You don't have to live in Australia or California to grow the exotic kiwi fruit, because we've found 'Arctic Beauty,' a Russian native that is hardy to -40°. This beautiful vine loves light shade to full sun, and quickly spreads to cover an arch, trellis or garden wall. In spring, its leaves are strikingly variegated with pink, white and green. The delectable fruit is the size of large grapes, with lime-green flesh and smooth, edible skin.

Comments about Arctic Beauty Kiwi, 2 Plants:

I have patiently waited for the beautiful foliage the Arctic Beauty Kiwi is supposed to display. After 7 years, I only have a handful of white frosted leaves on my 3 plants. The growth is slow to moderate. Without the pink color, this plant is not very attractive.

Comments about Arctic Beauty Kiwi, 2 Plants:

Both plants arrived by UPS/Fedex. I was surprised at how fragil each was. I have planted them along a wire fence, which will provide suppport. Following directions, I placed them in an area that receives a full days sun.

The male plant is doing well. I don't think the female plant will make it even though it received the identical planting soil, fertilizer and water.

Comments about Arctic Beauty Kiwi, 2 Plants:

I know this plant has received some negative reviews, but so far my kiwi vines are doing well. We have had some very strong winds since planting the vines, but have observed no ill effects on them. The male arrived with profuse blossoms, all of which fell off during a brief period of transplant shock, and the pink parts of the leaves turned brown. Both plants now look lush and are growing. I agree with another reviewer that spring is not the best time to be mailing and transplanting these vines, since one tends to lose the blossoms. Overall, very pleased so far.

The kiwi may turn out okay but I was surprised to receive the plants and directions and find that they really needed an arbor to grow into and a southern exposure. I bought them because the description said shade was okay.

Comments about Arctic Beauty Kiwi, 2 Plants:

I purchased this vine because it said it was great in the shade. When I received it the directions said it needed full sun. The spot I had chosen for it wasn't going to work. But I temporarily potted it and watched as all of the leaves died and fell off. I was almost ready to send it back when it started to bud and come back to life. Now I just need to find another location. I am looking forward to tasting this unusual looking fruit.

Comments about Arctic Beauty Kiwi, 2 Plants:

Well, I planted these as soon as they arrived by mail, following the instructions. They are in a sunny spot on the south side of the house, and have a nice trellis to climb. However, we had a coldish snap after I planted them, with temps into the upper 30's, and the leaves are no longer bright green but have darkened considerably. In about four weeks I have no new growth and am concerned that, despite being hardy to well below zero, the plants are on the way out. That would be quite a disappointment. So, hoping for the best...

Although one of the vines arrived broken, I planted it and crossed my fingers. After a short time, a new leaf appeared so I guess it will survive.

Comments about Arctic Beauty Kiwi, 2 Plants:

Didn't realize the amount of space that would be needed to grow these - at least per the instructions. Mine are still small and I hope they keep growing. The catalog says they "love shade", but the instructions received with the plants say they need 12 hours of sunlight, so I'm not sure the spot I planted them will work. Still alive to-date so we'll see if they make it through the summer. I haven't noticed any new growth yet, even though they are supposed to be fast growers.

Comments about Arctic Beauty Kiwi, 2 Plants:

I read the other reviews; The Hardy Kiwi plants are planted in 4' by 2' self-planters with standard potting soil containing moisture fixing granulas. There is an arbor between them for the plants to vine. I do not receive much fruit, but the blooms are lovely and they have created a great entrance to my garden. Their roots have taken over both planters completely. Feed once a year.

Comments about Arctic Beauty Kiwi, 2 Plants:

I had great hopes for the kiwi plant, but both died. I think they need to be planted in the fall, not the spring. I kept them watered, but the severe heat during our drought was probably too much for them. I would try them again in the fall if they are available.

Comments about Arctic Beauty Kiwi, 2 Plants:

I bought the pair of Kiwi and planted them in pots using a mixture of equal parts of top soil, forest compost and amended peat moss, and half a part of sand and set the pots under the Velvet Ash tree in the side yard because the Arizona sun can be quite brutal to recently transplanted plants. They sputtered along for awhile. The male died first, followed by the female. What am I doing wrong?
