Potato Grow Bags not just for potatoes
By Kay from Trenton, Illinois on 6/6/2011
Pros:
Drains Well, Holding Capacity, Our potatoes in the grow, Sturdy, Weather Resistant
Cons:
Heavy / Bulky
Best Uses:
Outdoor Plants
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

These grow bags are amazing. They drain so well that our potatoes in them are twice as large as the ones we put in the ground. Many in the ground rotted in the heavier than usual spring rains.

Our tomatoes in the bags already have small blooms amd fruit on them while those in the ground
are just now blooming.

We purchased bags for each of our adult children
who can move them about their small landscapes in the city. They like them as well.

I really like the jumbo potato bags. You can fit a lot more potato seeds in them. I ordered the regular size last year and they are still good this year. The fabric is really holding up well.

I just love Gardeners Supply! You sell the greatest products that I can't find anywhere locally.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

On the clay-heavy East Hills of Silicon Valley, it's been an uphill struggle to condition the soil. I'm now doing lasagna-beds and raised beds. This is my first Grow Sack and so far it's working as advertised and I have Adirondack Blues already appearing.

One unexpected benefit: The relatively flimsy *feeling* bag is unattractive to stray cats, unlike neatly mulched raised beds!

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

The larger size gives lots of room. I've got 8 fingerling potato plants coming up in one bag. We leveled on some heavy wooden flats we happened to have. It allows a 6 inch space for air to flow thru and water to drip out. The potatoes started up in just a few days even with all the rain we've had!! We mixed soil as recommended. We can't wait to eat!

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I am growing potatoes in these bags and they seem to be working well. The are easy to move and drain well. I think I would like them to be bigger than they are. I grew potatos in 'towers' made with chicken wire one year and they were 5' high and I got many potatoes out of them. These could be taller.

Pros:

Cons:
Far from Jumbo, Overpriced, Way to small for planting

I would not consider the Jumbo Grow bag big. I had planned on using it for potatos however, we certainly cannot plant many in there.
I ended up just making my own bags, and will need to use this "Jumbo" bag for something else.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I planted potatoes in these the first year, and they worked incredibly well. I had one extra bag, so i tried it for carrots on a whim, and they were perfect. Straight and lovely. Now, I see they are selling a carrot-specific bag. Harvest is easy and fun - just dump the bags out on a tarp and collect the potatoes. In my opinion, the best part is that the bags are still in great shape, and I expect to reuse them for many years to come. I'm buying more this year to add to my collection.

The fabric of the bag is sturdy without being too hard to manage. I can imagine the bags, as the plants increase in size, unfolding and the soil rising to the top, full of tasty potatoes. I bought this product last year and was successful in harvesting some potatoes. This year, I decided to try for more so bought another. Have already have the potatoes started and hoping for even more success this year.
The bag held up well over the winter as we left it outside. Just emptied most of the soil and started again.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I am so sad to share this experience which was poor to say the least. I bought two potato grow bags and seed potatoes (rainbow) mixture and planted as directed. I watered them every second to third day depending on the weather (thoroughly watered since we save grey-water and therefor have lots). I was so excited to harvest them... all summer I waited and watched. When it came harvest time I have never been so disappointed... tiny little potatoes that would have been painstaking to clean/eat... so I'm planting those potatoes AGAIN this year... I'm going to try a combo of hilling and using straw. I don't know what I am going to do with the bags that stayed in the garage over the winter.

I bought these because I didn't have any more room and wanted to try growing my own potatoes. That was last year. I have put them out again this year. What fun!! And so easy to harvest. I just dumped it onto a tarp and picked the potatoes out. At first I was disapoointed because they kept folding in on me but I took a closer look at the pictures and now know I should fold the edge down a little. These are great.

I've used 3 bags for only one season. They hold shape well & are awaiting this spring's planting. The add portrays turning the bag over to find the potatoes. Are you serious? This would be impossible for me, considering the weight of it. This is a great idea but I'd like to see this 'lift the bag & turn out the potatoes' technique!
Other than this they were fun to use & I will use them again this season.

