Humans can definitely smell the garlic as well. Both pro and con are that you do have to re-locate the clips as you prune the roses. Careful not to prune and toss the clips! For two weeks now, the deer have stayed away. Hopefully the clips' effectiveness will last the 4+ months that are advertised, as they are a little pricey.

This was recommended to me by a friend with deer problems in Massachusetts. I live in Virginia, and have found that, so far, deer have not eaten those plants with a garlic clip nearby. Seems almost too easy and good to be true. We'll see how it holds up over time. Winter will be a real challenge, as the deer don't have so many options for food.

I started using this product in January in Iowa with 3 feet of snow on the ground. The deer were digging through the snow to eat my shrubs. Every summer we have put up electric fence around our vegetable garden to keep the deer away. This year, I tried the garlic clips and was amazed that the deer actually came into the garden (We saw their hoof prints), but they did not eat the beans nor the tomatoes which seemed to be their favorite in years gone by! I made the purchase, based on the many "good reviews", after my long-time struggle to outwit the many deer in my subdivision which is less than 1/2 mile from the physical Colonial Capital building itself. I even attached some of the clips to the 4 ft. iron gate into the backyard and the deer just jumped over the gate as tho' there were no clips there. Great because you clip them on to any plant that the deer eat and they bypass the plant. Lasts for 3 months or more and doesn't wash off in a rain like messy sprays that require special equipment and masks.
The garlic oil can get on your hands but it doesn't burn. Just wash your hands and pick a stainless steel spoon out of your kitchen drawer and rub your fingers on it to take away the smell.

First two packages I bought worked great and are still working, but this third package well, let's put it this way the deer ignored the clips and started eating at my rose bushes. I applied 6 to this one bush in particular and the deer must have a taste for pesto, either that or they were in storage too long and lost their potency. Last summer I attached these to the plants the deer like most. I also sprayed a deer deterrent frequently, so I wasn't sure which item was keeping the deer away. This spring while cleaning up the garden I found a about six of these that spent the winter outdoors, and I popped them in my pocket thinking they were no longer useful. (They don't have a strong smell even when new) Without thinking I washed those pants with the clips still inside the pocket. We often had problems with the deer eating our hostas as if they were "salad" before their main meal (or maybe as their main meal). We had tried the sprays, but the deer were always quicker than we were with respect to re-applying - especially after a rain. These clips are the BEST!! I tell everyone I know that they are worth every penny. I place them on once the hostas begin to grow and the leaves cover the clips nicely as the plants mature. I put them on in the beginning of the season and they last all summer long!!! Easy, not messy, not smelly (except to the deer) and work wonderfully!!! Yes we feed the deer pellets in the winter - we have a deer "yard" in the woods behind our home. But when they invite themselves to dinner with hostas and rhodies as their main course during the spring it's all out war. I read other reviews from customers about this product and decided to try it. I've used this product for several years. I like the fact that you can put them where you want and don't have to reapply like other repellents. They last all summer. I've had great luck with these at my home, but when I've used these at my work where I tend a garden, they didn't seem to work very well. Nothing seems to keep these city deer away! Deer like to nibble on my tomato plants. Anything that grows outside the tomato cage. I now attach these clips to my tomato cages, and no more nibbling deer. To protect other plants, I put a small wire stake in the ground, similar to irrigation flags, and attach the clips to the stake/flags. I dispersed four flags among my 25 foot row of beans and.... Thanks to the garlic clips I have plants blooming in my garden that never get to grow because the rabbits eat them. These clips are 98% effective. This is the second set we've purchased, and they really seem to keep the predation down. We've used them for everything from deer to chipmunks. Chipmunks develop a love of our tomatoes, and clipping these to the trellis ends their feasting within a day. We also push them into the ground around perennials and clip them to branches of trees to discourage deer browsing, and we've noticed far less damage. They last for most of the summer, although birds will sometimes pull them out of the ground for some reason. It's easy to break the plastic seal with the included poker, and the little lid does a good job of keeping the rain out.

