(based on 650 ratings)
Located in: Pots & Planters, Outdoor Planters, Self-Watering Planters

Our field tests prove it: In self-watering planters, this lightweight mix works better than conventional potting soil. Its coarse, airy texture acts like a wick, carrying water from the planter’s reservoir to the root system. The result is more vigorous root growth, better aeration and less waterlogging. It's also an ideal mix for standard pots and planters. Contains sphagnum peat, perlite, vermiculite and limestone. 20-quart bag.

  • Promotes vigorous root growth
  • No waterlogged soil
  • Amazing wicking action

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

Used this in our Self-Watering window boxes we bought from Gardener's Supply. We LOVE the window boxes and this soil mix worked PERFECT! Never a problem. We used this at our beach house where we do not live full time. Our flowers always were watered. When gone for extended periods of time, it was very simple for our neighbor to keep our plants watered. Very little monitoring needed.

The bag of dry soil is light enough to carry to your work area and has holes to allow easy mixing with water before putting it in the container.
It would help if the description of each container or use would specify how many bags of soil are needed.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I have containers which sit alongside my cement driveway all day in the hot sun. I used to have problems with them drying out even if I watered them every morning and every evening. With my Gardeners Supply self-watering pots and this container mix, that concern is gone, and I don't even have to water every other day. This mix works beautifully with the self watering pots and my plants grow much faster than in tradtional pots, even when filled with brand name "moisture control" potting mix.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I purchased 9 of the self-watering window boxes and this mixture to put in them. My plants are doing very well with minimal care. On the advice of the great Gardener Supply people, I waited for about a week after planting and then added some mild liquid plant food to the soil. I've read comments from others that purchased the window boxes that they were having problems with them draining poorly. I'd highly recommend using this soil, as even after days of rain, my boxes and plants are doing great.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

It works very well for the self-watering containers. I have not liked the small square plastic self-waterers. They get too wet. The indicator for the water level is the best in them. The large square self-watering container also gets too wet. The rectangle trough is the best in the plastic ones. The teak self watering squares are great for my blueberries. They are on the deck to protect the berries from the birds. I was unable to get the upside down cylinder planters to work very well. I don't know how much water to give them.

I use this product in two self-watering planters at our out-of-state campsite. The plants have been "on their own" for as long as three weeks without getting any water other than rainfall, and they bloomed all last summer. The container mix kept the moisture at a good level, without drying out too much or becoming saturated.

This is the best potting soil I have used, whether in the self-watering containers or just regular flower pots. It has a great water-holding capacity, so the soil stays moist but not soggy. Even a very large pot filled with the soil and plants is easy to carry and move around unlike other potting soil mixes.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I had previously ordered the self-watering planters but did not use until beginning of June along with the potting soil. We were gone for eight days and the TN summer weather was hot, also rainy. Upon our return home we were delighted to see that the plants and my hubby's vegetables in pots looked wonderful in spite of the heat and amount of rain that occured while we were gone. Very pleased with all products I have purchased from Gardener's Supply. These self watering devices are a great idea, best since sliced bread. Staff at Gardener's Supply are always pleasant and very helpful. Thank You.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I've tried other soils which claimed an ability to hold on the water but haven't been happy with them. They tend to compact more than this soil. This soil works great in the self-watering pots and in regular pots as well. All of my plants that are potted in this soil are doing well. I've decided to use it exclusively when I repot.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

This mix went from the bag to the upside down tomato planters I purchased from this site. It has allowed the tomato plants to explode - just planted on Mother's Day & less than 1 month into the planting, I have numerous flowers & a few baby tomatoes already. The mix keeps the roots hydrated & allows for easy expansion of the entire root system throughout. It is light, which is a good thing because when the planters are assembled & full, they weigh ALOT. I will use this mix next year, the year after, etc.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

This is great for container gardening. I used it to plant vegetables and herbs in self-watering containers and grow bags. Initially I used my own mixture of soil, manure, perlite, fertilizer and peat moss in the grow bags, but my mixture was just too heavy to move around once it was in the containers. The container mix is a perfect blend and it's light weight. It's worth the price.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I grow tomatoes in my tomato success kit and hanging tomato planters in it. Mixed with some good organic fertilizer, it's great! I can even lift the hanging tomatoes-the soil is so light. I had to move some last year due to the weather.

