This is our first year using these planters. At a buy one/get one offer, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try them. We grow many varieties of tomatoes along sturdy wooden frames with cross bars, so my husband was able to hang 4 planters on these bars. They went together easily and, although heavy when filled with soil, we were able to work together to get them hung. So far, our tomatoes look great. We've had so much rain here that we haven't had to water. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 as I'll have to see how the product holds out for the entire growing season.

Built like a tank, mostly. The only questionable part is the clips that hold the cage together, otherwise, this thing is overbuilt, clearly. Holds more medium than a topsy-turvy type, and the self watering mechanism is quite nice. So far, my Roma is doing fine in it. It was easy to fill and it's all going according to plan. We'll see how she holds up towards the end of the season when it's full of tomatos, though..

I had the earlier version of these planters and think the zippered bag and opening cage are a big improvement. One problem is that the hook slots on the bags do not line up correctly with the hook areas on cage -- I used twist ties so the bag was fully open at top instead of being stretched and baggy.

Cons:
Difficult To Assemble, Flimsy
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Revolution Planters, Buy 1, Get 1 Free:

The buttonholes where you attach thefabric to the metal cage are not in the right places or spaced correctly. Also, the unit only comes with one capillary strip and it is sewn in place, but the directions tell you to soak it separately and add it yourself. The directions also indicate that the package has extra capillary strips, mine did not. The directions were very hard to follow. For some reason my shipment came with 2 extra items, self watering conversion kits. These won't even work with the planter.

I had to cut pieces of wire to hold this think together during assembly. The instructions, especially the pictures, were very difficult to follow. My frustration level was extremely high. The watering bag is flimsy and will not hold it shape. Metal or hard p[lastic construction would have been much better. This is my worst buy from you over the years. I think that I will stick with the things that I know from here out.

I am hopeful that the tomatoes will grow. So far they have not grown much. Very difficult to find a place that will support them that the wind cannot blow down. They still get sun, water and a lot of swaying. The holders on the upright support that I bought broke off and they spilled out again. However, the tomatoes were not ruined and I hung them on the fence. Not quite 4 feet off the ground but close. It will be great if they grow. PS: I put some plants in the ground so I can compare later. So far they are about the same except they have not blown down.

I bought two last season, on sale, and two again, this year, also on sale.

Do not pay full price for these planters.

I expected the weight, that's not a problem. Filled them half way, hung them, finished filling them from the ladder.

They are attractive when assembled.
They are much, much more plant-friendly. No smashing the seedlings trying to get them through the ports like with the plastic ones.
Once assembled, they seem rugged enough.

They are difficult to put together. The button holes don't want to line up for the hooks, had to cut a new one in each of the four planters. assembly was an exercise in frustration.

I won't be using the resevoirs, will water them the old fashioned way...with a hose. Seriously, how are two little cappilary strips supposed to keep thirsty tomatoes properly watered?

Overall...I'll use them this year, possibly next, if they don't rot out. If they do, I won't replace them. The assembly woes outweigh the possible benefits.

Easy Easy Easy!

I don't understand the negative comments or bad ratings. I started using the Revolution Planter when I had JUST started out gardening... and had great success. You don't even have to do anything, but plant your tomato and water... that's truly it. I've had no problems with the basket holding the weight (though you do have to be smart enough to install a hook that can hold the weight of a moist basket of soil and a large plant). My plants are always gorgeous, and the tomotoes too. I will only use this planter.

The negative reviews are correct. The fabric literally rotted away after one season, and you cannot keep the earth moist. The wicking system doesn't work. The cheesier-looking ones work much better.

I tried the Revolution Planters for the first time last year mostly to avoid a troublesome groundhog. I built a trellis out of PVC pipe and hung 4 planters. I grew Summer squash, Pole green beans, Cucumbers and Eggplant. I had really good luck with the Cucumbers and the Eggplant. The planters are very heavy when full but to avoid that I will only fill half full before hanging this year. I don't think the sleeve is meant to last more than a year or two. All in all a great product.

Very pleased with overall construction. Wicks lost ability to transfer water, but drilling a small hole in resevour fixed the water problem. Bags rotted out after two years, even though I cleaned them out and hung them inside my garage for the winter. Would like to see replacement bags made available by themselves. Much better than the plastic ones!

Even though I am ordering 2 more of the inserts this year, I feel that I have to in order to get my money's worth out of the product. I have invested in the system, and feel that I need to follow through with it. I am also going to try the newer system this year. The Deluxe Revolution Planter that is in the Outlet Savers part. But this one is defintely not worth the price that it cost to keep it up.

I purchased these instead of the less expensive ones that are made with plastic. The assembly was easy, but it is helpful to have two people for the planting as once filled with dirt they are heavy. I planted an heirloom variety in one bag and a cherry tomato in the other and we ate fresh tomatoes all season! The wells hold a nice amount of water but if the bag is in full sun it will need to be filled daily. Also, I saw on several occasions birds drinking and bathing in the wells so that could explain the loss of water too! (But I was ok with that!) I've given a set to my mom since I loved these so much!

Grew more tomatoes that we could use last season, actually had two of the TV plastic type and two of these and these were the most successful. During hot weather you did have to water more frequently but all in all we truly enjoyed using them. We took down, removed dirt and cleaned after the season and will use again this year. No rotting if taken care of.....Best with smaller variety of tomatoes.

These look good, are easy to assemble and appeared to be rugged

Unfortunately I only got 2 yrs of use out of them then the fabric rotted

If you have no space, try them otherwise plant the old fashion way... in the ground

I was looking forward to using this product but found some negatives right at the start. Once you filled it with soil, it was incredibly heavy! I followed all the directions for watering, but found that it dried out, despite the water reservoir being filled and with fresh wicks. Very dissappointed and definately now worth the money!! Oh, and poor yield!
