No skills what-so-ever as a gardener, but my 5 year old wanted to grow some plants. This starter kit was super easy and fun. Everything we tried started very quickly (in a couple days for some). This made it a huge hit with the kiddos. We are now buying the grow beds to try and move the plants outside.

I decided to do my own tomatoes & broccoli by seed this year, plus some easier ones for more control to stagger harvest time. So far, everything is sprouting and doing well. The 24 APS starter kit made it super simple to monitor and keep moist. I didn't want a high maintenance system and this has been perfect so far.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I have experimented this year with similar products from other garden stores. I find the APS starter kits more sturdy. It does happen that I need to move the trays when they are still quite full with water. The material design of the APS trays allows me to do this quite easily without making a mess. The other systems I have are too flimsy to move when they have water in them and are difficult to move.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I've used and reused my seed starting kits over the years -- seeds always sprout; I've never had a problem with damping off. My only complaint are the thin plastic reservoirs -- my dim memory of the original design (long, long ago) is that it had styrofoam reservoirs that held heat better and were easier to move around.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I use this kit for starting all sorts of seeds. So far I haven't been disappointed starting everything from lettuce, to petunias, to winter squash in it. The seeds all stay just at the right moisture level and the clear cover keeps them from drying out until they are well sprouted. Unfortunately, I received the Organic germinating mix with this kit. I am disappointed by the fact that the mix is FULL of twigs. They don't seem to affect the germinating ability of the mix - all my seedlings sprouted in record time - but I couldn't help feeling just a little ripped off by all the twigs in the mix.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

It is the best, most forgiving way to start seeds. Even a beginner will experience nearly 100% success. The cover helps to keep seeds moist until germination. The self-watering features buys you time throughout the week, letting you travel for a few days or forgiving you if you forget to water. Being able to walk by the water level indicator and see at glance if water is needed is a real time saving convenience. The system with it's pop out feature is great for minimally disturbing the root system and lifts the plug out of the container so efficiently that you are not tempted to lift your plant by the stem and therefore are less likely to damage the vascular system, making planting a success, too. The fact that you can buy replacement water wicking mats means that you can use the APS system for years and will rediscover it's great design year after year. My APS took me from a beginner gardener to a master gardener.
The only thing I wish is that it were made out of a hard dishwasher safe material.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

This is a great design the matting work just as advertised. The gardeners potting is a great mix that really holds the water. The material does not float up very much at all like some of the competitions seedling mix.
The Styrofoam is not the strongest I have used but so far only a little flaking. I am a bit nervous about how long it will last.
Nearly 100% success with germination and the fertilizer is a great product as well. I am very happy with the products so far.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I've tried a lot of seedstarting trays, and this one works the best of all of them. The wicking mat means there's no guess work about watering. It delivers just the right amount of water to the plants. And the cells are sturdy enough that you can re-use them year after year - other trays are such flimsy plastic that they crust when you take the plants out.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I start my vegetables (tomatoes, cantaloupe primarily) and flowering annuals from seed each spring, it's very easy using the APS system; the clear dome lets in light and keeps in humidity. The wicking material does tend to get a little moldy, washing it with bleach takes care of that.I would not go back to seed-starting without the APS!

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I bought this kit because I wanted to start growing a vegetable garden. I was thrilled with it, it works great! I didn't have to fuss over the seedlings, and they grew very well. The soil is high quality. I let my seedlings go too long, and had to rip their roots out of the capillary mat, so keep an eye out for root progress. Overall, I feel that buying the APS Starter Kit was a wise investment for my garden.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

To get started with this product it suggests you initially water from the bottom and the top to get the wicking action going. This was very messy and did not work well. My first time using it. One set of seeds out of a 24 pack only half germinated and a second set only 2 germinated. I am trying again though as I am new to this.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

This was my first attempt at growing seeds indoors this winter. It was not great. The APS starter got everything to sprout, but it delivers so much water, it killed every zinnia zeed I planted in about 14 days. My hollyhock seeds did fairly well about 3/4 lived, but few made it through the transplant stage when I put them in the ground. My rudbeckias 3/4 sprouted, none survived transplant. I tried putting this in direct southern sun for 5-6 hours a day to dry out the soil but that did not work. I will try this again next winter but use a mister bottle rather than the capillary mat which I believe is to blame. I would not recommend this for seeds that are slightly xeric like zinnias or cosmos and use caution when removing the soil for transplant as it is so wet is often falls apart and your seedlings roots get exposed and suffer and I would not recommend anyone use the capillary mat-water the soil as appropriate instead you will do better.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

The basic design of the water reservoir and capillary mat is great. As long as you remember to top up the water every few days, everything stays just right -- not too dry and not too damp. I have had very high levels of germination with my three trees.