The only drawback I had was that one of the hanging kits grew some mold or fungus last year because we had a really wet, humid summer. I don't fault the Mix for that, though. It didn't grow it as bad as some of the other things I was using for plants.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I use the self-watering container mix in two windowboxes that are attached to my porch railing. I have had these for several years, and each year I order the mix from Gardeners Supply because I know it will work well with the self-watering planters. I have seen other mix in stores that claim to do the same thing, but I would rather use Gardeners Supply's mix because it is tried and true. Once a week watering is all it takes. I recommend these containers and the container mix to all my friends who inevitably ask where I found such wonderful planters.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I planted two tomato plants using revolution planters. One held the self watering container mix and the other held the left over bag of soil I used from last year. Within a week the bag without the self watering container mix got too heavy from unexpected rain and broke my plant bracket causing my tomato plant to pound into the ground as it fell. The container with self watering container mix is easier to lift when hanging and is also still holding strong.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I have never been sure why you only advertise it for "self watering pots." I use it for all outdoor container plants. It works just as well. if not better, than other soils. I like the fact that it is lightweight making the bags easy to lift and cart around. This is great for those of us who aren't quite as spry as we used to be. Considering our aging population, I think you're missing a good bet.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I purchased two large self watering patio planters from this web site. I also bought 2 bags of this mix to fill one of them. I decided to buy container soil at [...] that matched the contents of this mix most closely (and which was much cheaper) to fill the other planter. I planted identical plants in each planter (snap dragons and pansies). All the plants in this mix are still alive and doing well while in the other mix most of the pansies died immediately and the snap dragons aren't doing as well. THIS MIX IS DEFINITELY WORTH THE PRICE. I won't experiment with other mixes again for use with self-watering containers.

Didn't buy enought for the four planters and ended up with two of this product and two planters with "similar" material from a local garden center. MISTAKE! There was a big need (almost 2x) to water the garden center ones more than the Gardener's Supply mix. I won'r make the same mistake twice.

This year I grew tomatoes on my patio using the

I put this soil in several container roses on my deck. Between the self-watering containers, periodic rain, and this soil I have not had to actually water the roses at all this summer. Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I was given a Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) for my birthday last year. After fretting over the limp leaves and sad look it had from top-watering, I started to bottom water it with a catch-bowl underneath. This became annoying and a bit unsightful. I came across this special soil and also the reservoirs for pots (which allow bottom-watering) and now have a very happy healthy Peace Lily. It is gorgeous!! Thanks for helping me to keep this very thoughtful and lovely plant.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I was given a beautiful Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) as a birthday gift last year. It was not doing well in its original pot with top-watering, so I started bottom watering it with a dish underneath for excess water. That was just plain annoying! I found this product on-line, along with the reservoir system for any pot, and I now have a fantastic healthy Peace Lily. Can you say, happy, happy, happy??? :-} Awesome soil!! Thanks Gardener's Supply!!!!

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

Decided to use the recommended self-watering container mix to go with my new planters from Gardener's. Bags are lightweight and after filling 20" planters (including water), I can still lift them. Planting was easy. However I lost some of my drought-resistant plants so I'm not sure how the self-watering feature starts to work. The water in the reservoir needed about a quart after the first month. There must be some missing step to get the water defusing upward into the soil. I've been watering more and the remaining plants look great. I'm hopeful the self-watering feature will still work, especially in the winter with my native perennials.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

Pots with water reservoirs plus this potting soil seem to have solved problems with heat/cold and watering. In the Summer heat, the water keeps the root area from becoming too hot and keeps the plant correctly watered. In the Winter cold, the water keeps the roots from freezing and correctly watered. And it frees me from watering all the time. I just fill the bottom of the pot with water. The plants are looking happier too.

Did not purchase enough of mix for window planters. Made my own mixture using peat moss, perilite, mushroom compost and sand. This worked as good as bags I purchased. Had 25lb bag of perilite on hand from a farm store which I had used for hypertufa planters. Everything else can be purchased from garden supply stores. So you can mixup your own or buy direct and pay frt.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I bought the self watering patio planter and used this specific container mix. It is rich and yet light. Very easy to plant items in it and the combo of materials is quite unique. It holds the plants and distributes moisture and yet it also drains well. The container is great but the soil is a big part of the key to success. I recommend this. The bag was a good size too that I could get it out of box and use it (smaller than larger/heavier bags from "home stores and garden centers")

I used this soil mix with my terraza planters and my gardener's supply window boxes and they have really combined well to keep my plants healthy in a very windy and at times very hot climate. I live by the beach in New England and the varied weather patterns can really play havoc with my plants. By having this system of self watering containers and this soil mix, my plants are able to thrive in the alternating hot and windy summers.