So far only used it for potatoes, but I bought a couple more this year to see how good they are at growing other things. Right now I have turnips in one & so far so good. They are so easy to use & increase my garden space a lot.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

Purchased these last summer and planted potatoes in them. The yield was not 13 pounds. I weighed them and got 4 pounds of potatoes from one bag, and 4.5 pounds from the other. Grew Kennebacks in them. The pepper plants did not do great in them, nor did the bush variety tomato and carrots; low yields. They are nice for decks, patios, or places where you just want to grow a few extra things and don't have the ground to do it, but the yields aren't all that great. They do drain well, but you have to water every day just like pots. They dry out faster than my regular pots. I think it's all the air circulation and black material. Very hot days they needed watered twice, otherwise the plants would wilt.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

This product plus the cost of container mix far out weighs the cost of just buying potatoes at the farmers market or even a supermarket. I don't know how Gardeners Supply can justify the price; it needs to be no more than $5.00 and even that is high considering you still need container mix.Chuck

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

At first I purchased the potato grow bag for just that, potato's. Since the weather wasn't co-operating, I decided to utilize the bag for a different purpose. Green beans. and other tender seedlings. I have found that in using this product, it's height was too much for the rabbits and other critters to reach what I had planted. I filled it 3/4 of the way with soil and for the first time all season, I've finally had success with the beans, broccoli etc. No worries, potatoes will come soon enough.

This was my second year growing potatoes in the Grow Bag and I had much better results this year. I would say the big difference from last year was I added a good root crop fertilizer to the soil. I got gorgeous, large, scab free tators this year and the harvesting is so easy. Just flip on it's side, out spill the potatoes. For the small amount of space these use (I have 3), the yield this year was excellent.

I bought these for growing potatoes and was very pleased. I planted my potatoes in about 6 inches of soil and then added more soil to the bags as the plants got bigger. I wish the bags went another 6-8 inches higher but we got lots of potatoes out of these and they were easy to gather. Storage is also easy for the winter. I emptied the bags, sorted out the potatoes and am able to keep a pile of dirt (add compost to it) and store the bags for filling next spring.

I don't know whether it was the seed potatoes, the bags, or operator error. I'll try again next year, probably with different seed potatoes. Everythind else said about the bags is true.

Tried doing the mounding thing by adding more soil but the plants had grown so fast they were already a couple of feet tall when I added more soil. This may explain why the only potatoes that developed were on the bottom of the planter. Harvested about 3-4 pounds of small spuds from each but would have liked closer to 10 pounds. Overall just enought to make it worth while. Will try again next year.

Our garden space is small so we bought one potato bag to place among our flowers and try growing potatoes for the first time. We had enough potatoes for a meal for the family and the grandchildren enjoyed the experience too. Will grow more next year. After moving recently, I thought a garden was out of the question until I discovered your grow bags. It seemed too easy to fill the bags, plant and water. My potato crop exceeded my expectations. I harvested 10# of Yukon Golds and Red potatoes out of each bag. Next year I'm doing my tomatoes and cucumbers the same way. Thank you for introducing me to a new way of organic gardening.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

We purchased your grow bags and potatoes this spring. Our ground grows rocks, very inhospitable to any root crops. We thought this growing system, placed on a concrete pad, would finally allow us to have at least a small potato harvest.
Despite following Gardeners' instructions and making sure they all were watered through the hottest, dryest summer in 30 yrs., our efforts were rewarded with 2 small potatoes, not much larger than those we planted. Admittedly, our raised beds did not produce as well as usual, but we did harvest enough from them to make the effort worthwhile.
We may try these again next year, but for this season they have been an expensive failure.

These bags are easy to fill and plant. We use a tube sprinkler in our plants and the plants never get flooded. I like the bags because I can flip the bag over and pull out the potatoes without spearing them with a spade or fork. Would like them a little taller so that more soil could be added and more potatoes would form. Bought two similar bags from another company but G.S. bags are sturdier and can be reused.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I selected grow bags for my first time growing spuds this year after reading great reviews, having good experiences with grow bags for other veggies and pics on the website showing well contained potato plants. This summer, I am growing viking purple (early) and fingerlings (late) - very early on my plants outgrew the containers and have been spilling all over my yard for months. The sides "flop" and there is no way to make them as neat as the pictures show which makes the overgrowth even more difficult to control. I haven't gotten to harvest time yet but I can't recommend this product to anyone, although they may work better for a different (smaller) crop.

I have 2 and am using both for potatoes. So far I really love them. They have done a great job in dealing with record heat and a record setting lack of rain for this area. We had over 30 days with not a drop of rain and temps between 90 to 105. If I get a harvest of potatoes it will blow my mind. The above ground floral is getting taller by the day and the bag makes it very easy to hill. Thanks for an amazing product.