I attached the garlic clips to ~18-inch bamboo sticks throughout my flower garden. That same day the deer quit eating my flowers and have not returned. The deer now watch me from afar when I work my beds.

When putting out the clips, you might want to wear gloves to avoid getting the garlic oil on your hands. The garlic smell is potent.

I bought these for more mother who was having trouble with deer raiding her garden, since it's right up against out back woods. These seem to work well -- I had no deer damage to my hosta last year. I put one on each hosta, two on the big hosta. They are a lot easier than the spray-on deer repellants. The sprays are supposed to last a month, but if it rains a lot, they don't last that long. These clips turned out to be less expensive also, because I only had to buy them once and they lasted all season. The odor doesn't bother me, but I like garlic, so that may make a difference.

These clips are the best ! Because I deliberately feed the wildlife around here, and because both the rabbits and the chipmunks seem to be fond of my lilies (salad course ?, these clips let them know what not to eat. The clips are very effective, last all season and are unobtrusive. Also, I can't imagine garlic oil being harmful to the environment, so I feel comfortable placing the clips around the lilies.

The garlic clips have protected my rose bushes and fruit trees and azaleas from hungry deer.
Do be sure to wear gloves when using the tool to activate(ie. put hole in top of clip to let scent out)...otherwise you might have garlic smelling hands. Effective tool lasts longer than the spray on repellents...though I use the spray on for my hosta.

Live in an area of WY that subjects me to 10-20 deer per day in my yard. They eat my bushes & flowers when forage becomes scarce. These garlic clips literally stopped them in their tracks and they have not become accustomed to it like other products. I just love these things! My wife is a great gardener- who likes Roses especially. Unfortunately the many Deer in our area do too. I have been buying garlic clips for serveral years now and find them to be very effective in preventing deer and rabbits from lunching on my plants. They are easier to use than sprays, convenient to store and have on hand, and not at all messy. The odor is not noticable to humans. I replace mine about every 4 months. Squirrels and chipmunks were deterred quickly. I'm waiting until winter to see if they keep rabbits away from the bushes. The rabbits are definitely the major winter problem. This was a god send! I have tried many other products and was actually at the point of considering a new fence when I saw this product. The problem with other products is that you have to re-apply them after it rains (and it rains a lot here). I had three clips on my hydrangeas, and the deer chomped anyway; however, the clips I applied to my seedums appear to have sent the bunnies looking elsewhere. I am also buying the Deer Fortress from gardeners.com in my ongoing attact to save my plants from nibblers.

I tried the garlic clips in my garden and they did not work. The rabbits walked by them like they weren't even there. I used several on my green beans, and the rabbits ate them to the ground, along with my peas and cucumber plants.

During the winter before last all my bushes got chewed up by the deer. This last winter in bought these Garlic Clips and I put one in each bush in November. One bush got chewed on just a bit. None of the others were bothered. The clips seemed to last all winter. I'm very pleased with them and I will be buying more for this next winter. They worked where nothing else ever has. I would highly recommend them and have to my friends.

Last year most of our herbs and tomatos got eaten by deer.

This year we have had great success using one of these on each tomato plant in the raised garden bed.
We put the plants in at the end of may, and not a much has been taken.

Purchased to keep the deer and rabbits from my garden. I have many many deer that come into my yard. I still have seen deer standing in middle of flower bed, and have flowers with the heads eaten, but not nearly as many as last year. Although Rhododendron bloomed this year? Jury is still out of this product.

Used to stop rabbits from eating flowers and other plants. Clips protected the individual stem where it was placed. Protecting whole plant would have meant using one on every branch. The flower was safe but all the leaves were eaten.

Scared the bunnies off the hosta that they had chewed to the ground. Later used it on pansies with the same results. It's a good thing I like the smell of garlic.

I just stuck down in the dirt in my flower gardens all around my yard to keep those bunnies out