This is our second year using the self-watering container mix to grow herbs on the patio. Our summer is long and hot, and patio containers have not fared well in the past. Getting a constant supply of water has made all the difference, and the self-watering containers mean that we do not have to water daily for good water supply to the plants. Our herbs and our palates both thank you!

My fault but I did not read the directions until after I had filled the growing container with this soil. I was supposed to have mixed in water as I filled it, which is a pain in any event, and I had to dump everything and start over. I am now having an issue with fungus on my tomato plants, a problem I've never had before. Don't know if it has to do with this mix "holding on" to water or what - but I am underwhelmed by the product

We used this in 3 window boxes. We have always had trouble maintaining the proper moisture level in our window boxes - this product has solved that problem. And the plants love it - they are spilling over the edge after only a week of being planted.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

When container gardening, my biggest problem is that conventional (read chemical-enriched) potting soil BURNS MY HANDS. I enjoy gardening as a way to get close to the earth and nature; I don't enjoy having to wear hazmat gloves to handle dirt.

I was THRILLED to be able to work with this material and not have blisters all over my fingers when I was done. (I have eczema prone skin, it blisters with scary ease and then bleeds, itches and burns for weeks.)

This container/potting soil is wonderful, because I can add EXACTLY what I need, when I need it. This means I can use it for ANY container/pot planting!!!

Self Watering Container Mix
By Paul the SurferVerified Purchaser from Chittenango, NY on 6/6/2009
Pros:
Drains Well
Best Uses:
Outdoor Plants
Describe Yourself:
Master Gardener
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

The self watering container mix is a good product for a novice but one that can be duplicated at a much lower cost by anyone who understands garden soils. Also, I do not understand any reason to discard the soil mixture after the growing season is over. I will simply dismount the planters and store them in a dry environment where temperatures stay above freezing - to prevent the planters from cracking if there is still water in the soil.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I bought what I thought was enough of this soil to fill the planters I also purchased. I got twice as much as expected but am not concerned as I love the self-watering planters and plan to purchase more. This is easy to work with, very light and seems to hold water well--my plants are doing great. Considering the shipping costs though, I wonder if it would be cheaper to make your own.

Last year I used a potting soil with moisture control and the plants had a hard time growing with the self watering system but this year I used the self watering mix and my potted plants are much happier. The mix is nice and light which allows the roots to find the water vapors much easier. I will be using the mix each year.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I really like this dirt. I live in Calif and we are in a drought so you are not suppose to water a lot. I'm useing it for the Topsy Tomato tree and you know how much tomato's like water. Well so far I don't have to give them more or less (depends on the weather) then a quart a day and there are 3 plants in it. Also I know it's silly but I didn't use my gardening gloves when I put the dirt in , because it felt so silky.

Comments about Self-Watering Container Mix:

I have post of flowers hanging in full sun from my fence. I am away alot and not around to water the plants. This, combined with a self watering container does a great job keeping my annuals alive. The pots are in full sun and made of metal. Depending on the weather, I can get from 2 days to week without watering. If it's 90 degrees and dry, I might get only two days. But, if it rains even a little, I can get through a week, especially in cooler weather.

First, it doesn't cost a fortune to have planting medium delivered to your door. This is a lightweight healthy container mix that won't weigh down your pots, indoors or out. I add some fertilizer to this mix before filling containers and have had great success with tomatoes, peppers, herbs and flowering plants. I won't use anything else now! This mix is much lighter than other mixes I've tried, and it smells good!

I am new to this, so I wouldn't take my word for anything.
Also, I only recently started using it.

However I can say that in my self-designed self-watering container garden with 30% this stuff on the edges dipping into the large reservoir and a mix of regular potting soil and compost everywhere else the soil stayed slightly damp but not overly saturated for 3 weeks without adding any water or doing anything in particular.
