I set the Tomato Success kit up on my deck. My tomato plants are thriving and it is very easy to keep them watered and fed. I got the wheels so I can move the unit out of the way when necessary; it rolls very easily. The unit could be used for other plants and has no holes in the bottom so you could use it indoors. Great product!

Just have to let you know how pleased we are with your Tomato Success Kit. It is all it says it is and more. We ordered 2 early girl tomato plants from you as well, and what you see in the attached pictures are those 2 small (6 to 8") healthy plants. Planted early April and now it is June 2nd. It will be a pure delight to enjoy a tomato with real flavor and taste!

You can rest assured we will be back next growing season for replenishment supplies for the kit we have now. Many thanks for a great growing system that indeed works as advertised!

From the first day that the plants were added we've had inches of growth every day. An amazing amount of tomatoes will start to be harvested this weekend. We've had to order the extension kit because they are growing so rapidly. The casters should be included in the kit, but other than that it is the best tomato product that I've ever loved. Keep up the good work guys!

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I have wanted to grow tomatoes on my porch for a while, but the daily watering was too much of a task in the mornings and evenings with a house full of little kids, full-time jobs, and all.

Finally, got this kit - it took half an hour to assemble the pot and cage (which seems very sturdy, by the way), fill it with soil and lots of water and put my tomato plant in. It has been two weeks, the plant is twice its original size, looking fat and happy and about to start flowering! I am hoping for abundant crops this summer - and so far there is ample evidence to suggest that we might drown in cherry tomatoes! Yippee!

There is nothing I love more than home grown tomatoes, but our yard only gets enough sun smack in the middle. I bought the planter and put it on wheels so we could move it to cut the grass, and not have to dig up the middle of the yard. It is PERFECT! The plants are thriving, and we can't wait for tomatoes! I would recommend this to anyone, and already have! Well worth the investment.

Nice System. Given our horrible cold spring so far, I would not have any tomatoes started at all if it were not for the fact that this can be kept indoors until the weather finally decides to warm up!

Tomatoes grow very fast, probably due to stable water and mostly ideal soil.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I am a flower gardener trying my first round of edible fruits and vegetables. I loved the ease of using this product. The instructions were simple to understand and follow. I planted 2 tomato plants in the planter as instructed and they have grown an average of 1 foot a week. The plants are healthy and thriving. They are flowering like crazy, so I can assume that they will yield a lot of tomatoes from just 2 plants. When they say "Tomato Success Kits" they MEAN IT! I am already planning on purchasing a couple more. I have this one set up by my pool. It's very attractive and everyone who's seen it wants one! I love it and highly recommend it.

The TMSK is easy to use and takes limited space. Our growing season is short, so I'm hoping to get a crop of both determinate and indeterminate tomatoes, since I planted early. So far, my plants are thriving! The kit is complete, the only thing I added was the plants. So far, it looks like they will grow quickly and bear a lot of fruit,.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I do not think there is enough room for all I have to say about this product. First - I have always planted tomatoes for years for the most part in the ground. I live in North Central Texas and it tends to start getting hot in May. The other issue we have to deal with when hot weather rolls in is no rain. I was very skeptical when I originally purchased this item. Well, you have proved me wrong. I have NEVER had tomatoes grow this well. I checked on the tomatoes after just one week and could not believe how lush - full of blooms - really really healthy. OK - I originally ordered six and have now added three more. The other problem I have had is blossom drop - so I was concerned if this was going to happen. I have not had any blossom drop. Lots of tomatoes are forming. This is a great great great product. I will be back next year for the refill kits. Thanks from a happy Texas gardener.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I have a salad garden on my deck that consists of several self-watering containers, three of which started as Tomato Success kits. I've used them for three years now and they are still in great condition and do a fantastic job of growing tomatoes - possibly even better than growing them in the ground.(They work very well for bush beans, too.)

I love the fact that all the water and fertilizer that goes into them goes to the tomato plant - no waste.

Because the kit is so complete, I've given them as gifts to folks who would like to try gardening but have very little experience. The self-watering container is so easy to use I can have my 10 year old neighbor take care of my plants while I'm gone with no fear.

