I do container gardening and had a 3'-5' containter built to plant my tomatoes and peppers in. I knew I would need a different kind of staking system for them. I knew I could count on Gardener's Supply. They almost always have what I am looking for and a price that I can afford.

Comments about Tomato Ladder Extensions, Set of 3:

I have had the standard ladders for years and loved them but they were not tall enough. It was great to be able to purchase extentions. I bought the red because they were on sale but kinda like the kick of color in the garden. With two sets I can raise 5 standard ladders and still have 2 to combine in to one ladder for a shorter plant!

Comments about Tomato Ladder Extensions, Set of 3:

I drilled holes in my large plastic pots to put the extensions through into the soil. They give me a much more solid base for the ladders plus added height. This is my first year of using the ladders with extensions. The tomatoes are really growing up them quite nicely and are easy to reach for placement. I also like the ladder look versus cages, which is what I have always used in the past. It is great that the sections can also be used for peppers, eggplant or other vegetable support as well.

2010 Summer garden - my tomato plants went to the top of the tomato ladder, back down to ground and sprawled (first year with raised beds). I got the extensions to (try) to keep the tomatoes under better control this upcoming season. Right now, the extension is in place over tomato starts (Southern California - plants can over-winter), and I will see if they are enough next summer.

Original ladder still holding summer tomatoes, so haven't assembled the full ladder yet. The ladders worked- the plants just went wild; I expect the extensions to work equally well.

Comments about Tomato Ladder Extensions, Set of 3:

I am using these for the first time this year with my tomatoes that are in Earth Boxes. I did not put them in the Earth Boxes but in the ground. I thought that they needed to be deeper in the ground to offer more support then to put them in the Earth Box. So far they are working okay, but I think that they would be better for tomatoes planted in the ground. I do think that they are a little pricey. My first set that I ordered had a lot of chips off the paint, but they replaced them for me promptly. I also order the extensions. I think that they are a must.

I HAVE THE LADDERS AND THESE EXTENSIONS WERE A GREAT ADDITION TO THE ORIGINAL LADDER. MY TOMATOES DO NEED THE EXTRA HEIGHT. I DO HAVE ONE COMMENT CONCERNING THE PACKAGING (THIS IS WHY I DIDN'T GIVE THESE 5 STARS). WHY ON EARTH ARE THE LADDERS PACKAGED AS A SET OF 3 WHEN THE ORIGINAL LADDERS ARE PACKAGED AS A SET OF 5? I BOUGHT ONE SET AS I DIDN'T KNOW IF THEY WOULD WORK AND EVEN IF I WENT AND BOUGHT ANOTHER SET, I WOULD HAVE 1 EXTENSION LEFT OVER. I'D HAVE TO HAVE 15 TOMATO LADDERS FOR ME TO HAVE THE EQUIVALENT NUMBER LADDERS AND EXTENSIONS! THIS DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE!

I'd love to know if anyone else has a problem taming their plants. Inspite of the cages and ladders as well as pinching, my tomatoes are gargantuan and seem to sprawl into more space than is supplied by either product. So I am forced to tie and tame more than I think should be necessary. I always grow heirloom organic indeterminate varieties so I understand that some of this is due to that but whoa. No one else seems to have quite the same results.

The one thing I don't like about this product is the fact that the extension cannot be added on at the end but has to be used first. I suppose it is necessary to make the extended tomato ladder more stable. What makes them versatile is that I also use these alone to stake peppers and smaller plants that need significant support. Love having them and keep adding more each season.

Comments about Tomato Ladder Extensions, Set of 3:

I started out with the tomato ladders waiting to see which of my tomato plants needed extensions. When I realized which plants, I ordered the extensions.
BUT reading the instructions to the extensions, they obviously have to be put in the ground before the tomato ladders.
So now I have tall tomatoes. In order to install the extensions, I have to pull the ladders off my tomato plants hoping not to kill them in the process. Then I have to put the extensions in the ground and then put the ladders on top of the extensions.
IF I HAD KNOWN FROM THE BEGINNING THAT THE EXTENSIONS NEED TO GO IN THE GROUND BELOW THE REGULAR LADDERS I WOULD HAVE ORDERED THEM ALL AT THE SAME TIME.
As I mentioned before some my tomato plants are already very tall. I am hoping that I will be able to remove the ladders, install the extensions, and then put the regular ladders on top of the extensions WITHOUT injuring my tomatoes so much they they die off! Grrrrrrr!
I will let you know if my tomatoes survive this trauma. Lotte Weinstein

As a square foot gardener, I find the extensions an absolute must for tall or indeterminate tomatoes. (I use them for my Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes.) They are very easy to install with the tomato ladders - just slide them together. They also help keep my small garden space neat.

The design is great for large tomato plants, the flaw is in the design of the extensions. Extensions must be placed in the ground first, requiring the larger ladder on top. Silly for too many reasons to list here. Obviously not designed by a gardner.

These look really nice in the garden. I just got them this year so I don't know how well they hold up as an extension to the ladders (hence the rating of only 4 stars).