The only issue I have run into is with the clear plastic covers. I left mine in the sun and they deformed and are now useless. Too bad, as I think they are important for the first week or so.

Still, a great product. Haven't seen anything better for seed starting.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

The potting system was simple and made seed starting quite easy. The mat, greenhouse lid and water gauge helped to keep the soil evenly moist which helped to germinate the seeds. The Styrofoam base has a grid to help pop out the plants when it is time to transplant them; couldn't be easier.
The system, overall, is pretty sturdy and should hold up for many years with reasonable care.
I highly recommend this all in one system to all gardeners and am planning on purchasing additional ones' in the future.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

My 2 young grandchildren and I did the first planting in our new containers, and they just loved doing it. It is really fun to do!

I am new at this and used heirloom seeds, so I could save my own seeds from year to year. I was surprised that the cabbage sprouted in 3 days and looks very spindly. The tomatoes look much better, but there is a bit of mold on the surface of the soil on that tray. I wonder if there is too much moisture. Should I let them dry out for a few days? We have had a cold spring in Minnesota, and they were in the house on a table at the south window for the first few weeks. I have had them outside twice to acclimate them to wind and sun.

Growing 48 seeds into starts each year enables me to experiment with the incredible array of vegetables and flowers available only in seed form. Most nursery and big box veggie and plant starts are not from heirloom seeds, not organic, and mass produced. Hardly bio-diversifed.Growing from seed with this seed starter kit enables a gardener to make their landscape and gardening intensely personal and fulfilling.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I've read rave reviews about the APS system, and I was not disappointed when I bought it. It holds moisture and temperature levels very nicely. I've successfully started lettuce, kale, and chard so far. When it is time to transplant the seedlings, they pop out cleanly in nice little plugs. The only possible downside is that I could see how the rigid foam material could be accidentally damaged, although so far it's held up through 2 seeding cycles.

I re-use it over and over, and of course the styrofoam detiorates in time. When a piece breaks off, I just glue it back together or glue a stiff piece of plastic where it broke off. I think the fertilizer is just fantastic. I have to bleach the mats after use, but that is ok with me.

This is the right design for starting. Over the years my various DIY approachs have resulted in some major botchs. This time I did not want another lean year for my hard-to-start plants. The important thing for me is water management. This set-up is doing the moisture thing - just right.

Nice if a warming mat like alternative were included in the package. But, I am not sure how that would work. not under the water tray, so???

The design of the watering system is excellent. I purchased the 24 size.

My problem is that I need only 2 or 3 seedling of each type of vegetable. This has not worked well, because of the differing germination times. I now have seedling ranging from very long leggy weak-looking ones to ones--like peppers-- that have not yet broken the soil. Buying the smaller APS would still raise the same problem.

The seed starting medium and the transplant mix are the best I've ever used. I think I've been ordering this for at least 10 years. The APS systems really do get plants off to a great start. My bigest problem with them is that things are going so well with my seedlings that I, after a while don't check them as often and find that they have grown too large. I would recommend these to everyone, beginner thru master.

This Starter Kit has everything you need for your seeds or transplants. The self watering ability of this kit keeps me from over-watering and insures the plants get just the right amount which keeps me from "over loving" (too much water) my little seedlings. Guessing isn't needed any more, just fill the water holding tank. The plants grow faster, larger and stronger using this kit with greater germination of seeds.

