Barrel gardens overflowing with colorful flowers look great flanking a driveway, but wooden barrels crack or rot in a year or two. Our Whiskey Barrel looks absolutely authentic, but it's actually made of indestructible half-inch-thick recycled plastic that has the grain and texture of wood, bound by rusted steel hoops that give it an antique look. Best of all, this barrel is self-watering!

I have had two Barrels for 3 years- they are just dandy! I am in need of a couple more to support my relocating and transplanting efforts.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I bought one of these last year and it performed extremely well in full sun even during the hottest, driest periods. The bands rusted attractively, but the barrel itself is still in perfect condition. The only problem with it is that I had to drill my own drainage holes just above the reservoir line - without them, the plants could end up floating in excess water during a heavy rain or if overwatered.

I've had mine for about 3 years now, and it still looks great! I wanted to get a couple more since in the Texas heat planters really have to be self watering.

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
Our village beautification committee purchased 15 of these last year, and hoped to purchase more this year to replace our old, heavy, deteriorating wooden whiskey barrels. They worked out great for us. They reduced manhours for watering, were much lighter in weight for village crews to move, and very attractive.
I am very disappointed they are no longer available.

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
To the person that was disappointed that the bands rusted: THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO RUST!! It is what makes the barrels look real. [...]. We've not had rain for 2 weeks, my two barrels are in the blazing sun all day and I've only had to fill them twice. I mix the plant food in my watering can, remove the 'rose' and pour it in the tube. My supertunias have never done so good. THANK YOU!! PLEASE email me when these are available - I may want two more next year. My first one I bought about 5 years ago. My second one came last month, [...]

I've owned these for 4 years now and I love them.
Several things to note:
-The edges of the decorative metal hoops are sharp
-You have to drill your own drainage overflow holes
-Replacement wick material is available here
-Mine easily last a week between waterings
-The fill tube makes it easy to feed regularly

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
Our end of driveway/mailbox area is very far from
a water source. This invention saves me many heavy tote jobs
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
We purchased three of these whiskey barrels to decorate the entrance to our local public library. It is a sunny spot and these containers are perfect for the location. The self-watering reserve lets the librarians fill the containers less frequently while allowing the plants to get the water they need, especially over weekends and holidays. The library has had multiple compliments on the new planters.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
Great container that works well. Only con-rust colored bands were more of a bronze/pewter color so didn't look as nice as the picture. All in all a great product.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I love the look of the self watering whiskey barrels. I placed them in an area that I don;t have a water supply and my plants stay watered and are growing wonderfully, The only thing that disappointed me is the metal strip around the barrels rusted almost instantly so hopefully they will last in the wet Oregon winters.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
This barrel looks so real from a very small distance it is amazing. Was a bit skeptical but I've had it at least 4 years and will be ordering another in a week or two. Water capacity is very good. In full sun in my zone 6a, it'll go a week. Yes, it's empty but the soil is still moist. Thank you!

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
We have the barrel by our mailbox and it really dresses the area up - we love it! It is light enough in weight that we will be able to store it for the winter.

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I purchased this because of the self-watering aspect, since the half barrels are located a good distance from hoses and water. However, as a single, older person living alone, the barrels were quite heavy for me to move to their locations. I think they will work fine now they are there, but will have to wait through the summer to see how well they fulfill the self-watering aspect, and how often I have to refill the reservoir.

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
Disappointed in the appearance after the first few hours. Product is for outdoor use so I would not expect the metal bands to rust. So far the rusting is not consistent and looks ugly.
have not used it long enough to determine the functionality of the watering system.

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
Last year the barrel leaked and emptied in a short time. So this May I emptied the soil, and discovered a crack almost half way around the bottom edge. Very disappointed.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
It looks beautiful in my front yard and the watering system seems to be working well. Mid summer in NC will be the true test. Size compares well to a wood whiskey barrel from the garden shop, but I know they rot with time. I was tired of replacing them, so this is the perfect solution. My only complaint is I wish it looked a bit more like real wood. It has a good texture to the surface, but needs highlights. Love the rusty look of the bands

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
The only down fall is you need to replace the screen and wicks each year.We liked them so much that we bought more this year.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I could't be happier with this planter, I have purchased 4 additional ones I love it so much. I use them at a weekend house so I was concerned about the reservoir but I have never had an issue and everything from flowers to herbs to tomatoes grow great in them.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
i purchased three of these and they are wonderful....the neighbors love them also...

THIS PRODUCT IS THE ANSWER!
To add a colorful, easy to care for container (or 2) garden to frame your driveway, this is it!
I planted mine with a riot of colorful annuals, trailing vines, tall spikes and different shades of green background plants. It required watering ONLY once per week and was just a joy to see. EVERY plant grew huge and I actually had to cut some of them back! I recently ordered one as a Christmas gift for our son, who has a big tree stump at the end of his long drive and this planter is going to be the perfect answer for him also! Thank you for this great, authentic looking planter! Gloria Butler, Plain City Ohio
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
This product performed very well for me and is my favorite planter. Having a lightweight, weather resistant alternative to a wine barrel is a great idea. Only drawbacks so far are that the metal rings on the outside rusted after just one season which sort of ruins the weather resistant aspect of the main tub. Also, I can't find any wicking fabric to replace the one supplied with the tub. It tore apart when I removed everything for winter. This is a large planter and is too heavy to move when filled so I recommend putting it on casters which also elevates the tup for even easier access. With a bit of fine tuning I believe this could be the ultimate self-watering planter.

