Located in: Yard & Landscaping, Backyard Birding, Backyard Habitat

Boost your garden's productivity by providing a happy home for peaceful, non-stinging Mason bees. Slightly smaller than honeybees, mason bees are incredible pollinators. Each one visits as many as 1000 blooms per day — 20 times as many as a honeybee! Hang this natural bamboo house against a tree or wall where it will get morning sun and attract bees. Female bees fill the bamboo tubes with their eggs, and nectar and pollen for the young to eat.

  • Attract nature's best pollinators
  • Create a natural habitat in your yard

Comments about Mason Bee House:

I was a late starter on this....ordered my Mason Bee house in the late spring. It arrived and looks beautiful....attractive and well built. I immediately hung it on a south facing tree near my garden. It has only been a few weeks, but no sign of bees moving in. I just started too late. If I don't get any tenants this summer, I will order bees next winter and have them move in. I like the way it looks, so with or without bees this summer, I am happy with my purchase.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

This is my second Mason bee house. The first one got a lot of use last season (and I left it up since there are a few more open spots). I like to plant flowers based on birds, bees and butterflies, and since I have attracted the bees, it gives them a place to call home in my yard. Although I have not seen them go in and out, I can tell by the way they block up the holes with leaf cuttings and see the holes afterward, that I know they are using it.

Not sure yet

Comments about Mason Bee House:

I'm new to gardening this year and have noticed these smaller bees lately around my vegetable garden (some even trying to go in to the ends of the stackable trellises I bought from this site). After buying this bee house, I did more reading and realize that some of the tubes may be too wide for them so I bought some paper inserts for those in case they don't use the larger ones. Looks nice. I'll have to wait until the next season to see if they use it!

Comments about Mason Bee House:

I hung the Mason Bee House on a fairly low branch of a tree that I like to sit under - I love to watch the bees come and go! The bees really seem to appreciate their new home! Didn't realize it had to be facing the southwest - hard for me - I face open fields and wind blows from that direction! Please list that info in your description!

Comments about Mason Bee House:

I put this Mason Bee House a year ago in June 2010, which was just a little late, but 2 of the tubes got filled. I left it out all winter in the same spot, and the bees exited the house, this spring, 2011. Now there are four tubes filled and the bees are steadily working to fill more. They are definitely great little pollinators, to which my blueberries will attest.

Cons:
None
Best Uses:
Educational, Year Round
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Mason Bee House:

At first I was skeptical, but I thought if nothing else, the bee house was cool to look at! I hung it in a sheltered area in my garden and waited ... sure enough, the little bees started to investigate. Two weeks later, the bees are happily flying in and out, laying their eggs, and filling the holes with mud ... and I'm fascinated! I'm learning so much about them! Mason bees are peaceful neighbors and not aggressive at all, so there is no concern for children or pets. I love my bee houses (I bought 2), and feel great that I am not only improving pollination in my garden and learning about these incredible creatures, but also contributing to their well-being! My only suggestion would be to add some information about
the life-cycle of the mason bee, so that people do not disturb the house while the bees are hibernating during the winter.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

I hung my beehive on a wood fence when I got it in April where it would get morning sun as it said to do in the catalog. However, the instructions said to place it where it would get southwest sun. So I am confused.Nowhere to hang that way so just leaving it to get the morning sun. Too early to tell if I will have bees. Maybe by next spring I will know.

Bamboo holes are MUCH too large for mason bees to use. Plus, you can't harvest bamboo in the fall to see how your bees did. Someone is making too much money on this horrible house. People should look to other sites for similar designs.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

While it's too soon to tell if it will attract mason bees or not - it's the first week in March - this item was not disappointing to look at and feel. It's very sturdy and appears to be well made of all natural materials although I wish it had been made somewhere other than China. Now it's a matter of waiting to see if the lure of flowers is followed by mason bees deciding this would make a good place to raise the next generation.

I bought one of these and put it out spring of 2009 in my insect garden. It worked great! I had several different species of bees and wasps use it. The wrap has weathered off after two years, but the bamboo tubes are still in great shape and I just took them out of the shell and put them into another container to get more years use out of them. I will be buying another!

Comments about Mason Bee House:

We bought this as a gift for a friend. Silly us, for being a hurried Christmas shopper. We thought the hive included bees!! our suggestion would be that the fact that the bees are not included should be in the opening sentence. We assumed that they were in the hive in some sort of larva stage that would hatch when the weather warms. The recipient of our gift is still cautiously optimestic that when he hangs the hive in the spring, he will attract bees.

