The Cape Cod Firestarter is a piece of Yankee ingenuity from the days when wood fires were a necessity. Simply fill the cast iron pot half way with (sold separately) and let the pumice stone soak. When lit, it will burn for about ten minutes — plenty of time for the fire to get going without kindling or newspaper. Works the first time, every time. Great for charcoal cooking, too.

We have a wood burning stove which we sometimes fight lighting so I thought this would be a great solution. Unfortunately, ours had a leak and we ended up with lamp oil in many places we did not want it. We also had a hard time storing the wand after using it in the fire place as it was hot and potentially oily. I was really hoping it would work out.
Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
It is great to just put the wood in the woodburning stove and light the cape cod fire starter and shortly I have a roaring fire. I don't have to keep newspaper around to start the fire, it is easy and effective. I have given it as a gift a couple of times and people love it as well.

This make starting the fire so easy on a rainy snowy day! You don't have to hunt for kindling!

I bought this item as a gift for someone who actually has a 'real' fireplace. Hard to find these days!
Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
I have used wood as a source of heat for 20 yrs. This thing is useless. Got more lamp oil on the stove trying to get it from the pot in to the firebox. Never did get the pumice stone to light after soaking it in the oil for 2 days. In fact had to get the thing out of the way to start the fire.
Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
Leave it to the New Englanders to think this up. It's great ! No more parrafin wax starters needed when you use the cape cod starter. I liked it so much, I bought two.
Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
Received as gift some years ago. Works GREAT if we allow stone to soak up oil overnight AND allow it to drip oil onto logs for 2 minutes or so before lighting. That allows oil in stone to begin to vaporize so stone surface lights more easily. Then we position burning stone under kindling and soon have a roaring fire. As others have said, move stone and handle off to the side after it has done its job or handle will melt/distort.

I love a nice roaring fire but I don't like a lot of ash/paper burning methods to start the fire. This fire starter is perfect. Even my 13 year old son can safely start the fire. No kindling or paper needed to produce a warm and cozy fire within 5 minutes.

Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
Being from New England originally, had to try this for our fireplace. Just ordered our third Cape Cod Lighter -- the rods will not last if you don't remove them from the embers once the stone is no longer flaming -- melted the rod on the first so the area that held the stone broke off. Our second one had the stone split in half -- the stone is fragile, so don't drop it on your hearth -- Still using the original replacement pot -- but do check for leaks - our first one leaked and was replaced. Have used this method of lighting our fireplace for over 12 years and just started our third stone, so two in 12 years isn't bad. Would be nice if just the rod/stone was available for separate purchase.

Surprised by how sturdy the item was. It is pretty heavy for such a little thing.

This makes fire starting soooo simple and easy. I used to dread starting the fire, but now it is a snap.

I like the idea that I only have to have lamp oil to start a fire. No more expensive, heavy boxes of firestarters for me!

This does burn longer than newspaper, but we still have to use newspaper to start the fire. This alone just doesn't cut it.

I was thrilled to see this in the book, hoping to eliminate the firestarter logs. We let it soak 2 hrs, then overnite. No results. Disappointed

Don't send a man to do a woman's job! I tried this today, disappointed after having to write a negative review with all the positive purchases I have had with Gardner's. This works! and it works well. No, it is not automatic. It takes about 30 seconds holding the lighter to the stone. Yippeee!!!

Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
The Cape Cod Fire Starter looks nice sitting on my hearth, but I could never get it to burn. As per the instructions, I soaked it in the pot of oil for more than the required time. I used the oil that was shown as a link on the website, so I know that wasn't the problem. I thought the stone would ignite immediately, but I had to hold a match to it for more than a minute to even get it to catch fire. Then it would only burn for a couple minutes--not enough time for my wood to catch fire. I've tried it several times, but it simply would not work for me.

Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
This has been a time and money saver to us. My husband was using a propane torch to light fires which takes time and expensive. Now he just lights the stone which was in the lamp oil, places it in the wood stove and removes it when the wood catches. The only thing different he had to do is create a way for the wood to be lifted for the stone to go beneath it.

Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
Great idea however, I think that the convenience of taking it in and out of the fireplace area was not what I expected
Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
The Cape Cod Fire Starter is quicker, cleaner and safer than other alternatives. No paper or kindling to store or mess with
Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
I love this little iron pot! Its cute compact design is so much nicer than a pile of twigs and newspapers and it really works! The only cons are: 1)I'd love to display it but you can not keep/store it near the fireplace when it's filled with oil - it should be outside or in a garage, and 2) the lid does not fit very securely. Otherwise, it's a very nice item that works as advertised. I would recommend to anyone!

Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
Have been starting stove fires for years. Have not once been successful with this in the two months I've owned it. Possibly the lamp oil doesn't burn hot enough to start the logs. Would love to return it but since it has held a flammable substance, don't think I can send it through the mail.

Used to take me forever to build a fire. Now I just place the pumice stone under the grate and I have a fire in no time. Easy, efficient and much cleaner than newspaper and kindling.

Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
I loved the looks of the cape cod fire starter but the pumice stone would go out and it never caught my dry wood on fire. It caught my kindling on fire but I bought it so I would not have to use kindling. I was sorry it didn't work because it sounded like a great idea. I returned this purchase.

Comments about Cape Cod Fire Starter:
This pot is charming sitting on my hearth. Just wish it was a little bit larger, but that's for decorative purposes only. The stone absorbs enough oil to start the fire.

We found this an efficient, effective way to get the fire started. Not for use in houses with pets or kids. Safe if used properly.WARNING: DO NOT MAKE MISTAKE OF IMMERSING WARM STARTER BOB INTO LAMP OIL - FLASH FIRE RESULTS.

The fire starter is just a little small. It looks bigger in the picture. I think it would be more attractive if it were bigger.
