Always wanted to try growing mushrooms! It's winter-time here, so great time to 'garden' indoors with a mushroom kit. First crop was 3 meals worth (2 people), 2nd crop, a lb and a half.....3rd crop is growing now. Curiosity satisfied ---and will probably order another kit next winter.

This was our first time growing mushrooms, it was so much fun. We put them in an extra shower that was not being used, where the temperature was ideal and I misted them in the morning and evening so they would not dry out. We could not believe how much they would grow in a day. We have had several crops, and they are still producing. I have sauted them, made soup, and made a wonderful topping for our corn fed beef steaks.

We would definitely recommed growing mushrooms to other customers...it is so much fun!!!

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my husband. We've enjoyed misting the box every day and it has been so exciting to watch the mushrooms grow! Once they fruited, we made the most amazing mushroom sandwiches and even ate a few of them like an apple. Although it's a little pricey as compared to buying them at the store, the whole experience was worth it. It was a great project and fun to watch!

We have followed all the set up and care instructions and have harvested only 4 medium size mushrooms. There does not seem to be any new sprouting activity. Love watching the mushrooms grow, but I really need to know why the casings (?) are all around the edges of the box and not in the middle. The ones on the edges are the size of a pin head, but then turn dark and don't grow. Any explaination on this?

What started out as a joke with my daughter-in-law for Christmas 10 years ago, has become a family tradition. She loves telling people all she gets for Christmas is a box of dirt. They are vegetarians and love the amount of mushrooms they get from the "box of dirt". Kel says you have to be patient when the dirt looks moldy and just leave it be. The one year we had problems gardeners replaced it right away.

Purchased the mushrooms for mother in law this christmas. Box shiped with name of product all over the outside...no surprise if seen! The box was left at our front door, in the snow, we did not discover the box until it sat out all night. The box was to be kept at a warmer temp, until given a xmas. Only one mushroom grew, gee could it be that the box was exposed to 20 degrees over night? She enjoyed growing the one, and ate it promptly when picked. Have wait about 2 mores weeks tending to the box, but no other mushrooms have grown.

I ordered this as a Christmas gift. I had seen it on several other websites and saw the best price on Gardners. I had the package shipped to work which caused excitement among the office with both men and women. Several of my co-workers thought the idea was great and packaged well. The package was a bit heavier then I expected, but it wasn't a burden. Unfortunately I have not sampled the mushrooms yet but am looking forward to it. I'm sure once I get to taste the mushrooms it'll be 5 stars as a rating.

I followed the instructions exactly,took longer than the stated 14 days for the mushrooms to appear, but once they did we had a large hardy harvest. Mushrooms would triple in size everyday. Kept a mister near the mushrooms and misted several times a day to keep the top moist. (I live in a dry climate)

i bought this item with high hopes. we love mushrooms and were totally excited to try the kit. i live in las vegas and i am thinking that the reason mine failed was due to the temperature control. i followed the directions correctly except for the fact it was october and it was averaging about 78 degrees in my house in the cool places. I did buy this product for my dad to try in ohio for christmas. we will see if his works better. i am hopeful since other people on the reviews had great results.

The first round didn't produce much. Only about three mushrooms.

We're now heading into the second and it seems to be producing more. I'm hesitant to blame the kit because I think it may be more related to our watering. We misread the instructions and thought it said water every other day, when it actually said water every other day until fruiting begins and then water every day. So for most of the first fruiting, we were only watering every other day. That probably stunted it a little bit.

It seems like a decent product and the instructions were very thorough, we just misread them. So I'm giving it three stars with the intention of maybe ordering a second kit and giving it another go.

It would have been easier if the temp. and light needs would have been included in the ad. We have to leave them in the living room because of the requirements of light and temp. When I ordered them I thought they would have been OK in a cool, dark storage area...They need filtered light and temp's between 60 and 70 degrees. They are growing just great in the living room. It's our newest conversation subject.

We gave these mushrooms to my brother's family for Christmas 2007. Then we discovered my sister-in-law (a gourmet cook) doesn't like mushrooms. OPS! A month or so later my sister-in-law called for the name of the company where we bought the kit.