Best Uses:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I have gotten very disappointing yields 2 years in a row with Red Pontiac potatoes. I followed the soil instructions that came with the grow bag. I got few potatoes and all were the size of pebbles. I'm not ready to give up, so I may try a lighter container mix next year and a different type of seed potato. If I get the same results next year, however, that will be strike three. The stems also grew much taller than the maximum height of the bag. Either offer a taller bag or else offer the addition of a cage extension feature that could allow more soil to be built up around the stems.

Great idea for growing potatoes and other crops without having to use a lot of space. The potatoes grew very well and I harvested quite a large crop; all protected from insects and harm by rodents, etc. Several people who noticed the grow bags commented that they would like to buy some; I will use these again next year as they held up quite well throughout our rainy spring and the heat of summer. Highly recommended-even though they won't last forever.

I really love the potato grow bags I recently purchased. My potatoes are already up and growing and I just planted them a few weeks ago. Be sure to follow the instructions..which at first I did not. Start with just a few inches of dirt and add as the plants grow up. This is like mounding the plants if they were in the ground and will produce a larger crop.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I put a potato grow bag together for my mother for Mother's Day and her potato plants look great. The cool thing about this bag, is that it can be put anywhere - you don't have to dig up a new spot. It rests quite nicely on bark or stones and hooked up to a drip system, it's just the perfect solution to adding to the garden without making huge changes. I've started a couple for myself using Yukon Gold, Red, and fingerling potatoes. Mine are also doing quite well. After trying the potato bags, I will definitely try some of the other grow bags, and am looking forward to harvesting. In the meantime, potato plants are actually quite attractive in the landscape.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I just planted my first bag with Potatoes so I can't say if the bag will hold up for years or not or how well it will work but it is easy to use and it fits anywhere and I bet it will be easy to store as well. Do watch out for male dogs peeing on the bags though, keep them away, my friends little dog thought it was a fire hydrant.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

Well, it may be a Potato Grow Bag but I am using it as a liner in an outdoor ceramic pot for which it is extremly difficult to find a liner pot that takes advantage of the ceramic pot's width. This bag was the perfect size for the ceramic pot and the price was reasonable.

I have a tree form Knockout Rose in it as of May 2010. Rose appears to be doing just fine and drying out is not a problem. But I truly won't know until next year just how well the grow bag works.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I'm thrilled at the opportunity to grow potatoes for the 1st time with such a great invention!
I wish it would be taller. According to the online directions, one could add soil twice, but at 17" tall, and with 7" of start up soil, when the plants get 8" tall, one can only add soil one time, not two as directions suggest.

Potatoes are just coming up so we are just starting our potato bag journey. Looking forward to an exciting, productive and confined experiment as I watch missed potatoes or pieces coming up everywhere we've ever planted them. I have one on a patio one on a pathway I'm thinking I'll raise them up on a fine grate to help keep the bottom from always being wet. Lots of gardening buddies are looking on with intrigue as well.

I have potatoes in my grow bags and they're doing really well. I've used a container soil and, as the potatoes have grown, I've added soil and rolled the bags up to a greater height. They are just about ready to start flowering so I'll be checking them daily for enough water. I really like the bag method so far!

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I bought two potato bags three years ago and added two more last year. This year I came back for three more. I have grown potatoes in hills, raised beds and even made my own bins out of wire and lined with newspaper. But I have been so pleased with the potato grow bags. They have held up well under normal seasonal use and I have been getting a nice yield of potatoes each season. I like that they stand on their own and self drain so there is no fear of over watering or potatoes rotting in the ground. When its time to harvest I just fish through the bag and harvest. I take the bag to my compost bin and dump the soil, let the bags dry, fold up and store away till next year. I definitely will use these for years to come and will try some of the other bags too. These are great for those gardeners that don't have lots of space. They fit almost any where and are not messy or unsightly.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I just harvested my first bag of potatoes, and got about 7 pounds of Yukon Golds. Started them in late winter (I was warned that in north Texas, potatoes will die in the summer heat and drought. I was also told I could start them in the fall and harvest in the spring -- I haven't tried that yet) and pulled first batch in early June. Used good quality potting mix, fed and watered regularly and voila ~ potatoes! Can't wait to try these in the fall for carrots, onions, etc.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

The Yukon Gold seed potatoes are growing quite well in the Potato Grow Bags with the All-organic Self-watering Container Mix. They drain well and are holding up to the weather. I expect that they would be good for other crops next year if the potatoes don't turn out well. They are not flimsy, but because of the way they are folded [...] it is possible for the sides to fall in until the level of the soil gets higher as the potatoes grow. Perhaps folding them inside out might help. But since you probably check your garden daily or more often, it's not a deal buster.

