I am disappointed by the yield of this. I followed the directions religiously. I got the white button mushroom kit started the Dec 26. It has been about 7 weeks and I have had 2 harvests. First harvest 5 good sized mushrooms - cap diameter about the size of 50-cent coin. Second harvest(just last week) I got ~8 mushrooms with cap diameter about the size of a quarter. There is a 3rd crop coming of 2 mushrooms - caps about the size of a nickel.

Although I got this kit as a fun present, I am not sure the yield (vs. using the same amount of money in a store purchase of mushrooms) is worth the money

I gave it 2 stars only for the novelty of grow your own mushrooms.

It is possible my experience is a fluke and you will have a more bountiful harvest.

FLIES:
As mentioned in the package instructions, you will get a lot(really) of small black/fruit flies after about 4-5 weeks. Following the kits instructions, I coated the edges of the plastic bag liner with cooking oil. This kind of helped catch the flies a little,. Then I had the idea to loosely close the oil coated plastic and the outer card board box flaps. After giving the semi-closed box a slight shake/jiggle/movement - enough to stir up the flies - I reopened the card board and saw 100+ flies trapped on the plastic(the oil acts as glue to catch the flies).

This is great fun ... growing your own mushrooms. We've really enjoyed watching this go from a box of soil to a thriving mushroom garden. It does not get any fresher than this.

You do need a cool and dark space to grow these though, so keep that in mind before making the investment.

We have had this mushroom kit for a couple of weeks and overnight two mushrooms have popped up. I expect many more to come. It is a fun project, and I think that children would enjoy it too.

I am working on my third harvest. I did not make as many mushrooms as they suggest I would make, but the ones that I did make were huge. All of my mushrooms were the size of Portabella mushrooms. I am not sure what caused this to happen, but my boyfriend was very happy with the results. This product do cause little black flying bugs, but I sprayed a little Pam around the edges of the boxes and they went away (or got stuck to the Pam).

The button mushroom kit has been a fun project. Watching the mushrooms push up out of the dirt, grow to size and then picking our own has been a treat. When I first opened the box the smell of the spores and dirt was a little overpowering, but that soon went away. We've had a lot of fun showing friends our mushroom patch and allowing others to pick a mushroom for the first time. The taste is excellent, the stuffed mushrooms were delicious.

I was leery at first, but after following the instructions, I waited. My first buttons showed up about a week after I started the system. They really came on fast at first (almost too fast). I have taken the ones I could not consume easily at first and dried them in my dehydrator, and put them away. They taste great!

This is a great item. The instructions are very easy to understand. I got mine set up and have had two crops of mushrooms. They taste a lot better than the one you get at the grocery; mainly because they are as fresh as you can get. I plan on ordering additional boxes as this one winds down producing. Bought this as a Christmas gift for my folks (they are the master gardeners, not me!) who just downsized to a townhome with a tiny yard and certainly don't need gifts of more stuff or high calorie snacks. This fit the bill perfectly. They followed the instructions exactly and are on their third crop of mushrooms! I gave this as a gift to my father. He started it the day after Christmas and he harvested his first crop yesterday (1/15/10). Yum!! These are the best button mushrooms we've ever had. Since the are so fresh they had more moisture content so needed to be sauted a little longer, but well worth the wait!

I hate mushrooms but I buy these mushroom kits every year for my "hard-to-buy-for" father who is an old Italian gardener. My dad goes for walks in the woods to find mushrooms during the late summer and early fall so this is a perfect hobby gift for him during the winter. My father has asked me to get him this for Christmas for the last five Christmases in a row! He loves to putter, and he keeps these mushrooms in his dark, warm, moist laundry room. He and the four grandkids go down together to spritz them with water each day, and they have an endless winter harvest. We now give him recipe books with the kit, as well as red wine and garlic to saute' them! Grandkids are now all converted to fungi eaters! I tried to order these cheaper one year from a science project company, but Dad was very disappointed at the yield. These are the best kits! Some years are better than others, but generally they are very good, healthy fun.

These grew great despite less than ideal circumstances. Got them for Christmas and didn't start for nearly two months-past it's best start by date. My 8-year old gardening helper way overwatered these the first couple of weeks and I was worried the spores would be washed away. They were a little slow to start (I believe) because of this but once they began producing they went to town, producing a very firm, fresh (slightly sweet) tasting mushroom. I also only got two crops again probably due to less than ideal conditions.

The only downside was having to store the box before I could start it - fortunately it was winter and the garage was cool enough - if not too cold. For growing the only suitable place was the extra bathtub as they need 65-70 F temps - something I didn't see on the website prior to purchasing.

Mushrooms didn't appear until 21 days, although I followed the instructions exactly but also kept the kit at the low temperature range initially. Growth and regrowth occurred quicker when I moved the kit into a smaller, darker room with higher temperature (70 °F) and humidity.

The mushrooms were delicious and plentiful with multiple batches over two months.

The kit is overpriced by $10 to $15. It should sell for $25 to $30.

The white mushroom kit was one of the best presents that my husband received for Christmas!!! Everything needed to grow the 'rooms came in the the box!!! We kept a photo log of the growth of the mushrooms for fun!!! It was truly amazing to watch them "sprout" and get bigger each day!!!! We were also able to explain how a fungus grows to our daughter using this kit. But the best thing about the kit was eating the mushrooms!!!! They tasted so much better than the store bought variety and were definitely firmer, too. Unfortunately, we only got about 3 harvests of mushrooms out of the kit. We really wished it could have continued to produce mushrooms for months, but it didn't. The growth medium is now happily feeding our summer 4X4 foot garden.

Bought this kit for my mother at Christmas 3 years ago, and she has requested one every year since! You get about 3 or 4 good crops to pick and about 1-2 pounds out of each crop. Not too fussy, just mist with a water sprayer every day and they pop up! Totally the best gift ever, and FUN! Great to grow something you can eat in the long Michigan Winter! Truely a great concept and a fabulous product. Perfect results every time I have given about 6 away over the past 4 or 5 years. Only time it didnt work was my mother in law, because she didnt read the instructions and do it, but that was her fault. My mom was so mad! LOL

I've had good results with other mushroom kits, but not with the Mushroom Adventures ones. This one gave me very few mushrooms. A lot of them got to button size and then died. I followed the instructions, and I've had mushroom kits before, but for the number of edible mushrooms I received, this one isn't worth the money.

This was not the best christmas gift idea. I bought it in late November and it did not get opened until January 3rd. The instructions were followed but it did not produce many mushrooms. It also dried out quickly and was hard to keep moist. Maybe we just don't have a green thumb for mushrooms.
