For years now, gardeners in England have made the most of very limited garden space by growing vegetables, greens and herbs in plastic bags placed on steps, patios and landings. We’ve made improvements and achieved terrific results — and you will, too! First, our Salad Grow Bags are made of patented, double-layer polypropylene instead of sheet plastic. This felt-like fabric breaths better, so your plants won’t suffer from heat build-up, overwatering, or poor aeration. Plus, our fabric air prunes plant roots, resulting in a strong, healthy root system. We’ve developed a Grow Bag for many popular crops — shallow for salads, deep for tomatoes, peppers and potatoes. That means less planting mix to buy and better results.

Bought the salad bag to give to my mother who recently retired to a condo and gave up her beloved garden. Her balcony is south facing and she has problems keeping plants watered. The bag with tray and wicking fabric simplifies her watering and keeps plants moist and healthy. Within three weeks the lettuce I planted in the bag was twice the size of the lettuce in my garden planted weeks earlier! Perfect for patios and balconies.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
This was a great start for me My lettuce is growing I love it!!!
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I used these bags to grow lettuce. The sides do not hold their shape so the bag does not stay in a rectangle making it difficult to keep an even depth of soil. The bags are handy to grow veggies on the patio. And they keep the soil moist which is why I chose them over a traditional planter box. But I wish they were less flimsy.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
No support to it and sides collapse. Construction too flimsy.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I planted this on my deck away from all the animals! Terrific!
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I love these bags. I can grow what I need without killing by back.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
We have a huge deck and because of joint problems have decided to move our very large ground garden
into containers on our deck. I planted the lettuce weeks ago and have more than I know what to do with. I bought the tray to go under it which makes it much easier to move. The area where it is now does not get into full sun until afternoon. As the summer gets hotter, my plan is to move (it's on a wrought iron garden cart) the lettuce to shadier parts of the deck when the sun is strongest to try to keep it from bolting for as long as possible.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I like it because I can get lettuce for my salad right outside my door instead of having to walk to the garden. just great
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
Kinda flimsy until you put enough soil, so just make sure you fill it up. But other than that, it's good for micro greens.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
The Salad Grow bag fits anywhere and is movable when needed.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
The lettuce I planted over two weeks ago is finally growing so we're hoping for fresh salads soon!
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
i was very disappointed in the way this item didn't hold up. it has handles for moving it and when i picked it up by the handle and one of the sides, it ripped to pieces. for an item that is supposed to withstand being outdoors, it sure is flimsy. it seemed to have rotted in just a matter of months.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
This was my first grow bag. I have since bought several more; tomato, herb and pepper bags. I love it and the beautiful lettuce that we started eating just 2 weeks after planted. I plan on purchasing more next season for gifts. What a great gift for friends with small patios who love fresh veggies!!!

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I used the potato growing bag to grow 2 separate batches of potatoes, and finally in late fall I grew lettuce. It is wonderful, so this year I bought another potato growing bag and one for salad. I hope the salad will work well

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
i was very excited, initially, to use this product. the handles made it easy to move and the fabric didn't add weight like a pot would have. HOWEVER, it was very flimsy and mine rotted in less than 6 mos. very, very disappointing. for the cost, i would expect it to last much longer.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
For growing leaf lettuce, you cant beat it. I had one last year, and was able to successfully grow 10 heads of romaine (5 on each side). The bag does dry out, like any container does, but on the flip side, it does provide a built in moisture monitor, as the sides of the bag will feel damp to the touch if the water supply is adequate. I am definitely getting another one for this year!