I gave this as a gift to an avid gardener. She was really excited when she got it - not only for the attractive design but the prospect of having her own bees in her garden helping pollinate was very exciting. She is looking forward to putting it out this Spring.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

Quality and pricing are good. Note that it is made of bamboo, so only expect a couple of seasons of use as it will be subject to weather. This was purchased to attract bees for pollinating our garden. The idea is great and we are hoping it will fulfill the need, yet it is winter and too early to rate its effectiveness. The instructions which came with it were somewhat lacking and an internet search on mason bees is recommended. Doing so will give a much better understanding of were to place, how high off the ground, near a source of mud, direction of placement for proper sun light and shading, etc. Other than that it appears to be a good value, and should fill the purpose it was meant to.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

This is an unusual, good-looking product. I was surprised at how sturdy it was when I opened the box. My only "bad" comment on this is that the wire loop and the bamboo rail the loop is through (for hanging) seem far too flimsy for this somewhat heavy item. As I haven't hung it up yet,so the verdict is out on this. However, it wouldn't be too hard for me to replace the parts myself with something sturdier. Additionally, this item is made in China. I would rather it be made in the USA (and I would be willing to pay slightly more for that).

Well made charm that makes me smile. I hope the bees like it. I would like more info about the habits of these insects, when and where is the best place to start a colony and also how to get starter bees for my colony. Is this a case of hang it and they will come? Since it is good for a couple of seasons I don't want to hang it to weather until it is a good time for the bees.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

It's cute, and a good idea. As a consumer right now I can't find a better solution for attracting bees to a residential lot that's limited in size. However, if I find something else not made in China & of better quality, then this thing is camp fire kindling. It has tiny screws & nuts with no thought towards spreading the pressure points (aka, washers), and the pressure is already breaking the brittle bamboo even before it's out of the box. Add nature, and how long do you think it will last? If I could get bees, where are they likely to go when this thing dissolves, and lands on the ground? I will ask that it be replaced, but I'm also making my own long-term replacement. My home state of Washington could lose 30% in aggriculture next year, so better solutions need to be made/found.

We just bought our third house. My daughter has four. I really believe that the bees have had a very positive effective on my various flowers. It is a plus to watch them deciding which tube to use and then work hard to plug it with mud. Our bees started to reuse the tubes before some were empty, so there was no chance to "clean" them, but the bees don't seem to mind.

Cat. Description does not make it clear that the bees will use this for winter housing and that it will play little part in this summer's bee visits. Comments about Mason Bee House:

The bee house is very attractive and well built. We had Mason Bees investigating a bamboo wind chime we had hanging outside, so decided to get them a home. [...] I hung it where the bamboo windchime was, but we haven't had any Mason Bees lately. It is very hot now (we've had almost a week of 100+ temperature), so I don't think it is the fault of the bee house. I do not know when the bees are to start laying their eggs; it is possible we missed that for this year. We will keep it hanging, though. It is nice to look at and I think eventually the bees will find it.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

I bought this a couple of years ago, and hung it on the South side of our garage, hoping to avert the Mason bees from laying their eggs under the shingles of the house. The cavities are almost completely full of nests, and I've not seen (or heard) bees going under the shingles. They have done a great job of pollinating our flowers and vegetables, as well. I'm ordering two more, since we've just planted three apple trees!

It looks great, it is too early to tell it the bees will use it but I'm sure they will. The only problem I had was finding a suitable location for it out of the wind and weather. Finally mounted it on the SE corner of the house about 4 feet above the ground out of the wind and under the eve. I will probably buy more too.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

I have just started honey bee keeping this spring. I also wanted to have a place for the mason bees to live and raise brood. When I saw this in the catalog, I got it immediately. I bought a "can of bees" from another seed company, and hung both under the eaves of my garage, out of direct sun and wind. In no time, the bees emerged from the can, and I've seen activity in the mason bee house, so I think they like it. I'll probably bring it into the garage for the winter, to protect it, and re-hang it next spring.

There must be a difference in what I call carpenter bees and mason bees. The bees I'm seeing ignore the mason bee house and continue to bore holes in the fascia board on my porch and in the 2x4 framing for my grape arbor. The bees were active for several weeks prior to my receiving the mason bee house. I'm hoping they will discover the bee house and switch their activity.

I had been hoping for something to increase bee activity for the vegetable garden, and saw this on your website. I figured for the money it couldn't hurt. Well, mine arrived last week, [...]that same day i saw 3 mason bees visiting the hyacinths. I hung it from the sassafras tree out back on 4/1/10, and today, 4/7/10 already, there are a couple of mason bees laying eggs in it. I should have a great supply of mason bees this summer. Not only will i recommend this product, I will be buying another one later in the season.

We live in the north and it's winter so we plan to hang in the spring, and I can't imagine what bee would not like to move into such a beautiful house. These are so beautiful that they could be used as decoration inside. I love the product!

Comments about Mason Bee House:

I was flipping through a magazine to get ideas for Christmas gifts when I came upon a picture of this bee house for a little over[$]. I thought it was so awesome and I knew I wanted to get it. I thought back to a conversation my dad and I had over the summer about how there weren't very many bees in the area any longer and how our yard was suffering from it- our fruit trees, blossoms, etc. weren't as big and beautiful. I was excited to find something that would give non-stinging bees an excuse to come to our yard. Now they can live here!