The *only* downside - and not much of a downside -is that the containers are quite heavy when full so place them where you want them to stay all season (would be true of any pot this big).

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I wanted to plant two semi-determinate tomatoes of different maturities in this planter, but they were all pretty similar so I planted a Celebrity semi-determinate and an Early Girl indeterminate. They may be too much for the planter's capacity, but after 37 days they're overtopping the original support cage, and tomatoes are starting to appear. I've noticed some roots found their way down into the reservoir; is that supposed to happen? Also, the fill port cover has cracked and it won't stay on for long. These are minor issues if I get a good crop though.

Use these on the deck. This is the Ozarks, it's lovely here, but... no topsoil, we just grow rocks. I am using the long, narrow planters for pepper plants this year. The great aspect of deck gardening is how close an eye you can keep on potential problems with your crop.

Pricey

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

This kit provides everything you need to get started except for the plants or seeds. It is kind of pricey, but it seems to be good quality. It's too early to tell if it works well or not, but it seems sturdy enough to support the vines. There is enough room to grow 2 tomato plants, although they are closely spaced, much more so than if planted in the garden. It could also be used for other climbing plants.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I purchased my first success kit about 5 years ago. Friends commented on what beautiful healthy plants I had growing on my deck. I live in a town with a constant strict watering ban. If we lack rain, my tomatoes in my regular garden produce small few tomatoes. The success kit is easy to keep an eye on, watering is so simple I purchased a 2nd one for myself and one for a relative. The cage will probably wear out before the planter and should be sturdier.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

We bought two of these planters to grow our tomatos for the season. We followed the instructions, which were crystal clear. Set-up was a breeze. We have planted four tomato plants, and all are taking off better than we could have wished. Of course, we will know if these planters are truly successful only when the tomatos start coming and we are able to pick them for our use, but so far, we are extremely pleased with the planters. They are attractive, come with their own "trellis system" and make watering the plants extremely easy. The only con, which we knew going in, is that each container can only hold two good-sized plants.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I tried this last summer and grew cherry tomatoes, basil, and parsley. Basil and tomatoes did exceptionally well. Parsley was ok. I did not have to fill the reservoir very often and the planter never tried out despite a very hot midwestern summer. Our summers were very humid but there was no problem with disease when using this planter. I had more tomatoes (from two plants) than we needed as a family of three (with frequent guests for dinner)and the basil plants thrived. Perhaps the very best aspects are the wheels which mean you can move the planter into the best sun when you want. Its heavy to move but quite easy with the wheels. I love this product. I have bought the replenishing kit this year and hope for similar success.

Having moved 7 yrs ago to Mobile, AL, from PA, we expected warmer weather, but not the problems growing our vegetables - esp tomatoes. After failing with all other methods of planting, this year I tried this planter. A bit expensive, but so are tomatoes! I planted several 4" plants on April 1, and they've taken over; in fact, yesterday (April 21)I even found a 3" tomato growing! If my plants continue to produce so well, I'll probably order more planters next year. Thanks, Gardeners Supply; I've ordered from you for many years, and have never been disappointed!

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I planted my little tomato plants 3 wks ago and so far they are thriving. This kit would be really perfect if it had a built-in rat guard! I planted another tomato plant in my raised bed as a rat sacrificial and it's definitely not growing as quickly as those in the success kits (I splurged on 2 kits). I thought the kits were kind of expensive but now I think they're worth it. Can't wait to grow peas, lettuce, etc. in it in the fall/winter!

We've tried to grow tomatoes for 2 summers. We tried the topsy turvey, we tried containers, etc. Our main problem has been that we couldn't keep the tomatoes watered enough to produce. Because the Texas heat is so fierce in the summer, I have been looking for a system that would allow my tomato plants to get a continuous source of moisture (without my having to water them twice a day). I think this is this answer -- all I do is top off the reservoir in the planter each night, and the tomato plants are thriving. I'm excited for the crop I'm sure I will have!!

I had one friend who grew an entire garden in ONE pot.. tomatoes, peppers, squash, even corn on the cob!! It was a busy bucket but it was amazing watching it grow!

I do use the same soil for 2-3 seasons just refresh it with a lobster and seaweed compost that I get a a local garden center.

