Comments about Bean Tower:

It was simple to set up and easy to set in the ground. We get a lot of straight line winds and it hasn't moved. I was worried about this since I didn't get the extra long staples. The beans are already halfway up the tower and doing great. Very attractive and space saving.

Pros:
Compact, Effective
Best Uses:
Vegetable Gardens

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Bean Tower:

This probably works extremely well and is very compact in the garden and to store for winter. I wish the wire material were slightly heavier so the weld points could be heavier. I've used it for one year, and I would expect it to make it through 2-3 more, but had hoped for more. Some of the weld points have come apart, and the weld points are not quite sturdy enough at the start of the season when you need to push the unit it into the soil.

I've never grown more beans in less space, so I will buy one more.

Comments about Bean Tower:

I'm using two of these right now in a raised garden, growing pole beans, and I'm very impressed with these supports! They were very easy to assemble, and they stand up to strong wind! I reinforced them with bamboo stakes because I live in a high-wind area. Well, a few days after putting them up, we had extreme thunderstorms with straight line winds up to 65 mph, but these bean supports held up with no problem at all! I'm excited to watch my beans grow up these poles all summer!

Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Bean Tower:

I have very limited space in my small raised bed gardens so it makes superb sense to go vertical. And having never grown pole beans before, I was anxious for the first harvest from my bean tower. Like a pole bean "high rise" it worked beautifully and we enjoyed a very good yield of easily picked beans. I have since purchased a second bean tower and will be adding to my bean "city" by planting a purple Italian pole bean. The towers are sturdy and go up in seconds. Growing a variety of pole and shell beans in a very small area couldn't be easier!

A little tricky to assemble
By Farming?!? from Virginia on 5/2/2011
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Bean Tower:

To assemble this item you must slot 8 legs into 8 sockets while the two halves flex and shift. It took my husband and I about 5 minutes of fiddling to get it just right. I don't know how someone would assemble this by themselves. Otherwise, it appears that it will do a great job of supporting beans.

Right Height
By TopVerified Purchaser from Otisco, IN on 4/26/2011
Pros:
Simple To Use, Versatile
Cons:
Flimsy
Best Uses:
Vegetable Gardens
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Bean Tower:

Excellent height and wire spacing for multiple use on either beans or tomatoes. Legs seem to function well without additional support, windy conditions may require additional leg support.
Cross joint welds are very weak, the slightest pressure on any weld will break it. At the end of the season I will re-weld every joint, hope they hold that long.

Cons:

Comments about Bean Tower:

Good product but the larger size stresses the limits of the engineering. The corners have a way to fall apart and will require extra bending with a very large wrench. Once bent, the folding is not as practical but trade-offs are trade-offs and good enough does the job.

Comments about Bean Tower:

For years we have used a trellis with poles on each end. As bean plants grew, the trellis would sag or the poles would move. After trying Gardener's Supply's bean trellis this is the only way I will grow beans! I used 2 bean towers and a trellis and the yield was much higher using the towers. It is easier to pick the beans from the towers and they grew larger, healthier, and taller bean stalks. Visitors noticed the bean towers as soon as they stepped in the backyard and were amazed at the bean plants. Next year, more towers, no trellis!

Comments about Bean Tower:

I love the way my tower seems to dominate my garden. I am trying to do as much vertical gardening as I can to maximize my somewhat limited space. I am excited to see how easy or difficult harvesting my beans will be with this type of growing device.
The only adjustment I have done to improve my towers design is add heavy string on each of the four sides to give it more vertical supports to climb since the ones on the tower seemed a little far spaced. Will see if that is an improvement on the existing design.

I have a tomato cage from Gardener's Supply Company and it's been great so I knew a bean tower would be the same quality. It's very durable, more so than any others I've seen. I'm very happy with it! I can't wait to pick beans.

Comments about Bean Tower:

I am trying this as a support for cucumbers, which I usually grow vertically. I think it would be great for beans or peas as well. I like that it fits in a small area of my raised bed - great for small space gardeners. It was a little tricky to unfold it- thought I was going to break it but you just have to pull hard to separate it. Other than that it is great.

Comments about Bean Tower:

I used this bean tower for the first time last summer and really liked the way it worked for me. I used one of your tomato cages to extend the height of the tower and this worked great. We live in a windy area and this bean tower stood up to the wind and remained stable, even with the tomato cage on top and without staples. I'm using this again this year and I plan to buy another, along with some of your other plant supports. I've been VERY pleased with everything I have purchased form your catalog and will continue to add to my gardening collection. Thanks for the wonderful merchandise selection!

