderfully! I'm glad I purchased the cage extensions because our plants are growing like crazy and we'll need them within another week. I would also suggest buying the wheels because they have come in handy when we need to move the planters, e.g. washing down the deck & placing it where the sunlight is best.
I HIGHLY recommend this product!

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I received my second pair of tomato success kits last month. This time I purchased the organic version which I planted with low acid lemon boy tomatoes. In two weeks since I planted, my tomato plants have tripled in height and width. I do not know at this time if this is due to your organic soil that I received in the kits. My 2 older success kits provided me with tremendous tomato crops in the last 2 years. It has a regular garden supply container soil mix. This year I planted pole beans in the 2 units and all 4 units have the cage extensions installed. They are easy to move around with the casters on. This is important for a person in a wheel chair such as I am. I am planning to buy more this fall as I extend my wheel chair garden. Any problems I would have, would not be due to the quality of the garden supply products, but due to salt air from the ocean. A screen cloth is over part of the area that I use as a garden. I currently have my 4 success kits out in front of the house with no screen cloth as a test to see if the tomatoes and pole beans will do well.

For a self watering planter it seems that I have to water it about every day so I'm not sure why it is touted as self watering. But I like it because it seems that my tomato plants look great. This type of planter should be made for other types of plants, i.e. sold without a tomato cage.

I have killed most plants that come anywhere near me. And yet, I have had 3 successful seasons with the tomato success kit. I don't know how Gardener's does it. It's magic. I have even bought this for an elderly relative who has mobility issues. We have the trolley which makes it higher off the ground so the pets don't use it for ... well ... you know ... so I wish it was a bit more attractive. However anything that let's me grow something I can actually eat will get no complaints from me. We've even had to get the extra cages because the plants get so big. I've used it in Massachusetts and Florida with the same great results. I highly recommend it for beginning gardeners, pet owners, mobility impaired, and black thumbs!!

We're growing Pomodoro tomoatoes for the first time this season and the plants are doing wonderfully on the deck in these containers. The first batch was doing so well that we purchased a second container set. It's very easy to move the filled container around on the deck with the added coasters. I bought this because I now have full sun on my deck and love tomatoes and thought I'd give it a try. I can't tell you if the reason I have so many tomatoes on each of 2 plants is because of the plants or the planter and success kit, but I'm inclined to think the success kit gets most of the credit.

I did as the instructions said and in less than a month my cage is filled with 2 plants - early girl and another determinate - each bearing many flowers and growing tomatoes. I can't wait to taste!

At first I loved this product. I followed all the directions and the plants were growing beautifully. Unfortunately though, the soil stays too moist (even when the container below is dry) and mildew has developed. The tomatoes are also showing signs of blossom-end rot. I'm trying to dry out the soil to see if that helps. I had high hopes for this product but it did not work for me...

First time using a container garden, ordered this one after seeing it on my brother in law's porch. Last year was a terrible year for all gardens here and we got basically no return from our garden. Plus with my husband's back problem, he can't bend down anymore to plant, weed, tend to a regular garden so it seemed like a good time. We followed kit instructions, everything was included (except plants) very easy and they are flourishing nicely on our porch and smell wonderful. I wish the kit included more caging so we would have it ready and not have to order it later. High quality, recommend getting the casters for the bottom which are great for moving around porch if needed

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I planted 2 tomato plants (Roma and a purple heirloom) as per the instructions about a month ago. Both plants are now about an inch from the top of the cage and I am starting to see blooms. It was very easy to assemble and plant with the provided instructions, including the cage. It is very easy to fill with water from a garden hose or spouted container, which I do every 3 or 4 days. The plants are growing very quickly. My only complaint is that the 2 plants seem a bit crowded in the one container. Overall, a very good system that, so far, seems to provide an optimal set-up for growing tomatoes.

I also prefer the new fill method over the older fill tube method, but both seem to get the job done just fine.In general, I am very pleased and look forward to 6 healthy vigorous tomato plants and big harvests come August.I also appreciate the fact that you seem to have taken previous customer reviews to heart which is evident in the new design. My brother is also very impressed with my kits as well. We're both looking forward to seeing how the plants produce.

So far though, looking great!

It's still early in the growing season so don't know how it will do in hot summer weather, but for this horribly wet spring, the tomatoe plants I put in this system have grown beyond belief already and have put out bloom buds - way ahead of the one in an upside down planter and the ones swimming out in the garden area. I am so glad I bought this system, easy to assemble, and easy to move around to follow the sun on a partially shaded patio. Plan on buying a second one next spring.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

This is our third year using the tomato success kit(s) in South Central Kansas where it is hot, dry, and windy. The first year we had less success with the first one which was on a corner of the house where it was protected from the wind, but got only morning sun. Then I moved them all to the northwest behind a retaining wall, which provides protection from the wind, but is in full sun starting about 10 a.m. We had great results: all the tomatoes we can eat.

The cage is difficult to assemble, but has withstood the test of the years. A constant water supply and plenty of cage area to support the plants are essential to our success with this product in our climate.

This is an outstanding all inclusive kit of soil, fertilizer and self-watering convenience. Doesn't get any easier that this! My healthy, strong plants have truly benefited from this set up and are now loaded with tomatoes. Also bought the casters so I can roll it around the deck. This is so convenient and easy.

Planter great, cage a pain
By An Amy in GA from Rome, GA on 4/11/2010

Cons:
Difficult To Assemble, Flimsy
Best Uses:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

The planter was fine - roomy enough for two tomato plants, and the reservoir was helpful in reducing watering needs during the hot summer months. But the wire cage was a pain to assemble (you need at least four hands) and kept falling apart in windy weather. I finally just staked the plants.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

We purchased this success kit with great hope for a bucketload of tomatoes. We put it on the casters offered and I dutifully moved it so it had sun ... We figure for a [$]investment (including two excellent tomato plants), we got ONE TOMATO ... and it was *soft*. I know last summer was NOT a good growing summer ... BUT ONE TOMATO???? The planter, surrounding fencework, dirt, etc., are in the shed ... I will not bother with this again. The item itself is in perfect condition for another summer's 'adventure' ... but to me, it's not worth the work.

Comments about Organic Tomato Success Kits:

I just received the Organic Tomato Success Kit and the trolley two weeks ago. [...]Planted two Early Girls and already have 8 tomato's that look perfect. We had a really good size and successful garden here in Tucson at our last house but now live on an acre in the desert so we have had to avoid the traditional garden. We thought we would start with one of these planters with tomato's to see if they would work. So far very pleased and if all goes well in the next few weeks will be ordering a few more.