This year Im purchasing another for my daughter inlaw who saw them last year and thought I was nuts until she saw how wonderful they grew then wanted one of her own!

I really like the Tomato Success Kit. I am able to plant the tomatoes earlier than if they were in the ground, and the "red mulch" is great. All in all this is a great product. I bought a couple of these three years ago. I live in the hot desert of CA and they are still holding up when other containers are deteriorating. The only part that deteriorates with the hot sun is the watering tube. I just cut the bottom off a water bottle and stuck it in the hole and it works fine. I also bought one for my mother in FL and she loves hers too. I grow lettuce and spinach in it over the winter. Great product.

Best Uses:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I planted a Cinderella's Coach pumpkin and let the vines trail on the ground. I kept the yield down to 3 fruits, the first weighing 38 lbs. I just harvested the second. It weighs between 60 & 70 lbs--my husband had a hard time getting it on the scale, it's that big! 65 inches in circumference, to be exact. The third pumpkin is still on the vine and looks to be about 40 lbs. Pumpkins need lots of water; the containers allow me to give them all the water they need, with none wasted. Next year, I'm going to try an Atlantic Giant--one of the BIG boys! I can hardly wait.

Today I have a jungle growing on my balcony.
This is the most amazing experience.
My tomato garden is all organic. As I explained earlier, I started the seeds indoors in a sprouter and then moved them outdoors in September, merely 5 weeks ago. Now the plants are 4 feet tall and have more flowers than I can count. Yesterday was the day to see the first actual tomato.....
I have 2 planters, one with 2 Rutgers variety(large) and the second one with 4 plants, 2 Rutgers and 2 Brandywine......Perhaps a little crowded, but I will keep you posted.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

My kit arrived too late for planting tomatoes but in time for an early fall crop of lettuces, spinach and arugula so that's what I planted in it. It took a bit of work to get them started but with this great fall weather they took off and are doing great. The planter looks like a jungle of delicious salad greens. YUM!
The only negatives I can think of are, after a while, a mineral crust develops on top of the soil. This is because our water is so hard. I also wish the casters held it up higher so I could put a pan underneath it to catch the overflow.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I tried the tomato success kit for the first time this year because I had had a lot of trouble with various fungus attacks on my tomatoes in the garden. I planted Early Girl tomatoes because they were the recommended variety. I just bought a little 3-pack of tiny plants and put 2 of them into the planter. The garden was not yet prepared for planting the 3rd one, so I tansplanted it to larger pots several times before I could put it into the garden. I am sending a picture of that lone little plant next to the success kit to show the difference in size. I didn't order the cage extension because I figured if I followed the recommendations I wouldn't need it. The tomatoes grew way beyond the top of the cage, so I tied them together with old pantyhose. That helped, but when they got really heavy with tomatoes they still bent down over the top of the cage. I ordered the extension as well as the soil and fertilizer I will need for next year, so I'm ready to go! My daughter also got one of these kits and had other tomatoes planted in a large wooden container. When I was on "watering duty" I went there several times to find the ones in the wood container completely wilted (I thought sure I had killed them!), and the ones in the success kit were just fine. I am very pleased with this product!

Pros:
Attractive Design, Drains Well, Holding Capacity
Best Uses:
Outdoor Plants
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I tried the success kit this summer for the first time. I planted a sungold cherry tomato plant and two bush tomato plants (perhaps a bit too congested) in early June. Nonetheless, the cherry tomato produced 8-9 pints of tasty fruit and the bush plants produced 15-20 medium size tomatoes. The cherry tomato is still producing some ripe fruit late in September. I am sold on the kit and look forward to next summer. Will probably plant sungold again and a red cherry tomato.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I am in a disabled Vet In a wheelchair, I elevate these planters approx. 20 inches. I plant every thing in them from tomatoes to onions. I also plant multiple different veggies in the same planter. In one I have 2 tomatoes, 2 lemon cucumbers and 6 onions and 1 basil. In one of my planters I failed to use the supplied fertilizer, bad move, I ended up with blossom end rot. I have found that using a sprayed on fertilizer worked the best for me. Having purchased 4 with one more ordered I can say I am extremely happy with my purchases and would suggest to all "BUY THEM" maybe help bring the price down. I want 3 more. The ease of assembly is fantastic, even a dummy like me in a wheelchair can put it together. Don't shortcut by not using all of the connectors and always read the all of the instructions.
Thanks Gardners for offering them for sale!!