Comments about Tomato Ladder Extensions, Set of 3:

You never know for sure how high the tomatoes will get so just buy several sets of extensions instead of ladders and keep adding them to each other as the plants grow taller. Since the extensions must be on the bottom, removal of the ladder to add an extension later damages the plants and root systems. The cost of two sets of extensions is only a little more than one ladder.

The extensions are really not "extensions" but "bases". Extensions would be added at the top and that would make sense. If they really need to be on the bottom they should be either shipped with the regular ladders or ahead of time. I received them after I had installed the regular ladders and so had to remove them and re-install both. Bad plan.

I bought 10 of the taller tomato ladders 5 years ago(2 sets of 5). Last year I bought 9 extensions (3 sets of 3). Other than the miss match of quantity they're great! Having the extensions makes using my tomato water jackets a lot easier because I no longer have to raise them above my head to remove them once the temp rises in the middle of the summer. I place the extensions and water jackets on Memorial Day when I move my tomatoes outside. Later in the summer simply remove the water jackets then place the original ladders on top of the extensions.

The extensions are terrific. The only problem was I didn't realize that the extensions have to be placed by the tomato plants FIRST, then you attach the ladder. I didn't decide I needed the extension till a few weeks after placing the ladder so I had to remove the ladder from the plant, put the extension by the plant then add the ladder. So order the extension at the same time that you order the ladder and you'll have no problems!

Since the ladders are narrow and encourage upright growth, the extentions provide early support and allow you to continue that support as the plant grows.

Also, I only have 5 ladders and had to buy the extensions in groups of 3....did I lose one or have the goupings changed??? Anyway - so far very happy.

Comments about Tomato Ladder Extensions, Set of 3:

I bought these to add height to the ladders I bought two or three years ago...and I could NOT get them to fit! They were off by perhaps 2 mm but that was enough: the metal is so inflexible that they won't 'give' enough to slide onto all three prongs. However, I took the three extensions and put them on top of each other to give me one more ladder. Perhaps if the ladders and extensions were purchased together they would fit.

Not really extensions, as in adding on - these are *base units* that the full-size ladders fit onto. So you can't start the season with the ladders and add these later. Otherwise, same great value as the ladders.

Nice for indeterminate tomatoes. It is difficult to assemble the extended ladder in place. If adding to used ladders it is important that the legs be clean or there is difficulty getting the legs to seat properly. It would be better if the extension went on top so you did not have to decide placement when the tomatoes are small

Let me say that I love, love, love, the tomato ladders themselves. They are made from a much heavier gage steel than the extensions. I did not use the extensions as extensions. I am using them for my bush beans. I have to say, that I didn't even try them as extensions as I was thrown as to why these would be such a smaller gauge steel. So take my review for what it's worth. They do look nice and will help keep my beans off the ground, so I was not dissappointed.

Let's just say the jury is still out on these ladders. Every year my biggest tomatos grow well beyond the classic cages and make a tomato forest for me to dig through for fruit. The extension design is poor in that you MUST use the them at the BEGINNING of the planting season and AT THE BOTTOM of the ladder instead of adding them as needed to the top. This give you 84 inch ladders on 1 foot plants. It looks silly to say the least. I will reserve the rest of my opinion for the end of this year's season but let's just say they aren't off to a real good start!

It's about time you guys figured out that indeterminate tomato vines can grow over 4 ft (TEASING). I use the 4 ft ones without the extention for my polbano peppers. It's too early just yet to see how they hold up, but they certainly feel sturdy now.
I have made some custom tomato trellises that are even larger and wider than your largest for my most vigorous vines (SuperFantastic, First Lady, etc).
This is truely a great product if you grow 'em big like I do in the Midwest!
The tomato ladders are the source of much garden envy in my community garden plot. I should get a kick-back for recommending them to the other 50 gardeners in the community garden!
Thanks for great industrial-strength tomato products.

I asked and asked for taller tomato ladders since the original ones were not quite tall enough for my out of control tomatoes. These are definitely helping to keep my tomato plants growing up instead of down across the rest of vegetable garden.

Each year we grow lots of tomatoes. I bought the extensions because I already have tomato ladders and thought it would be nice to be able to use them for my indeterminate tomatoes. I expect they will work fine.

Regular ladders that insert are always too short. This should just be a fix until longer ladders are produced.

Comments about Tomato Ladder Extensions, Set of 3:

Thank you for listening to your cutomer's comments! I love the ladder's but most of my tomtoes grew right over the top and then flopped over. I put my plants in on April 1st and it is very easy to slip the wall-o-waters over top of the extensions and then fill them.

These are the first supports I have ever used that really support tall tomato plants.

Comments about Tomato Ladder Extensions, Set of 3:

These add versatility to the standard ladders. (See separate review for those.) It's much easier to have a coordinating extension that works well with a basic product, than having to cobble together a makeshift solution to support a very tall plant, especially one that unexpectedly grows to a great height. These are sturdy and stong--I'll get many years of use from these!

    Ladder Extensions a BIG Disappointment

Comments about Tomato Ladder Extensions, Set of 3:

I purchased regular tomato ladders last year. The ladder "extensions" I purchased this year are much lighter (cheaper) construction, with chipped paint and obvious rust.