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I am using the salad grow bags with their self-watering trays to grow spinach indoors under lights this winter. It works surprisingly well - see the attached photos of my rig, constructed from cheap 4" utility shelving from Home Depot and T5 light fixtures from Gardener's (the lights are switched off for the photo). Two grow bags/trays fit perfectly on one shelf. I used fresh peat/vermiculite/perlite potting mix to avoid insects coming in on used mix. The salad bags do bulge when filled with moist potting mix, so don't expect them to stay perfectly square. However, I have no problem keeping the filled bags on the self-watering trays.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I had given up growing lettuce because the slugs always got to it first and ruined it. With the Salad Grow Bag, I was able to keep the lettuce up on a table and the result was beautiful, lush, slug-free lettuce. The material drains nicely so the soil doesn't get too wet.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
Lettuce - just picked some and it has only been a month.
Radishes, gr. onions, scallions, carrots & beets are all growing just wonderful. Will see how these will do as season progresses.
Using the herb bag and all herbs are growing great.
No cons as of yet.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
Salad grow bags don't hold their shape and get too wet. With the tray under the bag, the bags wick water full time and make shallow root vegetables water logged.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I planted lettuce seedlings about a week ago and it's incredible how much they've grown. The trays are sitting on top of the rain barrels out of reach of the bunnies!

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I got several salads from my lettuce. The problem I had was the strips that were to use as wicks rotted away,So no water to wick up to the plants. This was ok not something I'm going to get again. But it worked for a while. At least held water longer than my other bags.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
Loved the fact that I did not have to decide what was lettuce and what was weeds. We have 2 garden boxes and 2 bags (potatoe and lettuce) only the bags have produced for us, except for peppers.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I grew lettuce (mesclun mix) and spinach in my grow bag. I used it in conjunction with the self watering tray. I used Gardener's supply container mix and added energy buttons. I had great success. Very encouraging for a new gardener! I purchased another grow bag and watering tray for a friend.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I've been unable to grow mesclun mix for years. Tried the salad grow bag this year and without investing more time than it takes to plant and water I have the largest and most delicious crop of mesclun mix I've ever grown! Even with an extremely hot and dry summer the lettuce is still going strong!

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I was disappointed in this product as it seems to be too shallow and the animals get into it.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
It was easy to trim for better fit in my large container.#1 reason I bought it: I don't have to worry about soil getting down on the balcony underneath mine.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
The design of this bag is perfect for growing salad leaves, with the exception of a lack of handles. Handles would make moving the bag much easier.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
The salad grow bag and tray were not exactly what I had expected. The sides don't stand straight up, but bulge slightly. After everything is soaked it can be shaped a little better. I do like having it on my deck in the shade. I'm not sure how easy it will be to move if necessary. The lettuce mix that I used is growing nicely right now. I'm anxious to see how it is when the summer heats up. I also want to see how it holds up through the growing season.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I have loved the tomato success kits for years, they are awesome. I only have a tiny sunny spot in my yard as most is shade. I thought it would be cool to grow salad and when I saw this product I ordered it right away. I found it was too shallow to really plant the lettuces and the flimsy sides were all floppy and did not really appear solid. After one day I am no longer using this product. The self watering tray they sold with it was also a complete downer. Very unusual for Gardener's Supply.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
This already shallow bag distorts when you place soil in it, making it even shallower and resulting in uneven soil depths. That being said the plants I placed in it are thriving. I also have the larger tomato and pepper bags and really like those.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I was interested in getting this but like the herb bag I was somewhat disappointed. It is better constructed than the herb bag but still a little flimsy. I am waiting to see how my lettuce does.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
That I can grow my own lettuce in such a small space is fabulous! I'm a container gardener, and this is an ideal container for leafy veggies.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I like the idea of the watering tray, and have used the tray and capillary mat, alone for starter seedlings in peat 1" containers. Now that the seedlings have been planted in raised beds, I've filled the salad grow bag, and the herb grow bag, with soil, etc., and with plants. These would work much better if there were a simple external plastic frame (2-4" high) around the side walls, so that everything stayed in place. I'm going to use a bunge cord, in the interim, but the manufacturer should provide frames for the future. Not very difficult, or expensive--they could come in pieces and snap together.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I have it planted with herbs. I like the self watering tray. The appearance is awful - see above. I don't know how you kept the ones in the catalog looking so neat. We didn't even use all the soil you said we'd need and the sides are bulging and flopping.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I'm using this for basil and cilantro. You need to fold down the top edge a bit so that it won't bow out. However, I like these containers.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I use several salad grow bags along with the self-watering trays to grow vegetables on my deck. They're perfect for growing a small salad garden and other vegetables that require the same soil depth and space. I think the bags will be easy to transport inside and use with indoor grow lights, or use in a green house over the winter.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I bought this for my 89 yo mom who has always loved her garden and can grow lettuce on her deck. I do wish I had ordered the tray. I think it would help hold the shape better.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
The only issue I have with this bag is that the ends are a little bit flimsy. But it still grows my salad really well, and it actually looks really pretty.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I got this to grow strawberries as I don't have much ground to convert to gardening. So far so good - the plants look healthy and are starting to bear fruit. I also use the self-watering tray since the summer temperatures here can move beyond 100 degrees and I'm always looking for ways to make sure the container garden stays watered. I will say the bags do bulge out at the sides when filled with dirt, and these are not particularly deep so that would limit what can be planted in them. Customer service folks were VERY helpful in walking me through how to use the watering tray (not self-evident!) and in making sure I was ordering what I needed.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
overall - very pleased with quality, and plants (salad greens) are growing well. I'm not sure how to do it, but the sides need to be stabilized - when it's filled - they 'bow-out'. And although the price for the bag is great, needing to purchase an expensive tray to sit it in/on makes it pricy. And the tray is the only way to keep it from getting things wet - it drains great - no soggy soil.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
This gives the gardener so much flexability on what and where to put their garden, wonderful!