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I doubt I would have been able to assemble this without my son's help. One of the connectors came off part way through the season. I bought it thinking that my garden soil was affected by blight but the ones in the ground did as well or better. Definitely needs the cage extension. I will try the organic refill next year. I would recommend with reservations.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I already owned three Tomato Success Kits, but I purchased an additional one this year to expand my "deck garden". These pots are great for more vegetables than just tomatoes. While I do have two types of tomatoes growing in these, I also have peppers and cucumbers as well. I love the watering port design improvement. This makes it much easier to determine if you need to add water or not. This is a great product!

we have difficulty with the bending needed to care for a typical garden so we decided to invest in a container garden. I would definitely recommend this system. can't give it five stars yet as the tomatoes and cucumbers haven't fully grown yet!

I am up to 6 of these fantastic containers. Each have 2 tomatoe plants in each of them. I find planting in these I get tomatoes earlier and they are 3Xs bigger than the ones in the ground. My goal is to have all my tomatoes growing out of this container. I would like to say I like the "old" containers better. I like walking by and seeing the little water spiget show me if I need to add water. The new ones you have to look and see if they need water.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I've been using my original set of 2 planters for 5-6 years now. I over-stuff the planters with 4 Sungold cherry tomato plants and get plenty of sweet, golden-orange tomatoes to share with friends and workmates. The plants quickly grow taller than me, are lush and provide some screening on the deck as well. Seriously considering adding a couple more planters next year. Recommend the green planter version, which "disappears" from view once the plants take over.

I love this product. But, have one problem that is not caused by the product but caused by me. I live in South Florida and we plant tomatos in the fall. The fall is also usually a low rain season. When I set this up I did not enable the drainage process, after all, who needs it during our dry season. Well, this season it rained and rained and my planter flooded. I'm getting ready to set it up for this season, but I lost the instructions and do not know what to do to allow it to drain. Can anyone help?

Even with the drainage problem, I love this product.

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I purchased this because I have only a small portion of land to plant vegetables, and I had "worn out my welcome" with the soil. The tomatoes I placed in this pot--with the recommended soil--are at least twice the size as those in the ground. No fruit yet (6.18.10). I also used other containers with the recommended soil and am having similar results, so I'm not sure this container is worth the expense, particularly if you already water regularly, as I do.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

This self watering kit has turned out to be just as it was advertised to be. [...] The instructions were clear and easy to follow. But the most dramatic part is how my tomato plants are responding to the system. I've grown tomatoes for many years in different mediums but never tried something like this before. The growth rate has been unreal. I planted them about 3 weeks ago. I have the planter in a place where it only gets sun from sunrise until about 2:00pm. So if it were to get sun all day, who knows where the plants would be now! I love the watering system. The soil stays moist all of the time and I only need to add water maybe once a week. I live in southeastern Virginia where it is plenty hot and humid. If you're thinking about an easy, low maintenence and guaranteed way of producing great looking tomato plants...look no further!

I did an experiment and used the success kit, grow bags and regular ground for my 6 tomato plants. The 2 in the success kit are 2X as big as those in the grow bags and the ones in the bags are 3X bigger than the ones in the ground. I would call the success kit a success. I would say that the kit is a little to small for 2 plants and a little bigger than needed for one. I would like to see a more appropriate size, but will buy again.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

This is my first foray into using self-watering containers. If this works out well, I'd like to get more to create a little kitchen garden that I can take with me when my husband and I downsize our home. I've only had 2 tomato plants in it for 2 weeks and they are really thriving in there. The surrounding cage adds nice support, but I also added a center stake for each plant. I bought the casters to make it portable and may get things like the table to elevate it or red mulch next year. I think replacements for the plastic clips for the cage assembly would be nice to have available though because they're a bit flimsy and probably won't all last from season to season. Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

Gave two of the Tomato Success Kits to mom for mothers day. She has been growing "jersey" tomatos on the farm and in her garden since she was a child. Now that she is retired and has downsized her garden, these kits will allow her to grow and harvest her tomatos right from her patio. Mom was impressed with the water capacity and ample size of the planters. She has been able to cut her time spent tending the plants in half. She is also imprressed with how fast the tomato plants have been growing in the growing media that was supplied with the kits. Mom is looking forward to an early and easy harvest this year!

