Leaks
By tamVerified Reviewer from Portland Oregon on 5/5/2011
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about 20-Year Teak Planters:

Gardener's Supply has sent me at least two replacement square planters. They all leak no matter what I do. The water wrecks my floor. One star for their looks.

Comments about 20-Year Teak Planters:

I read the other reviews before purchasing, so I should have known. This product is extremely light weight and is NOT an effective planter. The self watering unit does not fit well with the planter frame, causing the dirt to slide through. The corners also have gaps. Like others, I put bricks under it to support it and cut pieces of plastic to fill the corners. I don't think it's teak either. If it is, it's very low grade. Save your money - don't buy!

Looks Great but Not Functional
By ScottVerified Reviewer from Washington, DC on 9/2/2010

Comments about 20-Year Teak Planters:

I would not recommend this planter to anyone. It does not assemble properly even though I used the proper tools and followed directions. There are large holes in the bottom corners that would allow soil to fall right through. The self-watering tray does not rest on the rails as it should so it keeps falling to the ground. This is a very badly designed product. It looks great but does not function.

Comments about 20-Year Teak Planters:

Love it! It is on my deck and my herbs are growing beautifully. The only problem is that the bottom is not totally closed in the corners so soil leaks out. I solved the problem easily by putting stones in the corners.

I've just set this up so can't comment to how it holds up over time. It was easy to assemble and looks nice. Construction was a bit more light weight then I had expected. If it works as promised then I'll be very satisfied.

This planter looks great and keeps the plants well watered. It was easy to put together. We planted a shrub and two smaller plants in it and they look good and are healthy. I would like an even bigger one if it were available.

Comments about 20-Year Teak Planters:

My wife is an obsessive gardener; buying something for her is a little intimidating, but this little guy did the trick. It's smaller than I thought it was, but that's on me. She loves it, and we think its modern look & feel on the patio couples nicely w/the older, more classic look of everything else out there.

It is way overpriced for what it is. The self watering part is so flimsy that it doesn't fit properly. I question, if the wood is really teak.It certainly doesn't look like the picture.

Comments about 20-Year Teak Planters:

We are using the planters on our deck overlooking the lake. We purchased 4 boxes and are thrilled with the way they look and the capacity of the water reservoir. The teak wood appears to be very good quality so we are hopeful that the planters will stand up to the durability claims made in catalog. We did make adjustments to the directions after assembling the first box--i.e. do not remove the plastic securing the slats as instructed in step one & we did glue the corner end caps to secure them and prevent exposure of sharp corners.

The instructions for assembly of the water gauge were incorrect. Once in, the gauge was not working, and I am stuck with fillingthe reservoir until it overflows.

Otherwise the planter is very beautiful and my herbs are very happy.

Comments about 20-Year Teak Planters:

Have 4 different vegie plants in the trough planter. The water reservoir wouldn't hold water at first due to it being ill-fitting. We had to find a way to make it a little wider so that it would fit more securely in it's holder. After using a couple of screws it works well and the plants are growing very nicely.

Setting up a Teak Trough Planter Caution
By Carol the gardnerVerified Purchaser from Reading, MA on 6/9/2009
Pros:
Attractive Design, Holding Capacity
Cons:
Flimsy, Poor Engineering Design, Poor Workmanship
Best Uses:
Outdoor Plants
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about 20-Year Teak Planters:

The holes drilled for the final assembly when delivered were drilled in the wrong place and had to be redrilled - poor workmanship.

While performing the step of tamping down the "soggy 1.5 inches of dirt" on top of the wicking platform, the platform slipped off the too narrow edge and when filling the resevoir after the planting, water came streaming out the bottom. The entire planter had to be emptied, all plants removed, and the entire procedure started all over. Now, we are hesitant to use the self-watering part of the trough because the entire bottom could slip off again.

Shopped around a lot and these planter boxes looked better than any others. However, one of the water reserviors did not quite fit right and kept falling out of the bottom. We solved the problem by putting a few bricks under the planter to hold the reservior in place.

Comments about 20-Year Teak Planters:

I put one of these square planters on each side of my front door planted up with ornamental shrubs, and I really like the way they tie my entryway together. The metal corners are a very nice touch.

Sustainable sourcing is also very important to me and I am quite pleased that the teak wood used in these planters has been sourced in a sustainable manner.

Wow, this is a great looking planter! I really like the upscale look of teak and aluminum together, and the planter itself is super sturdy and surprisingly light. I've also found that the self-watering feature holds a lot of water which is a nice added bonus. I would definitely recommend these to anyone looking for an attractive low-maintenance planter.