Having an extension would be helpful. My bean plants haven grown past the top of each tower. The quality of the structure is similar to the

Comments about Bean Tower:

Grew green beans for two seasons and was very please with the tower. The plants grow up each side and produce lots of beans. Last summer, I had the house painted and one of the painters fell off the ladder, right onto the tower! He was fine but the top of the tower was quite bent. We straightened it out, salvaged the plants, and it produced a good crop. About the only gripe is getting the plants to twine and grow up the tower. I'm thinking about covering the bottom with some netting to get them started.

I don't have a huge garden, so I like to optimize my space. The bean towers save space and also my back as it's so much easier to pick beans standing up. I do find that the initial set up is a bit challenging. It would help to have an extra hand. But it's far from impossible.

Comments about Bean Tower:

I must admit, I was leery about this being sturdy enough to hold up green beans. But when it arrived, the metal was surprisingly thicker than I expected, yet easy to assemble and not heavy. I set two of them up one evening and left them just sitting on the lawn the next day(not pushed into the ground, just standing on top of the grass). A huge storm came through with tornado advisories and fierce winds. The towers remained standing through all of it! I couldn't believe it! I can't wait to see how well they do at the end of the summer once the beans are grown.

Comments about Bean Tower:

I love this product in my home garden so much that I just ordered four sets for our schoolyard vegetable garden (we're starting a project to grow vegetables for the local food bank).

My only complaint -- I usually end up having to add some bamboo poles for extra vining support. The vertical spaces seem to be too wide for the young plants to all find their initial climbing wire. Can these be structured with more supports/smaller spaces? And, of course, using your fertilizer my beans usually outgrow them, so feel free to keep making all your products taller!

Comments about Bean Tower:

I shopped for vegetable supports at several local nurseries, [...] I found nothing locally that approaches the sturdiness and quality of these bean towers. I'm also using the bottom half of a couple of them as tomato cages (because when I finally got around to buying them, Gardners Supply Company was out of stock on the tomato cages). I planted beans and tomatoes and because I don't have good sun exposure, I planted them in 15 gallon nursery containers. More $ than I wanted to pay, but depending on my success in the containers, I may try to grow more vegetables next year; if so, I would definitely purchase additional bean towers if whatever I decide to grow requires the support. My neighbors that have seem them are also impressed.

I bought the bean tower for my small garden space on a "patio home" sized lot. I "planted" the tower in my newly created herb/veggie garden, just in time for one of those huge northeastern storms that came roaring through in early June. While my beans are doing terrible, the tower is standing proud. I didn't even need to straighten it after all of the bad weather! Well worth the investment.

I love these Bean Towers or one could call them Tomato Towers (for the indeterminate type) or Cucumber Towers or Squash Towers and so on. They are the sturdiest support I've found out there and tall enough for most vining veggies. Wish I could afford more of them!

As for storage, they fold flat and take up a very small amount of room.

I actually use this tall support in my front yard in a highly sunny spot behind a small tree, with the foreground blanketed in various-sized perennials. I do my organic gardening right in my front yard. People pass by coming and going to and from the train station and stop and admire my perennials, and they do not even see my organic garden! It is completely hidden. I like the bean support because, while it is sturdy, when covered with growing beans, it is tall, but completely hidden from the street view. My secret garden!

Comments about Bean Tower:

I can't wait to plant my beans! These (I got two) towers were easy to install and they are very sturdy. Not quite decorative looking, but they will be covered by beautiful bean plants soon. I wasn't looking for a decoration anyhow, just something that worked well. I have the lower half in the ground already. As the plants grow I will add the top half as needed. I like how they fold flat for easy storage.

Comments about Bean Tower:

I just purchased this for this season and have planted my grean beans and they are growing up it. It looks like a great product I cant see much wrong with it except heighth. Its in one of my raised beds and it has occured to me that once the grean beans reach the top there might be a problem for me to reach them. I dont see that as being a design flaw in the product as much as my short genes from ancestors. Overall I am very happy I purchased this item.

I planted a recession vegetable garden and have a very small space in which to grow. I built a 4 x 8 foot raised bed and divided it into square feet. I planted 12 pole beans per tower (I bought 2) and am delighted with the appearance and functionality of the structures. In the fall I will use them for snap peas. It is sturdier than any product I've seen of its kind and attractive too!

Comments about Bean Tower:

I have a very small vegetable plot, 12x10, so anything that can grow 'up' is grown on a bean tower. I use them for pole and runner beans, and for climbing zucchini "Tromboncino", and this year for my sugar snap peas. They do a great job, I put a guywire on each one to hold them down in our very persistent hilltop wind, but wish the legs were a little sturdier - they bend far too easily if they hit a stone - in NH we have lots of those. I just purchased my third one, and when the peas have gone by, I will wrap it around the tallest tomatoes for extra support. Good product!