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I've been trying to find a usable outdoor "self-watering" planter for patio use for years. I've tried all the major brands, and IMHO they all suffer from the same basic problem: while they may work great under cover or in dry weather, in rainy areas (like Florida in summer) they simply stay too wet. Almost every plant and variety I tried to grow (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, herbs) either died or rapidly showed signs of mineral deficiencies, most likely from root damage in the constantly-soggy mix since fertilizer was added at the recommended rate.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

This is a wonderful product. I bought one last year and it was so successful that I bought another this year. I used the casters, and the planters roll across a bumpy deck with ease. They are easy to fill (and need to be filled once a day), and that easily takes care of the plant's needs. It produced lots of tomatoes last year, but the tomatoes got smaller as the season progressed. I think this was because I planted two tomatoes (a regular and a Roma) in one planter and there was not enough room when they were fully mature. This year I have one plant in each planter and hope to get nice tomatoes the whole season.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I bought the Tomatoe Success Kit because my garden-grown tomatoe plants were susceptible to blight. I now grow two tomatoe plants in the success kit on my back deck and get more tomatoes out of two plants than I ever got out of 6 in the garden. This is my 3rd year using it and it always delivers. Very simple design and doesn't take alot of space. The tomatoes thrive in it. Stongly recommend buying the extension cage to contain the plants to maturity.

I have been using these planters for my tomatos for 5 years now and always get incredibly huge plants. I only put one plant in each one and they grow taller than the caging with the extensions on! The plants become so full and thick that it becomes difficult to see the fruit in the inner areas let alone pick it. I use these kits and supplement the fertilizer with with liquid kelp and fish fertilizer once a week.

This is the best thing I've seen in years. I can't believe how quickly my tomato plants have grown. Of course I've not experienced a full growing season yet so it is too early to rave too much, but I will be surprised if I don't have tomatoes before July 4th...and that's not easy.

I saw a similar planter at the local supply store and examined it carefully, but it doesn't work like yours and I decided to order another one from you rather than try something that might not work as well.

I use this planter on my deck where it is windy, sunny and not much rain falls. The setup was simple, no additional items to purchase except the plants. The ability to use this planter both indoors and out is a plus. The tomatoe cage folds up when you don't need it, and has the ability to get taller if you have plants that need the additional support. I purchased the casters and they work beautifully. Lastly, the water reservoir is excellent - I only have to add water once a week or less.

Bottom Line:

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I bought four of these last year and bought two trolleys as well. Within a week I had purchased two more trolleys. I grew: Arugula, tomatoes, potatos and sugar snap peas and they were all outstanding crops. Very healthy and very easy to maintain in these planters. I enjoy a good vegetable garden but admittedly I am the biggest wimp when it comes to bugs and other garden pests. With these planters I was able to have a season's worth of crops without the pests. I grew them on a deck off my bedroom. The planters were attractive to look at and so it was a pleasure to wake up every morning and check on my "crops"
I can't recommend this kit more strongly. Even though they're designed for tomatos, don't let that advertising fool you -- everything seems to thrive in this little gem.

Comments about Tomato Success Kits:

I'm about to go into season 3 with the kits on my very sunny and hot deck, and the plants have done very well (except for when the hail came). I've just purchased the Summerwright Fabric, which GS says should protect against average hail.

Definitely buy the optional rollers; I didn't the first season and regretted it when I wanted to move the planters around.

The water gauges are very useful (couldn't do without them, really), but the cap to one of ours broke (maybe due to the dry, cold climate)so I don't know if the little water sensor thingies are totally accurate without them. But they seemed to move in response to filling the reservoir.

The red mulch sheets keep the moisture in but cutting them for the plants can be awkward.

Overall, though, a great approach when you can't plant in the bround because of deer and other browsers. :-)