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I share a backyard fence with a close neighbor and wanted to get a clematis growing to provide seasonal privacy between us. I wasn't sure if I wanted the whiskey-barrel look, but decided to give it a try based on testimonials. First, the color of the barrel is (I would say) "espresso brown" which goes perfectly with my more contemporary home. The band is silver, which I also love. However, I'll be happy with the rusty-look, too.
There is definitely enough room for lots of plants and their roots. I have an early pink clematis, a pink dwarf hydrangea, white and pink bacopa, deep-pink baby petunias and pink-to-white gaura. They are all very happy in the barrel, and the clematis has already climbed to the top of the fence trellis-top.
They handled a week-long intense heat wave with no problem. I am now considering one for the front of my home, between the garage bays. First I'll see how mine handles Fall and Winter.

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
How nice not to have to water every day or to able to go away for a few days and not have to stress about withered plants when I arrive home. I plan to purchase a few of the barrels every year to gradually replace the ever deteriorating wooden barrels that I currently use.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I love self watering items from your company and this fills the bill. However, I bought the item from looking at the picture regarding the color and it appears blue. Receiving the item, color is black.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
We've got a small containerized Japanese Maple tree that is the perfect corner piece for our vacation home deck. The problem was keeping it watered when we're away for a week or so. This container was the perfect solution. The sturdy construction of the self watering system makes it strong enough to support the dwarf maple and it's hefty root ball. The large capacity resevoir supplies plenty of water for this thirsty tree when we're gone.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I love this planter. I put it in front of our restaurant(it's a pirate themed rest.) and they look great. The self watering system is very well designed. I would highly recomend them.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
This unusual planter is attractive and has gotten lots of positive comments. It was easy to put together and there's plenty of capacity for several potted plants. The only drawback was the immediate rust on the bands after the first rain.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
Set on the sidewalk by the outside steps which show the the product and the flowers that are growing in it.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
The self watering barrels are the answer to adding color to a 2nd floor deck in the bright sun.

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
Liked the size but would have liked the rings to not rust so quickly.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I bought the barrel planter specifically for my weekend home. The concept sold me on keeping plants thriving and alive all week. So far, so good.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
The whiskey barrel ia a nice addition to the front of our garage area. Many favorable comments on how nice the flowers look.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
USE TO REPLACE WOODEN WINE BARRELS THAT DON'T LAST MORE THAN A FEW YEARS AND DRY OUT QUICKLY. HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE HOW MY PLANTS SURVIVE THIS SUMMER
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
Used it to help my sister make an empty space look attractive! She just loves it.!
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I use my barrels on varous items. I grew mixed herbs in one barrel last year. It worked out great. My wife grows mixed flowers. They worked out well. Their capacity and durability make them really attractive to use for perinnial planting, tree roses, dwarf fruit tress or any hardy plant that can be left to winter in its container outside. Their size and weight make them too cumbersome to try and bring inside in cold weather.

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
Our town garden club uses this barrel along main street. We have 16 and keep adding! They stay out on sidewalks all year round and have had no condition problems due to winter weather (we are in the northeast). We add new soil as needed and replace all soil and capillary mat every two years or so. 8 gallon reservoir is the best as watering can be a challenge! Reservoir tube can be a problem. We have lost caps and had to use plumbing caps instead. Floatation device is not accurate because it gets stuck at the bottom of the tube. The weep holes are the best indicator that the reservoir is full. Our flowers are beautiful and blooming in Rockaway, NJ! Thank you for this wonderful product!

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
Bought this product because here in the Florida Keys, water conservation is paramount, and also plants dry out fast. We had high hopes for this large self watering barrel, but everything we have tried in this barrel has died. Over 10 plants have died in the barrel. The soil on top seems to be completely dry constantly, the wicking feature seems to be completely faulty, despite the fact there is in fact water in the bottom, and we check the level regularly. Plain and simple this product is either a defective one, or is a poor design.

Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I have used countless wooden whiskey barrels that have fallen apart after one season. This one will not and it's very attractive. It is placed near my mailbox about 125' from the house. The fact that it is self watering saves me countless long walks down the driveway. Thank you Gardeners Supply you have another winner!
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
The barrels look very authentic and the set-up was so easy. Now my beautiful flowers can survive the heat (of facing west) even when I'm out of town.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
the metal bands are rustihg. Can they be removed for for painting or should they be left to rust?
When winter comes, can the barrel be left to freeze or should the growing medium be removed, and the barrel be stored upsidedown for the winter?
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I can go away on vacation and not worry about someone not watering my plants.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I got my soil level a little too high & this makes the filler tube hard to use
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
Love the barrel and it looks great. However, the water filler tube is a bit flimsy. The floating water level indicator often gets stuck in the bottom of the tube; it is difficult to determine the water level. The cap will not stay on top of the watering tube. Overall, a great buy and I would buy it again.
Comments about Self-Watering Whiskey Barrel:
I love this barrel. Really easy to set up and great results. You could use this for any type of plant. Works great for vacations - no more dead plants when we get home - just ripe tomatoes - love it!