Comments about Bean Tower:

These are utilitarian, not pretty. They're practical. I have successfully used them for indeterminate tomatoes and pole beans; this year I added more for snap peas.

Pole beans: plant one seed at each of the 8 uprights; watch at first because you might have to redirect a plant back to it's support (sometimes one reaches out and finds it's neighbor plant first), but once they've attached, you're done. The most time consuming part of growing beans this way is disposing of the clinging dead vines in the fall.

Indeterminate tomatoes: the towers eliminate the need for training. Plant one plant per tower; you can let more than one vine grow from the base, but then be sure to prune out the suckers or you'll have an impenetrable mess. Also, one year I had 3 of these loaded with tomatoes (and therefore having a high center of gravity) get toppled by a strong autumn wind. My solution is that now I scrunch my tomato towers into a narrowed rhombus (not square), and put 3 of them butting up to each other's corners with the center tower perpendicular to the outer towers. Then I tie the adjacent corners together. The perpendicular center and the shared support keep the towers from toppling. This arrangement also makes reaching tomatoes easier; the narrower cage prevents trapping of tomatoes between heavy vines.

Cons:

Comments about Bean Tower:

The tower is very easy to set up. It's much taller than other products, so the bean plans really take off. The construction is excellent, so the tower is very sturdy. I was tired of messing with netting and poles that were never tall enough anyway, so this was an effective solution. The only con is that it doesn't easily fold flat for storage. But, that one con would not prevent me from buying more bean towers.

This tower is super sturdy and a great design. It is nice to look at and very functional for bean stalks. It even stands up to our sometimes high winds. I love that it can be used in two different heights and doesn't take up much room.

metal bean towers

Pros:
Easy to Store, Simple To Use
Best Uses:
Vegetable Gardens
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Bean Tower:

In past years, I have used wooden stakes (6-7 ft) tied into a teepee. I thought the cages would be easier and might be an improvement to help me reach the beans. Instead, I discovered that birds can perch on the metal bean towers--but not on the 1 inch diameter wooden stakes. So for several WEEKS, the birds were completely pruning all the new ends of my bean plants. I probably won't use the metal towers next year. I'll buy more wooden 1 inch square stakes and tie them into more teepees.

The bean tower supported my beans very well as they grew in a container on my deck. The height made it easy to direct the vines as they grew, and picking the beans is much easier as well.

Somewhat disappointed with this product. The legs are not very sturdy and bent upon trying to push it into the ground. Also, it would be helpful if the cage came apart easily to use in other ways and not just as a square.

Comments about Bean Tower:

I purchased this item so that I could get the most out of a limited garden space. This bean tower is wonderful and holds up to wind. The only thing that I would like would be to have more vertical rods. The bean plants have a tendency to grow on one another because there isn't enough rods to grab.

This product performs exactly as advertised. It's easy to install and break down. The footer-pins could be a little longer for stability, but in rocky soils, this could be a problem. Just use 6" landscape/fabric pins to give it a little more stability.

Comments about Bean Tower:

We have 2 of these. Cucumbers, melons and winter squash do well on it, in addition to beans. Heavy enough to be sturdy without being weighty. Disassembles for easy storage - easier to put into the ground than a single-piece unit as well. There is nothing I dislike about the bean tower. I have very limited space and this lets me rotate my crops easily since I do not have to rely on a permanent trellis location.

Comments about Bean Tower:

This is the third time over 4 years I've ordered a bean tower, the others are all still in use. Although the first one was much more flimsy, it still supported many beans for the last 3 years, now it's in use but set out horizontally to support the peas. The new one has joined the other 2 in supporting beans that just keep producing. This product just keeps getting better and better. Since I grow a small city garden, vertical gardening is the best way to increase my yield. All the supports from Gardener's supply have served me well.

Comments about Bean Tower:

I needed something for my peas to trellis up this spring, and found that the bean tower worked perfectly in my garden. The raised vegetable bed in which I placed it is 2 feet wide, so the bean tower is the perfect dimension. The wide spacing of the grids allow room for legumes to breathe, preventing mildew and disease. My one-year old was easily able to reach through the grids to pick peas all the way on the opposite side of the tower. Since my beans didn't survive a crazy weather June, I currently have the neighboring cucumber plants clambering up the bean tower. It is versatile, sturdy, and easy to use. It even stands up to Texas strength wind and hail storms!
I plan to buy a few more to increase my crop yield!