Comments about Mason Bee House:

The Mason Bee House is a work of art in itself, let alone a haven for the bees (who deserve the best as they do so much good). The construction is sturdy. I plan to hang it (using the hardware provided) as suggested in the accompanying leaflet, in Spring (and just hope wasps and other insects don't find it attractive to the detriment of the Mason Bees!). Again, I am pleased with this buy - I've never been disappointed with anything purchased from this website.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

We have been looking at the mason bee home for over a year and finally purchased two of them. They are well made and easy to put up. We looked into the advantages/disadvantages of mason bees as we are very concerned about environmental issues especially the loss of honey bees. Well the mason bees seems like an ideal solution since they are productive and non agressive. We have had problems with honey bees attacking our cookout guests. Next summer will be intersting to see how these bees react to their new home and to our outdoor party guests.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

This is a really great product at an unbeatable price! I became interested in Mason bees when I found that they had made homes for their larvae in the spaces behind the "L" brackets on some old shelving near the garage. I searched for info based on their habit of packing the ends of their nests with mud and found it to be the habit of Mason bees. This bee house is beautiful, well-constructed, and most importantly, it works to attract Mason bees to your garden. I've had two out for a little over a month and can already see where several of the bamboo openings have been plugged. I can't wait to see how their presence affects my garden! A great product!

I am happy to do something proactive to help bee pollinators continue to thrive. The bee house is a reasonably priced way for the average gardener to do this. Also a different kind of decoration and, certainly, a conversation starter. Good job!

WE ARE DOING A GARDEN THEME CHRISTMAS EXCHANGE, THIS WOULD BE A VERY DESIRED GIFT ALSO! BUT I'LL NOT LET MINE GO! :)

I bought one colony of Mason Bees from a local store. It fit perfectly into the Mason Bee House. The bees came out, did their pollination and went back into the Mason Bee House in another spot. They are there waiting for next Spring. Hopefully the bees will multiply and I will have even more bees next year.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

The honeybee is not native to North America, but the mason bee, a workhorse of a pollinator, is & this is the best looking nesting box I've found anywhere, and it's a great price. It looks more like a garden ornament than a home for cavity nesting bees. I've shown it to our county extension agent who has ordered several for the demonstration garden.

No assemble required and it is very sturdy (got to love that bamboo). Attractive and a really great and affordable price. But watch out because once your friends and family see it...they will want it! Let's face it, the bees need our help right now :)

Pros:
Attractive, Durable, Easy To Set Up
Best Uses:
Spring, Summer
Describe Yourself:
Budget Shopper
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Mason Bee House:

We have not set this up yet as there is still snow on the ground, but we are looking forward to doing it soon with Spring coming. With pollinating bees on the decline nearly all our natural food supply is at risk. Mason bees are excellent pollinators so this is an easy and fun way to help out the bee population, and by extension, all of our plant life.

The bee house is very solidly made and appears that it will stand up to weather and use for many years. It also is a great item to teach children about ways to improve our gardens while benefitting our environment and resources. My children are excited to put it up and have already read the literature that comes with it about how the bees use this, how they nest, and what we should look for. Thanks for a great idea and product.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

Since I have a certified Backyard Habitat, I find that including a bee house is a natural addition. We noticed last year, that certain vegetable plants were not being properly pollinated, and also noticed the scarcity of bee activity. I am hoping that this bee house will encourage the bees to come and stay in the upcoming spring season.

Shockingly well made
Best Uses:
In The Lawn, Spring, Summer
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Mason Bee House:

Shockingly well made for something made of simple natural materials. Very tight and surprisingly heavy. I can not wait to see how well it holds up to the weather. I hope that the seams don't give out with moisture, but I have a feeling that the natural swell will hold it firm. I would hate to have to cover it with epoxy as I do not know how that could affect the bees/larva in the long term.

I recently bought a home and inherited a beautiful garden with bees who come and go. I wanted to make sure they stick around so I bought them a place to live. The bees are starting to check it out so the house is starting to pay off!

The Mason Bee House is a pretty addition to the rustic look I have in my garden.

WE HAVE LOST OUR NATIVE HONEY BEES APPARENTLY. I SAW PRACTICALLY NO HONEY BEES IN MY GARDEN THIS YEAR.
SO I'M HOPING THAT MASON BEES CAN TAKE UP THE POLLENATION SLACK. IT WILL BE NEXT SPRING BEFORE I KNOW IF THE PROJECT IS SUCCESSFUL.

I JUST FINISHED PUTTING 3 COAT OF POLYUREATHANE ON THE HOUSE.

Comments about Mason Bee House:

I was running out of room for my Japanese Hornface bees. They went right to this moments after hanging it in a sheltered area. I cannot comment on durability as it is too new.