This is now year 2 for growing potatoes in the Potato grow bag. (I use it for zucchini too!)
I cannot believe the ease of using this product!
Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Harvesting is even easier! I grew a fabulous crop of potatoes last year...I cut the plant to soil level at the appropriate time then pulled out an abundant harvest of the finest potatoes ever!
I cannot tell you how great it is not to dig for spuds any longer!! The bonus is not having to worry about soil in the garden and not being able to plant certian things where potatoes have been.
I sent these bags out as gifts to friends and family so they too, could harvest yummy potatoes without taking a lot of effort or space!
I love this product and will continue to use it year after year! Thank you Gardener's Supply...

This is my first vegetable garden after years of landscape gardening and we are having one of the coldest and wettest springs in decades. Despite that, the potato bags warmed up fast and within 2 weeks, I have sprouts above the soil line. Disadvantage is that slugs love to live under that warm black bag so slug contol is required. Fabric is heavy duty, seems durable and should last multiple years.

I bought 2 of these thinking I would use both for potatoes. I ended up using one for the potatoes (the yukon gold seed potatos from Gardeners Supply) and the other for carrot seeds. Its been about a month or so and both bags are growing great potato foliage and carrot tops. Initially, I thought these bags would dry out quickly but they hold the moisture well and aerate beautifully. Not a flimsy material either, so I think they could last a good couple of seasons at least. A wonderful product I would highly recommend!

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I have a small veggie garden but wanted a way to grow potatoes and came across this item. So far there are sprouts coming up. The true test will be later in the summer when it becomes time to harvest.

Made of very thick material that will withstand the weather for more than one year of use.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

This is a great idea. I have a terrible spot to grow, on the side of a hill and terrible soil. My potatoe plants are doing great so I expect a good crop. The only complaint is that in the early stages the bag flops over until you get to the point it is half full of dirt (wish it came with a few pieces of bamboo).

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

This is my first season using the potato bags & so far, it seems to be doing what I need it to. It's kinda difficult to relocate it...awkward with its fabric sides & weight of the dirt. I was able to slide it a couple of feet to a slightly better position with no problem, however. Make sure it is right where you want it to begin with, or place it on something sturdy with wheels.
Overall, I think it is just what I needed.

My potatoes are growing wonderfully in this bag so I ordered some more for my onions. Easy to use & store and I can move them around. Okay, so I even went so far as to plant a few pumpkins in them too since I can get the "good dirt" in the bag with the seeds, put the bag outside in an area that the pumpkin can spread out. We'll see how that works this year. Great bags!

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

This is my first year to use this product but I can say it is holding up well and the potato plants are going strong. The grow bags are not hard to use or to place soil in them but you need to have them placed where you want them for the growing season because of the difficulty in moving a soft-body container. I plan on getting more for next year. I will let you know of the production outcome.

One month after purchase the plants are green and growing. I keep adding soil as instructed. I had planned to try growing potatoes in a large garbage can. This is easier. I don't have to cut off the bottom of those trashcans.

The grow bag is filmsy but it will work if you put a giant plastic saucer underneath and leave it in one spot. So find the sunniest spot in your garden before you fill it. I'll know for sure if this works when I harvest my potatoes in September.

None of my seed potatoes have sprouted yet. I'm not sure why. These bags are very small and would not stay upright until I added some support (upside-down tomato cages). I will wait to see if a new planting of seed potatoes sprout. Very disappointed in the product vs price.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

The Potato Grow Bag is a fun way to garden and is good when you have limited space. I just planted my potatoes so I don't have a lot of information yet. If this works out well, next year I am going to try sweet potatoes also. I was wondering about planting zucchini in a bag, they take up so much room in a small garden.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

When potatoes are initially placed in the bag, before extra soil has been added to cover up the emrging shoots, the bag is at risk of blowing away in the wind. I stock a brick in the bottom and removed it after the soild (and the weight of the soil) was added. If you don't do this and your area gets 20 mile per hour wind gusts, the bag will succomb and move...even blow away.

Comments about Potato Grow Bags:

I was interested in getting some of my veggies out of the garden and into the landscape but didn't want to dig potatoes up and ruin the mulch either. This solved the problem. Two weeks after planting, the potatoes have sprouted. I think the bag warmed the soil and get them an extra boost to get started.