I've been germinating some vegetables for about 3 weeks now and they are effort-less. The plastic covers are even good at preventing water evaporation and the soil stays constantly saturated. As for the mold that some people have claimed to have (though most say it doesn't inhibit germination), i have experienced none.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

This is a wonderful seed starting set up. The only odd thing about it was that the soil tended to get a green layer on top. Like mildew looking stuff. However, it didn't seem to affect the growth of anything. So it looked kinda nasty, but the system works great. The plastic top was the perfect height for being able to put my lights close enough. Easy to remove the plants when you're ready for your first transplant. I really like this system. Much better than just using a flat with plastic wrap over the top to start seeds. Soil stays moist with the wicking mat and the water level indicator lets you know when to add more water. Be careful to use seeds with close proximity in germination time.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I was not blessed with my mother's green thumb, but this comes close to it. I've always had difficulty keeping seedlings getting to maturity, but this kit was so easy to use. Soil, seeds, water... and all I had to do was watch my seedlings grow. I had so much success I was giving them away to coworkers. Now we have a small farmers market at the office!

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I thought the APS seed starter kit was one of the easiest seed starting products I have ever used - No damping off on my seedlings - no watering worries.
However , keep the it out of the direct summer sun, with the clear platic dome on, my tops warped and the bottom "melted"

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I love this product. I don't think there is a better way to germinate seeds. I get almost a 100% return on the seeds that I plant in this. I really like the water level indicator. I do wish the bottom tray and the styrofoam part where you actually start the seeds could somehow be stronger. Otherwise, it is great!

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I started my vegetable seeds in the APS starter kit. Every year I try a different method and this kit is by far the easiest and most successful experience to date. I am busy and often forget to keep my seedlings evenly moist. This kit takes the guess work and 'babysitting' out of it. The only drawback is when transplanting, you must not hold the seed tray wrong or you will snap the styrofoam, as it is thin between each cell. With that lesson learned, I will be using this kit year after year!

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I am very happy with the APS system - I've used it for three years now (and have four of them). Overall, it's a great way to start healthy seedlings. My only complaint is that if not handled carefully (and I'm not the most careful handler) pieces of the styrofoam can break off. So use both hands when lifting the tray when it is full.

Cons:
Flimsy, Styrofoam inserts awkward
Best Uses:

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I love this system, but made modifications this year. I find the styrofoam grid to be a bit flimsy and awkward to use. This year I used biodegradable pots in place of the grid. It would be great if you could offer bio-pots that fit this system. Mine weren't an exact fit, so I had to squeeze them together a bit. Much less root disturbance/exposure for my tomatoes when I can plant them pot and all.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I haven't had much luck starting seeds indoors to extend my outdoor growing season. With the starter kit, all but two of the planted seeds grew and thrived, giving me a great start on my garden. Even better, the starter kit provided everything I needed--including the "controlled" environment covering--so all I had to do was water.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

Thought this would be a good product for early starting of our tomato plants. It was easy to set up, my 9 yr old daughter was interesed and helped a lot. However, although we used high quality/organic seeds in reality very few germinated. For those that did you need to transplant quickly, because does not have enough room to develop solid root system. Materials of the system did hold up well. Will try again next year.

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

I used this product to start some of my seedlings this year. The seedlings started in the APS tray grew very well and were very easy to remove for transplant into larger pots when the time came. Once I filled the water chamber, it basically took care of itself for a week at a time! The only challenge was filling the water chamber without spilling, but a long spouted water can will do the trick! I would recommend this to anyone and plant to buy another one next year so I can do more of my seedlings this way.

By DonnaVerified Purchaser from Westchester, New York on 7/8/2008
Pros:
Durable, Easy To Use, Lightweight, Versatile
Best Uses:
Garden
Describe Yourself:
Bargain Hunter, Practical, Stylish

Comments about APS Starter Kit:

Not all seeds germinated at the same rate. Some germinated quickly, getting too tall for the cover. That required removing the top. I think that slowed the other seeds. About 40% did not grow. I reseeded some cubes 3 times. The soil stayed moist as advertised, but I think that spoiled some of the cubes that did not germinate quickly. Several never germinated. I found fungus growing on the seeds. The plants never really developed good root grow until I transfered them to other pots or in the ground.
Otherwise fun to use and I will try it again next spring.