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I loved the idea of growing fresh salad. However this bag design is flawed and does not stand properly, the edges bulge out and even with the watering tray the bag slouches out. The bag and tray are impossible to move once filled.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
wish I had bought tray for it-needs stability a little bit-next time

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
What this product needs is a frame to sit in and hold up the sides. This is a general complaint and I think a frame would solve the problem. I am going to add an image to show you what it does.

I'm growing salad greens on my deck this year. I think I may finally get a home grown salad before the rabbits do!
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
So easy to set up and use. Lettuce is growing nicely.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
Doesn't work well at all without the stiff drain shelf. I made my own from old plant trays to get started.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
This is very helpful for starting greens and using them into the summer....the ability to move the Grow Bag and remove the greens from direct sun as the weather warms is very helpful. I have just started seeds and do not know how it will work over time.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
This bag allows me to grow lettuce on my deck for my family. I planted it with ease and the lettuce is flourishing. The only problem I see is moving the bag once it is full with dirt and plants. Works well with self watering tray.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I've been impressed with how well the lettuce is growing this season. I believe the combination of the grow bag and the gardener's supply growing mix -- plus perfect cool weather -- have resulted in one of my best lettuce crops. The only con is the awkward size - there isn't a natural place I could find in the yard to put it. So it's resting on our backyard dining table.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
So useful for mesclun and other leaf lettuces. I kept reseeding a portion every 3 weeks or so, and got rotating crops all Jan through now (April). I keep it on the self-watering tray along with my 2' grow light on the clothes dryer. Very functional design, and nearly-instant gratification!
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I have several of these and they are great for many different plants. Fill with soil and you don't have to weed. Since I am one of the "golden" generation, I cannot stoop or bend as well as years past. These containers allow me to grow everything I want without worrying about the pain!
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
The corners need to be better supported. After you fill it (even after spending an hour trying to form it) you end up with the sides bowing out significantly.
Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
Using on deck for easy harvesting.

Comments about Salad Grow Bags:
I already have a 4' growlight. I wanted lettuce in the winter, and I have no windows for something like this. 2 of these, along with the self-watering trays, fit nicely under the lights. I water with 3 liters of water for each tray about twice a week, perhaps less often. Seems to be working, although I've only had this setup for 2 weeks. The lettuce is growing nicely. A packet of cut-and-come-again seeds. I need to move the seedlings from the sides, as they don't get enough of the light. Next time I will plant about 2 inches away from each side. I will probably need to tweak my system more as time passes. I'd like to save the growing mix from year to year, adding compost, or compost tea. I used one bag of growing mix per tray, seems to be plenty
